Why do alternate history authors always assume No Reformation = Middle Ages forever? No Reformation means no Counter-Reformation, i.e. decadent neoclassical popes and cardinals pouring money into arts and sciences.

I don't know, because that doesn't make sense even on its own terms. Surely No Reformation means Renaissance Forever...

Also, even without the Reformation, at some point some king is going to get into a fight with the Pope and manage to get Gallicanism or a revived Conciliarism over on the ultramontanists and make it stick. It's just the law of large numbers.

I am not a Bible expert but I've listened to enough podcasts on it that I'm pretty sure there were quite a few centuries of people writing "the Apocalypse of X" stories that featured visions of what Heaven and Hell were like. Most of them are apocrypha and not canon, but they were very much part of the existing religion and people's understanding. The idea of Hell being where people were tortured in karmically satisfying and horrible ways (while the people in Heaven looked down and watched/mocked them) was absolutely a thing that showed up pretty early. Which I think counts as "theological basis." @apocrypals

The fact that Dante created the most popular image of the afterlife with absolutely no theological basis for it will still be the funniest thing to me
