So Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness is a… flawed game. And it isn’t a euphemism for “completely terrible”. It has it’s good points, but it is flawed, unfinished, rushed out by Core Design due to an unwise deadline change from the publisher Eidos interactive. It’s release in 2003 was ultimately a disaster, and led to Core Design’s collapse, with Eidos giving the TR series to Crystal Dynamics.

But it is a very interesting game, because there is a lot of the original vision left in the final product (I almost wrote finished, but that is not the right word). And that vision is perhaps the most imaginative and grandest of any game in the series, except the first one.

The first TR game pretty much invented the genre of 3d action-adventure games, and the series had until AoD only made relatively minor changes to that game’s formula. It worked to keep things fresh and finally the process produced The Last Revelation, which took the TR 1 formula to its heights in my opinion. The wheels only came off with Chronicles, another rushed game.

The idea was for AoD to go well beyond truly re-invent the genre of 3D Action-adventure, and Core Design had a lot of bright ideas for that. They wanted to write a more elaborate story than the rather utilitarian and laconic storytelling of earlier games, replace the linear level-to-level system with open world elements, complicate the platforming with Lara having a stamina meter, have Lara be able to do stealth and hand-to-hand combat, and have a RPG like skill system where Lara could upgrade her abilities.

These were good ideas, and ahead of the curve, practically all of these things would be commonplace in 3d action-adventures by the 2010s. It’s easy to think of an alternative history, where a version AoD had been succesful and would have become regarded as an influential milestone game and genre-turning point, in the same way as the original TR game.

But of course, in reality, it wasn’t. What is more frustrating, most of these elements are kind of there, but implemented in an unfinished and clunky manner.

Perhaps the open world is the best example of this, since the game suggests one early on in the game, but never actually delivers. After escaping from the cops, you arrive in a “paris ghetto”. There you can talk to people standing around, there is a pawn shop where you can sell things you found for money, a (useless) shop even. But the area is very tiny, yet there is still a lot of loading to walk around it.

And ultimately the area is very linear. The only element of non-linearity is that there is two ways to progress the story.

The money system is actually bizarre, because it is not that useful and only for a very brief part of the game. You need some money to advance the story, but it is not a lot. The aforementioned non-pawn shop is useless too, and it’s inclusion is bizarre. You can walk in and talk to an npc who says he sells healing items, and that is all you can do, you can’t actually buy stuff from him.  And pretty much all the use of the money ends when the relatively short parisian ghetto sequence is finished.

The pawn shop broker dies and that is the end of the money system in this game and the game’s attempts at being open world. You can also miss visiting him before he dies, and you will have an inventory full of useless junk you can’t get rid of. Not that selling the junk for money does more than declutter the inventory.  Except one instance later on where you can buy a gun for 800 euros (without any spare magazines, lol), the money you have left just sits in your inventory for the rest of the game. It still shows up as a prominent part of your inventory, but it is useless.

The hand-to-hand combat is pretty much useless too. It is slow, clunky, doesn’t hurt the enemies a lot and there is no way to block, so you just get hurt a lot. Ammunition isn’t that scarce, so it is easier to just shoot your way through.

The stealth sections are very clunkily designed in general, there is practically never an opportunity for Lara to use it. It is often only due to save scumming and trial and error you can take out enemies with stealth.  Lara can take out enemies silently from behind, but she can only do it when the enemy is standing still. This is a weird limitation to the stealth mechanic which makes any attempt to use it even clunkier.

The skill upgrades are perhaps the most bizarre element of the game’s design. There are only two, upgrades for Lara, upper body and lower body. They aren’t upgraded through gaining experience by doing certain actions repeatedly, no no no, they are upgraded by performing actions on specific objects. If you push this random wall or block, or jump this gap, you get a strength upgrade. If you do the exact same thing on any other wall, block or jump any other gap, you get nothing.

This goes so far that there even are a few pushable blocks that only exist to give you upgrades. This is how I experienced them: I got curious about them and started to push them around, wondering what they are for and then I got a random upgrade. That upgrade is their entire purpose, and the way I discovered seems to be the only reasonable way for the player to discover them. This is exactly as jarring and bizarre as it sounds.

The skill upgrades are so slight and gradual too that they aren’t satisfying at all. You are supposed to have a better stamina bar or jump farther, but you barely feel the difference. It gets to the point that I’m really unsure if they accumulate and Lara can actually climb for longer and jump faster at the end of the game. I think they do, but really unsure, that is how unsatisfying they feel.

The more-fleshed out story isn’t actually that bad. It still feels very undeveloped and has tons of loose ends, but the general atmosphere the game creates with it is good. It’s a way darker story than what we have seen so far in this series, but it still keeps that pulpy b-movie feel from the earlier games.

The story has a problem of putting Lara in these modern urban environments for most of the game. It is really only once or twice you find yourself in something that feels like a classic TR environment, although that is a minor complaint in face of the game’s other problems. Paris in the beginning of the game at least has a nice mood to it at night.

Then there is Kurtis Trent, and his introduction is as weird as anything. He was meant to be introduced here to have his own spin-off series of games, but that never happened. His role in the plot is similar to that of the Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: another heroic faction besides the main protagonist vying for control over the artifact the villain is trying to get. Only his backstory as a kind of warrior monk isn’t really explained in the game that well, so you aren’t really told what his motivations are. It is actually better explained in the comic book adaptation.

You play Kurtis for three levels towards the end of the game and it is kind of jarring. I play Tomb Raider games because I want to play Lara Croft, not this random guy the game just introduced. His main difference from Lara is that he has psychic skills but they are only used in cutscenes, so it doesn’t really affect gameplay. So he just feels as a male version of Lara, with possibly even clunkier controls. His addition, especially as a playable character feels unnecessary. His role really only makes sense as creating potentials for sequels and spin-offs that never happened.

The sexual tension between him and Lara is odd too. It’s introduced in of all things a scene where Kurtis is holding a gun to Lara’s head and frisks her for a painting she raided. And the cutscene portrays this in an almost pornographic manner to imply that this is a sensual experience for both parties. It is as uncomfortable and weird as it sounds. It seems whoever responsible for that scene didn’t realize that Kurtis running his hand sensually over Lara’s body is creepy rather than romantic, because he literally has a gun to her head.

But we haven’t reached the major problem with this game: the controls. It’s hard to describe in words but they just feel clumsy and imprecise. The old TR tank controls were clunky, but they were at least precise. I can see why they felt it needed updating, but they failed. It makes the platforming and gunfighting more difficult than it needs to be.

Lara moves frustratingly slowly too, and the reason why reveals what a messy development this game had. Apparently they were planning to have running speed upgrades too, but it was cut. And they left Lara’s speed at about 70-80% of the maximum speed, instead of just giving her the top speed from the start. And the top speed is still in the game’s files, but unusable without modding.

Yet despite it all, I still have a soft spot for this game. The mood the story creates is great, helped by   some good art design and sometimes there are decent parts that re-creates some of the old Tomb Raider magic.

There are also fan-made mods/patches that really improve the experience. I recommend installing this mod, it ups the running speed, which makes the game a lot more fun.

Even the flaws of Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness can be worth experiencing. This game goes wrong in weird and interesting ways games seldom do. The skill upgrade system is strange, but also funny. And for all its flaws, AoD is an endearing game. Most bad games are bad because they are shovelware made entirely without creativity and ambitions. This is not the case with AoD, this game had a lot of energy and creativity put into it.  What it wanted to do was imaginative and clever. It just wasn’t given the opportunity to fulfil all those hopes Core Design put into the game. Instead it became a mess of a game, but an oddly likeable one.

It gives me a feeling I never really experienced with another game. Playing it, I don’t feel so much frustrated or angry at its flaws  (except possibly at Eidos by extension) but a weird kind of sadness, mixed with sympathy with the developers, that it wasn’t as good as it was originally intended to be.

Apple Watch Series 5 Review

The Apple Watch has been the staple smartwatch for almost everybody in recent years since it’s initial release. With increased health monitoring, a new always on feature for the display, and several other tweaks, is the Apple Watch Series 5 worth buying?

Let’s just get it out on the table now, this watch design-wise, is essentially the same exact model as last year’s Series 4, and while that design is beautiful and sleek, I think we were all expecting a change, or just something new to look forward to in late 2019. I’m assuming that this fact has a lot to do with the discontinuation of the Series 4 model, while I really haven’t done any research to back that statement up. 

There are a few key differences between the series 4 and the series 5 models of Apple Watch. Some of these differences bring pros, and maybe a few cons as well. Apple decided to launch the S5 watches with two new build materials, ceramic and titanium. Aside from fashion, I think that the only thing this decision might affect is the weight of the watch. Mostly everyone I know has the aluminum and are perfectly happy with that, and didn’t have to spend any unnecessary coin. Another added feature is the built in compass for the watch, pretty cool right? I’m one of those directionally challenged people, so in rare cases this might actually help me out. The compass is the main complication in one of the new watch faces called ‘explorer’, and well, it is for exactly who it states its for. A hike might be the only situation a lot of people find themselves using this new feature for, but still, it’s there if you need it, and I like to have options.

Not last, not least, but definitely the most attractive new feature on the S5 is the always on display (AOD). Now, I thought to myself, “why in the world would I need my watch to be displaying its face if I’m not looking directly at it?” But then quickly found myself having flashbacks of looking at my S3/4 Apple Watch and doing that awkward, forced wrist movement to try to get the watch to show me the time. SO, I am now a huge fan of it. The watch will display your watch face at all times in a dimly lit fashion, until you turn your wrist and look at it. Following that, the display will quickly brighten, and react as if it knows that you’re looking at it for some info. I know it may seem quirky, but not having to put so much effort into getting your watch to light up and do it’s job is actually much more convenient, while also being one of those things that you don’t realize until you experience it for yourself. After having the S5 for some time, it really has highlighted the fact that my biggest complaint for every Apple Watch before this was not having an always on display feature. 

Now, would this even be a review if I didn’t pick apart the tech we’re talking about? Con time. Oddly enough, the battery life of the S5, so far, has really not made a difference in my day to day life, though I have noticed a significant drop in available battery at the end of the day. I use my watch to constantly check the time, look at all my notifications before I pick up my phone or iPad, and just about every way it can be used ASIDE from tracking workouts. Yeah, I don’t exercise nearly as much as I should, if at all. Sue me. All that aside though, it is my understanding that workout tracking is a big battery drainer on your watch and mixed in with the always on feature, there has been some pretty negative feedback regarding battery life. My days, while some of them are incredibly long, have been managed by my S4 Watch with 40-50% of battery life to spare before I’m hitting the pillow. Without tracking any workouts, I’m ending the day (12 hours at least) with 20-30% battery left on this new S5 Watch. Now obviously, this is undoubtedly an all day battery, and works just fine for me considering I don’t use my watch to track my sleep or any workouts, but for others, those features are the main reason they bought the watch in the first place. With AOD, your battery is going to struggle to make it through a full day if you don’t take extra steps to preserve it, and this is something that most people are definitely looking forward to being fixed with 2020’s Watch release. Keep in mind, you do have the option to turn this feature off, and trust me I understand completely how undesirable that option is. 

Lastly, value. The Apple Watch Series 5 Aluminum (44mm) comes in at a hefty $429 for the non-cellular version, adding $100 for cellular. The 40mm size starts at $399. These are the same prices as last years models. Now, can you justify spending this sort of money on a watch? Well, consider this. This is the worlds leading smartwatch, and no matter who you are, you can find some sort of benefit from using it. Also consider this; With so few new features, and the same price as last years models, doesn’t it make sense to just wait for the release of the series 6? My opinion is as follows; For me personally, I utilize every part of this watch that is non health related, and it’s works perfectly for my lifestyle and what I do. The purpose of a watch is to act as a resource to you, and that’s accomplished with this device. With that said, there are many smartwatches in the world that do not cost as much money, and they all certainly tell the time just as well, but will not be packed full of features in the same way the the Apple Watch is. Value is what something is worth to YOU, not just a dollar amount.

Ford Performance Introduces The Coyote Power Module

Since STREET RODDER magazine began the growth in the availability of hobby-related products has been phenomenal. Back when the magazine began we were all grateful when disc brake kits and wiring harnesses appeared, a little surprised when reproduction frames and new steel bodies came on the scene, but the availability of high-performance crate motors could have been the biggest shock of all. Suddenly engines with the latest factory technology and offering amazing performance and in many cases they were covered by a warranty—we were in the age of 1-800-horsepower.

One of the most sophisticated crate engines available is Ford’s Ti-VCT (Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing), or as it’s better known, the Coyote. A truly modern, all-aluminum four-valve DOHC V-8, the Ford Performance 2015-2017 5.0L Coyote crate engine delivers 435 hp at 6,500 rpm and 400 ft-lb of torque at 4,250 rpm on premium fuel—all this in a package that tips the scales at 445 pounds.

While a Coyote in a crate has been a hit, Ford Performance decided to make a good thing better with the introduction of the new Coyote Power Module Kits. These complete engine and transmission packages include the latest 5.0L Coyote engine, and come with a TREMEC six-speed manual transmission (PN M-9000-PMCM) or a six-speed 6R80 automatic (PN M-9000-PMCA) and the appropriate engine controller and wiring harness.

Engines

Both Coyote Power Module Kits come with a 2015-2017 Mustang GT 5.0L 435hp Coyote engine. These are the Gen II design of the Coyote series that incorporates a variety of improvements over the 2011-2014 Gen I engines.

Many of the improvements made in 2015 help the engine breathe better—they include larger intake and exhaust valves, revised intake and exhaust cams, stiffer valvespring, and redesigned head castings with revised ports. In addition, a new intake manifold was introduced with charge motion control valves to partially close off port flow at lower engine speeds. This increases the air charge tumble and swirl for improved air/fuel mixing, resulting in better fuel economy, idle stability, and lower emissions, and the variable camshaft timing feature now has mid-lock phasers allowing better control of the valve timing over a broader range of engine.

Ford also made some changes to the block’s internals. There are new sinter forged connecting rods that were used on the Boss 302 engine that are more durable for high-rpm operation and the piston tops have deeper cutouts to clear the new larger valves. The Gen II blocks now use 11mm head bolts and crankshafts have been rebalanced to support higher-rpm operation.

One difference between these engines that is important to understand is the change to the Gen II oiling system. Gen II blocks have an added oil return and require the matching Gen II OFA (oil filter adaptor) for the spin-on filter, if used (these adapters now include an oil cooler). When a remote filter (Ford Performance PN M-6881-M50A) or filter/cooler is used the top hole delivers oil from the remote mount oil filter adapter into the engine. The bottom hole delivers oil coming out of the engine to the filter, which is opposite of a Gen I engine. Due to the one-way check valve in a spin-on filter, connecting the lines incorrectly on either generation engine will starve it for oil with disastrous results.

Engine Controller and Wiring Harness

The engine control pack and wiring harness is truly plug-and-play and includes a power distribution module, airbox, air inlet tube, MAF sensor, upper and lower radiator hoses, and HEGO sensors. There is an OBD-II diagnostic port to assist in vehicle calibration upload and problem diagnosis and an electronic throttle control accelerator pedal that eliminates throttle cable routing problems. It should be noted that the PCM with Ford Performance calibration requires a return-type fuel system and will not work with a return-less fuel system.

Transmissions

With PN M-9000-PMCM, Ford Performance supplies a TREMEC six-speed transmission. These heavy-duty manual transmissions are designed to withstand up to 700 lb-ft of torque, while providing quick and precise shifts throughout the rev range. These T56 Magnum transmissions come with multiple shifter mounting options and provisions for either an electronic or mechanical speedometer. Also included in the Coyote Power Module kit are starter and starter index plate, Quicktime steel bellhousing, roller pilot bearing, clutch fork/throw-out bearing, clutch kit, and installation hardware.

The Ford Performance Coyote Power Module kit, PN M-9000-PMCA, includes the rugged 6R80 automatic transmission with a lockup torque converter as found in a 2017 Mustang GT. Along with all the previously mentioned engine components, this kit comes with flexplate, torque converter, transmission lines, wiring, and gear shifter assembly.

If you’re looking for the latest in a high-tech engine and transmission package for a street rod and want to avoid the headaches that come with mismatched components and complicated electronics, the search is over. The new Coyote Power Module kits from Ford Performance have everything necessary in one complete package, and you know the completed installation will function as it should. After all, who knows how to make it happen better than Ford engineers?

Ford Performance offers two versions of the Coyote Power Module with the 435hp Ti-VCT engine. PN M-9000-PMCM comes with a six-speed TREMEC manual transmission.

For those who prefer an automatic transmission, Coyote Power Module, PN M-9000-PMCA, includes a 6R80 six-speed AOD with a lockup converter.

Coyote Power Modules use 2017 Mustang GT 5.0L engines with a composite intake manifold that mounts an 80mm single bore “drive-by-wire” throttle body. Note the combination oil cooler/oil filter mount.

Thanks to its advanced design and sophisticated electronics the new Coyote engine can boast an 11.0:1 compression ratio. Premium fuel is recommended but not required.

The factory pan holds 8 quarts of oil. Note the bolts above the pan rail—they’re for the cross-bolted main caps.

The PCM in the Controls Pack has a custom software and calibration dataset specifically modified/developed by Ford Performance engineers to provide peak performance and reliability, tailored to custom vehicle builds.

The control pack wiring harness is plug-and-play. It includes the power distribution box, which must be mounted within 60 inches of the vehicle battery as dictated by the B+/Ground Lead Lengths of the controls pack wiring harness.

This assembly provides fused electrical power to the Ford Performance distribution box. The instruction manual points out that it’s extremely important that the ground eyelet has a clean connection.

Normally the 6R80s shifting is completely controlled electronically—in “SelectShift” mode the driver controls shifting.

This is the air cleaner assembly and mass airflow sensor. The calibration of the PCM requires use of this airbox/MAF sensor system exactly as received. Any changes to the air inlet system will result in changes to how the air entering the engine is measured and will require modification to the PCM’s calibration.

How a Coyote cools is a critical issue. Ford cautions, “If a heater circuit is not used then the heater supply must be connected to the heater return to allow air to be purged from the righthand cylinder head and provide sufficient coolant flow through the righthand cylinder head. Install a 5/16-inch-diameter (0.3125) restrictor in this hose.”

This upgraded and improved alternator kit will reduce parasitic horsepower loss by slowing the armature speed with a larger pulley that also reduces drag. This high-performance, high-rpm alternator also has a one-way clutch included that helps to prevent belt hop-off during upshifts.

When Ford Performance says everything is included, they mean it. Shown here are the access cover for the starter registration plate, driveshaft flange, starter, wiring, and the transmission hardware.

Found under PN M-6038-M50, the Ford Performance motor mount kits contains a pair of aluminum engine brackets, rubber frame cushions, and all the necessary hardware.

Manual transmission kits use a clutch position switch to send the pedal position to the PCM and to act as a starter safety switch.

Two UEGO (universal exhaust gas oxygen) sensors provide feedback to the PCM for closed-loop air/fuel ratio control by measuring the quantity of oxygen present in exhaust leaving the combustion chamber.

Viewed from the transmission side, this plate is commonly called a spacer but in fact is a starter index plate, which serves as a locator for the starter.

The starter bolts to the transmission, however the large round hole in the registration locates it properly.

A unique feature of the 6R80 transmission is the lack of a splined output shaft.
