hello! do u have any new music recommendations?
of course!!! going to throw some general pop/indie/rock/instrumental all over vibes at you? these are some of the ones that i've been having on repeat a lot lately because they bring something bright and fun into my days - hope you enjoy them !! 💛
if i'm honest (trousdale) – oh the absolute vibes of this one. the harmonies. the beat. the slow downs and build ups? that ending? it's like easy, slow, growing ease and joy. that point 3/4 of the ways through the song, that building of things? the payoff? those background horns? the drums? i cannot sit through it without some kind of air guitar / drums / chair dance type beat. it's too good that you cannot help it, it just goes so hard.
close one (fizz) – i have been writing so much love poetry to this song. it is soft and slow and serene like light, all golden hour, the soft golden hues of almost, of here, like this, with me? that little 'fuck it' before the chorus is so fun. this group is made of insanely popular individuals (dodie/orla gartland/greta isaac/martin luke brown???) and together .... they are so powerful. cannot wait to see what they create next !!
run (maisie peters) – there is such a fun vibe to this song. that line of the chorus, that 'i've been lied to / i've been cut and deleted / i've heard some things i will leave unrepeated' is sooooo good, that rhyme scheme that syllable count balance? it immediately went onto my writing playlist w/ that fun beat, that synth, that catchy repetition? the whole album this comes off of is so very good too, esp. 'the band and i'? i really enjoy her sound!!
like a brother (hey, nothing) – this song feels like a lullaby, in the way of being swung in a hammock? all late summer, early winter winds? but there is such a lyricism that gets stuck in my brain, the whole layout of the chorus and is just so soft. i feel so many things. another easy one for the poetry playlist.
margo (sally boy) – oh the orchestral, string opening? the easy flow of it, instrumental and light, before hitting that small bit of silence before the guitar and lyrics come in? and then the absolute hit that is the beat of the chorus hitting? obsessed. phenomenal. i love the balance of gentle, light instruments and the slow instruction of the drumbeat, it feels like a whole story that you can experience, the flow of it!
eightball girl (maddie zahm) – i can leave this song for a few days and then out of nowhere it'll just be in my head again, the vibes of it, that beat of the chorus? the layered voice effects? sometimes songs have this balance to them that my brain just sucks up like a sponge and this is one of them. soooo good. i'll be in the supermarket and my brain will just go eightball girllll, tell me how you feel about meeee and it's perfect.
snow angel (reneé rapp) – this was one of the first ones i found on my daylist that was just like, how did i go so long without you. how did i not know about you. and since then it's been a daily listen. the slow, gentle breeze of that beginning? there is such a rising and falling to this song, like seasons, like the breeze? all tide, all here and there and back again, all resilience and ferocity, softness and violence? that electric guitar and the piano and the feedback just makes me want to just. aaaaaaa. this whole album is just banger after banger too!!
grace (henrik) – it's so fun!!! it brings me so much joy and energy, the easy breezy pop vibes, it's so hopeful and gentle and loving. i have it set as my alarm rn because i really do think it'll last through the sisyphean task of getting me out of bed in the mornings, it just feels like sunlight.

Gonna rewatch Fruits Basket soon so I can finally write that “Shigure is Bastard Man” essay for my friend who, after we finished watching the entire show, said, “I just don’t see how he’s a manipulative bastard. I mean, he’s an asshole, but I didn’t really get manipulative.” May also write some meta along the way about how Momiji is possibly the most mature and emotionally intelligent character in the whole damn show (aside from maybe Hanajima and Hatsuharu) and yes that includes every fucking adult.
Also I will absolutely cry. A lot.

Sometimes I wander onto blogs of fandoms I'm not in just to explore. I like looking at the fanart and the dissertations and the fics and wondering what goes on in canon
Seeing how much I can figure out
Or I'll jump into a new fandom tag on ao3 and get the full weight of foreshadowing without the dramatic irony because I know NONE OF THESE PEOPLE
NONE OF THESE EVENTS
Your dramatic-irony-foreshadowing clues don't work on me!!
it's incredibly fun, 10/10 do recommend

just another day where i am out here thinking about ghost jane! after closing the gate, and the impact it had on her physically and mentally, she's forever connected to the upside down, even when it's sealed off completely. due to jane's abnormal genetics and weak immune system due to what she was submitted to in the womb, her body begins failing her when she's nineteen years old, [after a specifically harsh winter day where she gets stranded at a bus stop for three hours, and is stuck in the cold, and gets sick with a slight fever. then that sickness turns into pneumonia, which leads to her spending six weeks in the hospital under owens' care]. when she's twenty three, her body begins fully shutting down, and she eventually dies at twenty five. her death is peaceful in a sense because it wasn't violent nor unexpected, but it is tragic. even more so, because she's reincarnated into a ghost, who can never move on because of the upside down imbedding itself into her skin, into her body when she was a child. she can venture outside hawkins, and isn't specifically tied to a place because the upside down is ancient, it spread amongst the whole world, and even though it's sealed off, still exists below. wherever the upside down is, active or not, jane can tread, but she was never given the real chance to ever leave hawkins, and knows very little of the world outside the small town. even in death, it frightens her to venture beyond. she's stuck in the town that she loves as much as she hates, wandering around as a mere echo of herself, reclaiming that lost black cat status who doesn't really belong to anyone or anything. there are people over the years who can slightly sense her, or see her completely so she isn't alone forever, but those people eventually move on after their death, where she never can.

Can you give us some details on your world building for the culture of the Galra Empire?
yea ofc!!
I'm still working out specifics, but ofc the galra empire is very focused on victory in battle (hence "victory or death" being one of their most common phrases) and general Conquering Of Enemies which is due both to how the galra culture has always been and also to ten thousand years of war and propaganda. the galra value strength above all else, though what defines strength varies depending on who you talk to. (zarkon, for example, values ruthlessness and sheer power as strength, whereas lotor recognizes the strength in collaborating with people of different skills, and drawing from many different places to find solutions for problems instead of using brute force. both methods of thinking make them strong + dangerous enemies and leaders in different ways that both conform to the ideal of Strength that the galra rule by.)
additionally, galra are fairly social creatures that rely on packs (family/found family units) for emotional needs and physical closeness. (another facet of Strength stems from Protecting The Pack, which is one of the most important expectations of a Leader). galra require physical closeness with loved ones in order to be happy and healthy, and so zarkon and his head commanders purposely use a lot of robotic sentries for the bulk of their crews and forces with only a few actual live soldiers here and there because separating the soldiers from their pack and keeping them essentially locked up with only robots to keep them company makes them crankier and generally more trigger-happy. (fun fact: this contributes to keith's initial prickliness at the beginning !! ofc a lot of it is also the Trauma and his personality but as he gets closer to A Pack for the first time some of the unhappiness lessens as his galra side starts getting what he needs <3)
the empire is, of course, largely dedicated to the war. resources, soldiers, and anything else of use is given to the empire. there are very few Civilian Galra because of the military draft, but those that are around are generally either too young or too old to be in the military. and, contrary to what the paladins see in their travels, quite a large demographic of galra aren't happy with the war, either. ofc propaganda and nationalism are a big part of the culture and so a lot of them are all about Conquering and Enslaving Inferior Races and all that shit but for a lot of them?? they're tired of war. they're tired of their children being sent to the front lines, and they're tired of being half-starved because of the demand for food for the soldiers. they just want to live their lives without having to worry about being drafted to enslave Another Planet when they literally have more than enough resources to sustain themselves. many of the galra who feel this way fled to join rebel groups scattered around the universe, or even the blade of marmora, but a lot of them are still in the empire itself (either because they have nowhere to go or because they're too scared to leave or advocate for change because disagreeing with the emperor out loud is a good way to die).
there's a lot of mixed races in the empire as well!! i mean as we've discussed in other posts, after 10 thousand years of conquering there's been a lot of interspecies mixing around going on. some mixed galra appear galra enough that they can escape some of the discrimination, but most of them are practically second-class citizens. lotor, being the only one of the royal family who's mixed race, gets the brunt of discrimination from the kingdom itself and his family because of how public a figure he is, and that's one of the reasons why his team is all mixed galra because they literally have nowhere else to belong but to each other.
and lastly, the language !! I think I said this in one of the chapter notes, but I'm ROUGHLY basing the galra language off of russian, ukrainian, et cetera. I don't think I'm smart enough to just pull a whole language out of my ass (side eyes jrr tolkien) so all the alien languages have roots in irl languages just to give me a place to start. but I'm pretty much just using basic spelling/words as a base and building on them with my own spelling/grammar stuff, so nothing should translate because I'm not trying to make it translate. I get the initial "translation" of what I'm needing off of google translate (which already makes it a pretty rough translation ahlskjgdh) and then from there I cut out pieces of words and add other letters and change pronunciations so on and so forth, and even compare different spellings across other languages with similar linguistic origins.
(just an example: znaniya ilo smeirk means "knowledge or death" in galran, and I got the base for the phrase from mixing and matching "znannya abo smert" [ukrainian*] and "znaniye ili smert'" [russian*] and kinda fucked with the spelling and pronunciation even further to make it sound harsher and more galra-like based on the galra words we actually hear from the show)
*both base translations came from google translate so they most likely don't translate to their language of origin even before I made the changes
