How to Build Your Own Trailer Decking in 4 Easy Steps
Trailer flooring is a legal requirement stated in the Code of Federal Regulations, and it must be durable, safe, and tight enough to prevent gas and fire from permeating. It also provides sufficient traction to the cargo and other materials loaded onto the vehicle. With these things in mind, you must pick the right material and follow the industry standard when building your trailer decking.
This guide can help you build your trailer deck in four easy steps using high-quality, reliable, and long-lasting hardwood.
Step 1: Choose the best hardwood
Apitong is an exotic hardwood species in Southeast Asia. Its colors range from light to dark red-brown, sometimes brown to dark brown, with a purple tint. Also known as Keruing, it is a high-density wood known to be harder than oak. Its minimal moisture content makes it effective at resisting fungi and termites while being durable, sustainable, and affordable. As such, it is popular in other applications, such as boardwalks, boat frameworks, truck floors, and pallets. It is the best choice for trailer decking with its shallowly interlocked or straight grain and moderately coarse texture.
Step 2: Purchase the wood
After taking measurements, buy the wood you plan to use from an established and reputable supplier of Brazilian hardwoods. That way, you know the material is sustainably sourced and comes in various sizes to suit your trailer. Reputable suppliers also offer truck decking blanks, which they can mold to meet your needs. Blanks are naturally rough-sawn with varying thicknesses and widths for trailer decking.
Step 3: Prepare the wood.
Some hardwoods are pre-treated, but you can also purchase non-treated ones you can treat yourself using appropriate substances. It’s also a good chance to inspect every material for defects or damage. Look out for double-knotted boards, which can negatively impact the structural integrity. Ensure each piece is cut to length, so they are easier to lay down to build the trailer decking.
Step 4: Lay the boards in place
Ensure sufficient allowance to allow each piece to move naturally, as wood will expand and contract under different temperatures. Keep the boards properly aligned before securing them with bolts and screws and reinstalling the angle iron for capping both ends. Use appropriate screw fasteners to secure each board in place.

Container Floors | Freight Containers
Do you want to buy new shipping containers or need old containers? Then you must look thoroughly at all aspects of them from exterior to interiors, walls, roofs, flooring, etc. Shipping container floors are typically made of compressed wood produced using tropical woods like Keruing or Apitong. Their wood gives the most noteworthy resistance against higher temperatures, moistness, and other such issues.

INTRODUCTORY POST (Post No. 1)
Philippine hardwoods are among the strongest, hardest and most beautiful timbers of the world.
Yet, except perhaps for a few old recycled pieces, premium species of Philippine hardwoods are not commercially available. By premium species we refer to the likes of Yakal, Ipil, Molave, Narra, Ebano, Tindalo, Apitong, Guijo, Mankono, Camagon, and other species of superb aesthetics and mechanical properties. Developed countries like Germany and the United States have ample sustainable supply of their timbers because they allot a good portion of their land to sustainable forests. It’s worth noting that the Philippines has classified half of its 30 million hectares of land mass as forest reserve, yet just about 2 million is left as closed forests, according to data in the latest edition of the Philippine Forestry Statistics, published by the Philippines Department of Environment & Natural Resources. Closed forest is defined as forest where the trees in various storeys and the undergrowth cover a high proportion- at least 40 percent- of the ground and have a continuous dense grass layer.
Bottom line: practically none of these prized pieces of Philippine hardwoods in stores.
This post is about an idea for the future commercial propagation of Philippine hardwoods.
We start with the following vision for this page and for a book we are about to publish about Philippine hardwoods:
~ ~ ~
Of the Philippines' 30 million hectares of land it is our dream to see before the year 2036, no denuded lands, developed cities and dwelling regions and modern road arteries, suitably provided mining and industrial regions, and developed modern farmlands nourished by 10 million hectares of sustainable forests of Philippine hardwood trees providing valuable inputs to forest-based industries, the forest cover generating enough timber so that beautiful Philippine hardwoods are commercially available, providing the key features to buildings and a trademark Filipino home. The forests contribute massively to natural carbon capture and disaster prevention and store tremendous amounts of clean water for power and general uses, and nourish the lowlands and the seas around the islands, fueling a vibrant food industry.
~ ~ ~
Early interest in the beauty of Philippine hardwoods can be seen in an article written during the American occupation of the Philippines and published in the Sacramento Union on 31 August 1913 entitled ‘Philippine Hardwoods Are Rare and Valuable’.
It says “a great deal has been heard but little known on this side of the world about the rare and beautiful hardwoods of the Philippine Islands.” The article continued “many persons have called out of mingled interest and curiosity, and have critically examined this furniture in admiration that could not be suppressed. It occurred to the insular bureau, which has charge of the affairs of civil government in the Philippines and Porto Rico, as well as of the affairs of the customs receivership of Santo Domingo, that it would be a good idea to have in Washington, for the inspection of visitors and others interested in our far away islands, an exhibit of one of their valuable resources.”
Another excerpt, this one from a publishing called "Report of the Philippine Commission to the President", Vol. III, U.S. Government Printing Office 1901, cites the more important species of Philippine hardwoods and their uses at the time. We will feature some of these woods in the upcoming book entitled Philippine Hardwoods.
