It’s worth noting that the Philippines has classified half of its 30 million hectares of land mass as forest reserve, yet just about 2 million is left as closed forests, according to data in the latest edition of the Philippine Forestry Statistics, published by the Philippines Department of Environment & Natural Resources. Closed forest is defined as forest where the trees in various storeys and the undergrowth cover a high proportion- at least 40 percent- of the ground and have a continuous dense grass layer.
