They had gotten off on the wrong foot when she first moved to Avonlea and for a time, she swore that he was nothing more than a bitter enemy; however, time heals old wounds.  Eventually, her resentment toward him thawed into an academic rivalry that bloomed into camaraderie.  Unfortunately, Gilbert’s father passed away a few weeks before their eleventh year.  Instead of moving in with some extended family he never really knew, he left Avonlea and Prince Edward Island all together, citing that he needed to figure out what he wanted outside of the confines of his home town.  He returned from his sojourn, Bash in tow, nine months later.
