Hot Fuss - The Killers
This is an album with one of the biggest hits of all time! I know this because even I've heard of it, and I mostly listen to Weezer, MARINA, & whatever random albums I get from the have you listened to this album blog. According to rateyourmusic this album is Post-Punk Revival & Pop Rock, and who am I to disagree? Definitely kinda sounds like Pop Rock to me, and the stuff that doesn't fit into that are probably because of PPR.
Anyways, the album! Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine is a good opener, though it's a bit difficult to hear the words. Probably that punk genre's influence. I liked it well enough, strong instrumental. I don't know music words but I think it's called chord progression. Probably not.
As for Mr. Brightside. I don't really like it. Simultaniously really energetic and not. It doesn't work for me. Smile Like You Mean It is far better in handling the energy & dry vocal performance in my opinion, though Jenny is still better. Out of all the singles Smile is my favourite, though they're all kinda the same.
Back with the rest of the album, Andy, You're A Star is more of the same. The instrumental is better though. I just really don't like it when this guy tries going for higher notes, that's my main problem. I think it's similar to Tally Hall in a way.
On Top proves that somewhat, being the & of this album. I don't mind the vocal performance here, though it hasn't changed from other songs it works well with the instrumental.
After a few more tracks, there's actually one I do like a lot, Everything Will Be Alright! The vocals here take more of a backseat, going along with the instrumental instead of overpowering it. They feel like part of the background. It's very dream-like, I guess. Wish the whole song was like that, though the upbeat changes don't ruin it. Blew me away so much there's an extra rating at the bottom just for this song.
And then Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll makes my ears bleed immediately. FUN!!! Sounds weirdly auto-tuned at points too, though I don't know if it was for sure. Probably the worst instrumental out of the whole package too. Makes sense why this & EWBA are at the back, easily the most different of any of this album's tracks. This one just isn't good. And it also gets a bonus rating!
Rating out of 10: 4/10
It's... okay. I wouldn't want to listen to it again, aside from Everything Will Be Alright. The vocals are weirdly monotone & energetic, like it's being forced. The instrumentals are great, though. If you like the style you'll like the whole album, but if you don't you'll probably give it a 4/10.
EWBA rating: 9/10 GIRR rating: 1/10
challenge: give me music to listen to & i'll listen to it then give my honest review. you can do the same with some of the music i listen to. this is... review battles...
