this is a very embarrassing and stupid thing to have an opinion about
So a Sesame Street writer says he wrote Bert and Ernie as gay, and as reflections of himself and his partner.
Frank Oz responds, "But why that question? Does it really matter? Why the need to define people as only gay? There's much more to a human being than just straightness or gayness."
so if it’s not important if they’re straight or gay, then why does Frank gotta set the record straight by calling them definitively not gay??
Sesame Street responds, “Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics, they remain puppets and do not have a sexual orientation.”
You’re telling me Miss Piggy and Kermit don’t have sexual orientations???
Puppets express strong emotions all the time, including love. Bert and Ernie love each other. If some people read that love as romantic, why do they need to be explicitly shut down and told “no, they’re just friends” ? It’s just exhausting to me that fictional characters for children get policed like this.
This dumb bullshit with Bert and Ernie just makes me sad, because it says, “If you don’t see these two fucking, they can’t be gay! Ignore all the evidence in front of your eyes that these are characters in a loving relationship! Also, ignore the evidence in front of you when you see two same-gender people loving each other in real life, because they’re probably ~just friends.~”
