Day 103

A gun held to your head. You see Bucky’s face as Vincent pulls the trigger...

“NOOO!” You scream as you come awake. Bucky is immediately awake and holds you.

“I’m here, Love. I’m here. You’re okay.” Bucky tells you as you hyperventilate. “Breathe, baby. I’ve got you. It’s okay.”

Your heart is beating out of control as the panic attack holds you in its grip. Your emotions are out of control. You can’t calm yourself. You can’t keep the leash on your ability. You can feel yourself spiraling out of control.

Bucky holds onto your face forcing you to look him in the eyes. “Santi, listen to my voice. Come back to me. I feel you. I feel what you're feeling and I know how scared you are right now. I’m here. Come back to me, Love. Santi, listen to my voice. Breathe. Breathe with me.”

Staring into his eyes you try to breathe with him. The terror slowly subsides and you are able to get a hold of your ability to rein everything in. Then you turn into Bucky sobbing yet again.

Day 109

A week had passed and everyday was the same. You woke in terror, spent the day just trying to keep it together while everyone treated you with kid gloves, and then had sex with Bucky until you were absolutely exhausted and could sleep. That is, until the terror woke you once again. You couldn’t keep doing this. You knew it. It wasn’t fair to the team. Most of all, it wasn’t fair to Bucky. He comforted you each morning, checked on you throughout the day, and let you use him to exhaustion each night. You couldn’t keep yourself together.

Today, Bucky found you curled on the floor of the shower. The water had long turned cold. You were shivering and sobbing. He picked you up from the floor, wrapped you in a towel, and took you to the bed.

“Santi, you’re freezing.” Bucky says as he rubs the towel up and down your arms and legs trying to restore warmth.

You came out of the haze you were in and looked at him, eyes still glassy. “I’m sorry.”

As Bucky fussed over you, you realized it was time to get help. You couldn’t do this to him anymore.

That afternoon while Bucky was at a meeting you packed all of his things that were in your room into a box. When he came back, you were sitting on the bed with the box in front of you.

“Hey Doll. What’s that?” Bucky looks at you confused.

You take a deep breath, “Your things. I need you to move back to your room.”

“Santi, I…” Bucky begins but you hold up a hand to stop him.

“You… you are haunted enough. You don’t need my nightmares and emotions, too. I can’t control it right now. I just need to be alone for a while.” You can’t look at him. You know you’ll break down if you do.

“No. I won’t leave you alone with this. I can handle it.” Bucky says earnestly.

“You shouldn’t have to!” You shout.

He grabs you, hauls you up against him, and forces you to look at him. “That’s what you do for the people you love. I love you. I want to be here for you. I will be here for you.”

“You will. Just from your room. I can’t…” Your voice breaks, “I can’t do this to you anymore.”

“I won’t leave you. I love you, Santi.” Bucky holds you steady.

You lift your hands to his face and gently kiss his lips. “I love you, too. But I’m not in my right mind right now. I need some alone time to work on this.”

“We can get help. Do this together.” Bucky says again.

“I am getting help.” You try to pull away but Bucky holds on to you. “Please let go, Bucky.” Reluctantly, Bucky lets go of you and you walk around the bed. You pick up the small bag you had packed for yourself. “I’ll be back in a few days.”

“Where are you going?” Bucky says in a panic.

“Dr. Miles set me up to get the help I need.” You walk to him and set down the bag. Raising your hands to his face, you say, “I love you. I love you more than anything.” You kiss him. “I’ll be back in a few days, okay?” You have tears in your eyes as you look at him.

“I love you, too.” He’s breathing hard as if to stop himself from sobbing. “I’ll be here when you get back.”

“You can’t forgo every mission, Bucky.” you smile sadly at him. “But try to get some rest while I’m gone. I’ve exhausted you, too.”

“At least tell me where you are going.” Bucky says quietly.

“A SHIELD facility where I can get the therapy I need. I’ve been there before after a mission went bad. It will help and I’ll be back in a few days. I have to know when to ask for help, Bucky.”

“I understand. Do you know how brave you are? How strong? How amazing?” The tenderness in his voice caresses you.

“I thought the same thing about you the day you asked for help with your nightmares.”

You share a passionate, loving kiss. As you slowly pull away, you look into his eyes. “I love you more than anything.”

Before you can change your mind, you pick up your bag and walk out the door.

His voice follows you from behind, “I love you more than anything, too, Doll.”

Day 112

“Hey Doc. “ You say as you enter the office for therapy.

“Hello, Santi. How are you feeling?” Dr. Raines asks. She was here the last time you had been in the facility and you felt comfortable with her.

“I’m doing okay.”

“How did you sleep?”

“Better.” You smile.

“Did you have the nightmare again?”

“Yeah. But I was able to rein everything in. It didn’t get out of control this time. No panic attack.”

“That’s good. That’s huge.”

You nod. “I feel like being Eve did even more damage this time and I was only her for a week. Last time was 19 months.”

“Well, this time you lost control of the situation. You were assaulted, tortured, and nearly killed.”

“And the man I love watched me take a bullet to the head.”

“That is the part that bothers you the most. You mention it everyday.”

“He’s been through so much and I put him through more.” You say. Dr. Raines just looks at you with her level gaze until you break the silence, “I know. Part of the job. Being an Avenger.” You pause for a second deep in thought. “Which we both chose.” Your eyes flicker up to Dr. Raines and a small smirk forms on your face. She never gives the answer but always seems to lead you there. “Which we both chose.” You repeat.

“Why did you become an Avenger?” Dr. Raines leads you on and you feel the pieces coming together. The peace that had shattered at your loss of control was coming back together.You had lost a battle and won a war.

Day 115

As soon as you stepped in the elevator at the tower you asked, “FRIDAY, where’s Bucky?”

“Sergeant Barnes is in the training room.” FRIDAY responds.

“Take me there.” You say.

As soon as you walk in you see Steve and Bucky sparring in the ring. You watch for a few seconds. God, you had missed him. Neither had paid any mind to your entrance. Bucky’s back was to you so you called out, “On your six!” You are grinning ear to ear.

Within seconds, Bucky had turned and vaulted over the ropes. You were hauled into his arms and nearly crushed by his hug. He pulled back to look at your face, putting his hand to your cheek. “You’re back.”

“Told ya I would be. Still love me?” You smile coyly at him.

“More than anything.” His lips crash into yours.

After a moment he pulls back when Steve clears his throat. “Welcome back, Santi.”

“Thanks, Steve. Woah!” You screech as Bucky picks you up and throws you over his shoulder. “Uh, see ya later, Steve.” You laugh as the caveman that has apparently replaced your boyfriend takes quick strides to the doors.

“Bucky, training isn’t over.” Steve says with a smirk.

“Yes, it is!” Bucky replies. He kicks the doors open and heads straight to the elevator.

“Okay, Bucky, put me down.” You laugh.

“Nope.” He slaps your rear as the elevator gets to your bedroom floor. Kicking his door closed behind him, he doesn’t release you until he throws you on his bed.

You are giggling uncontrollably at this antic. “You turned into a caveman while I was gone?”

He settles on top of you gently. “An absolute madman. Ask anyone.” He whispers. Gooseflesh raises on your skin at his words and intense gaze. “I missed you so much.” He presses his forehead to yours. “How are you?”

“Better. Much better. Except for how much I missed you.”

“How much did you miss me?”

“So very much. Enough that I don’t mind that you are covered in sweat.” You laugh but it’s cut short by his lips claiming yours. Your tongues dance. “I ran the test three times.” Dr. Miles says. “You’re still seeing Sergeant Barnes, correct?”

“Yeah. Bucky and I are together.” You say.

“And you’re sexually active?”

“Very.” You say with a raised eyebrow.

“I’m pregnant?”

“Thanks, Doc.” You smile and listen to her instructions before heading to Bucky’s room. Your nerves are becoming worse the closer you get, but you couldn’t deter yourself for anything. You knock on his door and hear him say “Come in.”

“Hey, Love.”

“Hey, Doll. Where you been?” He looks up at you from the bed. He’s sitting up against the headboard working on his tablet.

“I went to the medbay to see Dr. Miles.” You gauge his reaction.

He looks up confused and puts the tablet on his nightstand. “Are you okay?” He reaches out for you and pulls you to sit on his lap. You loop your arms around his neck.

“I felt strange lately and so I went in and... “ Your nerves are getting the better of you.

“And?” Bucky is staring into you.

“I’m pregnant. I didn’t think I could and Doc even said it was improbable. I felt strange for a few days and I… I, I’m pregnant.”

Bucky stares at you in utter shock.

Bucky looks down at your stomach and slowly brings his hand up to cover it. “A baby?”

“I don’t know. My body usually gets rid of anything it doesn’t think should be there. Either I built up a tolerance to you or your little soldiers waged a war to stay and won. Probably a combination of both.”

Bucky chuckles and makes small circles with his hand over your belly.

“I’m six weeks, so we’ve got a while to figure everything out. Are you… How do you feel about this? I know we never really talked about it.”

Bucky pulls you in for a kiss, “The love of my life is having my baby. I couldn’t be happier.”

“Really?” You look at him with tears in your eyes.

“Actually, I could be.” He gently helps you stand before going to his desk and pulling something from the drawer. He walks back to you and pulls you in for a heated kiss. “I love you. More than anything”

“I love you, too. More than anything, Bucky.”

Bucky looks into your eyes and then slides one knee to the floor. He holds up a ring box and slowly opens it. “Marry me?”

Karadoesn’t notice that something is…off…untilshe’s at the precinct, flipping through some case files when she atlast realizes:

Ihave no idea what I’m looking at.

Dozensof notes written in shorthand that should meansomething to her, but the longer she squints and stares, the lesssense they seem to make.

Shereads through the rest of the files, hoping something will jump out,look familiar at thevery least.

Shegets a sour stomach for her troubles.

“Lookinga bit green around the gills, Miss Danvers,” John says to her asshe rushes to the nearest restroom. (But where the heck isit, she should know this, she’s worked here for…for…uhhhhhh….)

“You’reone to talk,” she shoots back miserably. John looks just asconfused as she feels because honestly? That comeback doesn’t makeany sense. John Joneshas been working homicide longer than Kara’s been alive.Probably.

“…Areyou alright?” Instead of reprimanding her—which she wouldabsolutely deserve, after a remark like that—he expresses mildconcern, crossing his arms over his broad chest.

“…Idon’t know,” Kara admits, rubbing the side of her face.

“Ithink,” John says gently, “that perhaps it would be best for youto go home early today.”

Karasquints.

“Idon’t think that’s allowed, John. Er—” She winces. What is wrongwith her? Calling him by hisfirst name at work—! “I mean. Detective Jones.”

Johnraises an eyebrow, but very kindly ignores her second screw up.“Won’t be a problem,” he assures her. “Especiallygiven…recent events.”

Karanods slowly.

“…Right,yes.” She moves to push her glasses up the bridge of her nose, andends up stabbing herself in the eye. You’ve never wornglasses before in your life.“Which would be…what, exactly?”

John,at last, stares at her like she’s grown a second head. (Or, perhaps,like she’s just stabbed herself in the eye with her own finger.Either way.) “The….coma?”

“Oh!Oh, ha, yeah, the coma.” Kara chuckles. And then. “Wait. Coma?!”

Karadoes not go home, in spite of John’s (very sound) advice to do so.Instead, she spends the rest of the morning frantically Googlingbrain injuries, amnesia, and whether or not that sort of thing istypically linked to nine-month-long comas.

Afterthe fifth or sixth (terrifying) web diagnosis, Kara shoves her laptopaside and drops her head into her hands, massaging her temples as shetries to make sense of all of this.

Shecan’t remember the coma. Which, okay, is probably not something tofreak out over. The whole pointof comas is that you’re virtually dead to the world while you’re inone, right?

Andshe does remembersleeping for a really long time…at some point…? Sothat’s…something. Maybe?

And…andthat might explain why she’s been so out of sorts. If she hasn’t beenkeeping to her routine due to being down and out for nearly a year,then of course everything is going to feel vaguely weird and…off.

Karasighs. Learning that she was in a coma for nine months might actuallybe the best news she’s had all morning.

Thatthought is depressing enough to set her off on a search for coffee.

Shedoesn’t panic this time, when she can’t immediately remember wherethe communal coffee maker is. Instead, she calmly wanders down to thefirst floor to get her bearings. Surely, something will lookfamiliar, and maybe trigger some sort of memory.

Unfortunately,the only thing that’s familiar? Is John’s frowning face.

Sheknows that expression very well.

“MissDanvers, you’re still here?” he asks. She nods.

“I’mfeeling much better,” she lies, “I don’t need to go home. Really.I’m fine.”

“That’svery good to hear,” John says, “but not what I was referring to.”

Karasuppresses a groan. Great. She’s forgotten something else.“What now?” she mutters desperately.

“Youstill have some time,” John tells her. “If you hurry, you canmake your appointment.”

“Myappointment,” Kara repeats slowly. Okay, okay, she can do this.She’s a forensic scientist. (Apparently?) She can solve this mystery.“With…a health care professional. I assume.”

“Areyou asking me?”

“Pssssh,no. I absolutely knowthat I have an appointment with…someone. Obviously.”

“CatGrant.”

“Right!Cat Grant. I—I have an appointment with the Queen of all Media?”

“…Comeagain?”

“No,that's—” Kara frowns in concentration. “Not…not Queen ofall…Dr. Grant runs STAR Labs,” she says, not entirely sure whereshe’s pulled that bit of information from. “I have to go…to STARLabs.”

“Andyou’d better hurry,” John tells her, patting her on the shoulder.“Otherwise you’ll be late. Again.”

Karafully intends on taking a bus to STAR Labs. Really, she does.

Butshe misses the bus, and then she has to jog to the next stop, andthat’s…

Whenthings get a little weird.

Well,weirder, anyway.

Becauseone minute, she’s hurrying down the sidewalk, just about to breakinto a sprint, and then the next…the next the city street isblurring around her, indistinct, like looking through a rain-soakedwindow pane, except all the colors are running horizontally, asopposed to vertical.

Shegasps, and stops running. The city jumps into startling clarity, thesights and sounds seeming to appear suddenly, and out of nowhere.

There’sa crackle of energy—something like static. A car horn blares.

Karajumps, noticing that she’s in the middle of the street (somehow?!?!)and a taxi’s headed straight for her and she has to move—!

Soshe does.

Andends up in the middle of a field, forty minutes outside of town.

“Dr.Grant!”

Ittakes Kara seven tries to stop herself close enough to STAR Labs toactually enter the facility—she’s been overshooting it every timeshe takes a step, and that alone is enough to put a certain amount ofhysteria in her voice, because what?

WHAT?

Sheforces herself to walk through the halls of the building,because any time she starts to run? She travels miles in thespan of seconds and that’s not normal. In fact, it’s very muchthe opposite.

“Dr.Grant!”

Thehalls are eerily quiet—in fact, the entire facility is virtuallyempty, and at first, it’s disconcerting. But then, Kara has thebarest hint of a memory—something about the labs being…condemnedor closed down or…?

Shefollows the spiraling halls to a main office of sorts. She doesn’tknow what compels her to follow that course, but follow it she does.And when the doors slide back, she’s rewarded with a friendly face.

“Winn!”she cries, just barely stopping herself from surging forward, forfear of The Thing happening again. “I remember you!”

“Uh…thanks…?Oh, oh we’re hugging now, okay. I can do this, I can do hugs.”

“Something’swrong, Winn,” Kara says, releasing him from the hasty embrace. Winnsnorts.

“I’llsay,” he chuckles. “I was in that particle accelerator explosiontoo, you know, and you don’t see me suddenly sprouting superpowers.”

Karastiffens. Super powers.

She…yeah.She has those. Super powers.

Butnot…not like this. Not this weird, blurry…staticelectricity thing. She remembers…

Sheremembers cities seen from above, and broken staplers, and her ownblue eyes behind a pair of nondescript glasses—but blue like…likethe bright, hot blue of a flame.

“This…thisisn’t right,” Kara takes a step back and shakes her head.“This…something’s wrong. Really wrong…”

“…Youokay there, Kara?” Winn asks, concerned.

“Idon't—” Kara shakes her head again, trying to make sense of allof this.

“Maybe…maybesit down,” Winn suggests, pulling over the other desk chair. “Sitdown and wait for Dr. Danvers to check you out.”

“No,”Kara says, backing away. “No I’m going to…” Do what,exactly? She doesn’t know, but she should do something.

“You’restarting to freak me out a little bit,” Winn tells her.“Hey…Danvers!” He shouts over his shoulder. “A little help?”

AndKara’s about to go—like, really go, even risk this weirdrunning thing, but a woman with short dark hair appears from one ofthe other labs, brow knit with confusion.

“Whatis it, Wi—” she stops, catching Kara’s eye, and then Kararemembers.

“Alex,”she breathes. Her sister. Her sister on Earth-38, where she isn’tsome sort speedster from Central City, but rather, National City’sGirl of Steel.

Shecan see that Alex remembers as well, the way the features on her faceshift, and then they’re hugging and asking questions and,

“Whathappened?”

Karathinks back to the day before—at least, she hopes it was theday before—when she and Alex had made a quick, impromptu trip toEarth-One after hearing that Barry had been restored, back safe andsound from his not-brief-enough sojourn through the Speed Force.

Anuninvited guest had appeared, though.

“Mxyhappened,” Kara replies darkly, gritting her teeth. “While wewere all having coffee.”

“Theimp guy?” Alex asks. “The one who was going to marry you?”

“Thevery same.”

BothKara and Alex whirl. Sitting in Winn’s chair, grinning wickedly, isthe Fifth Dimension Imp in the Fifth Dimensional flesh.

“Youtwo are very good,” he says, leaning back in the chair. Karascowls.

“Whatdid you do?” she asks.

“WhatI do best!” he exclaims, like it’s the most obvious thing in themultiverse. “Having a little fun, causing a little chaos.” Hebeams. “You were much faster this time around, beat yourrecord by ten whole minutes! The other team isn’t nearly asgood as you, but then, none of them have that unshakable sisterlybond going for them.”

Somethingcold coils in the pit of Kara’s gut.

“Faster…thistime around?”

“Ithink, for this next round, I’m going to have to split you two up,”Mxy declares, standing from his seat. Alex and Kara reflexivelytense, and Kara places herself between the imp and her sister (thoughof course, Alex tries to do the same.)

“Youcan try,” Kara snarls, and she’s prepared to use Barry’s speedto take this guy down.

Butthat would require knowing how to use Barry’s speed, which isdifferent from her own. She charges forward, but overshoots again,and instead of barreling into Mxy, she clips the desk and topplesforward, sending papers flying.

Mxylaughs.

“Hilarious,”he says, pocketing a smart phone that’s appeared out of thin air.“Definitely going on my facebook page. Do you all still usefacebook, in this dimensi—urk!”

Alexhas him in a choke hold.

“Kara,do the lightning thing!” she yells.

“Idon't—what?” Kara struggles to her feet.

“Barrycan throw lightning, right? Do that!”

“Idon’t know how!”

“Alright,”Mxy growls, and snaps his fingers, vanishing from both sight andAlex’s grip. Alex blinks, and looks around.

“What—”

“Enough,”Mxy says, appearing once more. He snaps his fingers, and beforeKara can even react, Alex is gone.

“No!”she shouts, lunging for the imp. This time, she actually hits hertarget, but just as with Alex, his vanishes, and hits another bank ofmonitors.

“Goodeffort,” Mxy says tauntingly, “but even the fastest girl aliveisn’t fast enough to catch me.”

Karaforces herself to her feet with a pained grunt and is about to wipethat smug grin off his face, but Mxy raises his hand…

Andthe world goes dark as the singular sound of a snap echoes in herears.

Last week, I had my husband's car parked up at work and I was notified that our car was broken into. The passenger side window was smashed and the thief took our GPS unit. BLACKETT: INFANT MIGHT HAVE BEEN TOO YOUNG FOR DAY CARE - Minister of Social Care Steve Blackett is suggesting that a baby who died mysteriously last week at a day care centre might have been too young to be accepted at such a facility. However, Blackett told Barbados TODAY he would first familiarize himself with the stipulation regarding the age at which a child is allowed to enter such facilities before arriving at a final conclusion. He said Government would take a closer look at the requirements for the admission of children to day care facilities here, with a view to ensuring that proper protocols were followed, in light of the death of the one-month-old boy who spent at least six hours at the Divine Day Nursery and Pre-School in St Stephen’s Hill, Black Rock, St Michael before his parents were summoned last Thursday. The child, Kaiden DaCosta Greenidge, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after being rushed there by his parents, Silverson Greenidge and Petra Rouse. The caregiver had told the father his son “didn’t look right” and needed to see a doctor. However, what has Blackett bewildered is the age at which the child was accepted into the nursery. He said it was drawn to his attention that a one month old child should not be allowed into a day nursery because the infant would not have had its first vaccination. A concerned Blackett gave the assurance that he would get to the bottom of this troubling issue. Senior Medical Officer of Health Dr Anton Best told Barbados TODAY that a baby receives the first inoculation – for diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus – at two months old, the second – for polio – at four months, and the third at six months old for haemophilus. He said the vaccines for measles, mumps, and rubella and varicella are administered when the child reaches one year old. Meanwhile, the baby’s father this afternoon said the autopsy had not yet been conducted on his son’s body to determine the cause of death. However, he said he expected that it would be done later this week. Last week, Child Care Board Director Joan Crawford had confirmed to Barbados TODAY that some of her officers had visited the nursery soon after the boy’s death to hear first-hand from the staff what had occurred. But with the matter now under police investigation, Crawford was tight-lipped on the visit. She however disclosed that the facility would be allowed to remain open for business “until we hear from the police. (BT)

YOU’RE FIRED! - The troubled state-run Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) could be thrown into further chaos, with the entire board of directors having been asked to resign. Official sources told Barbados TODAY that more than a week ago Minister of the Environment and Drainage Dr Denis Lowe had demanded the resignation of the entire board, chaired by Margot Harvey. Neither Lowe nor Harvey would comment on the development, with the chairman referring Barbados TODAY to the minister, who in turn simply refused to discuss the matter. However, SSA sources said Lowe was apparently unhappy with the performance of the board. The official sources also suggested that Lowe had not taken the matter to Cabinet, therefore, the board has stayed put, at least for the time being. One source told Barbados TODAY the SSA was in disarray, and Lowe’s demand was not expected to improve the situation. This development comes as the authority searches for a manager to replace acting head Roslyn Knight, while mounting financial problems have led to the near collapse of a controversial deal reached with private haulers last October to improve the island’s waste collection. With the pile up of garbage reaching tipping point, and the SSA unable to put sufficient trucks on the road, Government had reached a deal with five private truckers to clear the garbage. The arrangement, which was for six months in the first instance, has since been extended. However, at least one of the five private waste haulers has already pulled out of the arrangement and two of the four remaining private contractors are likely to follow suit. (BT)

LEGAL BIND - President of the Bar Association Liesel Weekes is not willing to be drawn into the raging public controversy over the legal qualifications of Opposition Leader Mia Mottley. However, in light of recent comments made by the Barbados Labour Party’s St James North representative Edmund Hinkson, Weekes is making it clear that once a lawyer has completed ten years of practise here in Barbados, this was enough to qualify him or her to be appointed a High Court judge. It was in response to a motion filed by the ruling Democratic Labour Party at its 62nd annual conference earlier this month, mandating DLP General Secretary George Pilgrim to draft correspondence to Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite asking him to clear the air on the issue of the Opposition Leader’s legal certification, that Hinkson, who is a member of the Bar Association, argued that there was no real breach by Mottley to speak of. In fact, the Opposition member of Parliament suggested at the time that there was at least one sitting judge who was in the same boat as Mottley in terms of not having a legal certificate. And without naming the judge, Hinkson pointed out that he was still sitting on the local bench. (BT)

BLACK OUT - Barbados was thrown into the dark today by an island wide power outage which the Barbados Light & Power (BL&P) said was the result of the “storm conditions which the country was experiencing” with the passage of Hurricane Maria. BL&P crews were forced into action in an effort to restore electricity as soon as possibly after the black out. It was not immediately clear what went wrong. However, Communications Adviser Nicole Scantlebury told Barbados TODAY that by 5:45 p.m. electricity had systematically been restored to essential services like the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Grantley Adams International Airport. Additionally, crews had successfully restored power to Bay Street, Spring Garden and its environs, Providence and St Martins and sections of St George. By 8:40 p.m. power had been restored to about 75 per cent of the island, the BL&P spokesperson said. It was an unusual start to the work week, as Barbados was affected by Hurricane Maria, which passed on the outskirts of the island. Although the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) announced that it would be business as usual, the island’s capital Bridgetown was mostly quiet, with just a few shoppers, mostly visitors, making their way through Broad Street and Swan Street, where only a handful of businesses had opened their doors. On Swan Street, one business owner who asked not to be identified said he opted to open his establishment “just in case there were people who needed to get some things for the storm and during the week”. The roadside vendors, who usually add to the overall Swan Street experience, were noticeably absent. On Broad Street, retail giant Cave Shepherd opened its doors to just a few customers who were perusing the store. Communications Manager Mark Anthony said the decision was taken to open the store from 10 a.m. to give staff time to find their way to work. (BT)

BEWARE FAKE MESSAGES - The Department of Emergency Management (DEM) is warning Barbadians about the dangers of causing unnecessary panic by spreading false information on social media during periods of emergency. Acting Deputy Director Captain Robert Harewood made specific reference to messages that had been circulating last night, which alleged that the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) was shutting down its pumping stations due to the imminent passage of Hurricane Maria. In a release issued through the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS) this evening, Harewood urged persons to be mindful of the consequences of these actions. The DEM official also advised the public to check credible sources wherever possible, such as the social media sites of the respective agencies or the BGIS, especially during times of national emergencies, before sharing such information on social media. Earlier today, the National Emergency Operations Centre based at the DEM’s Warrens offices reported that it had received 19 reports of flooding and power outages across the island which were dealt with by the Barbados Light & Power, the Drainage Division and the BWA. HURRICANE MARIA POUNDS DOMINICA - Dominica is being battered by Hurricane Maria, a Category 5 hurricane. Just under an hour ago, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit reported that his house was affected by the high winds. “My roof is gone. I am at the complete mercy of the hurricane. House is flooding,” he said. Moments later, however, he reported that he had been rescued. There are also reports that the roof of Dominica’s main hospital has been blown off. (BT)

'WE HAVE LOST ALL': DOMINICA LASHED BY MONSTER HURRICANE MARIA - “We have lost all what money can buy and replace.” These were the words of Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit in describing the “widespread devastation” which Hurricane Maria inflicted when it passed directly over his island Monday night and Tuesday morning. Maria is the first Category Five hurricane to ever hit Dominica, which suffered significant damage and many deaths when Tropical Storm Erika passed two years ago. In 1979, Hurricane David hit the island as a Category Four storm, killing 56 people and leaving three quarters of the population homeless. (DN)

DOMINICA DEVASTATED - The nature isle has been battered by Mother Nature again. A little over two years to the day after being pummeled by Tropical Storm Erika, the island of Dominica was last night reeling from the effects of Hurricane Maria. The Category 5 storm slammed into Dominica in the late evening Monday, and Prime Minister Roosevelt Skeritt couldn’t escape its wrath, as strong winds blew off the roof of his official residence in the capital of Roseau. A despondent Skeritt reached out to his regional neighbours for help late last night, even as the eye of the hurricane was directly over Dominica. “Please let the world know Dominica has been devastated,” the Prime Minister told the Nation Online by mobile-phone link up around 11.30 p.m. Monday. “We do not know how many are dead, if any. We shall know in the morning. The hurricane is still on. We were brutalised by the hurricane tonight.” Skeritt said he had to be rescued from his official residence by police officers after the roof to the house became an unidentified flying object, having succumbed to 160 mile per hour hurricane force winds. “I am now in the flooded basement, but I am safe,” the Prime Minister confirmed. “My roof is gone. I am at the complete mercy of the hurricane. House is flooding,” he added. Maria had been a Category 4 system most of Monday, but generated significant strength late into the evening, as it bore down on Dominica, and the French Islands, Martinique and Guadeloupe. Just before midnight a number of islands were under Hurricane Warning in the face of Maria’s wrath, inclusive of Guadeloupe, St Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands. Ham radio operators were also reporting last night that Maria had destroyed numerous houses in Dominica. The damage to Dominica is especially troubling, as the nature isle is only just recovering from Tropical Storm Erika, which drenched the island with over ten inches of rain on August 27, 2015, killing 30 people and causing over EC$100 million in damage. As Hurricane Maria made her effects felt yesterday for the earlier part of the day, social media and newsrooms were inundated with questions and calls as to whether schools would be open, if there would be business as usual, and if an all-clear was needed following the storm watch and flood warnings. But despite schools closing and reports of flooding due to the inclement weather, the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) said there was no need for a national shutdown, which was usually then followed by the all-clear. At the time of the first advisory from the Met Office on Saturday, Maria was a tropical storm but developed into a hurricane by Sunday evening. In an interview with the DAILY NATION, DEM deputy director Captain Robert Harewood said the protocol for a tropical storm warning was followed, including a meeting of DEM’s operations group to plan for any possible weather systems. ANOTHER BIG ONE - HURRICANE MARIA is today barrelling towards the islands of the Lesser Antilles, leaving behind a drenched Barbados and at least two people counting their losses. At press time, Maria had strengthened to Category 5 storm and was packing maximum sustained winds of 160 miles per hour. It was heading straight for a number of islands which, a couple weeks ago, had taken a beating from Hurricane Irma. The tropical storm watch for Barbados was discontinued at 2 p.m. but the flood warning was extended until 6 a.m. today. During its passage, Maria’s winds downed a number of trees, two of which crashed on houses in Gills Terrace, St Peter, and Hanson Hill, St George. Others partially blocked roads at Bishop’s Court Hill, St Michael, and Farley Hill, St Peter; damaged a communications tower in Clement Rock, Airy Hill, St Joseph, and threw rough surf at the island’s shores. Wharf Road in Bridgetown had to be closed because of high waters of the Careenage. (DN)

TREE COMES CALLING - The community of Chimborazo, St Joseph, pulled together yesterday to help one of its own after a coconut tree made an unwelcomed house call. Samuel Sobers, 66, told the DAILY NATION he was home alone between noon and 12:30 p.m. when he heard a noise. “The wind was blowing strong, so I step out to see if the almond tree was damaged. I turned to go back to the kitchen when I hear a loud crack,” he said. His first thought was the almond tree but it was a nearby coconut tree which had been uprooted, falling squarely on the roof of his house. (DN)

Flooding in St Lawrence Gap - Although minimal damage was reported today as Hurricane Maria passed on the outskirts of Barbados, the island still experienced heavy rains, gusty winds and flooding in some areas. While a number of communities were without electricity and water from the wee hours of this morning, the Department of Emergency Management announced that it would be business as usual. The Barbados Met Office had earlier predicted three to five inches of rain, as the system passed to the northeast of the island. When Barbados TODAY visited St Lawrence Gap on the south coast today, several businesses were closed due to the deteriorating conditions, some were open but were busy trying to keep water out, while visitors tried their best to remain dry. TOO HIGH A PRICE - In the wake of the devastating passage of Hurricane Irma and with at least three more powerful systems currently threatening the region, a leading Caribbean economist today warned that natural disasters are costing the region dearly. Addressing the opening of a Caribbean Leadership and Transformation Forum at the Barbados Hilton Resort, Director of Economics at the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) Dr Justin Ram reported that on average hurricanes and other environmental hazards were costing the region about two per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) annually. However, in the face of such threats, he suggested that “as small island developing states we need to be able to adapt to [natural disasters] and adapt our infrastructure as well as our livelihoods to what is happening around us”. While highlighting the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Irma on the island of Barbuda, Ram further suggested that the region needed to address frontally the whole question of “how do we build resilience to our societies and to our economies? In all, Irma was responsible for an estimated 30 deaths, with hundreds of millions of dollars in damage reported during its onslaught, which was immediately followed up by Jose. Presently, forecasters are also closely monitoring the development of Tropical Depression Lee, which is currently lurking in the Atlantic. (BT)

TWO CHARGED WITH SEPARATE DRUG OFFENCES - Two men, including a teenager, were granted bail today when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Christopher Birch on separate drug charges. Seventeen-year-old Nazz Anthony Leon of Reed Street, St Michael is accused of possession, possession with intent to supply and trafficking of 12 grammes of cannabis. With no objections from Station Sergeant Peter Barrow, Leon was released on a $1,000 surety after denying the offences. He is scheduled to return to the court on September 22. Also appearing before Birch today was 36-year-old Adrian Dacosta Spooner of Pool Land No.1, St John. He was released on $2,500 bail after pleading not guilty to possession, possession with intent to supply and trafficking of five pounds of cannabis. Spooner returns to court on November 13. (BT)

PRISONER CAUGHT HIDING CANNABIS IN TWO SALT BREADS - A 28-year-old prisoner, who was caught hiding a quantity of cannabis in two salt breads, will spend an additional 90 days at HMP Dodds. Chief Magistrate Christopher Birch imposed the sentence on Kerry Omar Gibbons today in the District ‘C’ Magistrates’ Court. The inmate, who is currently serving nine years for criminal deception, reportedly put 8.65 grammes of cannabis, valued at $43.25, in two salt breads before handing them over to another inmate, who in turn placed the items in a Mello Cream container. According to prosecutor Station Sergeant Peter Barrow, the incident occurred in the kitchen at the St Philip penal institution on September 14. “This is very disappointing. You are in a place of correction and discipline . . . and should not be in possession of any contraband or any illegal drugs,” the chief magistrate told Gibbons, while stating that prison officials would conduct their own investigations into the matter. Gibson, who said he was given the drugs by a fellow inmate to give to another prisoner, has taken “full responsibility” for the incident. “I apologize for my action and ask you to be lenient on me . . . and give me any sentence to run with my sentence,” he said. However, that request was met with a resounding “no” from Birch. While making it clear that Gibson must feel the consequences of his action, the chief magistrate sentenced him to 90 days, which are to be added on to his current prison sentence. (BT)

ROSALIE THANKS GOD, BUT CHAMPAGNE ‘TOO STRONG’ - SHE FELT GOOD and she thanked the Lord. As Hurricane Maria brushed by the island, centenarian Rosalie Carlotta Cox was toasting her long life with her family and Acting Governor General Sir Philip Greaves at her 2nd Avenue, Hoyte’s Village, St James home yesterday. “It’s too strong,” she said of her glass of champagne, prompting laughter from those present. She had earlier recited the Lord’s Prayer for her guests after being presented with a bouquet, a bottle of bubbly and a card from the Acting Governor General. Cox now lives with her grandson Elvis Thompson, who told Sir Philip she raised him from a boy and now it was his time to return the favour. Daughter Melda Hinds who, along with her brother Clem Cox was one of the centenarian’s two surviving children, said her mother had seven children and was now grandmother to eight. “I would say she is a quiet person,” Hinds said, adding her mother worked at a plantation in St Peter, and was a regular church-goer at the Pentecostal Church in French Village, St Peter, until a few years ago. She attributed her mother’s longevity to ground provisions. “To me, she wasn’t the kind of person who was always sick. She was always fairly healthy,” she added. (DN)
