Of course Ludinus parallels Laerryn and Patia, but I think what’s even more compelling is the key difference that splits them apart.

It’s the fact that they had the Ring of Brass that sets these hubris wizards apart. All of them are ambitious, prideful, too powerful for their own good. But Laerryn and Patia have the stopgap. They have loved ones, family, friends that factor into their decisions. And this changes the whole dynamic on how far they go and how much they are willing to put on the line.

Yes, the Ring of Brass enabled each other so incredibly much. But Patia falters when Cerrit calls her selfish. She tries so hard to explain to Zerxus that no they weren’t playing around with Evandrin’s life. Laerryn stopped! Laerryn fully stopped in her casting of Blight when she saw the fear and disappointment in Quay’s eyes. Over and over, the Ring of Brass at the very least put doubt into their minds about what they were doing, about the actions they took to get there.

Ludinus however, is utterly and completely alone. There’s no lover like Quay to signal fear. There’s no friend like Cerrit to call out the bullshit. He has nothing. The CA are not friends, Otohan and the Sorrowlord are means to an end. This is what makes him such a frightening villain.

Because all of these wizards had the same conviction in mind: that their goal is going to achieve the betterment of their society/world. But with Laerryn and Patia, you could reach them. You could appeal to them through the connections they had outside of their conviction. But Ludinus? He only has his conviction. He only has this one goal. And he has not wavered from it in 1000 years.

In a way the true parallel for Ludinus might be Zerxus! These two extremely and unhealthily devoted men. Because Zerxus’s flaw comes down to this unyielding belief in his conviction that he can redeem anyone. And we see where that conviction will fail. How do you appeal to a person to stop when they believe they are doing good?

It is frightening in the sense of how do you affect him. How could you even get Ludinus to see the ground beneath his feet? He seems to truly believe he’s saving the next generation. That he’s freeing them from some terrible fate. It is frightening in the way that he could stand amidst the wreckage of the world and proudly say that he did it for the good of everyone.

How do you make lawful evil terrifying? Hold them to their convictions, their code, their so called honor. And never waver. Even as Molaesmyr falls. Even as annex after annex die in Aeor. Even after colleagues are being thrown in jail. Even after the world keeps saying no, please stop. Over and over, obstacles in the way. But still, the plan, the goal, must be achieved. He has nothing else.

Loquatius had only ever known grief as a concept, something external, real, but intangible.

Until yesterday. Until Evandrin.

It had been quick, the interval between the fading and the funeral. Patia and Loquatius had been making sure to have it all set up, so neither Zerxus nor Laerryn would have to worry about any bureaucracy in this time of pain --- also because it would start getting really hairy having to explain what illness had taken Evandrin without a body to examine, luckily for them, forgery of memory and documents isn't something any of them is morally above.

What Loquatius hadn't expected was for the pain to hit him as well, a quiet creeping, soul-deep and unshakable.

All he had known were either immortal or lived long enough to feel as such, and Avalir has been safe enough that violent deaths were a distant reality even for fighters like Evandrin.

This wasn't violent, but the rupture wasn't any less painful.

Laerryn last saw him the night before --- he watched her kiss him goodnight for the last time, how her hand rested on his barely there hair ---, it happened in the morning, and by the late afternoon, the whole city had gathered to pay their respect to its First Knight.

Loquatius read a speech, a week in the making, but enunciated from memory as not to offend his loved ones. He had lost hope a week prior, he wanted to make sure due respect and honor were paid to his dear friend. Evandrin knew it too, Loquatius promised then to make sure his memory lived on, that Elias would only know of his father as a hero greater than those of myths.

A whole twenty-four hours have passed since they dispersed the funeral and memorial -- hours of arranging reports, hours of trying to calm down Zerxus, hours of arranging killing disclosing some of the archives regarding the first Knight --, and Laerryn finally returns home from the Labyrinth.

She hasn't eaten, bathed, or spoken since the morning before.

She walks into the apartment slowly and apathetic, as if the place is as foreign as how she feels.

He wants to comfort her, but he's far too attuned to her to even try.

He stands up from where he was, waiting for her, and holds out a hand. Let's get you cleaned up so you can rest, darling.

Laerryn nods and takes his hand.

He helps her through the whole process. He can see how heavily she carries her limbs as she walks to their master bathroom, so he helps her out of her boots and clothes, her jewellery, gently removed and placed on the tray on their vanity. With the proximity, he can see how her eyes look exhausted and on the verge of tears, but also at the aftermath of hours of weeping.

He places a kiss on her cheek, feeling the softest peach fuzz and the warmth under his lips, thankful to have that yet another day with her, before moving on to prep the bathtub with warm water, enriching it with bath salts and oils.

He looks back at her, barely there.

Come, darling.

The dim light in her eyes grows even weaker.

There's half a second of hesitation, of her age-old instinct to put walls of self-reliance, but she's too worn out now and has been enough hours on her own to know it was futile to ease the pain. In this moment, her pride has no chance against her need to be near him.

It's barely a whisper, but he hears it. I would.

She watches him roll up his sleeves before she even dares to move. I'll grab a stool.

And when he returns, she's still waiting for him, standing awkwardly by the tub.

He places a hand on her back. Darling. Would you like to wash your hair? Otherwise, I can put it up for you.

I haven't washed it in a while...

He just nods. Get in, I'll grab the toiletries.

Their bathtub is a classic, cast iron with a gilded exterior set to the left to leave space for their very luxurious, even in this day and age, shower space of marble wall and flooring topped with a waterfall-like showerhead.

Laerryn's body is carrying the weight of grief and exhaustion and guilt, she sits on the tub and feels herself sinking beyond the surface of the iron, like an anchor or maybe a ball and chain, always sinking but never hitting the bottom.

Loquatius situates himself behind her with the products at his feet.

And so the metaphor gets lost in her. Quay moves and the air around him becomes richer for it. He's the anchor, and the water, and the wind, and the sails.

Loquatius takes a clay cup and scoops up some water before pouring over her hair. It takes quite a few turns to get it soaked through given the density of her curls and its knots.

The hair soap, handmade and hand-carved, was made especially for her with the smell and the shape of violets, dark purple marbled with yellow. He had gifted her a box with a couple dozen, months previous, to celebrate her good spirits on her yet-to-be-revealed invention.

She had told him to send one to Evandrin for his contributions so Quay asked which were his favourite flowers which she didn't remember but promised she'd ask and he promised to order it when she did.

For the funeral, Laerryn and Zerxus had decided no flowers and Quay passed the word forward. Flowers were gifted as a manner of covering up the smell of death before magic could, but they all knew there was nothing to hide. Loquatius had the idea to request that the fighters brought their swords and rapiers and all matter of weapons, and presented them in the memory of Evandrin, to make the same promise he had made as First Knight.

He soaks the soap in the water before scrubbing generously against her scalp, parting sections to reach deeper, washing away the sweat and dust. Once the bubbles start to build up, he uses only his hands, burrowing spindly fingers into her hair, massaging her scalp and scrubbing the length of it.

She remains quiet, knees to her chest, watching the view outside the circular window. Outside, mostly the stars and the pinpricks of light coming from the city are visible.

As he leans down to pick the cup back up, he observes a line of soap trail down her neck and shoulders, the contrast against her skin is a delicate ephemeral masterpiece. She is the most beautiful woman he's ever know, he will ever know, he will take care of her.

That is if she allows him to do so; in this moment, at least, she does.

Guide Ahead is truly one of the worst written Arknights events. It has so many good themes and ideas setup, like how enculturation predisoposes us to certain prejudices to the point that we're unaware of our own bigotry, how a privileged class can come off as "peaceful and welcoming" but that's only because they are secure in their own superiority, how propaganda pits members of the oppressed class against each other rather than their oppressors, the conscious and deliberate upholding of oppressive systems because they are useful, how it can be difficult to actually come to the realization that you are apart of the oppressed class, that the unfair treatment you're receiving isn't personal, it's structural.

But it cannot fully realize any of these ideas because the narrative is so contradictory. It's contradictory to the point where I see people rewrite parts of it in their head so it can actually make any sense when they talk about it.

Like one "rewrite" I see is people acting like Andoain was receiving special privileges, because he is a Sankta, a member of the privileged race. That no one cared about capturing him and he was just walking around free. If this was true, it makes Fiammetta's feelings that she's not being taken seriously valid. And then we can assume part of the reason she's not being taken seriously is because she is a Liberi, a race that is ostensibly welcomed in Laterano, yet doesn't hold as much power as Sankta. The problem is though that this just flat out isn't true. Andoain was said to be in hiding before the events of the story. He's a wanted criminal. Preventing him from leaving the country is the top priority of the Laterano officials, even though they admit he's probably not actually planning anything violent.

The game simultaneously wants us to think about the racial relationships it brings to the table but also please don't, not too hard. The Sarkaz living in Laterano have done no wrong other than existing as a hated race. Fiammetta comits violence against them because she was raised in a culture that says the Sarkaz should not exist in this land. But for our climax, we don't get Fiammetta realizing Sarkaz are just people, and that her quest for revenge against Andoain is putting these innocent people at risk because literally all he's trying to do at the moment is safely get these "illegal" people across the border. Instead we get everyone going "yeah Fiammetta you were right sorry for not taking your feelings seriously, let's go get him." and then epic showdown against final boss Andoain. The structural themes that were introduced are discarded in favor of validating Fiammetta's personal unhealthy desire for revenge.

Yeah, sure, we get Andoain and the Pope waxing philosophical about the nature of Laterano and Sankta, and Andoain and his group do get to leave, but what about our protagonist, Fiammetta? What did she learn? How did she change? I know that unlearning culturally engrained values doesn't happen overnight, but we don't even get an inkling of change. Only thing she really got out of the story was "yeah Mostima and Lemuen really are my besties who love me." She doesn't realize "maybe pulling out a grenade launcher on a Sarkaz selling cotton candy was bad actually", she doesn't realize that maybe killing Andoain won't get rid of her guilty feelings, none of Patia's words get through to her, she doesn't realize that there's a relationship between her personal problems and the structural oppression she faces, she doesn't realize she faces structural oppression at all. She had so much potential as a character who lives "in between" classes, but in the end they discard her from those themes to give her a shonen power of friendship final showdown instead. Sucks.

Hmm, let's go delve in to some characters I truly rarely talk about.

First, Vita Limbrender, one of Naz's cubs! She actually has ridiculously good hearing, very often even as a cub she could pick out sounds from far away. One key moment this was important was when her twin brother Galvar was cubnapped by a separatist. Nastazya was close to becoming an anxious wreck until Vita picked up Galvar's crying in the distance. (Nastazya successfully saves Galvar thanks to this.)

Another cub in that warband is Patia Skullrender. She's the cub of one of Nastazya's friends Ursa Metalcrunch, Patia's sire Maxim Woundbind was also the medic who assisted Naz when she arrived to the infirmary in labour, and also after her cubs were born to help sort out starting the civilian part of her life there. Back to Patia anyway, she ends up fast friends with Vita and Galvar, and thanks to their similar ages (being born only a week apart from the twins) she got in their warband too. Once they all graduate fahrar, Patia also ends up mates with Vita. Those two are inseparable.

Let's finish with Lorranu Fangrender. A year older than the most of the warband (Allius Stormrender is older by a year), she got kicked out by the cubs of her original warband because she wouldn't let them bully the new Render warband, specifically Allius. As a result, Galvar's quick thinking managed to get her to join them. She's a natural with animals and at one point manages to pocket a devourer egg and raise it to hatching. (Nastazya has a little bit of a devourer phobia so she had one of those "oh, how... lovely." kind of expressions when she found out.) Post-fahrar, Lorranu also ends up mates with Galvar. Tiny bonus since this leaves a thing. Since Vita/Patia end up a thing, as do Galvar/Lorranu. Where does that leave Allius? Well, he's ace/aro so it's not a big deal at all for him. He's just happy his warband are happy as they are.

Anything else? patia is not from any of the “proper” campaigns of critical role (aka 1, 2, or 3 - vox machina, mighty nein, bells hells). she comes from a mini campaign, exandira unlimited: calamity. it’s a 4 episode mini campaign that takes place about a thousand years before vox machina and present day exandria, during the age of arcanum.  the story of exu calamity and patia takes place in avalir, a flying city. as the keeper of scrolls, patia is part of the upper echelon of the city; not to mention that it was her grandfather that founded the city and gave it its flight. while her linage gives her importance, she is not part of the ring of gold, or even silver. her and her friends have created the ring of brass. they’re the “boots on the ground” and are given little respect from the other rings.  the ring of brass consists of: her, a wizard laerryn coramar-seelie, a wizard loquatius seelie, a warlock/bard cerrit agrupnin, a rogue zerxus ilerez, a paladin and nydas okiro, a sorcerer/bard

spoilers for episodes 3 & 4 of exu calamity below click the exu calamity link above for more info, but basically, within the arcane engine of the city, there's the arboreal calix, a magic tree that binds a contract between the wizards of avalir and the druids of cathmoíra. with a war on the city already started by the lord of the hells, patia casts legend lore on the tree. touching the tree, it starts to grow around her arm.  when laerryn casts blight on the tree and it begins to split open, a gateway is created and asmodeus - the lord of the hells - comes through. his mere presence sends a concussive force (followed by fire) through the room, tearing patia’s arm (still in the tree) from her body as well as killing her. nearly everyone else dies as well, except zerxus and laerryn. he revives loquatius and nydas, and quay revives patia.  a fight breaks out with vespin chloras (asmodeus’ right hand) and while cerrit gets the killing blow on him, zerxus and nydas die. as the city continues to descend and while the men were dealing the vespin, patia stands by laerryn as she reworks the astral leywright to eliminate two primordials from the playing field, sending them to another plane.  given some magical ether from the tree (equivalent to a 9th level spell), patia uses it to power the leywright as her final sacrifice.  as the calamity comes, half of the ring of brass are left alive: laerryn, loquatius, and cerrit. the first two accept their fate as the city and labyrinth around them crumble. cerrit flies out with directions given to him from laerryn and he makes it out alive as avalir, cathmoíra, and the surrounding landscapes are broken apart by gods, betrayers, and mortals alike. “the brass ring endures“
