YEAR OF THE FANGAN - JUNE EDITION
ꕥ DANGANRONPA: A QUARTER PAST DESPAIR ꕥ
It's time to check out yet another story that was advertised on TV Tropes! However, this one’s a truly unfortunate case due to being stuck in post-prologue limbo since 2018, and having all the trappings of a really high-quality story to boot.
Well, sure, this prologue goes through the usual plot beats most fangans do (wake up in a strange room, meet students, meet mascots, someone nearly gets killed attacking said mascot), what draws me in the most is the set-up for the central theme: the desire to make a change in one’s life. the main character Fuyuko exemplifies this the most since he joined the Akihara Technical Institute for Gifted Individuals as a way to find fulfillment in his life, but additionally during the second half of the prologue, one character's brutally lambasted for living out a miserable, meaningless existence. Building blocks are being set up to explore each character's perspectives on their own lives, something my ensemble-cast-loving heart can't help but appreciate.
In terms of set dressing, I also really enjoy the location in which the killing game takes place. A "time" motif is clearly present, with most of the rooms giving off an oppressive, grudgey vibe (shoutout to the pool with toxic water and dirty pumps especially, that visual is nasty as hell). The rules at the end also note each student will be working within the area, adding an extra bit of interaction to these locations.
Finally, I have to talk about the art the story has interspersed through it, something I’m always a sucker for. While all they consist of are the intro cards and the chapter's title card, both look really nice: the title card is drawn beautifully, while the intro cards look stylish as hell (with special mention to how a clock blocks off each character’s pixel sprite. Love how that ties into the story's theme!). Special mention goes to how Fuyuko, Iori and Budou are drawn, as I think they have the best sprites out of everyone in the story.
Unfortunately, there’s not much else to really talk about, as this is mainly a set-up for the characters / setting (a problem I sadly see happening frequently when covering prologues here), but I still do suggest giving this one a quick read!
FORMAT: Written
WHERE TO FIND IT: Ao3
FAVORITE MOMENT: Monokuma mercilessly ripping one of the classmate's livelihood to shreds in front of everyone.
FAVORITE CHARACTER: Katami Shishigami, the Ultimate Doomsday Prepper. He’s a man who speaks in overly-flowery expressions, to the point where it’s ridiculous (my personal favorite line from him: “What if I were a serial killer with a magical laser gun and shot you just now? You would be dead: shot, evaporated, murdered on the spot.”). While stoic in nature, it’s clear he’s a little loopy. Is also in serious need of deodorant.
OTHER STANDOUT CHARACTERS: Arisu Jukai, a level-headed woman who takes an empathetic approach to criminals, wishing to fix the society that failed them / find more humane ways to perform capital punishment despite being an executioner, and Susumu Iori, a horror-obsessed IT specialist whose crankiness and sarcasm are always a joy to read.
