Maeve//i don't belong, and my beloved, neither do you
Request:Â Could you please do something else with Maeve? Perhaps something where reader works with Maeve on an English project and she's surprised that they have so much in common. She realizes she has feelings for her somehow after that? Sorry that's sort of rubbish, have a swell day/night.
hey! whatâs up everybody! i hope everyone is well, and i hope you like this!! title is from âthe lakesâ by taylor swift!Â
- English projects are never funÂ
- I mean, who finds constant stress and a deadline thatâs always far too close fun?
- Nobody
- Thatâs who
- Well apart from Mrs Jones
- Your year 9 English teacher who made every minute of her classes a living hell
- And who mysteriously went missing half way through the year after having a screaming match with a fellow English teacher
- When she was supposed to be teaching you Romeo & Juliet.Â
- One day she was accusing Miss Newman of being a terrible teacher and purposefully bumping up students grades so she looked betterÂ
- And the next day both her and Miss Newman were goneÂ
- And you only got a replacement teacher when you moved into year 10
- Right now thoughÂ
- Its seems Miss Sands is going through some stuffÂ
- Because not only did she give you an assignment on Friday with a deadline of MondayÂ
- She also chose your partners instead of letting you choose your own
- Which is why youâre stood outside of Maeveâs in the pouring rain
- On a frankly miserable Saturday morningÂ
- It seems the weather knew exactly what sort of weekend you were facingÂ
- And decided to make it even worse.Â
- By the third knockÂ
- Youâre about to give upÂ
- The curtains are still drawnÂ
- And youâve seen more movement in a graveyardÂ
- Plus
- You kind of already assumed you would be doing the project aloneÂ
- Maeve Wiley was known for being very...
- ...independantÂ
- And group projects are no differentÂ
- You actually think she may be more independent during group projects
- So as soon as Miss Sands paired you togetherÂ
- You knewÂ
- You were 99% sure thatÂ
- Youâd do your thing
- Sheâd do hersÂ
- And then five minutes before the presentationÂ
- You would figure out a way to connect the two.
- Anywayyyy
- While daydreaming about a time when you wonât have any assignmentsÂ
- And making awkward, accidental eye contact with Maeveâs neighboursÂ
- The door in front of you opensÂ
- Simultaneously giving you a fright and almost knocking you out
- She yawns and scratches the top of her headÂ
- âwhat are you doing here?âÂ
- She sounds both tired and annoyed and you blink at her a few times before answeringÂ
- âer - i - the project. for english.âÂ
- It takes her a few seconds to process what youâve saidÂ
- But when she doesÂ
- She looks even more miserable than she did five seconds ago
- And you brace yourself for a long weekendÂ
- She sighs and rolls her eyesÂ
- Before slowly opening the door properly and letting you in
- You feel slightly nervous as you walk inÂ
- But you really have no idea why
- Itâs not like sheâs a complete strangerÂ
- But then againÂ
- Sheâs not exactly a friendÂ
- âdonât worry, iâve hidden the drugs. i donât really like to share anyway.âÂ
-Â âwhat?â you ask confused and she rolls her eyes againÂ
- She huffs and crosses her arms before nodding to the slightly messy living room
- âi get it. weâre a bunch of benefit fraud chavs that do nothing but drink and smoke all day.âÂ
- âthatâs not what i was thinkin-âÂ
- âsure it wasnât.â she rolls her eyes and you stare down at the floor. âi need to get changed so make yourself at home I suppose.âÂ
- She walks into what you assume is her bedroom and slams the door behind herÂ
- Leaving you to stand awkwardly in the middle of the living room
- Itâs small and slightly crampedÂ
- And most people would say that all the stuff makes it look busyÂ
- But to youÂ
- Itâs wonderfulÂ
- Itâs filled with stories and memoriesÂ
- Some self explanatoryÂ
- Some slightly more bizarreÂ
- Like the wonky blue and yellow clay swan living on the coffee tableÂ
- You really want to know the story behind itÂ
- But decide it might be a little early in your partnership to start asking about her attachment to a half swan, half moth looking ornament
- So instead you pick up a pile of books on the dining table and move them onto the floorÂ
- You can hear Maeve opening and closing drawers while humming a familiar tuneÂ
- And you feel yourself relax slightly as you place your laptop and books where the books were previously satÂ
- Even if it does feel like youâre using all of your braincells to try and figure out where youâve heard it beforeÂ
- âwow, do you actually trust me around that?âÂ
-Â âwhat?â you stop humming and look up at herÂ
- She looks between you and the laptop, staring at you expectantlyÂ
-Â âoh no. i mean of course i do.â you blush and she shakes her head before sitting opposite youÂ
- âso what do we know about women in fiction?âÂ
- âhistorically they are written as either a femme fatalle type or some sort of innocent angelic being.âÂ
- âthey still areâÂ
-Â âtrueâ you agree and flick through your textbook
- âwhy donât we write about that then?âÂ
- âwhat? how weâre still depressingly far back in the equality movement, despite being told otherwise?âÂ
- She stares at you for a few secondsÂ
- A mixture of shock and surpriseÂ
- Before noddingÂ
- And smilingÂ
- An actual genuine smileÂ
- You didnât even know she could do thatÂ
- Well you didÂ
- Of course you didÂ
- But you just havenât seen it a lotÂ
- Usually when you see MaeveÂ
- Sheâs either mad, grumpy or very, very, very angry
- But her smilingÂ
- Puts a smile on your faceÂ
- And this was definitely not where you thought this was goingÂ
- âyeah...thatâÂ
- âokay.â you shrug. âyou can do classic literature because i know you prefer them and iâll cover modern works.â
- âhow do you know i prefer classics?âÂ
- âthe pile of booksâ you nod towards the floor and she follows your gaze, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. âtheyâre all ripped and folded. you either love them or really, really hate themâÂ
-Â âokayâ she eyes you suspiciously as you focus on your laptopÂ
- And you can feel your cheeks heat up under her gazeÂ
- However as quickly as they were thereÂ
- They disappearÂ
- And the two of you fall into a surprisingly comfortable silence.Â
- After about half an hourÂ
- Maeve stops what sheâs doing to stretchÂ
- âis it okay if i play some music?âÂ
- âsure, itâs your place. do what you want...as long as its not awfulâÂ
-Â âand what constitutes as awful?â she asks, a smirk playing on her lips
- âwellâÂ
- And with that one questionÂ
- Your entire day disappears in front of youÂ
- Laptops and books are closed and long forgottenÂ
- And instead you talk about music and moviesÂ
- Books and playsÂ
- Characters that you love and hateÂ
- And the fact that her favourite character is the one you hate the mostÂ
- She makes you lunch while you debate between movies and books and which adaptations are good
- And which ones should never have been made
- And you clean up and apologise profusely after a stray cushion (possibly thrown by you) ends up knocking the pan overÂ
- SurprisinglyÂ
- She finds it quite funnyÂ
- And you let out a relieved sigh
- Soon the sun goes down on another dayÂ
- And youâve barely written two paragraphs done between you
-Â âdo you want to stay?â she asks while your putting your jacket on
- If sheâd asked you that this morningÂ
- You would have thought she had lost itÂ
- But now it feels almost inevitableÂ
- And you feel genuinely lucky to be askedÂ
- Not many people get to know MaeveÂ
- The real herÂ
- And that last person she told all of this to broke her heartÂ
- Very publiclyÂ
- And she told herself she would never let herself be that vulnerable with someone ever again
- But this just feels rightÂ
- For some reason you feel rightÂ
- She feels safe with youÂ
- And part of her hates herself for itÂ
- But then againÂ
- She hates herself for not getting to know you sooner
- She feels far too attached to youÂ
- And itâs barely been twelve hoursÂ
- You of course agree to stayÂ
- Shocking yourself and herÂ
- And while she sorts to sofa outÂ
- You excuse yourself to the bathroomÂ
- Under the pretences of telling your parents where you areÂ
- It takes two seconds to text themÂ
- And the other 28 to ask yourselfÂ
- What the fuck are you doing?Â
- Why are you agreeing to this?Â
- Why do you feel like this?Â
- What are you feeling?
- Who knows?
- Not youÂ
- GreatÂ
- Now youâve been in the bathroom for a suspicious amount of timeÂ
- Just get it together, Y/n
- Itâs just a study sleepoverÂ
- Maeve gives you a questioning look as you leaveÂ
- âyou know how mums are. always worrying about where you are and what youâre doingâÂ
-Â âi wouldnât actuallyâ she shrugs and your eyes widenÂ
-Â âoh shit, sorry. iâm so sorry. god, iâm an idiot.â
- âitâs fineâ she forces a laugh and you wince. âi got you an extra duvet and little women is ready to watch so i can show you that the book is betterâÂ
- âthatâs not what i said and you know itâÂ
- âiâm sorry. i canât hear you over the sound of me being 100% right and you being 100% wrong.âÂ
- âyou may be good at english, but you suck at mathsâÂ
- The next day you wake up to the sun shining through the curtainsÂ
- And a clump of Maeveâs hair in your mouthÂ
- You splutter and cough and wake her up quicklyÂ
- And she jumps away from you and smacks her head of the tableÂ
- The two of you ended up moving the blankets to the floor while watching Pride and PrejudiceÂ
- And neither of you bothered to move backÂ
- Maeve yawns and scratches her head
- Exposing a small part of her stomach and you feel yourself become a little breathlessÂ
- âare you okay?âÂ
-Â âye-yeahâ you nod and she eyes you suspiciouslyÂ
-Â âwhateverâ she shrugs and starts making breakfastÂ
- You watch as she pours to bowls of cereal
- Giving you the last of the milkÂ
- And for a second youâre a little worried as to how she knew you liked itÂ
- But then you remember that she also likes it and you had a whole discussion about the best and worst types of cereal at 2amÂ
- And half way through breakfastÂ
- You remember the original reason youâre hereÂ
- And both of you curse loudlyÂ
- Before rushing to finish eatingÂ
-You get half way through your projectÂ
- When Maeve asks if you want to go out for a bitÂ
- And wellÂ
- She doesnât need to ask you twiceÂ
- And by the time you come backÂ
- The feeling you had last night returnsÂ
- And has settled in your stomachÂ
- For the foreseeable future it seemsÂ
- It makes you feel both light and heavy at the same timeÂ
- And when you look at herÂ
- You feel dizzyÂ
- So you rush to finish the projectÂ
- So you can go home and pretend nothing has changedÂ
- And yeahÂ
- With the need to leaveÂ
- You get the rest of the assignment done fairly quicklyÂ
- But you end up leaving feeling more confused about Maeve as you did when you started thisÂ
- Maybe Miss Sands was right about a weekend projectÂ
- Any longer and you would have gone insane trying to figure out whatever the hell this isÂ
- You just have to get through tomorrow and then youâll be okayÂ
- Everything will go back to normalÂ
- You and Maeve can go back to being neutral to each other
- And you wonât have to deal with all of these confusing feelings that have decided to make an appearance for some reasonÂ
- Wellll
- Turns out Miss Sands was wrongÂ
- A weekend is not enough timeÂ
- And the first few presentations are awfulÂ
- To put it nicelyÂ
- So you spend the next week in a permanent confused stateÂ
- Confused as to why you start looking for Maeve whenever you enter a room
- Confused as to why your heart skips a beat whenever you hear her laughÂ
- Confused as to why you never want her stop talking in classÂ
- Even if the bell has rung and itâs lunchÂ
- Confused to why you keep looking for excuses to go over to see herÂ
- Despite your assignment being long doneÂ
- And even more confused as to why you feel anxious when youâre waiting for her to answer the door
- The next Monday rolls around both painfully slowly and far too quicklyÂ
- And while you wait for Ola and Danny to finish their presentationÂ
- Your hands shake with anxiety while your grip your papersÂ
- Maeve reaches over the table and gives them a reassuring squeezeÂ
- But it just makes them shake more and she slowly pulls backÂ
- Your turn canât come quick enoughÂ
- But then itâs over far too quicklyÂ
- And you slump back down in your seat disappointedÂ
- Despite Miss Sandsâ praiseÂ
- Because itâs overÂ
- You no longer have an excuse to hang out with herÂ
- You never talked beforeÂ
- So why do you care about afterÂ
- But thereâs so much about her that you want to know
- Like the weird swan/moth hybridÂ
- And the ugly plate that sits on top of the bookshelfÂ
- You want to be part of these storiesÂ
- You want to be able to point to these things and say
- âyeah, i know exactly why that is special to youâÂ
- You want to be the reason to add to this random collection of stuffÂ
- You want her to smile when she looks at them because theyâll remind her of youÂ
- You want her to smile when she looks at youÂ
-Â ây/n? are you okay?â she asks making you jumpÂ
- The classroom is now empty and you didnât even notice the bell goÂ
-Â âye-yeahâ you nod and grab your bag
-Â âare you sure?â she grabs your arm forcing you turn aroundÂ
- âwhats the weird swan thing on your coffee table?â you ask and she furrows her eyebrows at you. âitâs just i saw it when i first came over and i really want to know the story behind itâÂ
-Â âoh. aimee went through a pottery phase last year and that was the only thing she made that didnât have a hole in it.â
- âand the plate?âÂ
- âbirthday present from my neighboursâÂ
- âthey got you a plate?âÂ
- âyeah, they donât have any kidsâÂ
- âclearlyâÂ
- Silence fills the room and you stare at the peeling posters behind her headÂ
- You can feel Maeve move closer to you and your breath hitches when she stops a few centimetres in front of youÂ
- She grabs your hand and squeezes it againÂ
- And your heartbeat increasesÂ
- ây/n?âÂ
- âyeah?âÂ
-Â âiâm really, really confused right now. like more confused that i have ever been in my life. but what i do know, is that if i watch you walk out of that door without saying anything first, then iâd regret it for the rest of my life. iâve only ever felt like this about boys before, but now i feel this and more about you and i have no idea where itâs come from or what i need to do, but i do know i need to tell you. because otherwise, it wouldnât be fair for either of usâ she whispers and you stare at her wide eyedÂ
- âcan i kiss you?â she asks and you nod your head quicklyÂ
- Slowly she leans in
- Her eye flutter closed and you followÂ
- Your lips brush over hersÂ
- Her hands wrap around you waist to pull you close
- And then your lips connectÂ
- And you feel everything changeÂ
- She kisses you slowlyÂ
- And when you pull away you both feel breathlessÂ
- Her cheeks are bright redÂ
- And thereâs a shy smile playing on her lips as she looks at you bashfully
- And all of a sudden you feel really grateful for Miss Sands and her personal issuesÂ
- Although you really hope they are resolved nowÂ
- For your sake as well as hers
support my writing! if you want!Â

Romeo x Juliet
Sooo. Sometime during my middle school years, I was on the AMV side of YouTube. I stumbled across an AMV of the anime, Romeo x Juliet, to the background song:Â âRomeo and Juliet.â Out of curiosity, I searched up the anime, and I found it on YouTube. I think I watched the final scenes of the last episode first, without any context. I guess I was interested enough to start from the beginning.Â
And I became obsessed. By obsessed, I mean, seriously, seriously, obsessed. I fell in love with everything -- the main characters, the music, the world. The romance was touching, the story was impacting, and it was just perfect. I cried sooo hard. It became one of those things that touched me so much to the point I thought about it for weeks and weeks. I searched up AMVâs and fanart and scoured the Wikipedia page over and over, so eager to have more.Â
I even tried to burn the entire series on DVD because I wanted to watch it whenever I wanted (so I had to learn how to burn a DVD, though I donât think I ever actually succeeded). Eventually, though, by some luck, I found the DVD at Best Buy, and my dad bought it for me.Â
I shared it with my friends. I sent them all home to watch it, and I felt overjoyed when they came back to school the next day saying they binged it and cried and loved it. We became something of a fan club. Lol.Â
Then time went on and I thought of it less and less, though I was always fond of the memory of watching it. I remembered it as a sad, beautiful anime that I loved so much. Actually, it impacted me so much that Iâm borrowing some elements of the story for my own works. To this day, I reference the show when Iâm wondering about the design of my own fantasy universes.Â
These days, Iâm slowly molding my Sol Verynda universe. Iâve been doing that for about four years now. I keep changing things or developing them further. Sometimes, I run out of inspiration. Iâm still dragging details out of the world where I can find them. Sometimes you just need a giant push.Â
I donât remember the reason, but sometime during this past week or the last, Romeo x Juliet popped into my mind. I think I was just reminiscing the story. And then I decided to just watch it. You know. For the heck of it.Â
So for the first time in a very, very long time, I watched the series.Â
Iâm a lot older now and more mature than I was in middle school, which means thereâs a lot more that I can understand now. That means Iâm also a lot more cynical now. And critical. And the devilâs always on my shoulder. Plus this raging depression that just wonât go away is in my mind. So I re-watched the anime through a different lens.Â
Still me, but a different version.Â
I watched the series over the course of a few days (busy with school and work). I decided to watch it in Dub because thatâs the original way I watched it, and I wanted to recapture that feeling I got when I watched before. Even though my sister gave me such a hard time about it. Like, seriously. She came into my room and slapped my phone out of my hands because she was so disgusted. I retaliated.Â
I like the Dub also because the script is so lovely in English. They incorporate some Shakespearian speak (I learned later that itâs really called iambic pentameter). So the characters sometimes speak like itâs the 14th or something century, and itâs pleasant to hear. I also just really like hearing them speak poetically in an American accent.Â
Buuuut, I caved out of curiosity. I searched the Subbed version on YouTube and watched a few minutes of the first episode, just to see the difference. And, well. I get it. The show was made specifically for Japanese, and so that version is actually very fitting. Buuut, I still continued on with the dub. Iâm thinking now, though, that Iâm going to rewatch the show in the Subbed version sometime soon. Itâll be like seeing the story again, but with a different feel. So, yeah.Â
Anywayyyy, so the story. The show takes liberties with the adaptation. Iâve never read the original play, but we all know how it goes. And I think I watched Romeo + Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio, so I had an idea. In the original, Romeo belongs to the Montague family and Juliet belongs to the Capulets. Their families hate each other, but they fall in love anyway. After a string of events, Romeo and Juliet die together, and the family conflict is resolved by this tragedy.Â
In the anime, Romeoâs father, Leontes Montague, murders every member of the Capulet family so he can take over the city, Neo Verona, as ruler. Only Juliet, who was rescued by her familyâs loyalists, escapes. Sheâs two years old. Fourteen years later, Montague is the tyrannical king of the city, and Juliet is forced into hiding. She disguises herself as a boy, named Odin, though she was never told the reason why she had to do so.Â
Montague is on the hunt to find her. In his tyranny, he allows his guards to torment the citizens. And so Juliet, disguised as a man, takes on the persona of the Red Whirlwind to defend the people.Â
Eventually, Juliet winds up at the palace, dressed as a girl, for the Rose Ball. And she and Romeo meet. And itâs a love at first sight moment.Â
Later, Juliet finally learns of her heritage, and her world becomes chaotic.Â
One thing I didnât realize when I was younger was just how much of a sweetheart Romeo is. He lived a rough life in the palace. His father was emotionally and physically abusive. His mother left him to join a convent (though she deeply regretted leaving him). He was alone at the palace except for his best friend, Benvolio, and his Dragon Steed (basically, flying pegasus), Cielo. Despite that, he had a big heart. He was nothing like his father. He genuinely was a good person.Â
And Juliet just deserved so much better. The girl could never catch a break. She and Romeo had similar temperaments. She was really sweet and considerate with a good, forgiving heart. But she was also this badass swordsman secret vigilante who was a fearless leader and fought for justice. We see her character develop over the course of the series. She slowly matures after all her mistakes. And in the end sheâs the one to save the world.Â
The love shared between these two is really the driving force of the story. Itâs the reason the two fought so hard to create a world of love instead of hatred. Instead of revenge, Julietâs focus was on freedom and happiness. Without Romeo, she might have actually killed Montague and gone with the route of hatred.Â
The series did get a little cheesy and naive sometimes, I felt while watching. Thatâs the cynical adult in me. However, the show doesnât hesitate to admit that. For example, when Romeoâs trying to motivate a group of exiles to cultivate a dead land, his words do seem childish and idealistic. And several inmates point that out. But they do eventually try.Â
I donât know. To me, itâs a reminder that the idealism of children is so powerful. Adults donât have that same spirit. A lot of us are always worried about the bad outcomes of things. Weâre always tired. Weâre so used to seeing bad things that we become cynical. But kids arenât so used to it yet, so they still have these grand hopes.Â
It can be a disadvantage, of course, such as when Juliet jumped into an opportunity out of her naivety, just to see her loyalists fall.Â
But, still. We get characters like William (a caricature of Shakespeare himself), who is so childish and idealistic and perpetually inspired.Â
When I was in middle school, I hadnât yet experienced a real relationship. So it was fun to imagine what it would be like. Watching Romeo and Julietâs relationship blossom gave me such a warm, fluttery feeling. You know. I wanted a romance like that.Â
Re-watching it, post-heartbreak from my FL and other âromanticâ endeavors, I view love a lot differently now. Honestly, I havenât felt fondly about it for a long time. Iâve come to a point where I almost detest it. I detest boys and the hurt they can cause me. Itâs hard to imagine myself in a good, loving, idealistic relationship again after all the guys Iâve encountered.Â
Well. My heart is still too broken for a new love, but I still felt my heartstrings pulled by the anime. Maybe itâs too soon to tell, but I think my opinion has shifted a bit. I forgot, really, how amazing romantic love can be. How consuming. Even when Iâm not a part of it, just seeing it unfold is so precious. It makes me feel all warm and happy inside. And inspired to write.Â
Anyway.Â
One other thing that Iâm really noticing now that I just didnât before is the symbolism. That scene where Romeo asked Juliet (without knowing she was present) what flower she would prefer for a garden, she answered with a ârose.â I remember feeling confused. The entire series, the white iris was the symbol of their relationship. But why would she answer a rose?
Well. The iris is on the Capulet family crest, and the rose is on the Montague family crest. Juliet was saying she wanted him.Â
Also, Leontes Montague entered the family by becoming a ward, and then poisoning his way to the top. Also, his father is a Capulet, meaning Romeo and Juliet are distant cousins. Oof.Â
Also, I know more about art and architecture now thanks to Art History courses. So seeing all the reliefs and structures in the series was astounding. Seriously. Astounding. Thereâs this constant image of a goddess with angelâs wings in prayer. It appears in statues, reliefs, statuettes, paintings, etc. There was a goddess statue at the fountain where Romeo and Juliet first met.Â
In the end, we learned this goddess is a symbol of Escalus, the grand tree that serves as a life force to the continent.Â
If anything, I really really really wish there was a prequel or something that went into the history of the Capulet family and the tree of Escalus. There were so many unanswered questions. Like, why was Neo Verona floating over the sky the whole time? How? Why did Escalus keep it afloat? Why did the Capulet family have to be the one to make sacrifices? Why the girls? Who was Ophelia, really? Whatâs the history? When they fell from the sky, did they just rejoin the larger world? They mention Christian and Greek mythos, so how do they know about it? They say Escalus is the patron goddess of Neo Verona, so are there others?Â
Sadly, we might never find out. But itâs all still very interesting.Â
Neo Verona is a living, breathing world. Itâs a fantasy world that we fall in love with.Â
All the side characters make us care for saving the world, and Juliet mentions this, too. She decides her sacrifice would be worth it if it meant her loved ones would get to live. And we agree, too, because we come to love all the minor characters. Every single one. Even though we donât want her to die.Â
Watching it this time around, I also started to understand Montague, and admire him as a villain. Heâs layered. Heâs vicious. Heâs ruthless. Heâs a little insane. He was never loved (he says this in his final moments). His mother died when he was young. He told Romeo he deeply cared for him, which I kind of believe. In a twisted way, I believe he did love him. I believe he also loved Romeoâs mother, Portia. When he visited her, he started by saying she could have lived in luxury with him if she didnât leave.Â
Montague also seemed to genuinely care for Escalus. For some reason. Maybe he didnât want to the world to end with him in it. He seemed to be searching for a genuine solution to the problem.Â
Anytime Montague was on screen, he was riveting. Truly terrifying. Charming with some, like Hermoine and other lady nobility. But murderous. And a swordsman. Underneath it all, all his heinous acts, he just wanted love. In the end, he died in Julietâs arms.Â
The mythos of the world was incredible as well. Iâm a sucker for fantasy, and the show really runs with all my favorite things. Prophecy. Ancient things. Sacrifice. Enhanced nature.Â
I havenât watched anime in a long time. Honestly, I sort of shunned it from my mind when âAsian thingsâ became more and more shameful. Well, that thinking is shameful. Because anime is truly beautiful. It captures humans in a different way. Anime knows how to do romance. It knows how to build tension and longing, it knows how to invest the audience. Every anime I ever watched has hooked me to the romance (something American TV canât ever do with me).Â
I just love the tone of anime. The wittiness, the playful scenes, the heavy moods, the characters and their attitudes. Itâs all entirely distinct. I donât know why, but it really gets you wanting. Plus the expressiveness of 2D animation that can do absolute wonders.Â
Iâm a really big fan of Game of Thrones, donât get me wrong, and maybe the show just butchered the story, but for a while I just wanted to make a story similar in spirit to Thrones. You know. The realism. The darkness. The unfairness.Â
But I forgot that you can make your own worlds with fiction. And your own rules. Life is life. Itâll always be unfair and tragically beautiful, and there are lovely stories to capture that. But then there are those stories that are an abstraction of reality, like Romeo x Juliet. Not totally realistic, but spellbinding. Youâre thrown into this world, and you just want to be a part of it. For a while, you can escape the real world and join this one.Â
It gets one inspired about living in a different world.Â
So while realism is great, fiction and world-building are just so much more fun. And impactful. And creative. And magical. And fan-service isnât a bad thing.Â
I cried during the final episode, once right after Romeo died, and again during the Epilogue. Everyone who lived got a happy ending, and I was so sad and happy seeing them all enjoying life. After all the darkness that they went through, they all ended up living in the bright, joyous world that Romeo and Juliet dreamed of.Â
Thatâs fucking inspiring. To the max. A little cheesy, but in a way that feels so earned and so right.Â
So anyway, Iâm glad I decided to rewatch it. I was in my early teens when I last watched it, and now Iâm 21. Oh, and the decade is ending. Seems fitting. Maybe itâll help me set the tone for the next decade, which I hope will be one of creativity. And maybe some romance. Maybe. Maybe itâll have that attitude.Â
Itâs still one of my favorite stories of all time, and Iâm definitely going to rewatch it again in the future. Next time will probably be soon. I have to spend some time recovering from the emotional roller coaster that I went through. Maybe next month. Iâll watch it in Sub, the way it was meant to be, I guess. And Iâll see the difference. And Iâll probably write another post about how I felt about it.Â
Until the next time.Â

hey! how is everyone? i hope youâre all well and good! i may have slightly cheated a bit and copy and pasted a previously written out bit from another request where theyâre playing secrets and sins. but thatâs only because i didnât see the point in writing the same dialogue again. anywayyyy enjoy!Â
It seems that whenever Cheryl Blossom arrives at a party, the party atmosphere disappears. Maybe itâs her grating personality or overbearing need to be liked, whatever it is, within ten minutes of her and Chuck gate crashing Jugheadâs unwanted birthday party, thereâs already tension.Â
Which is not made any better by the suggestion of secrets & sins. Your friends are gathered in a circle in the living room, while you sit off to the side. You want to eavesdrop, but you donât want to reveal your deepest, darkest secrets, not to your best friends and definitely not to Cheryl.Â
Itâs clear everyone thatâs been roped into this stupid game doesnât want to be there. Betty shifts in her seat uncomfortably and stares at you with pleading eyes. You shoot her an unsure smile back before taking a sip of your drink and she drops your gaze, glancing at Archie before staring down at the floor.Â
Cheryl is the only one that looks like sheâs enjoying herself, but youâre not surprised. Chaos and the chance to get dirt on everyone so she can control them even more than she already does is what Cheryl lives for.
You glare at the red-head, whoâs smiling brightly as she looks around at her victims and when her eyes land on you, her eyes narrow and the smile is replaced by a smirk.Â
âWhatâs wrong Y/n? Did nobody pick you to be on their team?â She asks, her bright red lips forming a perfect pout and you canât help but stare at them for a few seconds longer than you should. You feel your face heat up and look away, blaming the alcohol for the affects youâre feeling and refusing to believe that youâve just thought of Cheryl Blossom as attractive.Â
A shiver runs up your spine at the thought and you lips pull into a pout as you stare down at the now empty cup in your hands. You scratch at the plastic and listen to the mumbles and whispers of the teenagers stood and sat around you.Â
Whoever isnât partaking in Secrets and Sins, have gathered around to watch and judge, and you canât help but lean in a little closer, they may be some of your closest friends, but you canât help wanting to know what theyâve been hiding from one another...youâre only human and at least youâre not as bad as Cheryl.Â
Cheryl lives of rumours. Like Gretchen Wieners with smaller and redder hair.Â
âWhat the hell is Secrets and Sins?â Jughead asks, all eyes on Cheryl as she moves around in a circle, eyeing everyone suspiciously as she starts to explain the rules.Â
âIts a variation on Truth or DareâŚin which we own our truths by telling it like it is. Iâll start the game withâŚVeronica Lodge.â She smirks and you roll your eyes at her.Â
âNaturally.â Veronica sighs and you pat her shoulder.Â
âLetâs begin with the day you and your mob wife of a mother came to town for a so-called fresh start.â She says, her eyes filled with accusations and anger before sheâs even gotten to her question.Â
You really donât know why so many people like her, well you do, itâs because sheâs rich and she bullies people into being her friend because sheâs unable to make them any other way.Â
Sheâs snobby, spoilt and just plain mean, but that doesnât stop you from sometimes staring at her for longer than you want to and definitely should.Â
âTell us Veronica, whatâs so fresh about defiling Archie Andrews in a closet?â
âThat was your doing.â She replies confused, her arms crossed defensively against her chest.
âMoving on to dear Daddy LodgeâŚâ She interrupts, getting more and more angry by the second. âIsnât it true that your father, from prison, illegally purchased the drive-in land? Which makes me wonder, what else is he doing behind bars?â She continues and you glance to your side at Joaquin, who shares a very suspicious look with FP
âWell, I canât speak for my fatherâŚbut I can think of someone with a very dirty secret. Specifically, Cheryl killing her very own brother.â The tension in the room shifts and your eyes widen.Â
As much as you dislike Cheryl, you know how close her and Jason were and you knew how much it hurt and how sheâs still hurting now because of his death. Youâve seen her crying underneath the bleachers after school, you see how her eyes are a little more dull than they used to be. They donât sparkle as much when she talks and when sheâs not spreading hate, sheâs just not saying anything at all.Â
She smiles less when with her friends, and sometimes you think the only reason sheâs horrible to people is so she can feel something. But that doesnât excuse it and so you shake your head and earn a few confused looks as you try to stop yourself from defending Cheryl Majorie Blossom.Â
âEveryone knows how much I loved my brother.â Cheryl defends herself.
âExactly.â Veronica replies. âBut did you love him, maybe in ways that a sister shouldnât love a brother?â She continues and you watch as Cheryl becomes more and more upset. âAnd as you got older, Jason started to think it was strange, unnatural. So he chose Polly over you. So you shot him between the eyes with one of your fatherâs many hunting rifles.â
Her shoulders slump a little and her bottom lip quivers as she looks around the room helplessly. The confident look she usually has, has slipped off like a mask, revealing a very sad girl underneath and suddenly you find yourself standing up.Â
âThatâs enough Veronica.â You say, surprising everyone, including Cheryl. âJust leave her alone, itâs not worth it.â You add quietly and slowly sit back down again.Â
Veronica hold her hands up in defence and you force a smile before going back to picking at the plastic of your cup.Â
âI donât need you to defend me.â Cheryl seethes, her eyes full of hatred as she looks at you, and for some reason it stings. Youâre used to her not liking you, but her hating you, hurts you for some unknown reason and you have to take a few deep breaths in order to stop the ache in your chest.Â
âThis game is sick.â Dilton adds and Cheryl uses the distraction to wipe away the tears on her cheek. âI wanna go next.â He adds making everyone look at him.
âThats the spirit, Doiley. What secrets do you have to reveal to us?â Chuck grins.Â
âI saw Ms. Grundyâs car by Sweetwater River the day Jason went missing.â He says and everyone gasps. People mumble and whisper around you and Cheryl stares straight at Dilton, her eyes narrow. âI told Betty and Jughead, and then Ms. Grundy quit her job and left Riverdale, like, two days later. And letâs not forget that Archie was also at Sweetwater River that morning.â
âOh, my God.â Cheryl whips her head round to look at Archie. âColour me shocked. Archie Andrews, is that why you became a mediocre musician overnight? Because you and Ms. Four-Eyes were pulling a Mary Kay Letourneau?â
âDonât say anything. Donât get in the gutter with them.â Veronica mutters while glaring at Cheryl.Â
âWait, what? Andrews was banging a teacher?â Chuck asks, his tone a mix of surprise and impressed and you roll your eyes at him. âI wish I wouldâve known. I would have added you and Ms. Grundy to the book of conquests.â
âClassy, Chuck, as always.â
âWait a second.â Cheryl interrupts. âThat also explains why Archie canât seem to keep a girlfriend to save his life. Heâs got serious mommy issues. Anything to say for yourself Arch? Were you a victim or a perpetrator?â
âDilton Doiley plays with guns.â Betty tries to change the subject but sheâs immediately shut down.
âBig whoop, Betty. So Doileyâs a psychopath. Everyone knows that.â Â
âWell, I guess itâs my turn now. Boy, do I have a twisted secret to reveal, starring Betty Cooper.â
âLeave her the hell alone, Chuck.â Archie threatens.
âShut up, Andrews.â He replies. âLook, you may get a free peep show every night, but you do not know her. Hell, Betty doesnât even know herself. Everybody knows why I got suspended, but what you donât know...she dressed up like a hooker, in a God-awful black wig, drugged me, handcuffed me in the Jacuzzi, and well, I almost drowned until she got me to say what she wanted to hear. And then she really lost it. She actually thought she was Polly. But, hey, you knew all about this right, Jughead?â He asks. For a second, the question hangs in the air, everyone trying to figure out what to say next and how to process what theyâve just been told.Â
But then Jughead leaps forward at punches Chuck in face causing all hell to break loose. Everyone stands and FP shoves races forward to grab Chuck and throw him outside.Â
While everyone else follows them outside, eagerly awaiting a fight, you stay back and watch as Cheryl disappears upstairs, quietly sniffling as she goes. You look at the front door and then at the stairs and sigh, knowing that this is not gonna end well. Sheâs gonna insult you and tell you to leave her alone, but at least you can say you tried to help and then you wonât feel bad.Â
So you glance at the door one more time and pray that at least one person is filming whatever is happening out there, before wandering up the stairs in search for Cheryl.Â
The slight scent of maple syrup and the sound of faint cries coming from the bathroom lets you know where sheâs hiding and you quietly creep along the slightly creaky floorboards, trying to remember which ones to avoid after years of practice when sneaking into Archieâs room in order to break him out.Â
You stop outside of the bathroom, light coming out of the cracks of the door and your hand hovers over the handle.Â
âWhoever is out there, go away.â She sniffles and you roll your eyes.Â
Turning on your heel, you start to walk away, but then you hear her sob and it makes you freeze.Â
You let out a quiet groan and curse the side of you that canât leave people that are crying alone, before making your way back to the bathroom and slowly opening the door.Â
The first thing you see as you duck your hear around the door is Cheryl sat on the side of the bath. Her hands gripping the edges so hard that her knuckles have turned white. He hair has fallen in front of her face and you watch as she her shoulder shake and tears drip onto the bath mat.Â
âCheryl?â You whisper and she looks up, her eyes wide as she quickly scrambles to wipe away the tears that have ruined her makeup. âAre you okay?â You ask and walk into the room. You close the door behind you and lean against it and her expression hardens.Â
âIâm having the best time.â She deadpans and you resist the urge to roll your eyes. God is she stubborn.Â
âLook, I know weâre not exactly best friends. Most of the time, I donât really like to be around you-âÂ
âIs this supposed to be making me feel better?â She asks and you shrug.Â
âBut you know that if you need someone to talk to that wonât judge you or really know anything about you, you can. Iâll just sit and listen and you can cry or rant or I dunno. Just, know youâre not alone. You may not get along with everyone in this town, but we will all be here for you if you need us, all you have to do is ask.â You say honestly but anxiously while playing with your fingers.Â
She looks at you surprised, her lips part as if sheâs going to say something and youâre sure sheâs going to tell you to shut up and leave her alone, but instead she says thank you and you feel yourself relax a little.Â
âItâs okay.â You nod. âAnd for the record, what Veronica said was out of line. Everyone knows how much Jason meant to you and for her to say that is just wrong. We all know you loved your brother...a normal amount.â You add the last bit quietly and she stares at you for a few seconds before a smile twitches at her lips. âWould you like me to leave you alone now?â You ask and she shakes her head. You look around the small bathroom, trying to figure out the best place to sit and she moves along a little so you can sit beside her. âWould you like me to sit with you until you feel better?â You ask and she nods slowly, her lip wobbling again.Â
You sit beside her, place a gentle hand over hers and the two of you fall into a slightly awkward but not as bad as you thought it would be, silence.Â
After ten minutes, Cheryl stands and makes her way over to the mirror. She swipes her fingers under her eyes to try and get rid of her ruined mascara before messing with her hair to try and get it back to looking like normal.Â
âDo I look okay?â She turns to you and stands with her arms by her side. Your breath hitches when you look at her and you wonder how she looks so pretty even in the most unflattering light that is Archie Andrewsâ bathroom.Â
You stand in front of her and slowly tuck a piece of hair behind her ear and you watch as she takes a shaky breath.Â
âCan I?â You ask, your fingers centimetres away from her cheek and she nods slowly, her eyes locked with yours and you feel yourself growing warm from the intensity. âThere.â You smile once youâve wiped a bit of mascara away from her cheek.Â
She grabs her bag and pulls her lipstick from it, but when she goes to apply it, her hands shake and you take it from her gently.Â
Your lips darts out between your tongue as you concentrate on keeping the lipstick in the lines, and you can feel her warm breath on your cheek.Â
âThere!â You smile proudly once your finished, but she grabs your arm before you can pull away properly as her lips connect with yours in an almost frantic kiss.
You gasp a little and then relax and kiss back just as frantically, but she pulls away after a few seconds and the two of you stare at each other wide-eyed and breathless.Â
âYour lipstickâs ruined.â You whisper and her lips curl into a smile.Â
âWorth it.â She replies before pulling you close to her and kissing you again.Â
