the shapes in the silence (6)
warnings: panic, violence, blood
Chapter 6
Virgil took a step forward without even meaning to, and then jerked to a stop as Roman skittered back like a frightened deer. He wilted slightly, but tried not to take it personally. He knew better than anyone how scary being suddenly small could be.Â
âPuff? Donât- Donât let them control you!â Romanâs sword faltered back and forth, face contorted with an odd mixture of anguish and fear.Â
Virgil narrowed his eyes, casting a glance at the Dragon Witch. Control him? As if. Roman was tiny, in danger, and afraid. There was virtually nothing that could stop him from doing his damn job, and absolutely nothing that would make him actually attack Roman.Â
Meters away, the Dragon Witch shifted impatiently. âI said, give the prince a taste of what dragons are really like, runt.â
Once again, the compulsion to move, to rend and tear, filled his mind for a heartbeat before being shunted away at the speed of light. Heâd have to be a jackass to make this work, but heâd already proved himself capable of that in the name of protecting his people.Â
A beat late, he started forward again, his gait now distinctly menacing. He thought of what could have happened if the Dragon Witch had used this spell on Roman when he was alone, and a low growl started up in his throat. Romanâs face crumpled as he started taking careful steps back, sword raised in a barely-steady hand.
âPuff, please. Donât make me fight you.â He pleaded, raising his other hand defensively. Virgil continued to move, matching the princeâs retreat step for step.Â
Until Roman stumbled over a stray branch, his sword dipping slightly for a moment, and Virgil lunged.Â
That sword wasnât all for show, of course, and Roman lashed it at him as he knocked the small side over, but with all the adrenaline flooding his system he had no idea whether the blow had landed. Didnât really matter. He ducked his head down, and carefully latched his teeth onto the back of that cheesy outfit, lifting him up like a scruffed kitten with ease.Â
The moment he was sure Roman was secure in his grip, he bolted, sprinting away for all he was worth. Behind them, a startled and then enraged shriek came from the Dragon Witch, but if there was one thing he knew, it was how to hide.Â
He ducked between the long shadows cast by the late afternoon sun, mind set on finding a secure place to hide and nothing else. It could have been minutes or hours before he found the small cave carved into the wall of a cliff face, but all that really mattered was that he had found it.Â
Clawing up the small jump to get into it, he made sure it was deep enough to hide them from view before finally releasing the death grip he had on Roman. He immediately switched gears to sniff at him instead, searching out any possible injuries.
The tiny side shoved him back, eyes a little wild with panic, and Virgil retreated. Right. Heâd forgotten that heâd been fake-threatening Roman before.Â
âPuff?â He asked, searching his eyes intently.
Virgil scooted back to give him some space, before carefully lowering his head to settle onto the floor, trying to be as non threatening as possible. It made him feel uncomfortably vulnerable, but he probably deserved any retaliation after the scare heâd given Roman, and he probably wouldnât kill him, right?Â
Before he could get himself worked up about the possibility, Roman sat down, letting out a deep breath. âYouâre⊠still you, right? For realsies?âÂ
Virgil huffed impatiently at his hesitance, and more of the tension leaked from Romanâs frame.Â
âOkay⊠okay. I believe you. Are you alright?âÂ
Virgil blinked. Was he? He stood up, turning in a circle to inspect himself, and then froze at Romanâs gasp. What, did he move too fast and scare him again?
âPuff, your side!â A delicate touch pressed against his left ribcage, and his ears flattened at the sudden sting.Â
Huh. Guess the sword had gotten him after all.Â
He laid back down, feeling too crowded in the small enclave otherwise, and rumbled at Roman reassuringly. It felt pretty shallow, it would be fine. Probably.
Roman looked at him with a stricken expression. âI⊠hurt you. You were only trying to protect me and I⊠I could have seriously injured you!âÂ
Virgil grumbled a disagreement. Roman was like half his size. He had scales and stuff, he was fine.
âDonât you try and say otherwise!â Roman demanded, despite the fact that Virgil wasnât really saying anything. He inhaled sharply, as though about to go on a self recriminatory tangent, and Virgil decided that no, heâd had enough of those.Â
Without another sound, he padded over and curled his non-injured side around Roman, finding that at this size, he could comfortably curl up into a ball with the creative side tucked against him. Roman spluttered at being interrupted, and Virgil draped a wing over him, teasingly muting his protest.
âFine, fine! But weâre going home, and getting you treated.âÂ
A loud crack echoed from outside, and they turned to see it had begun to storm while Roman was preoccupied by being a dunce.Â
âWhen⊠that clears up, I guess.â Roman frowned, drawing closer to Virgil seemingly without realizing. He chirped in agreement, and settled his head back down to wait. After the earlier panic, he was happy to be a shield between Roman and the rest of the world for as long as needed.Â
For a few minutes, there was only the sound of heavy rain and rolling thunder.
âThey can control dragons, yâknow.â Roman said, drawing Virgil out of his sleepiness. âThe Dragon Witch. Thatâs why I⊠when they ordered youâŠâ He trailed off.Â
Virgil remembered the compulsion magic, but it hadnât gripped all of him. It was almost reassuring; despite his appearance, he was still him, not a dragon. He turned his nose up dramatically for Romanâs sake, as if to dismiss the magic as insignificant. Roman chuckled softly.
âYouâre really something else, Puff. Sometimes I think youâre not even really a dragon.â
Virgil froze, despite having just thought the same thing. If Roman figured it out⊠He felt his stomach sink. It wasnât even really about the fact that he was a monster to be slayed anymore. There was something new he had with Roman, with all three of the Light Sides, and he desperately didnât want to lose it.Â
The moment of silence stretched on agonizingly, before Roman laughed again, a bit more genuine this time.Â
âItâs okay, Puff. Youâre special, you donât have to tell me why.â A pause, as Virgil tried to process that. âI⊠apologize for being unable to protect you. For making you protect me.â
Virgil couldnât tell him that if this were a fairytale, heâd be cast as the villain anyways, so there was no reason to apologize. He couldnât tell him that he was supposed to protect Roman, couldnât harangue him for being so insistent on taking everything on alone.
All he could do was curl himself tighter around Roman, and let himself purr loud enough to drown out the thunder.Â
When the sky finally cleared, Roman was drooling from his position sprawled out against Virgilâs side. He snorted. Prince Charming, to be sure. The guy was out cold.
He ever so carefully lifted the wing he had left laid over the side like a blanket, and then slapped it back down on him, jolting him awake.Â
âHwagh?!â Roman said, jerking upright.
Virgil smacked him again for good measure. Rise and shine, Sir Sings-A-Lot.Â
âAugh, stop your assault on my person, you fiend!â Roman rolled out from under his wing, sending him a petulant glare. He chirruped smugly, and proceeded to stretch obnoxiously as Roman moved to gather his belongings.Â
The sky outside was grey, but the only sign of the storm was the lingering petrichor. Roman looked at his hand, minuscule against the backdrop, and sighed.Â
âAt this size, it will take ages to return to our entry portal. Normally, I could shift it closer, but⊠this form seems to have more disadvantages than mere size reduction.âÂ
Virgil looked at Roman consideringly. It should be doable at this size, and there was a soft blanket of leaves and other forest mulch in case he fucked up, soâŠÂ
âWhat? What are you looking aaaAAAAAHHH PUFF NO!âÂ
Roman hollered in protest as Virgil pushed him forwards towards the opening of the cave, grabbing Romanâs shoulders and then launching them both out into the open air.Â
He almost lost at the beginning, the difference in weight making them plunge for a moment- and making Roman screech at an ear-splitting pitch- before he flapped hard, managing to regain his balance in the air.
There. Easy as pie.Â
It was a bit difficult for him to trace their path backwards from such a different perspective, but luckily after Roman had finished yelling, he begrudgingly helped guide Virgil back to their doorway.Â
He stumbled a bit on the landing, but managed to drop Roman only half an inch off the ground, so he counted it as a win. From there, they walked through to the familiar halls of their home in the Mindscape.Â
Roman craned his head back, trying to take in how large everything was. âI⊠have no idea where we are. Everything looks so different!â
It was a little funny, that Virgil was used to this perspective by now. Hell, sometimes he got a little disoriented waking up big.Â
âWait.â Roman seemed to realize something. âWhy hasnât the spell worn off yet? Enchantments are usually limited to the realm theyâre cast in.âÂ
That sounded like a problem Virgil had no idea how to solve. Good thing he had other people to depend on in this form! He grabbed Romanâs sash, lifting him up yet again, and began trotting down the hall towards the lounge.Â
âHey! Puff? Where are we going?â Roman called, nervously.Â
Virgil purred lightly to reassure him, and then began carefully making his way down the stairs. Luckily, the others were already in the lounge area, Logan undoubtedly lured out by the smell of whatever pastry Patton had been baking. Â
âPuff, wait- I donât want them to see- !â
âDid you say something, Lo?âÂ
Roman went silent and still, and Virgil realized that he was probably hearing their voices from this size for the first time. He slowed, still mostly hidden by the bannister of the stairs, and set the creative side down, watching as he leaned against a stair for support, breathing hard. He motioned towards the others with his head, flicking his ears back and forth. Theyâll help.Â
âThey⊠they shouldnât see me like this. We should go back, Iâm certain it will wear off eventually.â Roman said, voice layered with false confidence.Â
Virgil stared at him, unimpressed, and Roman opened his mouth again before abruptly paling.Â
âPuff? Kiddo, that you?âÂ
Virgil twisted around, seeing that Patton was now standing at the foot of the stairs, only a couple of feet away. He evidently hadnât been as well hidden as heâd thought. Whoops.Â
He shifted slightly, flaring his wings a bit to hide Romanâs crouched form from view, and then chirruped a greeting. Patton smiled.Â
âHey, little guy! What are you doing all the way over here? I made some cinnamon rolls for my son-namon rolls!âÂ
âNot your best.â Logan called out from his chair.Â
âBut you still ate them!â Patton responded cheerily, ignoring Loganâs displeased silence.Â
Virgil shifted uneasily, but before he could really formulate a plan of action, he felt a tiny form duck under his wing. Pattonâs eyes went wide as saucers, and Virgil looked down at Roman with his own surprise, resisting the urge to shift his wing and re-conceal him. Â
The three-inch figure was standing up, stiff-backed, right in front of Patton. He summoned up a strained smile, tilting his head back to meet Pattonâs gaze as though nothing was wrong.Â
âHey, Padre.âÂ

#50 taakitz? Maybe with your favorite au!
Hey anon! Sorry, this took ages. This was a bit tricky, I figured that High School AUâs are my fave but the prompt didnât really fit, but I went with that anyway. I already wrote this (1688 words jeez I have no chill) and then I remembered that I really like fake dating AUâs⊠That one would have been easier. But, well, here you go. I made Taako some sort of sleep gremlin sorry for that. Also I have no idea how high schools work, please indulge me.
#50 âItâs not safe here.â
Something raps against the window and Kravitz jolts awake, a music sheet sticking to his face. He has fallen asleep at his desk again. Sitting up, he rubs at his tired eyes, half-wondering what woke him up. Something hits his window again, a small stone it sounds like.
Not really thinking about it he stands up, walks up to his window and opens it. He peers into the darkness below, and spots something humanoid-shaped crouching down on the gravel, bending down to pick up more stones.
âHello?â Kravitz calls out unsurely, because heâs now awake enough to realize that he really isnât friends with anyone who would be out on the school premises after dark, throwing things at his window.
The shape below stands up and Kravitzâs heart stops for a second because the person looks like Taako and heâs been gathering courage to ask the elf out for ages.
âOh shit! Skellington?!â Lup laughs - because of course it had to be Lup - too loud and it makes Kravitz cringe in nervousness. âWhat are you doing in my brotherâs room with your clothes on?!â She yells, trying to keep somewhat quiet at the same time but failing miserably, which seems to be a running theme with the twins.
Kravitz sighs. He goes to one campus Halloween party after watching Fantasy The Nightmare Before Christmas and Lup hasnât let it go since. He ignores the nickname, and ignores the other thing Lup said even harder because what.
âThis is my room, Taakoâs is on the other side.â Kravitz whisper-shouts, âWhat are you doing here? Itâs after curfew, you shouldnât be out here, itâs not safe.â And it really is risky, Neverwinter High is extremely tight-assed about their rules. Breaking those rules - and getting caught - equals many grueling and boring hours in the schoolâs equivalent of community service.
âPshaw, who gives a shit!â Lup says with a grin and a dismissive wave of her hand. Now that Kravitzâs eyes have gotten accustomed to the darkness, he notices that sheâs wearing a red robe over her PJâs and a pair of bunny slippers which seem a bit of an inconvenient choice in footwear for a night outside. âGet Taako for me?â
âWhy donât you just go around the building?â Kravitz asks with a frown but Lup just scoffs and shakes her head at him, as if exasperated by Kravitzâs ludicrous suggestion.
âAnd go through all that trouble when you can just walk a few steps across the hall to get him? Fuck that! Go get that boy for me.â
Kravitz pinches the bridge of his nose. He doesnât know either of the twins that well but heâs familiar enough with their reputation that he knows itâs useless to argue.
âFine. Wait just a moment.â
Lup grins and gives him a double thumbs up, her ears perking up excitedly. Kravitz closes the window just in case, not trusting Lupâs ability to control her impulses. He doesnât want to come back to his room to find it full of gravel.
Resigned to his fate, he leaves his room and walks across the hall to Taakoâs door. It takes a couple of knocks but then the door opens, revealing Taako in all of his drowsy glory. His hair is a tangled mess falling over his shoulders. Heâs wearing a too large, worn t-shirt that is almost falling off one shoulder and a pair of sleeping shorts that are really way too short to be decent.
Kravitz is used to seeing Taako in carefully put together and thought-out looks, so seeing him like this makes something twist in Kravitzâs stomach and he bites his lip. Taako looks adorable. Thankfully Taako seems to be too out of it to take notice of Kravitzâs ogling.
âMuh?â The elf says intelligently, rubbing at one of his half-lidded eyes, ears drooping, other hand still on the door.
âOh, uh. Your uh- sister is asking for you.â Kravitz stammers out and Taako blinks in response, but doesnât look any more awake for it. He leans forward from the doorway and looks out into the hall, looking both ways. Besides the two of them, the hall is empty.
âMrp?â He huffs out and looks at Kravitz with suspicion. His ears twitch in agitation.
âSheâs ahh, sheâs out on the courtyard, below my window.â Kravitz explains and points his thumb behind him, over his shoulder, indicating his dorm room. Taakoâs eyes, glowing slightly in the dark, follow the movement.
âMeh.â Taako concludes and reaches for Kravitzâs hand, grabbing it before Kravitz has any time to panic about his clammy palms. Taako pulls his door closed with his free hand. Kravitz stares down at their joined hands in confusion before looking up.
âUh, Taako? Itâs just over there? You can actually see my doorâŠâ
âMmm.â Taako says, staring Kravitz in the eyes blankly.
âYou⊠You want me to walk you?â
âMmm.â Taako keeps staring but his ears rise up slightly.
âUh, okay I guess.â Kravitz says unsurely, but screaming internally - heâs holding Taakoâs hand!! and pulls Taako with him to his room which is an uncharacteristic mess of bard-class assignments and reaper homework, double-majoring overwhelms him sometimes and work piles up.
Kravitz leads Taako to the window and lets go of his hand with no small amount of reluctance. Taako stands still, staring dumbly at the window, unable to comprehend the mechanism of opening it in his sleepy state. Kravitz sighs and reaches past him to open the latch and push the window open. His arm brushes Taakoâs in the process and his skin breaks out in goosebumps.
Taako leans out of the window, just a bit too far to be safe and Kravitz is unable to stop himself from grabbing the back of Taakoâs shirt to keep him from falling, just in case, even though he knows Taako has magic powers. Taako doesnât seem to even notice but his other ear turns back towards Kravitz for a moment, like it has a mind of its own.
âThere he is!â Lup yells from down below and Kravitz canât help but to twitch in anxiety. They are so getting caught and raking leaves around the campus for the next month.
âLulu?â Taako mutters, his first actual word of the night as he squints into the darkness where Lupâs eyes glow like a couple of lightening bugs.
âGet down here bro, weâre getting my fifteen dollars back!â
âYou want to go rob Greg fuckinâ Grimaldis on a wednesday night?â Taako asks before he yawns widely, his ears pressing flat against his head.
âUhh, yeah?â Lup says, her tone indicating that it should be obvious.
ââŠOkay.â
Taako starts to clamber out of the window and Kravitzâs jaw drops open because heâs going outside in those shorts? Taako doesnât even have shoes on, just fuzzy socks.
âSee you later, handsome.â Taako says with a tired but charming grin and Kravitz smiles back hesitantly.
Taako jumps down, casting featherfall at the last possible moment to be as over the top as possible. He lands softly on the grass, striking a pose and discreetly pulling the hem of his shorts down a bit while he yawns widely once again.
âShow off,â Lup snorts with affection and then theyâre off.
Kravitz closes his window, hardly believing what just happened. He turns off the lights and goes to bed, still feeling dazed.
He is woken by a tapping at his window, and he curses himself for being such a light sleeper. Kravitz tries to will himself back to sleep but the tapping continues. He tries hard to ignore it until he hears the sound of his very much locked window opening and he scrambles up in alarm, gets tangled in his blankets and falls to the floor with a soft thump.
From his new perspective, he sees Taako stepping into his room through the window. The elf seems even more sluggish than before. He mustâve ran out of energy after managing whatever mischief he and Lup had been up to.
âHey.â Kravitz says quietly, trying to sound casual despite laying on his floor after getting tentacled by his own bed covers.
âMmh. âs cold.â Taako mutters and shuffles, zombie-like, to Kravitzâs bed and gracelessly flops down onto it. Kravitz fights his way out of the blankets and gets up to his knees to peer at the elf sprawled across his bed.
âUh, Taako?â
He gets an unintelligible mumble, muffled by the mattress, in response.
âAre you⊠Are you gonna go back to your room?â Kravitz asks, standing up, holding his blankets in one hand.
âNnn.â Taako whines. He doesnât get up, but at least he rolls over slightly to make some space for Kravitz in his own bed.
âOkay. Okay, I guess this is happening.â Kravitz says under his breath and throws one of the blankets on top of Taako who makes a pleased little noise and burrows under it.
Kravitz settles down next to him, being extremely conscious of their proximity and taking extreme care not to brush against the Taako-shaped lump under the covers.
He lays there, stiff as a board, eyes closed and breathing manually but eventually he manages to fall asleep.
Until he wakes up again, for the third time. Unsure what woke him up, he opens his eyes and finds himself laying on his side, face-to-face with Taako who is wide awake and whose face blooms intense red as Kravitz catches his eye.
Heâs really close and Kravitz feels his own cheeks heating up. Taakoâs breath hitches and they stare at each other with wide eyes.
Kravitz clears his throat, and whispers, âHey.â
âHey.â Taako breathes. âSorry I crashed on your bed.â
ââs okay.â Kravitz mumbles, blinking heavily, because he has had about a wink of sleep and he still needs to get up early. He canât remember the last time he was this tired. âYou can stay if you want.â Kravitzâs eyes fall shut.
Thereâs a beat of silence, before Taako says, âFor realsies?â And Kravitz smiles, already half asleep. âFor realsies.â
I kinda wanged it at the end there I couldnât think of anything good :(
