The Klezmatics - Apikorsim
Tumblr media
I wrote down some words about this album, here they are.
15 songs, all in Yiddish this time after 2 albums in which they lent their extraordinary brand of Jewish folk to unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics. Here they are as vibrant and exciting as they've always been, deftly mixing party tracks with haunting ballads and throwing in the odd dancey instrumental here and there. If you're new to Klezmer music then the Klezmatics are a great place to start, their music is dense without ever becoming overwhelming, modern without ever losing site of their roots. Lorin Sklamberg's voice is so accommodating you don't really need to understand what he's saying to appreciate it. Though if you take time to track down translations (i.e buy the physical album) you'll find them to be as sharp and clever as their music would suggest. Sure, It may not be up there with Jews With Horns or Wonder Wheel but it's still a wonderful, joyous trip of an album. I absolutely adore it.

I heard years ago from Rav Avigdor Miller that the reason the Torah used anthropomorphisms (hand of Hashem, eyes of Hashem) even though someone who understands them as they are written is an Apikores, is because the Torah wanted to give us a gift of Daas - sensory awareness of Hashem. On one hand, we are required to know that Hashem has nothing at all in common with us; that we cannot come close to conceptualizing Him; that even His existence is not existence as we know it, but on the other hand, we are required to have a sensory awareness of the reality of His presence. That's a hard balance to attain. To facilitate this, the Torah speaks about Hashem in ways that allow us to "feel" Hashem's presence, and at the same time intellectually understand that the feelings are not representative of what Hashem really is.
In other words, we are supposed to use these phrases not to understand what Hashem is, but to knock it into our heads that Hashem is.
This was the gift of the Maaseh Merkava[vision of the chariot], where Hashem appeared as if He were a physical being. of course, it was just an apparition, and not Hashem, but the sensory input of it strengthened to no end the awareness of Hashem's presence.
And so, as a miniature "maaseh merkava" exercise, he said, it is altogether proper to imagine yourself during davening[praying] in front of a merciful / awesome / humbling / majestic King / Judge / Father, just to help acquire the feelings that we are supposed to anyway have when standing in front of Hashem, but are so hard to feel because Hashem is so dissimilar to anything we can experience or imagine.
Of course, at the same time, understanding that your visual aid has no relation to reality in the slightest. It is there only to trigger your feelings.
And also of course, if you do not need this exercise to evoke the proper feelings that accompany davening in front of Hashem, the Siba Rishona-Muchrach HaMetzius, then it's not necessary altogether.

Which is more on point for Mr. Bennett: an apikores actively disengaging from all of his family's religious everything while Mrs. Bennett frantically tries to find all five girls shidduchim anyway and make excuses for why he's missed yet another minyan, or someone who's so deep into his studies that he forgets he's also a father?
I’ve never been that interested in a Jewish version of pride and prejudice and then I thought about mr collins being a graduate of yeshiva university, possibly even a reject from the maccabeats

how I imagine Yosef Mizrachi talks
someone: your kiruv is bad, your morals are bad, and you should feel bad
YM: What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little kofer? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class at Ohr Somayach, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Reform temples, and I have over 500,000 confirmed Jews mekarev'd. I am compared to Moshe Rabbeinu and I’m the top rav in the entire olam hazeh. You are nothing to me but just another apikores. I will mekarev you the fuck in with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of frum IT guys across Israel and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the mabul, rasha. The mabul that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your "progressive Jewish practice". You’re fucking frum, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can mekarev you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my mouth. Not only am I extensively trained in divrei chizuk, but I have access to the entire Aramaic version of the Talmud Bavli and I will use it to its full extent to prove that people like you it's a mitzvah to hate, you little rasha. If only you could have known what holy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, gradeh you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn kofer. I will shit bad kiruv all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking frum, kiddo.

For those who don’t already know: Natasha Lyonne is ex-Orthodox Jewish! She took honours Talmud classes and was expelled for selling pot at school and I love her, and though it is probably projection, I feel like I so deeply recognise the energy she brings to her performances from my own “off-the-derech” experiences. There is something distinctly and wonderfully apikores about her.
