In response to @sonofthesaiyans I will admit that as a Eremika shipper myself, I hated how they were treated in season 4!
You already know how I hate S4 Eren being the villain, and that Armin became such a huge wuss, and now I’ll say that I hate how Mikasa’s love for Eren became pathetic - especially in those extra pages! (I can go on about how they were very unnecessary)
I’ll say for now that EMA (you know, the MAIN trio) all were butchered in this season and deserved so much better. And that’s why I don’t talk about them that much. 😖😖

SNK 139.5: Towards the Final Pages with no Final Answers
The final pages of the updated ending are bold, but I think ultimately more evocative than the original preliminary ending.
Even after the intensely polarized reader reception that took issue with the lack of storytelling precision and clarity when it was most needed, SNK chose to end with a decisively ambiguous symbol. In literature, a symbol is something that clearly means something -- but with the most "literary" symbols, their meaning cannot be absolutely defined; any attempted answer as to what a symbol represents has no finality or certainty, and interpretation will remain ever open to debate. A symbol both invites and resists interpretation.
Naturally, the immediate response to the symbolic tree on the final page is to try answering the invitation to the question, "What does it mean?"

One prominent answer I've seen is that it symbolizes the continuation of the cycle of war and violence either because a) of the symbolic parallel to Ymir or b) on a more literal level, that it implies the actual potential revival of new era of Titans. A reasonable interpretation either way, but also, I think, an incomplete one.
The first reason for this is that "the endless cycle of war" was already clearly and powerful represented in the preceding panels:

The cycle of war was already continuing in the decades or centuries before the child arrived at the tree. A culminating image symbolizing the persistence or resurgence of an era of war as the final panel would thus arguably be redundant and unnecessary.
Furthermore, the chapter is entitled "Toward the Tree on That Hill." If the tree were simply a symbol of war, by implication the chapter could equally be called 'toward the endless cycle of war'. But such a relentlessly bleak and tonally flat ending sentiment would be firmly incongruous with the story's recurrent conviction in the equal cruelty and beauty of the world -- a conviction that I believe it has been faithful to all the way to its end.
The Long Defeat
But while on this topic of war, let's linger a moment on the "cruelty" side and the consequence of this wordless construction and subsequent destruction of a city -- the most bold and possibly controversial additional panels that are also my personal favourite additions.
One objection that has emerged against this brief sequence of Paradis' apparent destruction is that it renders the entire story to be "pointless". Eren's 80% Rumbling, Armin's diplomatic peace talks between the remnants of the Allied Nations and Paradis, and before that, the proposal of the 50-year plan and Zeke's euthanasia plan... everything, to the very beginning to the Survey Corps' dreams of some kind of freedom; was it all for nothing? All that striving, that hope, that final promise bestowed upon Armin: was it all a pointless story? Even more radically, is the story suggesting that Eren might as well have continued the Rumbling to 100% of the earth? Was Zeke's euthanasia plan the cruel but correct choice all along? What was the point of rejecting the 50-year plan if that had a greater chance of success at preventing this outcome?

I think Isayama suddenly pulling back to such a long-term view of history to the scale of decades or even centuries into the future calls for a reorientation in attitude towards exactly what kind of story we have been reading. Yes, if the metric is Paradis' survival, maybe it was indeed all "pointless". But that's also to say that, on the broadest scale, SNK is a story about futility, that it is a deliberate representation of the struggle to make one's actions historically meaningful.
In the long view of history, all the events, from Grisha running beyond the wall to see the airships and the first breaking of Wall Maria to Erwin's sacrifices, Paradis' discovery of the outside world, and finally to the Battle of Heaven and Earth, it would all merely be a handful of chapters in the history textbooks of the future. A future in which war and geopolitical conflict will continue even without Titans. That does not mean that all paths to the future are equal -- the 50-year plan would not have put an end to Titans, and Zeke's euthanasia plan distorts utilitarian ethics into just another form of oppression; there are better and worse decisions that lead to more and less degrees of suffering, but no decision can ever be the final one.
The additional panels remind us that in history, there never exists a singular "Final Solution". The reason there are readers who vehemently support Eren to have flattened 100% of the world, and the reason the Paradisians supported the oppressive, authoritarian, proto-fascist Jaegar Faction under Floch and even after the Rumbling, is that because they want to believe that a Final Solution to end conflict exists and will work. They resist the fundamental uncertainty and complexity of the situation, instead preferring a singular, unified, and coherent Answer to Paradis' struggle to survive. I'm reminded of the scholar Erich Auerbach's theorization of why fascism appealed to many people during periods of political and social crisis, change, and uncertainty. Writing in exile after fleeing Nazi Germany, he observed that:
"The temptation to entrust oneself to a sect which solved all problems with a single formula, whose power of suggestion imposed solidarity, and which ostracized everything which would not fit in and submit - this temptation was so great that, with many people, fascism hardly had to employ force when the time came for it to spread through the countries of old European culture." (from Mimesis p. 550)
This acutely describes the Jaegar Faction's rise to power and continued dominance in Paradis. But their promise of unity, of a single formula to wipe out the rest of the world either literally through the Rumbling, or to dominate them with military force, is a false one. Even if Eren had Rumbled 100% of the world instead of 80%, history would still go on. The external threat of the world may have been eliminated, but internal conflict and violence would still continue onward throughout the generations born on top of the blood of the rest of the world. Needless to say, out of all the options, Eren's 80% Rumbling is the very epitome of perpetuating the cycle of violence as it creates tens of thousands of war orphans like Eren once was, and it would justify employing violence for one's own self-interest to an extreme degree. For the generations to come that would valourize Eren as a hero, it would set a dangerous precedent for what degree of destruction is acceptable for self-defence -- nothing short of the attempt to flatten the entire world. It is no surprise that Paradis would meet a violent end when its founding one-party rule of the Jaegar Faction has their roots in such unapologetically bloody foundations.

Neither the 80% Rumbling nor the militaristic, ultra-nationalistic Jaegar faction that come to govern Paradis are glamourized as the "correct" solution to ensuring Paradis' future. (This can also put to rest any accusations of SNK's ending as "fascist" or "imperialist" propaganda, since the island's modern nation that they founded ends in war. All nations must fall eventually, but not all do in such blatant destruction). Importantly, neither is Armin's diplomatic mission naively idealized as that which permanently achieves world peace. No singular or unifying formula can work because reality is complicated. Entrusting oneself to seemingly simple Answers is simply insufficient, even if they are ideals of peaceful negotiation; that method may work given the right conditions, but the world will always eventually complicate its feasibility.
After all in the real world, there's the absurd irony that some in the West had called the First World War "The War to End all Wars". These days, WWI is merely one long chapter in our textbooks just a few pages away from the even longer chapter of the Second World War that is followed by all the rest of the conflicts that have followed since then even with the establishment of diplomatic organizations like the United Nations. In this sense, showing Paradis' eventual downfall is perhaps the only way to end such a series that is so concerned with history, from King Fritz's tribal expansion into empire, the rise and fall of Marleyan ascendency, and finally of the survival and apparent shattering of Paradis.
From its beginning to its end, SNK has poignantly evoked J.R.R. Tolkien's conception of history as The Long Defeat. In one character's words, "together through ages of the world we have fought the long defeat". That is to say, "no victory is complete, that evil rises again, and that even victory brings loss".

No heroes, only humans
Eren's desperate, fatalistic resignation to committing the Rumbling, along with the characters' rejection of all the rest of the earlier plans to ensure Paradis a future, are merely the actions of human beings to that began with the need to find not even necessarily a Final Answer, but at least an acceptable and feasible one for the time being. But the characterization of Eren's confusion, childishness, and regret in the final chapter is startlingly real in how it demonstrates how, all along, we have been dealing not with grand heroes, but simply people who have no answers at all. SNK has always been about failures - and often ironic failures; it has always been a story about painful and frequently futile struggle.
People make mistakes, they can be short-sighted, selfish, biased, immature, petty, and irrational, and I think the ending follows through with depicting the consequences of that.

Erwin's self-sacrifice before being able to reach the basement (and his regression to a childhood state in the moments before his death), Kenny's futile chasing after that universal compassion he had seen in Uri, Shadis never being acknowledged by history despite his final heroic action, and so on -- these stories of ironic, futile failures are still meaningful in their mere striving. Eren's ending and Paradis' demise despite Armin's endeavour to ensure them a peaceful future are entirely consistent with this.
SNK certainly follows the shounen trope in which young individuals are bestowed great power and correspondingly great responsibility, and must then reconcile the burden of possessing that greatness on which the fate of the world depends. Yet it is equally defined by its representation of the state that us normal human beings confront everyday: the struggle against the apparent powerlessness to enact any meaningful or lasting change at all. Simultaneously, this helpless state does not exempt us from the responsibility to act in whatever small capacity we are able to resist oppression, ideological extremism, and the perpetuation of violence.
Towards That Symbol
That was a rather long but vital digression about the additional "construction and destruction" pages. To return to the issue of the symbolism in the final panel, here I will turn from seemingly affirming the tree as symbolizing the cycle of violence, towards what I think is the greater complexity of what the tree might "actually" symbolize.
As I've said above, I don't believe that the final chapter title is synonymous with 'toward the endless cycle of war'. In tone, theme, and characterization, SNK has always been defined by the tension between cruelty and beauty, the will to violence and the underlying desire for peace, and the rest of the contradictory impulses that all simultaneously coexist. The end of SNK as a whole commits to a similar lack of closure, ambiguity, and interpretive openness.
So far I have rambled on about only a view of the perpetual "cruelty" of history. Where, then, is the "beauty"?

In short, the "tree = cycle of violence" interpretation is obviously based on how that this tree recalls the original tree in which the spine creature, as the source of the power of the Titans, resided. But it's worth first considering, what exactly is this creature? We seem to get our answer in the chapter that most precisely crystallizes the dual "cruelty and beauty" of the world:

The spine creature might be said to be life itself. Or more specifically, the will of life to perpetuate itself, for no reason at all but for the fleeting moments in which we feel distinctly glad to have existed in the world.
The creature at the source of the Titans, and in extension the Titans themselves, is neither inherently a positive or negative, "good" or "evil", creative or destructive force. It's both and all of those at once. As with any power, the Titans were merely a tool that was put to use to oppressive ends.
So as I now suggest that the tree at the end is symbolically a "Tree of Life", I don't at all mean "life" in the typically celebratory or optimistic sense: rather, I mean it in the ambiguous, ambivalent, uncertain, and complex sense that has been evoked throughout the above discussion of the inevitable continuation of war.
The title "Toward The Tree on That Hill" is derived from its associations with Eren and Mikasa, but more specifically of course, from Armin's affirmation of existence. However, the tree as a symbol of existential affirmation is undercut with the revelation that, despite Armin's diplomatic mediation between the Allied Nations and Paradis, the island nation never escapes war just as no nation in the history of the earth has ever fully escaped war.

The image of Armin running toward that life-affirming tree by the end becomes twisted and complicated, as the image of the anonymous child approaching the Tree of Life evokes both awe at its beauty and grandeur, and a deep dread at the foreboding of its cyclical return to Ymir's tree that signalled the beginning of a bloody era.
And I think that is precisely it: Life is not some idealized, beautiful vision that we always want to run toward; it is also ironic, complicated, and dreadful. It is ambivalent. Like a literary symbol, the meaning of life cannot be pinned down absolutely. The tree therefore becomes itself a symbol of uncertainty, of an open future that is cyclical both in its beauty and war.
As a final observation, it is surely no coincidence that, the small, black, birdlike silhouettes of the war planes destroying the city from the sky is replaced by the similarly small black silhouettes of birds in the final panel.

If the birds represent freedom from war, the irony is that the immediately surrounding land appears to be one completely empty of people save for the exploring child; it is a freedom attained only without people's presence. Yet at the same time, a child from some existing civilization has reached it; perhaps it is freedom that they have reached, perhaps it is something else that they see in the tree. What is it that they were looking for? What does the tree and its history represent for the child, and what does it mean for their future? Alternatively, does the child-in-the-forest imagery negatively recall the warning that the world is one huge forest of predator and prey that we need to protect children from entering?
Rather than providing answers, this tree embodies all of the potential questions, and all of the potential answers. These possibilities will unfold themselves into an uncertain future beyond the chapters of history that Eren, Armin, Mikasa, Zeke, Erwin, and all the rest of the characters were part of and left their mark on; and whatever future this child will witness or create, it will similarly be one of the struggle against futility, as the journey begins anew with each generation in every new era. Neither - or both - hopeful or despairing, the final image of this tree, just like life itself, contains those innumerable irresolvable tensions as it gestures towards all possibilities, both oppressive and free.

My heart aches to see that even after all the years that have passed, Mikasa still remembers Eren.
Ageing damages the memory.
I wonder how she remembers Eren.
Is it like a detailed narrative or a blurred vision of him?

Paradis aerial bombing probably occur couple of decades or three after Mikasa's death. (notice how much the infrastructures have changed)
Eren didn't fail on his mission.
^ from my personal standpoint.
He saved Armin and Mikasa, gave freedom to his island, and created a place where his loved ones will be able to live happy lives.
It wasn't because the rumbling failed that all of those are happening to Paradis.
War is rooted not on the titan's but on humanity's greed.
It wasn't Eren who failed but those who came after him, their greed.

War is a neverending cycle of greed and hatred, there will always be that one who's gonna come and ignite the fuse.
I'm not necessarily saying that 'that one' is Beren.
I see this panel as something that represents 'that cycle'.

I never bothered reading the end of the aot Manga. I didn't like where it went based on a few spoilers I looked at so I stuck with that comic you made and called it a series. I didn't finish the anime either (and I was excited about it..) Sure I'm delusional. A cry baby even. Can you blame me, I think you felt similar. Tell me is the actual ending worth reading? I kinda feel bad about dropping the whole thing cold turkey.
the ending is not worth reading aside from history's sake and if you want brain damage so i would just stick to watching the anime up to the end of season 3. i still think that the marley arc is really good but i don't really like mappa's adaptation of it. but seriously, the ending was made even worse with the extra pages added by isayama. it caused so much pain. save yourself

note; i was expecting the extra pages for 139 to be this. but oh well, i love them either way— aot has many stories to tell still. cant wait.
it was the least eren could do for him. after being his captain for so many years, making countless sacrifices for him, listening to him. he knew levi didn’t have a dream for himself, he knew his dream was erwin’s dream, erwin’s promise. so he could only guess what else he would like.
Levi flinched, one second he was sitting with the others on that damned ship, on their way to stop eren, but with a blink of his eye, he was sitting behind a bar. he glanced at his surroundings, trying to figure out what’s happening, he was always good at that, he needed to be. it wasn’t a bar, it seemed to be a counter of some sort, he ran his hand on the underside of the wooden counter, yet no dust came off when he brought his fingers to his own face.
the faint sound of a kettle diverted his gaze onto the stove not so far from him, he furrowed his brows, where was he? as he listened to the way the kettle boiled slowly, a familiar voice caught his attention. “hey...captain,” he had heard that voice call him captain one too many times. he didn’t even need to turn to know who it was, yet he still did. wanting to see with his own eye. eren was sitting in one of the round tables with 3 chairs, he looked younger. he looked like the same fifteen year old brat levi taught and looked after himself. his hair short, eyes burning a bright jade, no longer teal like present..present?
levi wanted to beat that brat up so much, didn’t matter if he was taller than him, or held the power of three powerful titans, he wanted to beat him to a pulp with his own knees. teach him how he has wasted his whole life protecting the boy, was war and genocide how he was going to repay him? repay their sacrifices? repay his sacrifice?
all thoughts were dusted away, sucked away into oblivion as eren spoke to him, levi looked down at his own fists, why were they clenched? why was he mad at fifteen year old eren? he was just a kid. “this is your tea shop captain, do you like it?” eren talked with a monotone voice, it felt like deja vü to levi, yet he didn’t know why. he couldn’t tell why his voice didn’t match his appearance. yet there was this nagging feeling in his brain , he shouldn’t be here.
“tea— tea shop? tsk, i don’t own a damn tea shop.” never in his life levi had doubts about anything, yet for once he spoke his words without knowing the truth behind them. eren looked down at his hands, stretching his fingers out before unstretching them again, he let out a sound, levi’s brows furrowed. was the damn brat laughing? or was he crying? he couldn’t tell what emotions eren held anymore.
“y’know captain,” eren spoke slowly as he got out of the table in the corner of the shop, making his way to the counter and sitting infront of levi, “you’re an ackerman. so obviously you won’t buy this stupid fake reality i made to try and condone my actions to you.” eren put a hand on his own forehead, tugging at his own hair, a tear drop rolled down his face, “it’s pathetic really, out of all the others, i don’t have anything planned to tell you, captain levi.” levi’s eyes widened and he seemed to be deep in thought, “it doesn’t matter if i apologize captain, it won’t bring back the lives of our soldiers who died for this, who died for me.”
levi was getting glimpses of memories back with each word that left eren’s lips, erwin’s limp body laying on that rooftop, petra’s neck pulled back against that tree, “i’ve failed you, captain levi.” hange’s hopefull eyes even as she dived into her own demise.
levi’s eye twitched, lunching towards eren over the counter, both of them falling down to the ground with what should’ve been an ear deafening noise, yet it was quite. it was quite as levi’s punches landed against the boy’s cheeks. it was quite until levi broke the silence, finally shouting. letting it out, “why?! why?! why did you do all this?! huh?” another punch to eren’s nose, yet he wouldn’t say anything, his eyelids low as he looked at levi with a grim expression. “god dammit you brat! why?! if you’re the all knowing! why couldn’t you change things? make it so that so many people wouldn’t have to die?!”
‘tell me if there’s another way!’ he had shouted at hange past the cells of his prison. he knew she was going to die. he knew and yet, shouting at her about not being able to change things was the last encounter between them before she burned within eren’s hell. he would see her later, not in this life. but he would cry and beg for her forgiveness as she smiles at him, making jokes about the bang she went out in.
levi’s knuckles were dripping blood now, yet he didn’t feel even the slightest of burning pain. he brought his hands up, the blood dripping down his fingers and onto his palm, painting it red. with a flick of both his wrists, the blood from his palm splattered onto eren’s face, mixing with the blood running down his nose. “this blood,” levi clenched and unclenched his fists, making more blood drip onto eren’s neck. “all of this blood, it’s on you, it’s on me, it’s on us.”
bang! a bullet. a damned bullet. shot by a young girl, a young hotheaded brat that reminded him too much of himself. he had seen it. he knew it was going to happen, yet why? why was he shaking? why was his heart trembling for the potato girl? why did he burst out crying? his own friends family forgetting the way he copes as they accused him of laughing at their friend’s death. how would he laugh? how could he laugh? it was all on him. he knew it. but he had to continue. for them.
with that, levi rolled off of eren, sitting on the wooden floor next to the boy as he took deep breaths, trying to calm himself. what was this feeling? he felt it all the way in his guts, traveling up his vocal cords and settling right above his adam’s apple. his lips trembled, his bloody hands coming up to cover his face, to try and mix the blood with the tears running from his eyes. why was he hitting eren?
they wouldn’t mix. his tears were hot, steaming down his cheeks as it burned him. eren’s blood.. eren’s blood had ran cold. blood shouldn’t be cold, levi of all people knew that, having felt it cover his hands and face one too many times. blood was supposed to be warm.
blood. blood everywhere. it was warm, burning his palms, burning his soul. he was just a kid, yet he had just killed two grown men. blood covered his hands, blood covered his soul. he knew he wouldn’t be the same. he knew the girl wouldn’t be the same after he wrapped the scarf around her.
he looked next to him, eren sitting with his legs crossed as they both sat in the center of the tea shop. levi looked down at his own hands, covered in blood, matching eren’s face. he blinked, eren’s face now clean, levi looked down at his own hands again, the blood was gone.
eren got up, holding his hand out for levi to hold, levi sighed, getting up as he used eren’s hand for leverage. “captain levi, i’ll explain everything to you as fast as i can, but you have to promise me something,” levi looked up at him, a sad expression on his face. “you have to help mikasa kill me. it’s the only way.” eren said as his face contorted into his older self, messy bun with loose strands falling down to his forhead. only way to what? it gave levi a headache.

levi never wanted to visit that god forsaken island again. he was content in marley, he had made a life for himself. his own tea shop, somehow it looked exactly like the one eren showed him. gabi and falco helped him take care of it, while taking care of him without his knowledge. sometimes he would find himself wishing he could visit eren’s grave, so he stared at the wooden floor of the tea shop, blood passing by his eyes as he wishes he didn’t paint the floors with it when he saw eren. he looks away as he feels a tear sliding down his cheek. that selfless brat.

he would always be fighting with the boy, over things that did not need fighting over. but that’s what they say about frenemies, even as they act like they despise eachother, they truly admire eachother secretly. that’s what Jean felt for him. he was jealous sometimes, but mostly out of admiration for the brunette.
he always wanted a peaceful life, wanted to live happily next to someone he loves, he wanted a normal life. he didn’t even want to join the survey corps at first, wanting to thrive in the easygoing state of the military. yet, something about the hotheaded, determined boy sparred him on to risk his life, over and over.
Jean opened his eyes, the sunset could be seen on the distance not too far from the hillside. tall, green spruce trees sat around him, a cool breezing hitting them as he closed his eyes again, taking a deep breath. he was at peace, he didn’t know why but he was comfortable.
he opened his eyes the moment he heard the annoying voice of his rival, “oi, jean,” eren was sitting next to him, hair fanning around his neck. he looked like he was sixteen, but in jean’s mind, he always looked like that.
jean rolled his eyes, closing them and sighing as he laid down, feeling cool grass tickle his ears. “what are you doing here, idiot? don’t bother me when i’m relaxing.”
eren raised a brow as he looked down at jean, a small smile creeping its way accross his lips, “you’re always smart when you’re giving orders jean, what happened now?”
jean opened his eyes again, this time a slight shock twirling in his hazel orbs, leaning on one elbow as his face relaxed a bit, “right. we’re sitting here in your brain or something, as in reality, you’re actually destroying the whole world.”
eren rolled his eyes, a sad smile residing on his features. “listen jean, this isn’t going to be easy, none of this is. i’m just asking you to see eye to eye with me here?”
jean gave eren a sympathetic smile, slowly nodding his head, motioning for him to go on.
eren didn’t expect that, he didn’t expect jean to just sit and listen to his point of view of all people. his face contorted into one of confusion.
jean put his hand on eren’s shoulder, squeezing slightly as he nodded his head again, “i trust your judgment, eren.”
eren could feel tears pool in his eyes, threatening to fall any second, he was quite literally exhausted in every way. he needed a shoulder to cry on, he knew armin saw him breakdown, but it wasn’t enough. he felt like he could cry a river if he let himself. if his pride let him.
there was a heavy weight on his shoulders, the weight of the whole world, the weight of his friends’ and comrads’ lives, the weight of his own dignity, the weight of his decisions. the weight of the past, present, the future.
a single tear rolled down his cheek, he turned his head to the side quickly, wiping it away with his elbow but it was too late, jean had noticed it.
jean frowned, getting concerned as he wrapped one arm around eren, not really knowing what he’s doing.
eren’s body stiffened, his breath getting caught in his throat. jean took the silence as welcoming, wrapping another hand around him hesitantly, bringing eren close to his chest.
involuntary, the next breath eren let out turned into a broken sob, taking himself and jean by surprise as he broke down in jean’s arms, his screams echoing in the mountains and hilltops around them.
after a few seconds, eren calmed down a bit, moving away from jean as he wiped his eyes, hiding his head in his own arms.
jean chuckled, “idiot, did you just cry? what a baby.” he teased. eren looked at him with red eyes, letting out a chuckle, and several after that. playfully hitting jean’s shoulder
after their shared laughter died down, jean took a deep breath, “y’know eren... i never really hated you, i hope that—“ eren caught him off, saying in a low voice “i didn’t either, promise.”
jean gave him a sad smile, tears burning his own eyes as he tried to blink them away, “i know everything that you’re doing is for us. i know the others don’t realize it, but i do. i know it all has a reason behind it, yeah? suicidal bastard.”
eren nodded rapidly, weakly smiling as he spoke “i promise, yes. yes it does, i’m trying—“ his voice shook, “trying to do the right thing here, jean. everything— everything is happening so fast and at the same time and i just—“
jean ran his hand up and down eren’s back, “i know eren, i know. actually no, i’m stupid, and probably not even half as smart as you are. i can’t imagine or even begin to know what you’re going through.”
eren sniffed, looking back at jean with a pleading look in his eyes, “live a long life jean, please.”
jean gave a broken chuckle, “if you let me, yeah, that’s the goal.”
with that they both broke down, their tears not stopping as broken laughs left both the grown men’s mouths, pressing their foreheads together as they couldn’t even tell the difference between laughter or sobs anymore.
“and jean— make sure mikasa’s happy.”
jean tried to speak but eren shushed him,
“please, draw me for her. i know you can. make sure she doesn’t forget my face, yeah?”
“and take care of her jean, make her happy.” he said with a broken sob.

he would hug his own knees as he visited eren’s grave, he would talk to him as if he was there, teasing him and calling him an idiot, in hopes he could hear it from somewhere. he would sit in silence, covering his own ears occasionally. suicidal bastard, he thought as he would repeat their conversation in his head by the hillside as the sun rose.

Connie was always the goofy guy of the group, he’d make eren laugh a lot when they were together. his compassion being shown with jokes and snarky comments here and there.
they were really good friends, eren didn’t know when connie stopped being his goofy self, he didn’t know when he stopped making jokes with him. he had forgot it all, his memories like broken fragments of glasses all messed up in his head.
maybe it was when sasha died, when connie was left alone and broken. when he lost his twin, his other half. when he looked eren in the eyes with horror swirling in them instead of humor, tears rolling down his cheeks as it seemed all of the color from his face was drained and thrown off that damned airship.
maybe he lost all hope in eren then, maybe he thought of him as maniac, a complete psychopath who would laugh at his own family’s death.
little he knew all that eren was going through for them, little he knew all the things the young boy had to endure just because he was born into this world.
hot embers of fire swirled around in the cold air as wind blew, it was silent, peaceful. connie looked around himself, the crackling fire burning brightly on what seemed to be a rocky side of the beach, the sound of waves crashing against nearby stones filling his ears.
he looked up, sky littered in twinkling stars that seemed to be winking just for him. and not long passed before he heard eren’s smooth voice, mildly startled as he looked next to him.
eren was sitting there, staring up at the stars as each of them seemed to twinkle in his emerald green eyes, he looked fifteen, like when they first became friends. like when he would hear his stories and be impressed by the brave boy that wanted to take on all the titans by himself.
“hey, connie, why do you think starts die?”
connie chuckles, “i don’t know, they get sick?”
eren raises his brows, “well, kind of, yeah.”
eren sighed, “fine i’ll tell you, you’ve always been bad at riddles anyway.”
connie pushed him with his elbows slightly as he rolled his eyes.
“they die out, one day they just... get tired and exhausted of shining. even though they look really pretty, they die too.” eren sighed.
connie frowned, slowly realizing where he is and why eren is there. he looked at eren with wide eyes.
eren turned to him, eyes pleading as he spoke, “i’m sorry about sasha, connie. i really am. i swear i couldn’t stop it, if i could, i would. it’s not like that it’s—“
connie stopped him, startling the boy as he hugged him. “it’s okay eren. she would forgive you.”
eren smiled, another tear rolling down his cheek, god dammit.
“your mom can be saved, i’ll save her. i’ll do it connie. live a long life with her.”

he would smile at the sky constantly, always staring at the starts as they twinkled down at him, he knew eren was one of them. he hoped at least. “my mom did live eren, thank you.”

eren would look up to Reiner like his own older brother, like his mentor. times were he fell on his ass during training, reiner would be there to pick him up. to always lend him a hand when he needed it.
he didn’t know he would have to go against eren numerous times, every battle of theirs ending with both of their titans beaten down and their souls exhausted, never really having a clear winner.
reiner hated that part of himself, that part that thought of eren as a younger brother, as an ambitious kid that was too goal-driven for his own good.
he also hated the part of himself that longed to kill eren, to finally fulfill his task that made him lose bertoldt, to finally have that weight off his shoulders. to finally be at peace with his family.
in conclusion, reiner hated all parts of himself. he wanted to put an end to himself, yet he couldn’t do it, he was too cowardly, and he also hated himself for that.
the sound of a river could be heard in the distance as reiner sighed, his head aching and not knowing his surroundings, he wasn’t supposed to be here. he was supposed to be fighting. fighting for his life, fighting for other’s lives.
“oh, reiner.” eren’s voice startled him as he looked to his side, eren’s hair long and facial hair on his face was bringing deja vu to reiner. if he weren’t terrified that day, he would be impressed by how much eren has really grown.
reiner sighed, nodding his head in response. “help my friends, they were once yours too. they still are, reiner.”
reiner felt a stinging in his eyes, yet he couldn’t tell what it was as he looked at eren, nodding rapidly, “i am. i know. you were all my family too, eren.”
reiner cried, eren having a sad smile on his face as he watched him. “i want you to live a long life reiner, just like all of them, okay? please don’t end it yourself.”
reiner’s hands shook as he looked at eren, “i’m not even half the man you are eren.”
“you looked out so well for all of us, i promise i will too, i’ll take care of them, bro.”
“good.”

he never thought suicidal thoughts anymore. he stopped hating himself for everything. he would visit eren’s grave with a smile, thanking him under his breath quietly, checking in on all of his friends more and more as he found his true self.

Annie didn’t feel much towards the boy, he thought he was a hotheaded idiot who was going to meet his end by annie herself.
yet she was wrong, he was way stronger than she thought. and she admired that.
annie blinked, warm sun dancing on skin as she stood up, she was surrounded by flowers, the smell of colorful tulips filling the air with the soft breeze.
she walked through the field, closing her eyes as she breathed in the scent of the flowers, calming her senses.
when she opened them, eren was standing infront of her, hair short and physique small as he looked just like the last time she saw him, the last time she tried to kill him.
“long time, annie.” he mumbled, his hands inside his pockets as he walked closer.
annie clenched her fists by her sides, taking a deep breath as she looked at him, and then she realized it.
she realized where she was and how she was one of the many people who started this. who turned eren into this, a frown sat on her features as she started panicking, wanting to scream.
she felt eren’s hand on her shoulder, calming her breathing slightly and taking her out of her trance.
“calm down, annie. it’s okay, it’s not your fault.”
“i’m sorry, eren.”
eren gave her shoulder a squeeze, reassuring her as he gave her a soft smile, “take care, annie.”

she kept the ring, it reminded her of eren, the only stupid little thing reminding her of all the hardships she’s had to overcome, all the things eren had to overcome as she was frozen in time in that damn basement. she would live her life to the fullest now. his sacrifices wouldn’t go to vain.

and so, even if war continues, even if all eren’s sacrifices barely made a dent in history, at least his friends were thankful. they were thankful as they lived long lives without no longer having to fight for it constantly. thanking eren and holding him dear in their hearts at all times.

⚠️Spoilers for aot's ending, mini rant (yes again, i know, but it's my blog imma say what i want)
Is it weird that idgaf and am genuinely not sad that Eren is dead in canon? And no, I'm not tryna be quirky or different. It was pretty obvious & majority of ppl saw it coming.
The ending was just so flat and boring to me, nothing differing from your typical mushy shonen ending, that it just overshadowed any other feeling i have towards the ending at all. Literally just pure disappointment and me going "Really, isayama.😐" don't even get me started on the extra 8 pages💀
So when i think abt how Eren's dead in canon, i just don't.... care? Like i sat thru all those twitter fanwars and analyses and aot's ending just became increasingly stupid & the fandom just became so disgusting & toxic to be in, it's not fun at ALL.
Like tbh anime fandoms ESPECIALLY aot fandom rlly plummeted downhill the moment quarantine happened. All the tiktok kids and the edgy 13, 14, 15, etc. yr olds joined in masses & it became so lame to be in.
Tumblr is surprisingly generally not too toxic minus the hateful anons big accounts get.
I've moved on really fast and being in the lil bubble world of fanfics is great.
All idgaf abt for the past year is hot fanart of Eren & fanfics where he rearranges my guts🤷🏻‍♀️ Boy did that figurine w his cock out rlly get me

The extra pages for chapter 139 seem to be pretty much finally out!
And they're a bunch panels relying on visual storytelling which need to be put in context by the reader/you need to maybe think about it for 10 seconds instead of 2, something I've learned the internet does not like in storytelling. (Or in general, considering how much misinformation is out there.)
I think Kunihiko Ikuhara's works were my first exposure to this element of the internet in full force; they're some of the lowest-rated stories in some of the typical websites where anime is discussed and they're all mostly very reliant on metaphor and visual storytelling.
I've seen 12 episodes of Revolutionary Girl Utena and a little bit of Yurikuma Arashi and I think you really need to completely engage with those stories to get what is going on. Almost all of the dialog in those stories seems to matter and to need as much of the context as possible to understand.
And to me a story which asks you to engage and put things together for yourself is what I look for in art and I think is art.
The reason why I have yet to go back to those stories is because they are so very dense and you really just need to be in a certain mindset to watch them.
AoT Chapter 122 and now these new pages are 100% visual storytelling.
AoT Chapter 122 in particular is still one of my favourite manga chapters ever because of how it portrayed a character's perspective with very limited dialog.
The thing with AoT is that I think these moments of visual storytelling are like a less dense and complex version of Ikuhara's storytelling, but they have the same elements.
A lot of context-dependent information in relatively few panels is in 122 and 139, that's why I think people get the sense the story is excusing Eren, for example.
Most of those complaints I've felt are very bad faith, but if I believe in the good and intelligence of humanity for once, maybe it really is that awkward prose that confuses and offends people, not the desire to be morally superior over a comic.
In that sense I think people read the words "thank you" Armin says to Eren and nothing else around it or just find the phrasing to be strange.
They don't go to reread the previous chapter or arc just in case they might've missed something.
Months/years-long breaks between material also assist in not really considering anything else but that one chapter in that one month.
And it just so happens art is also a very individual emotional experience, so "monkey brain" just fully kicks in, too.
To me if you think about it, what the story is saying is pretty obvious the moment Eren became the antagonist. This shift happened in Marley, 40 chapters or so ago.
But this is just what *my* mind leads me to and makes connections with based on the information I have absorbed from the story.
And it's not just that, too. I make connections to what the story was trying to do with Reiner, Kenny, Bert, Erwin or Annie because they were also serial killers/murderers the story took effort in humanising.
The importance of individual perspective and what these characters individually think and how they view themselves seems to be one of the most important aspects of the story.
Because ultimately one of the most important thematic threads of the story seems to be understanding different perspectives.
So why is Eren any different than all of the other mass murderers in the cast?
Because all of the big murderers in the cast get empathy and moments where characters try to understand them, no?
To actually address the pages, here's the general points and my thoughts:
-The whole deal with Mikasa and OG Ymir is that I think Mikasa tries to again, find the good in OG Ymir's suffering.
Her having her children lead to the lives of many people, including hers to be born and Mikasa thanks her for that.
This is a parallel to Eren, whose actions at least gave his friends their lives back. This also ties into Armin's point in chapter 137 about living life for those good moments and Mikasa's promise in chapter 138 to remember Eren for all of the good he did for her.
-Mikasa having a family with probably Jean (which is probably implied with the small scene on the boat) is such a minor thing that I just find hard to care about it at all. The focus on Mikasa really wasn't with it the point to emphasize how she now has kids.
And Mikasa and Historia are still the only characters we see get kids. There really actually isn't anything with anyone else (the spoiler about Armin and Annie doesn't seem to be real at all).
-People visiting the tree is a much more limited panel than the initial leaked images lead on. It's not a tourist attraction, it's something I think the families of Eren's friends ended up visiting. So this also gives it a much more "selfish" vibe.
-Armin's talk with Eren and the scene on the boat with Pieck now gets some pretty nice additional context (makes sense considering Isayama considered it one of the bits to be clumsy himself) because of the panels of Paradis at war in the future.
Those panels don't necessarily say Paradis was completely destroyed by war (we see the black-haired kid), but the alternatives also make the same point: Eren's methods didn't really bring peace.
It sort of gives the promise Armin made to Eren and his words on the boat a more sadder tinge.
Armin tried so hard to make something good out of the mess Eren left everyone. He tried hard for diplomacy to triumph, but war still happened because that's how humanity works.
There's also the layer of violence begetting violence and extremism also hurting your own people. The Jaegerist movement Eren ended up creating probably caused this war on Paradis. I think that's the implied thing with Historia's speech.
The final layer to Eren's actions is the giant Titan tree that literally grew out of his grave: what he did just lead to more cycles and the whole mess might just start again.
But we don't really actually see that happen. It's only a possibility.
Will the kid go in there to get the power and save his people from misery or will he consider the past?
We don't know. It all depends on what he knows of the past and this tree, how his parents presented the past to him, how the world shaped his perspective and yes, also his nature, too.
But the point is, Eren's actions had some good, but mostly bad consequences.
Puts Annie's and Pieck's comments in a stronger perspective, too.
I still maintain this ending is good. Not my favourite material from AoT, but good.
And I'll repeat what I said before that repeating the story's point in more concrete ways gives satisfaction in its own right.

hello! have you seen the recent aot leaks regarding the extra pages in volume 134? if so, what do you think?
Hello Anon!  I have seen the leaks, but I’m a bit loath to comment on them too much until we have more information, because how many times have we been misled by partial spoilers?!  Having said that, I’m happy that Mikasa was able to move on and live her life, and I don’t think that in any way invalidates or diminishes the relationship she had with Eren.  I’m less keen on her taking her children and grandchildren to visit his grave though, primarily on account of, y’know, the whole mass murder thing.  
One thing that intrigued me is the leak about Paradis being destroyed either by “war” or “civil war”.   There seems to be some doubt about the veracity of this particular spoilers, however for Paradis to be torn apart by civil war would actually seem like a sad but fitting end.  After all, Eren left a legacy of extremism that transformed Paradis into a militaristic imperial state.  The fact that Historia had to protect Jean and Connie’s families suggests that the Yeagerists were already persecuting innocent people.  I could easily believe that the Eldian Empire would tear itself apart in civil war. 
My one hope for the additional pages was that we would see unambiguous condemnation of Eren’s actions and my one fear is that they would mess with Levi’s ending.   There hasn’t been any indication of either of those things in the leaks so far, but we only have snippets of the extra pages.  At this stage I’d be happy if Levi didn’t appear at all.  He’s had his closure, please leave him be Isayama!

No Escape
Spoilers for SnK/AoT and The Sorrows of Young Werther ahead:
[I was going to try and have something each week, to try and get used to writing regularly again, but I couldn’t get my Tumblr app to work right over the summer.
Then recently in a different forum, I was trying to work out a theory in this one group, but then in a different group I'm in, they were mocking all the overdone old theories including mine. Ack, how embarrassing. See, I missed that theory because by the time I joined, a similar, but sexier theory had taken over. Luckily the person I was asking in the first group didn't seem to care that it was an old theory, though I get the feeling we weren't quite understanding what the other one was saying. Aw well, it's hard to get all us humans(?) on board at the same time for anything.]
I don’t really plan to focus on just one thing here, like Attack on Titan. I will try and mix things up eventually, however...I had recently been reading Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther as translated by Catherine Hutter (different translation here) and there was this line from Werther’s writings, “Surrounded by the heavens and the earth and the powerful web they weave between them, I reel with dread. I can see nothing but an eternally devouring, eternally regurgitating monster.” The obsessive part of my brain was like, the heavens and earth part reminds me of some of the songs like Requiem der Morgenröte and the monster idea is like the titans devouring humans, but without a proper digestive system just vomiting all their victims back up.
So this is kind of sad, I thought, let’s move on, but then I get to the point where Werther recites his translation of Ossian.
And I quote, “Loud was the grief of the heroes, loudest of all though was Armin’s heartbreaking sigh.” Like seriously? There’s more, “Why art thou so wretched, Armin, chieftain of the sea-girt isle of Gorma?” Of course he has a connection to the sea. One more bit, “Carmor, thou hast not lost a son, thou hast not been deprived of a daughter. Colgar, the brave lives, and Annira, fairest of maidens. The branches of thy house blossom, Carmor, but Armin is the last of his race.” Ha ha, well hopefully if the anime concludes differently, it won’t be quite that direction.
So since there is no escape, on to some months old promotional pictures and controversy.

Here's the magazine cover art. Most of the kids look cute to me. My little Bertholdt looking surprisingly confident, but I wasn't quite sure why it looked like he had a turtleneck on, though I see now it is similar to what he's wearing on the book cover. It took me a minute with Ymir and Sasha, too. Though that might be Ymir's orphan clothes and Sasha is wearing her forest fashion.
Then of course, there was this panel from the extra pages, still causing controversy as I write this. The arguments being that it's Mikasa and Jean with their baby, Mikasa with an adopted kid and a supportive Armin, Mikasa with a random new guy or even Mikasa with the unnamed former rock thrower now farmer in Historia’s pregnancy story. To be honest this particular panel doesn't even have to be Mikasa, sure there seems to be faint lines indicating a scarf but I wouldn't have even noticed if I hadn't seen a fan coloring of it. Now there are other panels where the woman does appear to be more clearly Mikasa, but I like that this panel is more open to interpretation.

My first take is that this is Resurrected Freckles Ymir holding baby Bertholdt (hey, if anyone was going to come back as a baby, might as well be the guy who spent half his time in the fetal position) and they are with Reiner sporting the popular new Repentant Farmer look. They are visiting Eren's wormy head to reminisce about that crazy day they spent in those big trees. Sure they were at each other's throats then, but they can laugh about it now...(confession, I was going to say they were visiting Historia's grave after she succumbed to the plague, but that seemed too sad after Ymir got resurrected and all).
Second take is that is Resurrected Sasha holding her baby Meaty Potatoes whom she had with Niccolo who is also sporting the Repentant Farmer style to promote his new farm to table menu at the restaurant. They are visiting the grave of the meal that went cold on That Day.
Third take is that is Armin holding some baby plucked from a refugee camp and he is with Jean, who is just wearing his tourist clothes. They are visiting the grave of a victim of the cycle of violence. They are trying to promote peace by saving random babies and taking in as many grave sites and memorials as they can on tour. They have also started a band. (Honestly though, I don't really see Armin dying his hair plus he'd probably wear a ponytail a little lower. I guess I could have said it was Pieck and she won the baby on a bet).

This is the final volume cover when opened up. At first I thought it was okay from a distance, but a little strange close up, though it's grown on me somewhat. Still some strangeness to it, like the head sizes, but maybe that's just to emphasize that they're all children.
I like to point out that front to back on one side, is Eren, Mikasa, and Armin and front to back on the other the first three are Reiner, Bertholdt, and Annie (who might have to pee, not sure).
It's just that when comparing EMA to RBA, a lot will say it's Annie and Mikasa who are paralleled and then Bertholdt and Armin. Both comparisons have some sense to them. Mikasa and Annie seem reserved but are skilled, both took out titans in the Trost armory that one of the others had failed (I won't point out that they were Sasha and Connie) and they have been pitted against each other during 104 training and when Annie was in titan form.
Armin and Bertholdt are harder for me to compare, both don't seem to be really killers at heart, though Armin seems to have a darker dark side, both have been shown with books though Bertholdt doesn't have a special earth-shaking book.
However Armin and Annie are both the short blonde one who does the detective work and are trying to understand what exactly it means to be a good or bad person.
Mikasa and Bertholdt are both fiercely loyal to a limited number of people, have dark hair with a forelock, thin brows and are great at calling out a specific name, while Mikasa might win by quantity, I think Bertholdt wins with quality. It's hard to outdo jumping out of a barrel hurtling at high speed above the rooftops crying out a loved one's name just because you see that person is hurt (slight understatement). Bertholdt has also twice transformed to injuries caused by Mikasa. They both also try to entice their loved one with thoughts of going home.

Eren and Reiner seem a slightly closer fit, moving forward because they secretly want their selfish dream to be fulfilled even when they realize innocents will suffer or be killed for it. Though their feelings of guilt levels seem harder to compare.
Of course, we also see Reiner paralleled with Armin, both had moments where they saw themselves as weak, both were offered a hand up by a friend, Armin refusing in the one instance, Reiner accepting.

So trying to find parallels or similarly, mirroring or doubling, can be fun, but tricky. Like hey, Marco is Marcel, and Jean is Porco, and Erwin is Willy Tybur, and on and on but then you realize someone else is a better fit or it only works superficially, and then it confuses the issue.
Or to get even more confusing or perhaps sillier, if these characters were in trains on parallel tracks going at the same speed, would they be going in the same direction, able to have some sense of each other, but not really supposed to meet, or are they going in opposite directions, just a fleeting glimpse then they are gone?
Or what if it's more like light through a prism dividing up into seven separate entities, and everyone has six other kindred people, different but born of the same light, (okay, I'm kind of stealing someone else's idea here, but I'm not sure who to credit, sorry).
Anyway, explaining how EMA can compare to RBA might make for an interesting essay, but is it the right approach?
Then again, similar to Mikasa, we have Bertholdt wearing a scarf:

Well Bertholdt will have to be careful, while scarves can be warm and cozy, they are also an entanglement risk.
Oh, looks like Bertholdt started a book club and is showing the guys more quotes from "The Sorrows of Young Werther".

And then, my good friend, we treat the little creatures, who are our equals, and whom we should use as models, as our inferiors. They are not supposed to have a will of their own. Why not? Don't we demand free will? What gives us the right to make such a decision?"
Well, a little long maybe, getting to the point, but I guess it's fine...perhaps Bertholdt will find something more light-hearted to read for the next book club meeting.
