Punishment (The Great blurb)
Pairing: Grigor Dymov x fem! Reader
Word Count: 1K
Warnings: swearing, brief mentions of sex and nudity, almost death, drowning (but saved)
From Anon request: Hi, first of all I'd like to say I absolutely love your writing. Second of all could I request a fic for Grigor Dymov? I had this idea based on the scene where Catherine is in the chest and Peter throws it into the lake. Instead of Catherine it could be the reader and Grigor is really concerned and orders for the chest to be removed from the water and is then all cute and caring for the reader. I know its pretty lame...I've got kinda bad writers block at the moment.
A/N: Sure thing! Good luck with the writers block- and thank you! This was lovely to write!
You woke up into darkness. No morning light. No familiar bedroom. Only darkness.
How on earth did you get here? What were you doing here?
It was rocky. Panic shook you awake as you blinked your eyes open. Your fingers began to reach out to feel your surroundings. Everything felt wooden. It was a rectangular shape. There was a bit of grey light peeking in the form of a thin line just over your head.
How did I get there? Did someone do something to me?
You were in a chest large enough to stuff you inside, you figured. Feeling your own body, you were still in your night clothes. Blinking and pinching yourself, you felt the pain. There was even the cold air from outside seeping in. This wasn’t a dream.
It shook and you felt it being lifted with the huffs of masculine breaths and voices just outside. You took your fists and beat against the wood.
“Who’s there! Is someone there?” Please let me out!” you cried.
There was no response.
“I’m inside! There’s someone in the chest!” you yelled.
When you pushed up against the lid, you realized it was locked tight. From the inside there was no way of unlocking it from your frantic inspection and what little you could see. Then you heard the rush and bauble of water right outside. And it came pouring through the cracks. First as a puddle. Then more. And more. And more.
Girgor stood outside next to Peter watching the servants take the chest into the river. It was a chilly morning. The sky was overcast, and the trees were either bare or brown. His fur hat itched on top of his head. Guards in dark coats and beards stood all around them watching apathetically. Glancing at Peter, the Emperor’s eyes were dark, and his hands folded. His gaze downward. His lips curled into a smirk. But Grigor felt his stomach turn sour at the sight of the servants lowering the chest into the lake. He heard your voice clearly and clenched his fists.
Already it was halfway down. Y/N’s pleas turned into frightened screams.
“HELP! HELP! SOMEONE HELP PLEASE!”
Her cries rung haunted into his eardrums as if she were being set alight with fire rather than being buried in water.
“SOMEONE! ANYONE!” followed by a scream that made him feel cold despite his clothes.
His hands fidgeting, he sucked in a quick breath through his nose. He turned to Peter.
“Don’t you think she’s learned her lesson?” he suggested.
Peter snarled.
“The bitch fucking called me a piece of shit unfit to rule. She needs to be taught a lesson. No one gets away with calling me names.”
“Well, she didn’t say a ‘piece of shit.’ If I remember the report correctly,” Grigor said.
“She still said I was a bad Emperor!”
There was another scream, the chest was getting lower.
“But…she is being punished and doesn’t know why. I don’t think anyone told her that was why this was happening…they stole her when she was just sleeping! And Peter-wouldn’t you rather be known for your mercy to those who have the little slip up?”
“I’ll be seen as weak! And insulting your sovereign ruler isn’t just a little ‘slip up!’”
“You could…tell her not do it again, she will know why she’s being punished…and you’ll be celebrated. And then she won’t do it again. Peter the Merciful. Peter the Saintly. Peter the Beloved- how does that sound to you? I don’t think Peter-who-drowns-women has the same ring to it!”
He blinked, then stared blankly at the chest.
“If you’re not feeling merciful- let her walk back to the palace in her state. Don’t give her death as quick mercy-but just rather let her suffer humiliation. She could be back in court in half-drowned with everyone knowing what was done. It will stain her life more. That would be even worse than just killing her off- don’t you think?”
There was no response. Peter’s mouth twitched slightly and his eyes looked a little brighter.
There was another scream. The chest was almost lowered completely. If nothing happened, you were doomed.
“I guess…that would be worse…” Peter said.
Running forward, Grigor motioned to the servants in a panic. The Emperor behind him didn’t stop him.
“Stop the chest-bring it up- now! Bring it fucking up! There’s someone in there!” he barked
They glanced at Peter who nodded coldly.
They brought the chest back up out of the lake. The water dripping down created mud beneath their shoes. You could be heard grasping for breath inside.
“Open it,” Grigor ordered.
They pulled open the lock and out dumped leftover water and you.
You coughed out what water you swallowed by accident. Your hair was dripping from your head and your fingers were wrinkled. Although you had landed on your hands and knees, you nearly teared up at the sight or earth and grass. You took in desperate gulps of air, inhaling life until it stung your insides.
You looked up and saw the Emperor, Grigor, and some guards. Looking down, you put your arms over yourself. Your nightgown was drenched, and all these men might be able to have a look of your body now outlined through the soaked, white dress made sheer. Shivering already, the water did nothing to protect you from the icy air.
“Mademoiselle Y/N, do you acknowledge you were wrong?” Emperor Peter scolded.
“About what?” you asked.
“Told you,” Grigor muttered.
“My spies reported to me what you said last night. Are you sorry? Do you take back your words and say I am fit to rule Russia?” Peter asked.
You blinked open, suddenly recalling. You thought no one else could hear it. It was at the crowded party last night and it was to a friend you had in court. Or thought you had.
Grigor walked forward. At first you shifted your weight back, your arms desperately shielding any private bits that could be visible from your soaked, white gown but he put his hands up in peace. He leaned down and took off his fur hat, placing it on your head. Then he removed his fur coat, placing it around your shoulders. It was large enough it covered you entirely.
“Th…thank you…” you sputtered to him.
“Yes, I know I’m merciful and brilliant and have a massive cock and you should be grateful…but are you sorry?” Peter demanded.
Grigor helped you stand up. His eyes at you were wide like a dog begging for scraps of meat.
The new warmth from the fur hat on your head and the protection of his coat gave you strength in your voice.
“Yes….I’m sorry. I take back my words. You are fit to rule,” you said obediently.
“Well, good. And you can walk back to the palace…we have horses waiting for us.”
The fur stayed on you on the walk back. The guards followed Peter like a murder of crows around his horse. Your feet stung from the rocks and pebbles beneath. You had no shoes or stockings. Dirt got all over and there was a slight cut near your toe. There was even a blister growing on your right foot.
Once the large, grey palace was in sight you saw that Peter’s horse and his guards had vanished. But there was one familiar figure, jogging up to you.
“Y/N…are you alright?” Grigor questioned.
“II’m…I’m just in shock,” you answered.
“Here-you’ve walked enough!”
“Wha-oh!”
Suddenly he took his arm under you and his other arm went down to your legs. Before you could respond he was carrying you, rushing to the palace and walking inside. Feeling your feet dangling from the other end, you seemed weightlessness. Grigor’s handsome profile was right over your face and your breath stopped at the sight.
He headed up the grand staircase and through a door to the hallway.
A few courtiers seeing you both gasped and murmured. Heads decorated with wigs ran up to look at you. A few servants rushed up.
“Where is her chambers- she needs help” he ordered. “Mademoiselle Y/N almost drowned-we need blankets and warm clothes and hot broth-now!”
There was a scattering of feet. You saw the brown wood and chandeliers over your head, as well as a stag’s head mounted on the wall, antlers twisting to the heavens. Grigor helped you down to a maid who helped you up and walked you to your room.
Two hours later, you sat with a dry nightgown, a thick robe, and a blanket made from a bear’s fur over your lap as you sat in your chair next to a crackling fire. You held a bowl of hot broth and sipped the last bit.
At a knock of the door, you voiced out “you can enter.”
Grigor walked in.
“I…I wanted to see how you were doing…” he commented.
You stood up, setting the bowl and blanket aside.
“I’m better…and alive thanks to you…though I still have your hat and coat.”
Gesturing to the writing desk, Grigor picked up the clothes and kept them in his arms.
“I’m so sorry this happened. Y/N, please be careful…please…” he begged.
You nodded.
“I will be” you promised, “I heard you order the chest out of the water. You saved me today. I saw how mad the Emperor was at you, but you did it anyway…for that, I owe you my life.”
“You owe me nothing, Y/N. I’m just glad you’re safe.”
Walking up to him, you took his hands. Pulling them to your lips, you kissed the knuckles.
“But…I must say it again…thank you, Grigor.”
He grinned. You felt hotter than all the blankets in the world could make you feel at the sight.
“I’ll check on you tomorrow, Mademoiselle.”

The greasy man leered at me. “Well? Don’t just stand there! Shoot her!” he snapped at the taller, blond man. His expression was unreadable, ice-cold and apathetic. After a moment the blond pointed the gun at the greasy man’s leg and shot. The man howled in pain and fell to the grimy ground. The music from the club continued to pound through the brick and concrete wall. “What the fuck! What the fuck!”
The blond looked at the screaming man. “I don’t kill little girls.” His voice was surprisingly quiet. He walked over to where I lay shivering on the ground, holstering his gun as he did. He reached out a hand to me. “I’ll take you home.” Those brilliant aqua eyes were far softer when looking at me. Hesitantly, I took his leather-gloved hand. He pulled me up with ease.
“Cassius!” the man screamed to the blond. “You’ll never work in this town again!” The blond man, Cassius, ignored him, shepherding me away. He placed a hand lightly on my upper back to guide me. Cold mist clinging to my skin as we walked out of the alleyway.
The music from the club continued thrumming around us. People in line to enter the club glanced at us nervously, probably because of the gun shot and slowly quieting screams from the man. Cassius ignored them, continuing past with a short nod to the bouncer outside. We crossed the street and approached a glossy black motorcycle. A sidecar was attached. He reached into it and pulled out a helmet. “Where do you live?”
I took the helmet handed to me. I pressed my lips into a thin line. “Nowhere.” Technically the truth; this wasn’t my home town. This wasn’t even my own dimension. The neon signs around had a mixture of English letters and East Asian characters. Nothing was readable. I wasn’t quite sure how I could understand the man in front of me. Magic? I had used it to get here without understanding how; maybe it was translating everything as well for my ears and mouth.
Cassius nodded. “Get in.” My stomach a mess of nerves. He’s a stranger. He didn’t hesitate to shoot that man. If he wants to hurt me, he will. I shouldn’t go with him. He straddled the motorcycle and put on his helmet before turning to me, waiting expectantly. What if he doesn’t ‘kill little girls’ but he does something worse… I’ve read enough stories to know how a hero gets trapped. I stopped myself; hero? What kind of hero was I? What was I fighting? Nothing, that’s what. Still, he had protected me. He was offering to take me someplace presumably safe. I could feel the cold creeping into my bones, the unpleasant griminess of the alleyway and runoff soaking into my pajamas. My palms were scrapped. My left foot was bleeding a bit. I needed to get cleaned, bandaged and warmed. “I’m not taking you anywhere bad. Just somewhere safe.” I don’t have much of a choice. I don’t even know how to go back to my own world. I put on the helmet and climbed into the sidecar.
I couldn’t keep track of the streets we zipped through. Cassius wove in and out of the lanes with an experienced grace. When we arrived at our destination and the engine was shut off, the world became silent. There were dingy streetlights casting yellow light and black shadows on the ground. He helped me out of the sidecar. When I took off the helmet I stared at the building. It was a very tall building, not quite a skyscraper but close. Panes of tinted glass crawled up the side of the building facing the neon lights of what I guessed was downtown. There were a few mopeds and beat-down cars parked around. An apartment complex. “Come on.” I pulled my eyes from the surroundings and saw my escort was already at the building entrance. I put the helmet into the side car and hurried over. “Stay close.” I nodded, shivering; the wind from the drive had chilled me to the bone in my damp state. My breath came in mist clouds.
Cassius lifted his right wrist to a small white plate by the side of the door. I noticed a slim black bracelet made of something that shone in the yellow light illuminating the landing. A cheerful beep and he pulled open the door for me. I went inside. The ground was a bit dirty, a few tiles chipped at the corners exposing dark grey concrete. There were panels on the sides of the walls, flickering a little. I looked at one to see it was a virtual board. There were virtual stickies and sheets of tacked-on paper. I pressed the screen over a sticky note and the image sprang to life, something popping out. I flinched and shielded my face. “It’s a notice board.” I looked to see Cassius watching me. “It won’t hurt you. Look.” I turned back to the board to see that, while the sticky note was now somehow popped out of the screen, it hovered harmlessly. I reached for it and my fingers went through, as if it wasn’t there.
“How…” I could feel my eyes widening.
“We don’t want to linger.” He said. He came to my side. With a small swipe of her hand towards the screen, the stick note image dissolved and reappeared harmlessly on the screen. “Let’s go.”
I followed. “How did it pop out of the screen? Why did the screen change when I touched it? How is that possible?”
Cassius lifted the wristband again to a panel which pinged. I heard mechanical movement behind what looked like elevator doors. “You’ve never seen a holotouch?” I shook my head. He frowned but made no comment.
Curiosity was getting the better of me. “What’s a holotouch?”
The door pinged again and opened to reveal an elevator. Someone came out, noticing Cassius. “Hey man, where’ve you been? Tida’s been clawing at the doors looking for ya.” The woman noticed me and smiled. “Aww, who’s this cutie? Don’t tell me you’re adopting a stray?” Cassius simply placed a protective hand on my shoulder. “Aww, don’t be like that! I don’t bite unless paid.” The woman squatted down and looked up at me. Her mascara was thick, lips a brilliant lilac. Her cheekbones seemed to glow on her deep brown skin. “What’s your name, dear?”
“Elena.”
“Ooo, a vintage name. Your parents musta missed their old country.” She tilted her head. The earrings she wore caught the yellowed light. “I’m Samila, Cassius’s neighbor. It’s very nice to meet you. If ya need anything, just givea holler. May not look like much but no one makes better cookies then me.” She winked before standing up again. I felt a bit confused; how old did she think I was? Seven? Not that I’ll say no to a good cookie… “By the by, Cas-.”
“Don’t call me that.”
“By the by. Tida was reeeeal mad when I saw her last night. You’re gonna get an ass-whoppin’ for sure this time around. Can’t ya just ping her on occasion? I’m sure she’d be grateful.”
He sighed. “I was busy.”
“Ya get unbusy for family, ya hear?” Samila patted the top of my head. “Especially when you’re decidin’ to make it grow.”
“I’m twelve.” I said suddenly.
Samila blinked for a second before laughing. “Ooo, she got a mouth! I like her. Gonna grow up to be a sassy young thing. Keep an eye on her, Cas. Boys and girls’ll flock to this one.” She frowned. “Although… it will give her a lot of heartache.” Her warm brown eyes looked at me, a bit unfocused. I could see shards and sparks of amber and gold. “Yes… a river of blood… an ocean of tears…” She looked to Cassius. “You were meant to find this little Goddess.”
“How…” I felt my blood freezing; how did she know!
“Mmm…” She pressed her knuckles to her temple. “Forget I said anythin’, darlin’. I ran low on my meds this month.” The smile was fragile. “I say silly things sometimes.”
Cassius’ expression softened a bit. “Samila, you know you’re not-.” His mouth was covered by her manicured hand, cutting him off.
“Yes. I am.” She hissed. Her eyes darted around. “Just a woman who sometimes hears voices. All I need is my medication to keep it under control. That’s all.” She removed her hand. “Anyway! Time to clock in for work. Those drinks won’t serve themselves!” Unexpectedly, she hugged me as well. “Do not trust the witch. She seeks to destroy you.” The message was whispered fervently, so fast and low I almost didn’t catch it. “Steal her knowledge with caution.” She pulled away. “You’ll be just fine with Cassius. Tida’s no slouch either; amazing cook, can get stains outta anythin’ and can throw a punch. Best big brother and sister you can find.” Samila sauntered off, exiting the building without another glance.

The Autogenous Administering on Thursday took a key footfall adjoin acceptance oil and gas conduct in a aboriginal wildlife ambush in Arctic Alaska, putting alternating proposals it said would assure the animals there but that would end decades of ecology protections.
The four accessible plans, which would actuate what genitalia of the littoral apparent of the Arctic National Wildlife Ambush could be opened to drilling, were included in a abstract ecology address able by the Bureau of Land Management.
After a 45-day accessible animadversion period, the bureau is accepted to baddest one of the alternatives and accept a final address aboriginal abutting summer. If the action survives accepted cloister challenges by ecology and attention groups, as able-bodied as efforts by the admission Democratic majority in the House of Representatives to apathetic it down, charter sales for rights to assignment for oil and gas could be captivated afore the end of 2019.
Oil aggregation analysis and development affairs would crave added studies and approvals, however, so any absolute conduct could be a decade or added away.

The abstract report, alleged an ecology appulse statement, was issued actually a year afterwards Congress accustomed legislation aperture the ambush to oil and gas development. “We accept undertaken a accurate accomplishment here,” said Joe Balash, an abettor Autogenous secretary.
Mr. Balash, who oversees the bureau, said anniversary of the four proposed alternatives had “built-in protections” for the littoral plain, accepted as the 1002 Area, breadth the brief amazon caribou assemblage goes to accord birth. Of the alternatives, two would exclude one-third of the 1.5 actor acreage of the littoral apparent from any charter sales, while the added two would accept no exclusions. In all four, some acreage would be accountable to operating restrictions.
Mr. Balash said the administering did not accept a adopted alternative. “We’re activity to adjournment and see what affectionate of acknowledgment we get,” he said.
Environmental groups accept warned that conduct could abuse wildlife in one of the best undisturbed landscapes in the United States. They say the Autogenous Administering is hasty to accomplishment the ecology appulse account because it is bent to advertise leases afore the 2020 presidential election, back a Democrat could booty the White House.
“This isn’t a accepted accomplishment to attending at how to abstain impacts,” said Adam Kolton, controlling administrator of the Alaska Wilderness League. “This is a chase adjoin a political clock, to get leases afore a new administering takes office.”

Even some House Republicans criticized the process. In a letter to the abandonment autogenous secretary, Ryan Zinke, Representative Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and six colleagues apprenticed whoever replaces him to conduct a added absolute analysis of the leasing program.
Objections accept additionally been aloft by a Native accumulation that lives south of the refuge, the Gwich’in, which has airy ties to the caribou and counts on them for abundant of their food. “This administering has actually no attention to the abuse this development will administer on my people, the appulse it will accept on wildlife and the environment, and absolutely not what it will beggarly for our climate,” said Bernadette Demientieff, controlling administrator of the Gwich’in Steering Committee.
But abounding Alaskans favor conduct in the state, and Natives who alive in the littoral plain, including Inupiat, about abutment oil development.
A separate, and beneath rigorous, ecology analysis of a angle to conduct seismic surveys in the littoral apparent to define oil and gas affluence is still not complete, Mr. Balash said. Lessening any abeyant aftereffect on arctic bears of that work, which involves abundant trucks traversing the tundra, is causing the delay, he said.
Some scientists and attention groups accept bidding apropos that the seismic assignment could account abiding accident to the arctic as able-bodied as abuse the bears, which are allotment of a citizenry that is already crumbling abundantly because of the furnishings of altitude change on sea ice.

Mr. Balash said that added than 70 scientists and specialists “across governments” had formed on the ecology appulse statement. But accepted and above advisers of the Fish and Wildlife Service, addition Autogenous agency, accept said the action of advancing the account created friction, with some cadre with the Fish and Wildlife Service, which manages the refuge, activity marginalized as the Bureau of Land Management oversaw the process.
The move to accessible the littoral apparent to oil and gas development is a centerpiece of the Trump administration’s efforts to access calm assembly of deposit fuels while at the aforementioned time accomplishing abroad with policies, abounding from the Obama administration, that assure the ambiance and advice barrier all-around warming.
The refuge, in the northeastern allotment of the accompaniment on the Beaufort Sea, was created in 1960 and broadcast in 1980 to 19 actor acres. It is a all-inclusive roadless tract, home to brief birds, the ample drifting amazon caribou assemblage and the winter dens of abundant arctic bears.
For four decades, Democrats baffled efforts to accessible the breadth to oil and gas development alike as added adjacent acreage on Alaska’s North Slope were the arena of an oil boom. But with the acclamation of President Trump, Republicans who controlled both houses of Congress saw an opening, inserting accent in the 2017 tax bill that affected the affair as a way to accession acquirement for the Treasury. That bill anesthetized on a party-line vote on Dec. 20 aftermost year.
The administering confused bound to advance the plan, captivation hearings in Alaska and Washington in May. In befitting with a 2017 Autogenous Administering charge that alleged for alike the best circuitous ecology appulse statements to be accomplished aural a year and be no best than 300 pages, the Bureau of Land Management aimed to accept the ecology appulse account completed by abutting spring.

That charge was issued by the agent autogenous secretary, David Bernhardt, a above oil lobbyist who is apparent as a applicant to alter Mr. Zinke back he departs at the end of the year.
Environmental groups and some above Autogenous Administering admiral criticized the accelerated timetable, adage it potentially gave abbreviate shrift to science and relied on beforehand studies that may be outdated, decidedly back altitude change is rapidly affecting the Arctic.

Rock and Shock 2018 in Review
A hidden gem of the Boston music scene is the annual Rock and Shock Festival, a Horror Movie Convention and Music Festival held at the DCU Center and The Palladium. This year’s lineup included a stunning selection of local openers from the Boston heavy music scene, as well as world-renowned bands from Europe and all across the States.
Locals
Openers for the show on Saturday included symphonic acts Age of Embers, Vivisepulture, Goldenhall, Seven Spires, and Virus of Ideals, as well as hard rock act Blind Revision and blackened doom band Dark Was the Night.
Omnium Gatherum
Finnish melodic death band Omnium Gatherum began the show after the last local opener, Virus of Ideals, on the Palladium Downstairs stage. The lead singer, Jukka Pelkonen, interacted constantly with the crowd, inviting fans to sing along and promoting the band’s latest effort, The Burning Cold, which was released earlier this year. In addition to playing tracks off the newest release, Omnium Gatherum revisited old fan favourites from previous albums such as The Unknowing, and Skyline, ending with the track Ego off the highly celebrated album New World Shadows. The band’s signature sound of bright, almost poppy melodic death metal received immense audience reaction, and a good deal of headbanging.
Moonspell
Next up were legendary Portuguese doomsters Moonspell, who have been active since 1992. Since their inception, the band has shifted from a folk-influenced sound to the extreme gothic metal sound they are known for today. The performance was highly visual and theatrical, with heavy use of costumes and, at one point, a plague doctor’s mask by frontman Fernando Ribeiro. The crowd was animated but relaxed, owing partially to the less upbeat vibe of the genre, and partially to the riveting theatrics onstage. The set included such favourites as Alma Mater and ended with an old fan favourite, Full Moon Madness from their 1996 album.
Sarah Longfield
On the upstairs stage, Sarah Longfield of Wisconsin played a 25 minute set. Longfield is known for her intricate tapping techniques the signature djent-y, math rock-influenced sound. Signed to Season of Mist and partnered with Strandberg Guitars, the multi-instrumentalist released a new album, Disparity, in November of this year.
Ne Obliviscaris
Hailing from Australia, Ne Obliviscaris has seen a meteoric rise in popularity in recent years. In addition to the standard melodic death metal sound common to this lineup, the bands adds interest by way of dual vocalists. Buttery clean vocals and a lead violin contrast with and beautifully highlight the harsh rasping vocals. The performance was an interplay between the incredibly charismatic violinist Tim Charles, and his stoic counterpart, frontman Marc “Xenoyr” Campbell. Halfway through the set, they performed the track Intra Venus from the latest album, Urn, which was released last year, to considerable response. The crowd, which had until now contented themselves with headbanging and moshing sent forth the first wave of crowd surfers. Enthusiasm mounted, and remained high within the audience throughout the set to the end, when the band finished strong with their most famous track, And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope.
Wintersun
Wintersun’s set proved exciting, to say the least. The five-piece Finnish power metal-influenced melodic death metal band, as in the past, tied sweeping symphonic and folky elements into their music. The highly sing-along-able nature of the music was intensified by the dramatic clean vocals supplied by frontman Jari Maenpaa, who directed the crowd as a conductor would an orchestra. The excitement came to a palpable head when the band performed the perennial fan favourite, Sons of Winter and Stars, a glorious thirteen and a half minute opus split into four distinct sections. “We are the sons of winter and stars/we come from a far beyond time/forever the fire burns in our hearts/our world shall never die,” sang the fans, almost drowning Maenpaa out entirely. The enthusiasm dropped off slightly as the band introduced some newer tracks into their set, but revived instantaneously as Wintersun ended with the popular track Time.
Dark Tranquility
Dark Tranquility of Finland, along with contemporaries In Flames and At the Gates were godfathers of the Gothenburg melodic death metal scene back in the ‘90s, and the former is undoubtedly the most popular of the three today. Frontman Mikael Stanne took the stage on Saturday night to play a set, peppered with both recent tracks off Atoma, released in 2016, and older gems, most prominently off 2007’s Fiction. The crowd surfers showed no sign of stopping, even taking extra time to shake Stanne’s hand before dismounting from the collective grip of the crowd and the bouncers. Dark Tranquility’s set, unlike the others, was accompanied by visuals projected onto a blank screen at the back of the stage, using imagery ranging from album and music video art and animations from Atoma to vintage video clips. The band finished a stellar performance with a memorable ending - their perpetual audience favourite, Misery’s Crown, with a lyric video to match. The crowd went wild.
Amorphis
Amorphis from Finland, one of the old guard of melodic death metal, rounded out the night with a spirited performance to promote their recent release Queen of Time. Starting off with the single The Bee, the band played an hour-long set including songs both new and old, most prominently featuring such favourites as Silver Bride and Death of a King from previous albums. With a career spanning over 3 decades, the band had plenty of material to choose from, and they did not disappoint. In the face of a crowd at minimum energy from a day of live music, frontman Tomi Joutsen and crew pulled out hit after hit. By the last song, even the most apathetic audience member was swept in along in the current of electric energy that Joutsen inspired in the crowd with the track Black Winter Day.
As for me? I spent the two weeks after the show replaying Amorphis’ Queen of Time daily.

Vivid, Living Colour’s Game-Changing Debut Album, Turns 30...
Everyone has those bands and artist that have reached out through a pair of stereo speakers and stabbed them through the heart. Killing off their former selves. Thereby minting a broader-minded, further-reaching rendition -- a brand new you.
And that’s my relationship to the band serving as the subject of this anniversary classic album review.
The date doesn’t really matter...
But the event proved such a momentous occasion, the details are indelibly embossed onto my psyche.
It was a Friday night, decades ago. April 21, 1989, to be exact. My 14-year-old-self, a freshman in high school, and an acquaintance, a fellow 14-year-old on the path to becoming my first definitive “best friend,” and I attended our first legit rock show.
A Life-Changing Event...
And even at the risk of sounding grossly cliched, the experience changed my life. Forever. And very much for the better.
The architects of this transformation? The gurus taking center stage at the Michigan Theater, the 1,700 seat venue nestled in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan?
Four black gents hailing from the mean streets of NYC, collectively known as... Living Colour. An outfit that, thanks to witnessing this show, became my first Stated Favorite Band.
The band was riding hit on the wave of success generated by their chart-topping debut album, Vivid, which was released on this date -- May 3, 1989 -- some 30 years ago.
Vivid would go on to reach #6 on the Billboard album chart, selling over 3 million records internationally. While the band’s bona fide hit single and best known tune, Cult of Personality, would ultimately peak at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Band’s Sound...
Tough to pin down -- a synthesis of metal, thrash, punk, hardcore, and, wait for, hair metal, underpinned by a foundation of Funk, R&B, and hip-hop roots -- was instrumental in kicking off the Funk Metal revolution. Fueled by bands like Faith No More, Primus, Ice-T’s Body Count, and Suicidal Tenancies’ alter-ego, Infectious Grooves, Living Colour was at the forefront of this burgeoning sound, a shift that was likely the first nail in hair metal’s coffin, the blow struck as the Sunset Strip set was beginning to collapse under the weight of far too many cubic tons of Aquanet hairspray.
And this revolution was launched on the back of LC’s stunning debut, Vivid.
Vivid | Track-By-Track
Cult of Personality
The lead-off track, the hit single, Cult of Personality, was borne from an impromptu jam session that resulted in the tune’s titanic riff, which hA come to be known as vintage Vernon Reid. The guitarist’s “sound,” an amalgam of Reid’s formal jazz training (he was once a member of Decoding Society, helmed by esoteric jazz-fusioner Ronald Shannon Jackson’s ) and avant garde tone worships occupies a unique space on the musical spectrum. It lands somewhere between fleet-fingered technical brilliance and Greg Ginn (guitarist of Black Flag fame) inflected baseless and un-grounded noise histrionics.
As a writer for the UK music mag, Rock Candy, once noted...
“Just when you think Reid’s noise noodling is going to collapse under its own weight, he slams it back into the riff, returning order to the aural chaos.”
And this describes Cult’s tongue-twisting riff and stunning guitar acrobatics to perfection.
Meanwhile, the song’s indictment of celebrity culture, and it’s viral infection of world-leadership circles, turning politics into another more of entertainment-based "reality" competition, is as poignant today, amid the “Trump Era,” as ever before.
I Want to Know
The follow-up track, I Want to Know trends closer to glam metal territory, while at the same time, pushing vocalist Corey Glover’s soaring R&B soaked voice to the forefront.
Middle Man
Middle Man, up third, is based on a suicide note, penned by Glover. As a younger, depressed version of himself, Glover struggles to find his place in the apathetic world surrounding him. The song also features a monstrous riff from the incomparable Reid. Along with the rhythmic talents of jazz-school drummer, Will Calhoun, whose pounding beat gives the tune an unshakable foundation.
Desperate People
Next up is the thrilling Desperate People, sneakily one of the album best (and most underrated) tracks. Now, to my ear, the tune rings of Led Zeppelin's the Ocean. And this brings forward a once prominent comparison, which had many a critic dubbing Living Colour “ the black Led Zeppelin.” Apt or not, the parallel between Reid and Page’s incessant riffing, Glover and Plant’s powerhouse vocals, and Calhoun and Bonham’s rhythmic prowess are impossible to deny, particularly on this resounding track.
Open Letter to a Landlord
At the records midway point, Open Letter to a Landlord, digs deep into the blues-inflected soul, reeking of Curtis Mayfield-toned ‘70s R&B. And yet again, the song’s sentiment, chronicling wealthy, “profit above all else” driven slumlords, is as relevant today as it was upon the album’s 1988 release.
Funny Vibe
Funny Vibe gives the band an opportunity to flex their considerable chops on speedy, funk-fueled workout.
Memories Can’t Wait
Memories Can’t Wait, a Talking Heads cover, sees Reid indulging his avant garde tastes, while paying tribute to one of New York’s most influential “experimental bands.” And in the process, the band manages to turn in a totally rockin’ redefinition that towers above the original.
Broken Hearts
The Mick Jagger produced Broken Hearts is classic blues ballad, telling the timeless tale of love lost, replete with Harmonica breakdown, blown by Jagger himself.
Glamour Boys
Glamour Boys dives back into glam drenched metal, deriding a world overrun by dreaded “posers,” to the backdrop of an infectiously funky beat.
What’s Your Favorite Colour? (Theme Song)
Reid takes his guitar genius off the leash on the mostly instrumental What’s Your Favorite Colour. The band stretches out here too, rocking hard in an undeniably funky space. Meanwhile Glover does his best James Brown, channeling the R&B kingpins 10-story swagger.
Which Way to America
On the heavy rockin’ closing, Which Way to America, the band laments our long and still divided country. Additionally, Glover steps onto hip-hop turf, issue some able rap vocals on the powerful poignant tune.
And 30 Years Later...
What’s most striking about Vivid in 2018? If it was released today, it would burst forth from your speakers as fresh, current, powerful, and poignant as it did 30 years ago.
Reid’s distinctive riffs have never been matched, let alone surpassed. The band’s sound is present tense in every sense of the phrase. And the album’s production is utterly timeless.
Vivid's most familiar element, however, are its sentiments. How much of the album’s commentary is completely relevant today? In short, 100%.
Sadly, Vivid is living proof that each step our society takes forward is followed by two steps back.
The Good News...
Vivid RAWKS harder than ever. So hard, in fact, it’s guaranteed to stretch a full-faced grin across even the most enormous mug. I’m talkin’ ear-to-ear, friends!
Thus, if you haven’t heard the record in a while, or God forbid, have never heard it, I strongly encourage you to give Vivid a spin. You’ll most definitely be glad you did!

The Creation / Eva Willis
ELAINA SOLIZ headcanon
Born from divine and holy magic, Elaina was created alongside her male counterpart (her brother, in her eyes) to help restore a balance of good and evil to the United States - starting with the most chaotic town of West Hollow, Oregon. The Gods devised a way to make her kind, brave, influential and powerful but also fit perfectly into the human world where she would live and work. But, unlike most angels, Elaina and her partner were not able to be born normally and grow to experience the world on their own. In a society where beings grow into their own through nature and nurture, it was up to the Gods to find another way to make their creations fit into the world as quickly as they could. A shortcut.
During the early 1900′s, there lived a Cuban nurse, Rosalyn Álvarez, and an American/Spanish sociologist, James Willis. James traveled to Cuba, hoping to research the native Cuban people during a boom of sugar production and international relations in the country. He stayed for the woman he fell in love with and together Rosalyn and James married and had a daughter. Eva Willis lived her early childhood in Cuba before her family immigrated to the United States to start a new life. They settled in Southern California in the 1920′s to be close to James’ family. It was here where Eva grew up to be a kind-hearted and hard-working young woman with an insatiable desire for love and adventure. From the start, Eva always had genuinely pure intentions and was able to move the hearts of even the coldest most apathetic people. She studied to become a nurse like her mother and even outside of work, Eva was the kind of woman never to shy away from meeting and helping others in anyway she could. Most significantly, Eva altered the life of a terrible demon forever without ever knowing what he was. When he left she was heartbroken, but she found it in herself to love again. She never had children of her own, but she adopted an orphan boy and raised him as her own. Her story ended when she died of illness in her 50′s surrounded by love and family. Though her influence in the world was small and quiet, her legacy would continue decades after her death.
The Gods wanted to fashion Elaina after an unknown, regular person who had the heart and spirit they wanted in their angel and who no longer existed. They took Eva’s past appearance, her values and her basic intellectual knowledge to give Elaina a head start in becoming the angel fitting into a human life that they needed. Though she was not given all the memories that made Eva who she was, Elaina was given all her medical knowledge, languages, knowledge on Cuba and the personality traits that made her the gentle, compassionate, influential and strong woman that she was when she was living.
Elaina is only aware she was fashioned to the God’s wants and needs and that they took inspiration from humanity. She is not aware of the details, nor does she believe they are particularly important at this moment in her life. While she was born to resembled Eva, Elaina was later given away to the arch angels to be trained and taught what she needed to have to go down to Earth. Living on Earth, however, she can sometimes feel the ghost of Eva when she catches on to something that triggers a sensory memory from the other woman’s past. A certain dog might remind her vaguely of Eva’s neighbor’s dog in Cuba and she might feel a pull towards certain items like vintage dresses from the 1920′s or objects and faces similar to what Eva once had in her life. Elaina is very much her own woman, but Eva is still a part of what makes her who she is.

I’ve already reviewed Business Class on American’s Boeing 787-8, flight AA26 from Tokyo Haneda to Los Angeles in the past and thought I would post an updated review since AA changed their departure schedule from past midnight, into a 7:00PM evening flight.
The business class hard product on this AA Boeing 787-8 plane is still the same front and rear facing seats that I have a love/hate relationship with. It’s a great seat for lounging and for sleeping since it turns into a flatbed. The only thing I hate about it is that it feels very claustrophobic (for me at least) when you’re not sleeping on your side. My other complaint about these seats from previous experience is that depending on which seat you choose, the seat shakes whenever the person in the adjacent seat adjusts their seat, gets in and out, or even just moves. No bueno! I did find out that the window seats in row 5, as well as the window seats in rows 6 and 7 do not have these shaking issues, so I would pick those seats going forward, if they are available.
Anyway, back to the review. We arrived at Toyo Haneda International about 4:00PM via Limousine Bus from Shinjuku Station. Check-in was a breeze and we did not have to wait long to get our boarding passes. Security and exit immigration were also empty at the time, so we were airside within a few minutes.
AA uses the Japan Airlines Lounge at Haneda, and being Oneworld Emerald (AA Executive Platinum) members we had access to the First Class Lounge. The lounge is spacious with plenty of seating, there’s a small business center, a smoking room, private stall washrooms, and showers. One feature I love about this lounge is the Dining Room. The area itself is bright, with plenty of tables and seating for guests who want to dine. It has a decent buffet spread with both hot and cold food items on offer, and even a chef that can cook you a made to order Teppanyaki style beef steak. My absolute favorite food in the lounge though, is the JAL Signature Beef Curry. There’s just really nothing else like it. Add a cold glass of JAL Skytime Citrus drink, and it makes for a great meal before the flight.
The lounge also has an area called the “Red” Suite. The space is beautifully decorated with vintage aviation art and mementos. As you enter the room, there’s a Laurent-Perrier champagne bar on the right side. There is plenty of seating in the library-esque main room. The back of the room features both a full size Foosball table, and several mini chess tables. It’s a shame that most of the guests don’t stay in this corner of the lounge, but that’s OK – more LP champagne for me, then!
The First Class lounge also features a relaxation area with several high-tech Japanese massage chairs, as well as a 10-minute back massage from a therapist. There weren’t many people in the lounge when we were there, so I was able to get an appointment with the therapist. I waited about 20 minutes, and then I came back to the treatment area for my appointment. The female therapist asked whether I wanted her to focus on my neck and shoulders, in which I agreed. She had me lie down on the treatment bench face down with clothes on. Then she put a towel on my upper back and started my treatment. It was short, but very relaxing and just what I needed before the long journey back to the States.
After the nice and relaxing massage, we went to the gate area only to find out that our flight was 3.5 hours delayed. The plane had a mechanical issue, and they were waiting on a certain part to arrive. We had a short connection at LAX, and were going to misconnect because of the delay, so I called the AA Executive Platinum desk to rebook our onward flight and they were luckily able to re-accommodate us onto another flight home. We decided to do a little duty-free shopping while we were there in the terminal waiting, but decided to just go back to the lounge to wait.
Before we knew it, it was time for boarding so we went back to the gate area. Boarding was quick, and Business Class passengers had priority boarding. We were greeted at the door by one of the LAX-based crew and were pointed to our seat.
We were in seats 6L and 7L on the starboard side of the aircraft. 6L is a rear facing business class seat, while 7L is front facing. These seats do not have the shaking issues – thank goodness!
After settling in, we found the Cole Haan amenity kit, Bose Noise Canceling Headphones, a pair of slippers, the dining menu, and a bottled water waiting for us at our seat. A few minutes later, a jaded looking male flight attendant, who was working our aisle offered us a selection of water, orange juice, or champagne from a tray for our pre-departure beverage. I chose the champagne, which tasted OK, and was served in a clear plastic cup.
After boarding completed, the Captain made his announcements and apologized for the delay. He mentioned our flight time to Los Angeles was around 9 hours and 20 minutes. We then pushed back from the gate and started 15-minute taxi to the runway, as the safety video played. During the taxi, the flight attendant came back and confirmed our pre-ordered Japanese meal. We soon got to the end of the runway, and had a rather lumbering takeoff roll and gradual descent.
The Captain turned off the seatbelt sign, about 10 minutes into the flight and the flight attendants sprung into action. They came by with the beverage cart, and took our drink orders. I ordered a coke zero, which was served with some warm nuts.
The flight attendant came back a few minutes later with the cold Japanese appetizer tray, which was delicious.
After I was done, the flight attendant cleared my table and soon returned with the main entrée, fried rice, and miso soup. The entrée was a fillet of sea bream fish, which was also very good. I was so full at this point, that I decided to skip out on dessert.
I visited the lavatory to freshen up brush my teeth before bed. Then, I returned to my seat and converted it into a flat-bed. I slept for a good 5 hours.
Upon waking up, I browsed through the entertainment selections for a bit, but decided on just watching the excellent moving map.
90 minutes before landing, the flight attendants started their pre-arrival meal service. I ordered the pork Tonkatsu, which was served with a salad, and a cake for dessert. I ordered an orange juice for my beverage. The meal, while not very nicely presented, was decent and filling.
As I finished my meal, the flight attendant came back to clear my tray. I went back to the lavatory to freshen up before the mad rush started. Soon, the Captain announced our initial descent into Los Angeles.
I went back to my seat, and the flight attendant came back and offered me a hot towel.
Our descent was rather bumpy, as the Los Angeles area had a few storms that day. Then we had a firm, but uneventful landing and taxied to the gate for a few minutes. We stopped short of the gate at the Tom Bradley International Terminal, and the Captain mentioned that we had to wait for a tug to tow us into the narrow parking area. We waited, and waited, and waited, but after about 45 minutes of waiting short of the gate the tug finally arrived and parked us into our spot.
We soon disembarked, and literally ran into the immigration hall since we were already running late. We arrived at the Global Entry (GE) Kiosks only to find out that the Global Entry system was down! I approached one of the CBP officers, mentioned that I couldn’t get the system to process me. The office asked me to fill out a form and follow him to one of the counters. It’s a good thing that GE members have priority access to be processed first. Otherwise, I would have waited in the passport control line for hours. Passport control was quick, but we waited for our luggage at baggage claim for another 40 minutes. Our bags finally arrived, and we rechecked them before exiting.
We then made the trek to Terminal 4 and eventually to the Satellite Terminal to catch our American Eagle connection. We made it to our gate with about 20 minutes to spare before our flight left.
Unfortunately, this has been the dreaded “flight from hell”. Not only was the flight delayed almost 4 hours, there were also massive delays at LAX for just about everything else. It really was delays upon delays that day. I understand certain things are beyond the airlines’ control and ultimately what’s important is we get to our destination safely, in which we did. However for most people, traveling is already taxing enough as it is, and when you add delays and long wait times, it adds more stress which can be a recipe for disaster. The flight itself was fine, the service was done typical AA fashion with seemingly apathetic flight attendants just going through the motions. The food was very good as expected, as it was catered out of Tokyo. As I mentioned, the seats were comfortable for lounging and sleeping, but some of the seats move and shake as your neighbor moves, so be careful which seat you choose. Overall, I would give this flight a 6 out of 10.
Updated: American Airlines Business Class Boeing 787-8 Tokyo Haneda to Los Angeles Review I've already reviewed Business Class on American's Boeing 787-8, flight AA26 from Tokyo Haneda to Los Angeles in the past and thought I would post an updated review since AA changed their departure schedule from past midnight, into a 7:00PM evening flight.
