Imagine having a second child with Viktor Drago...

So I wrote this because @lady-olive-oil was insistant on killing people off, lol. Love you Liv!

I also kind of forgot I wrote this so there was more I wanted to write but I forgot those parts.

You weren't meant to give birth so early. But here you were sitting in a nice relaxing bath, Lily on the bathroom floor drawing more pictures for Viktor while you soaked. If you were honest the contractions had started early in the morning, but they varied between 4hrs and 3 minutes apart. So you had ignored them. But now it was 2 in the afternoon you were pretty sure you were having contractions - the proper ones.

"Lily baby, can you pass mommy here phone please" her little head popped up beside the bath with a big smile. "Are you going to ring daddy? Can I talk to him?" she asked as she disappeared out of the bathroom.

Viktor should have been the one you were going to call but he wasn't.

"I'm going to call Aunt Jenny" you smile kissing her forehead in thanks letting her get back to her drawing. "I'll make Aunt Jenny a picture too" she states, paper rustling about. You pressed the call button next to Jenny's picture (a picture of her and lily at the beach) and waited for her to answer.

"Thank god you called. I'm so tired, I'm literally falling asleep at my desk… What's new?" she sang.

"Code Red" you whispered down the phone.

"Huh?" you can hear the frowns of confusion on Jenny's face. "Oh, Lily, I can go get her from preschool" you could here her moving around more on her end.

"No, Lily's here with me-"

"Hi Aunt Jenny!" Lily called from the floor, voice echoing off the bathroom tiles.

"Oh" Jenny was frowning again.

"The other code red, the new one. The second one" you watched Lily for a reaction but she was absorbed back into her drawing.

"Shit" Jenny shouted.

"Shit, shit, shit! SHIT! Are you sure? It's not those fake ones, those pickle hiccup contraction things" she panicked, you could hear things being knocked around and a draw open and then slam closed.

"You mean Braxton Hicks, and no"

"You're not due for like another 2 months, I'm looking at my calendar. It says on my calender" you could hear her voice go up an octave in panic. You were pretty sure she was also poking the calender too.

Jenny was down as your second birthing partner, after Viktor of course. But since Viktor was away for a fight that was still wasn't due for another 6 weeks, Jenny had happily (and in a drunken state) assured Viktor she'd be your number two should anything happen. But it would be fine because nothing would happen because you still had two months to go.

"I know, I know...Can you maybe come anyway, and maybe it'll be fine by the time you get here"

"Of course, I'm leaving now" she hung up quickly.

"Will Auntie Jenny bring me jellies" Lily asked, pencils poised in her hand.

"Maybe" you laugh, glad she oblivious to what's happening.

By the time Jenny arrived you were out of the bath and sitting in the living room on your yoga ball wondering if you should call Viktor or not.

He'd flown back to the states to fight again, and really concentrate on getting ready as this opponent was almost equal in size to Viktor. You knew if you called him he'd freak out and even fly back (or walk if he had to).

"(Y/n)!!!" Jenny practically screamed, slamming the door closed. You could hear her but not see her. Lily sprinted off to find her Aunt, and reappeared on Jenny's hip.

"Are they for real?" she asked looking like a deer caught in the headlights.

"I think so, they've just got worse"

"Auntie bought me jellies!" Lily waved the box and then wriggled out of Jenny's arms and ran off. At least she was occupied.

“Is it okay to make a call?" you asked in the back of the ambulance. The female paramedic nodded as she carried on writing things down.

Jenny was following in her car with Lily and your hospital bags.

You pressed the call button and held the phone against your ear. There was a series of tial tones, including the international one.

"Hello" it was a quick, short answer.

"Ivan, it's y/n" slight relief washed over you hearing his voice.

"Hello. You want to speak to Viktor?"

"No, no, no, no, no" there were too many no's for Ivan's liking - he felt worried but the fact you weren't crying and he could understand you made him worry a tiny bit less.

Ivan said something in Russian but you couldn't hear, it was muffled, like he had his hand over the mouthpiece. There was the sound of a metal door slamming closed and then silence.

"What's wrong?"

"The baby, its early" there was a long pause from both of you - you both didn't know what to say.

"I'll get Viktor"

"No don't...I mean I know he needs to know, but not right now. You know he'll get on the first plane back, won't think twice about the fight. I can't let him do that." Ivan said nothing but also agreed. But he also wanted to tell his son. Congratulate him, tell everyone in the training room - he had another grandchild.

"I'll let him know it was all my idea not to tell him, just try and act like everything's normal. Please?“

“Are you okay? Are you at the hospital?" the concern in Ivan's voice broke you and you started to cry.

"I'm fine. I'm on my way in an ambulance"

"Are you on your own?" he sound panicked. "Where's Lily?"

"She's following in a car with Jenny" Ivan remembered Jenny from when she came to the beach that day. Ivan was struck by how caring Jenny was with Lily - making sure she ate and drank enough while still having fun.

"She must call me" you nodded even tho Ivan couldn't see you.

"Here" the paramedic handed you a tissue to dry your eyes. "Don't worry, everything's gonna be okay"

Olivia May Drago, born 2 months early but otherwise healthy.

Jenny had called Ivan to let him know everything was okay - you were okay, Lily was okay (but probably had new found profession as some sort of Antinal Nurse specialising in premature babies) and that Viktor's new baby girl was okay too. It was only when Jenny came back into the room, an hour later did you realise she had been talking to Ivan for an hour. "He's so funny, Ivan" she said with a smile on her face. You raised a quizzical eyebrow at her as she peered into the neonatal cot to look at Olivia. "Did you just say Ivan's funny?“ you asked, maybe the drugs were making you hear things." Yeah, the jokes he cracks. But otherwise he says he's glad everyone's okay. I said I'll call him tomorrow"

"You should go, it's late" Lily had crashed out on the bed in the room reserved for partners to sleep on.

"No way, do you know how hard it was to get this parental leave. HR officially hate me, so I'm going to use every moment to stare at this beautiful girl" she cooed, picking up Olivia from her cot.

Lily had been born 4 weeks early, so Jenny had fought tooth and nail to have the right to use shared parental leave to help you look after Lily and the baby assuming Olivia would be born early too, despite not actually being a parent to either. She had initially demanded full maternity leave, but had settled for 3 and a half weeks "shared parental" leave. "That's what they get for not having a watertight policy" she'd smugly smiled sipping non alcoholic wine with you when she told you when you met her for lunch just after Viktor left to prepare for the fight.

You were trying not to cry but the harder you did, the quicker your eyes filled up with tears. So when you blinked they came streaming down your face. "Hey, don't you start crying because I'm gonna start crying again" Jenny moved to perch on the edge of your bed still holding Olivia.

"I know you feel bad, but don't. Everything is okay, you're okay, baby's okay. Lily's okay. I'm okay" the last part made you laugh and you brushed the tears away.

"But we need to make sure Viktor's okay, and that means not telling him just yet because we app know what will happen. I'll just keep taking a million photos and videos so he has stuff to watch. Here, hold her" Jenny passed you Olivia and grabbed her phone to take pictures.

"Do I look a mess?" you asked, aware that not only had you given birth 6 hours ago but you had also cried one too many times. "Actually, you look so good. Which makes me slightly hate you" she placed her phone down and then made grabbing hands at Olivia. "My ovaries hurt when I don't hold her" she blushed.

You where now sat in the hotel suite that had been reserved for Viktor. Lily was laying on the floor - half on top of the fluffy rug, half off - drawing more pictures for Viktor. You were sure she was on over 100 at this point, but it kept her occupied, you enjoyed listening to her stories behind them and writing them on the back of the picture for Viktor to read later.

She was currently drawing the picture of him winning his current fight - the one that was meant to start in 45 minutes.

You were sat on the overly large sofa breastfeeding Olivia, after having to shout at Buddy Marcella and the entourage he brought for you to leave. He'd brought a nanny with him - just in case you wanted to leave Lily and Olivia to go watch the fight. He was driving you crazy more than usual.

You didn't need help, you just needed space and for not a single soul to mention to Viktor that he had an earlier than expected baby girl he'd never seen. You'd also spoken to Ivan at length who had been extra hard and stubborn on your behalf making sure everything and everyone would be perfect.

Just as the fight started Olivia woke up with a cry. You half didn't mind as she'd been asleep for a long time, as if she was waiting for the perfect moment to announce her presence in the world. She was very quiet for a newborn.

You noticed that Viktor seemed to be fighting differently, quicker, even harder, like he just wanted it to be over.

But that wasn't surprising. When Viktor had agreed to the fight, there were a few additional requirements that Buddy had added in. Endorsements and a whole bunch of extra PR stuff, including promo stuff with Adonis Creed.

"Hey!" you called to Buddy. He turned around with that stupid grin on his face. "Just remembered my husband's a person and not just your cash cow" he'd then proceeded to try and butter you up but it didn't work.

As the ring filled with people from either team and the official referee to call the match you spotted Buddy climbing into the ring. You held your breath as you watched him whisper something to Viktor. Ivan appeared and pushed Buddy away, but you could see Viktor was getting impatient and just wanted the result said. You watched Ivan place his hands on Viktor's shoulders and he calmed down a little. The referee appeared and the camera angle zoomed back showing Viktor and his opponent standing either side of the referee.

You didn't let your breathe go until the referee held up Viktor's arms and the crowd cheered. Lily jumped up dancing around with her picture in her hand. "Told you daddy won" she wiggled her hips side to side and threw the picture in the air along with her crayons.

Now you felt sick. Sheer panic and you tried to organise your thoughts and your words to explain to Viktor that you were sorry for not telling him that Olivia had come early, that you cried after every phone call with him because you wanted to just tell him. But you were glad that you didn't, that there were no distractions.

"Lily, come here please" you call, her silence not always a good thing. She skips from the bedroom, her face covered in melted chocolate. Then she stop rigid, eyes wide. "Daddy!“ she screams, sprinting past you. You turn, this isn't how you wanted him to find out. "Grandpa!“ Lily screeches, almost another octave higher. She doges Viktor and throws herself at Ivan.

Viktor doesn't seem to mind that Lily skipped him. He's staring at you or Olivia, or both of you as you rock Olivia in your arms. She's quiet now, as if nothing happened. He drops his bag and slowly walks closer to you. When he reaches you, he pulls you against him, his lips rest on forehead which makes you cry.

"I'm sorry I wasn't there, I'm sorry you had to do this on your own" Viktor tenderly hugs you, careful not to squash Olivia.

You pull away to wipe your face with one hand, surprised at how relaxed Viktor is. "My dad told me. I made him when I saw he had a lot of calls from Jenny, I thought something was wrong" you looked to Ivan, but he was busy cleaning the chocolate from Lily's face.

Everything was calmer. Everything was fine. Viktor sat holding Olivia, with Lily on his lap. They talk in hushed tones over a sleeping Olivia. Both falling quiet every so often to stare at the peaceful baby.

Viktor was stunned by how beautiful his second baby girl was. Her tiny nose, her tiny mouth, her ten tiny fingers and ten tiny toes. Lily's mind was slightly blown by Viktor telling her she was once this small, even he was too.

Together they couldn’t stop looking at Olivia. Every now and then Lily gently kissed her sister - telling Viktor all the things she planned to teach her little sister - coloring within the lines, eating jellies that Aunt Jenny brings etc, eating all the chocolate you could find in a hotel suite.

By the time Ivan got back with food for everyone, it was his turn to fuss over his new grandchild. "World's happiest grandfather" Ivan announced taking Olivia from Viktor. He sat down on the couch with Olivia while you pulled out your phone to show Viktor the million photos you'd taken while he was away.

How to bear the unbearable?

Quarantine week 9, chemo week 15, cancer week 67

I was hoping to write a longer, more thoughtful post about how heroism is boring, day to day, and how ill prepared we are for what it looks and feels like. And hopefully I will! But since I know that it's been a while since I've posted about how things are going, I thought I'd at least catch up those of you who don't follow me on Twitter.

The format makes it easier for me to write briefer updates there, but tonight I wrote more than Twitter usually likes to see about how I feel about my next chemo visit tomorrow (May 15th), which is my sixth on this (3rd) treatment course and the last before I get another set of scans. It's also the 3rd since quarantine began (I snuck one in on March 12th when I was still allowed a companion for the trip instead of chauffeurs). Here's my Twitter thread about it:

"I have chemo again tomorrow bc even though time is a construct I still have to go every 3 weeks. My emotions are all over the place. Most simply, I am tired & don’t want to go through this again. However, it’s some of my only human contact so I’m also oddly excited.

I don’t mean physical contact (which is minimal & as distant as possible) but sharing space w/another person in silent company. It’s an exceptional circumstance so friends will drive me or sit on my (9 ft) sofa. I want to weep with relief about it, but also I’m angry. (2/)

Why am I angry? Well, first we all are. This situation is outrageous, unbearable, & yet we must bear it. Second, I live with & suffer from cancer all the time not just every 3 weeks. I’m wracked with guilt & sadness about how much I need my people around me yet cannot ask. 3/)

I want them to make exceptions for me more than once or twice every 3 weeks. I don’t want to ask, though, bc many of them feel stressed by compromising even this much. They cry when they tell me they wish they could be here or, if they are, that wish they could hug me. (4/)

I have to talk my parents (80 & 76 w/an underlying condition) out of traveling to be with me & suspect & worry they will do it anyway. Of the 504 hours in 3 weeks I spend conservatively 480 alone (& I’m awake for probably 350 of them). It’s unsustainable, unbearable. (5/)

This is what I’m doing to help stop the spread. Living by myself w/stage 4 cancer, working FT, spending 160 hrs a week alone, excited for chemo so I won’t be. I’m angry that more is not offered me. But I’m furious that others don’t have more perspective on their own suffering.6/)

I have been doing this for 9 weeks. 9 weeks is more time in my lifespan than it is for most of yours. Do not take away another 3 months, 6 months, a year or two from me. I do not have that much spare time. I know it is unbearable, but please bear it a bit longer. (7/)

But also: if you do see me (or anyone) walking with a friend or sitting together in the sun, do not assume we are being irresponsible because we are young or because one of us has purple hair. You have no idea what people are bearing in private. Be cautious, but be kind. (fin)"

These past few weeks have felt strained for me too. Mostly I've been doing what everyone has been doing and just trying to get by, enjoying the sunshine when we have it (although it's been spitefully cold and rainy for spring), reading and watching TV, throwing myself into work (especially if it benefits other people), and burning myself out on video calls seeking connection.

When I'm at my least generous, I resent other people (including those I know and love) for only having to endure quarantine itself, or for getting to endure it with someone who loves them and whom they love. I resent the idea of the nuclear family that sanctions a group of 4 seeing one another in one instance, but which makes my friends (living in 1s and 2s and also isolating) feel that they cannot see me. I resent the idea of couplehood that makes me feel that what I'm enduring is somehow a just punishment for my singledom (already viewed as a defect). I feel these resentments, but then I remember to be kind, which is the braver and better thing.

But it cannot be denied that going through this with cancer, as I do every moment of every day not just when I have chemo, is worse than doing it without cancer. If I am quiet on here, or bad replying to texts, or not able to do another Zoom call, it may be because the situation is quite literally exhausting me. It is taking me longer to bounce back from chemo sessions than it used to (now a full week) and I am not able to tell whether that is because of the cumulative effects of the chemo drug (which I was warned about) or because of the psychological drag of the quarantine. I also now find that I can't even really talk on the phone after chemo--that my energy levels are so depleted that only the comfort of having another person around physically works for those worst couple days. It's hard to have the capabilities of your body cut you off from what might be psychologically nourishing.

Thank you, though, for all the good wishes and messages you send from afar (which, now, is nearly anywhere). They absolutely make a difference, as I check my phone repeatedly and incessantly to make sure that, really, I'm not as alone as I may feel. I hope that you are doing as well as you can be doing too, and that you are finding comforts where you can.

checking (you) out (Pidge/Lance)

Summary: Katie works the tech desk at the university library. Lance never remembers to wipe his memory card before returning the camera equipment, which is how she becomes intimately familiar with his life via, of all things, his vlogs. A/N: finally get to post this in full! Written for @plance-zine ; it was wonderful to be part of such a project, and shoutout to the mods for keeping everything running smoothly! :)

People, Katie has decided, are predictable. Watch them for long enough, and their everyday motions start to read like clockwork. At 9 AM on Thursdays, she shows up for her shift behind the library’s tech desk. At 9:20, the girl with space buns and an artfully distressed jean jacket strides in, heading straight for one of the study pods. At 9:25, somebody blows through the doors in a last-minute effort to print materials for their 9:30 class. And at 10:50, ten minutes before Katie’s shift ends, Lance McClain shows up, laboring under the weight of a camera bag, backpack, and tripod.

Katie reaches for the scanner as Lance puffs his way toward her, depositing the tripod on the table with a heavy clunk. It takes him another minute to locate his student ID card: he checks the pocket of his cargo jacket first (not there—it never is) before wriggling his fingers into his jean pocket instead. When he hands the plastic over, it’s warm from being pressed against his thigh.

Katie spares it a passing glance as she pulls up the ‘Equipment Return’ form, filling in the requisite information.

“You’re good to go.” She gives him a thumbs-up, careful not to look him straight in the eye.

“Cool, thanks.” Flashing a bright grin, Lance backpedals toward the doors, slinging his backpack over his shoulder.

Once he’s disappeared completely from view, Katie unzips the camera bag. She flicks the dial to on and goes straight to display mode. Sure enough, the schmuck hasn’t bothered wiping the memory card.

Smirking, Katie kicks her feet up on the table and leans back in her chair.

Let the entertainment begin.

Lance McClain does not know her name, and Katie is completely content with this. She applied for her gig at the tech desk specifically because it required minimal human interaction. Nobody expects her to make conversation; they just want to check out equipment and leave. Occasionally she has to troubleshoot a printer jam or direct tourists to the bathrooms; most of the time, though, she just does her homework and gets paid.

Still, when someone visits at least twice a week, it’s hard not to notice. The first time Lance left recording footage behind on the camera had sparked her interest, and from there it wasn’t too hard to find his YouTube channel, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Which was how she knew that he was a second-year bio major with a side-job at the Starbucks in the Garrison, the student union, and in his free time he liked to record himself attempting to do stunts with his skateboard, if not narrating a funny story about his day or answering the call of things like the Cinnamon Challenge.

Katie and Keith had gotten halfway through that video before Keith closed her laptop.

“I can’t watch you do this to yourself,” Keith said, shaking his head. “Katie, you’re too good for him.”

“I’m hate-watching!” Katie justified, attempting to wrestle her Chromebook from Keith’s grip.

“You know way too much about him to just be ‘hate-watching,’” said Keith, making air quotes with his left hand. “You have his student ID number memorized.”

Katie glared. She regretted letting that piece of information slip. Memorizing Lance’s ID hadn’t even been intentional—it’d only happened because of how many times she’d typed his information into the system during checkout.

“You go to office hours just so you can breathe the same air as your TA for an extra 120 minutes,” she retorted. “You don’t get to lecture me on sad.”

Anyways. All of this is to say that despite what Keith thinks, she does not have a weird, borderline crush-fascination with Lance. And when she stumbles into Green Library’s 24-hr study room at 3 AM to work on a CS project, he’s the last person she’s expecting to see.

Lance is slouched in a swivel chair, earbuds plugged into the desktop in front of him. One dangles loosely around his neck, the other shoved in his ear. Upon hearing someone else enter, he lurches to attention. Katie pretends not to notice—she fully intends to sit on the other side of the room—but Lance doesn’t give her the chance.

“Hey! You’re tech-desk girl!”

It’s a dumb nickname. Definitely not something to get excited about, and Katie schools her features to reflect that. She’s above all… this. Unaffected. “I have a name.”

A quirk of the lips. Lance somehow manages to hook an ankle around the chair closest to him and spins it so the seat faces toward her, an offering. “Wanna tell it to me?”

It’s uncannily close to the Pick-up Line Challenge video he posted to his account a month ago. Katie tries not to think too hard about that.

“What’s in the thermos?” she asks instead, setting her backpack down and warily accepting the chair.

“Redbull and coffee.” Lance’s leg bounces under the table, fingers tapping a jittery rhythm on the keyboard. “Wanna try some?”

“No thanks. It sounds unholy.”

“Oh, it is. Definitely a personal low, but sometimes you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do.” As he gulps his strange concoction, Lance’s face wrinkles, throat flexing as if he’s swallowed a frog. “God, this is like… sacrilege for me.” His voice lowers, confiding. “I’m a barista.”

“I know,” blurts Katie. Immediately after, she freezes, hoping that the comment will drop unnoticed.

No such luck. Lance raises an eyebrow, questioning. A strange light has entered his eyes; by admitting that she’s paid attention to him, Katie has suddenly become the sole focus of his attention.

How much to admit? Best to be blunt—rip it off like a bandaid. The best defense is offense, and all that.

“You never delete your videos off the camera before you return it,” she says.

Whatever explanation Lance had been anticipating, this one catches him off guard. His face contorts as he tries to process the information. “I—my videos?”

It’s almost too easy, slipping into the impersonation. “Hey guys, it’s ya boi Lance, and today I’ll be—”

“Okay, okay.” Lance waves his hands, cutting her off. “Please do not continue.”

“I thought you’d be flattered hearing your own lines back at you.”

“Not like that, it’s weird! You make me sound like a tool.” He sighs. “Well, now I’m disappointed.”

Katie frowns. “Why?”

“I don’t know! I thought it’d be cool if you knew stuff about me because I was like, your secret Starbucks crush or something.” At this, he shoots her a hopeful look.

“I don’t drink coffee.”

“We sell other stuff. Also, you still haven’t told me your name.”

“It’s Katie,” she finally relents, breaking eye contact to pull her laptop out of her bag. When she looks over again, Lance is resting his chin on his hand, staring at her thoughtfully.

“What.”

“So does this mean you subscribe to my YouTube channel?”

“No.”

Lance pouts. “Why not?”

“I like the raw footage better. It’s funnier. Like the first take of the spicy noodle challenge, where you spewed milk out of your nose? Classic.” She cranes her neck to look over his shoulder. “What are you working on, anyways?”

“Nothing!” Lance pushes his body between her and the screen, the broad line of his back blocking her view.

“Doesn’t sound like nothing if you’re being like that.”

“Hey, haven’t you heard about this thing called privacy? 4th Amendment! Search and seizure! Gimme back the mou— ow!”

Years of wrestling with Matt has made Katie adept at underhanded maneuvers; with Lance still rubbing his side from where she pinched him, she takes control of the mouse and opens up the window he’d minimized earlier. Onscreen, several scenes are being recolored and spliced together; she recognizes the footage from earlier today.

“Do you always make your videos on the school computers?”

“I have my own laptop. It’s just shitty and will only run like, 2 programs at a time, and all that’s being directed towards a stats project right now.” Lance eyes her sideways. “Hey, what major are you? Or, wait—are you a freshman? Have you even declared yet—”

“I’m a sophomore. Computer science and math.”

“Ah, the double major.” Lance nods, then puffs out his chest. “Guess what I am.”

Common sense tells Katie that she should play dumb. Let him have the satisfaction of correcting her. But her overwhelming need to prove she knows things wins out.

“Pre-med bio.”

Lance blinks. “Wow, first guess.” His surprise turns sly. “You do have a crush on me.”

Katie rolls her eyes. “Don’t flatter yourself. All it takes is a quick LinkedIn search.”

“Yeah, but you only fully read through someone’s LinkedIn when you’re a) hiring or b) evaluating their bae potential. It’s okay—” he holds up a hand, cutting off her protest, “—I’m honored, truly.”

“You’re ridiculous.” This entire interaction has gone so far off the rails, she doesn’t know how to begin redirecting it. Lance, meanwhile, shifts focus easily, pulling a camera out of his backpack and popping the lens cap off with practiced ease. The next thing Katie knows, it’s pointed at her, Lance narrating: “You’ve heard of Sleepless in Seattle, but we’re here with Sleepless in the Study Room, guest-starring my new friend Katie!”

“What—who said we were friends?” says Katie, trying to duck out of the frame. Lance is an unerring videographer, though; he follows every motion. Backed into a corner, Katie swats at the lens before remembering that it’s from the tech desk and, therefore, her responsibility. She stays her hand.

“We’ve been talking for over half-an-hour,” Lance says, flashing his phone at her, where 3:30 AM makes itself known in thin white strokes. “I’d say that counts for something.”

His smile is bright and close. It’s probably the lack of sleep that’s making her loopy, but the feeling underneath her skin is not unlike a sugar rush.

“I guess,” she says.

She regrets everything the next morning. The minute she gets behind the tech desk, Katie thumps her head down and starts calculating. If she naps in ten minute increments, maybe she’ll recuperate some of her lost sleep and still manage to do her job.

The hours crawl by slowly. At 10:50, the characteristic whoosh of the automatic doors awakens her from her latest sleep cycle, and from somewhere above, an entirely too chipper voice says: “You look like you could use a pick-me-up.”

“This is your fault,” Katie groans, raising her chin to glower at Lance. “Because of you, I got distracted, and then I had to stay up even later to finish coding.”

“I know, I was there. You are a very aggressive programmer, by the way.”

“Just pass over your card so I can check this equipment back in,” she grumbles, wiggling her fingers in demand. Instead, though, Lance curls her fingers around a warm paper cup.

Katie stares at it blankly. “I told you I didn’t drink coffee.”

“It’s my special blend,” Lance insists. “You’ll like it, promise.”

“Yeah, well, it’s going to have to wait ten minutes,” sighs Katie, pushing it to the side and heaving the camera and tripod over the desk. “I’m not allowed to have drinks back here. On-duty policy.”

“Then I’ll keep it safe in the meantime,” says Lance, snatching it back. “I’ll just be over here.”

Katie watches him stake out a table. Blinks a few times, to confirm that he’s still there. This isn’t part of their usual routine. It feels strange but not entirely unwelcome.

When she flicks to the camera’s memory card, it’s clean. That’s weird, too—that they actually had a fully fledged conversation, and he took something she said to heart. In fact, the other night, she’s pretty sure she made him laugh. And there’d been a moment, where Lance had tipped his head back, eyes crinkling, and Katie had thought: shit, maybe Keith had been onto something after all.

When her shift ends, she heads over to the table that Lance has staked out. In characteristic Lance fashion, he’s already found a way to unfold himself over all the available space: backpack slung over the back of an empty chair, feet kicked up on the seat opposite him. Katie nudges them aside as she sits down, reaching over to grab her coffee, and Lance’s face brightens.

“By the way, your earbuds aren’t plugged in completely,” she says, sipping her drink. Lance, despite only knowing her from their interactions the night before, has somehow guessed at her sweet tooth, and the foamy latte goes down easily. “Nice music.”

Lance rips the buds from his ears, gaping down at his phone in horror. Onscreen, a disturbingly animated baby waves its arms, singing, Yes papa, as a banjo strums in the background. Katie marks that down as another piece of information on Lance: listens to educational children’s music in his free time.

“In my defense, it’s for a project.”

“Sure it is,” she says, slapping Lance’s hand away when he tries to grab the coffee back in retaliation, and it’s so natural to mess with him like this, to laugh and call him noodle arms and have everybody else glare at them for being disruptive.

I think it counts for something, Lance had said the other night.

Something, indeed.

Could a StiB Homestar Runner ever be a possibility?

I mean I could do that but I think it’d be a really weird video since HR is so surrealist.

So people keep asking what So This is Basically videos are on the table for the future. There’s a certain criteria list that I follow when I pick video candidates.

I need to like the series at least a little. If I don’t the video turns mean-spirited very quickly and then it’s not as fun. People always go “why do you hate Pokemon/Zelda/Steven Universe/Gravity Falls???” in the comments. I don’t, that’s why I’m able to watch and parody them effectively. You want a show I didn’t like? Adventure Time. Crunchyroll asked me to take that one on and I was like “haha okay” and I think it’s pretty obvious how little I enjoy it.

The ideal candidate for a StiB is a series that I enjoy that has significant flaws that keep it from being great. Steven Universe, Star, Ladybug, and RWBY would be great examples of this. Those shows have a lot of really enjoyable elements but if I was a creative consultant I’d have a LOT of shit that I would want to rework. This kind of series gives me a lot to talk about and makes it easy to write.

Live action doesn’t work well for a StiB. The visuals for these videos are supposed to be childlike recreations of the actual series, so the more character and background references I can find online, the better. This is especially easy for cartoons and games since I can just look up the assets in screenshots and on google images. Even 3D shows are hard though. Drawing a background for something like Danny Phantom is actually 100 times easier than drawing one for Overwatch or Miraculous. If I have to spend time converting live action sets and actors into a cartoon format, that’s a lot of time I’m wasting that could be better spent just drawing.

The series needs to have enough content to make a 2-4 minute nitpick parody possible. Sometimes people suggest things like a single movie or a game like 5 Nights at Freddy’s and that stuff just does NOT have enough meat in it for a parody series tackling story structure and character growth.

On the other hand I’d prefer the series not be too long. Some people suggest stuff like Doctor Who. I try to watch/play at least the majority of a topic before commenting on it (otherwise I don’t think it’s really fair to voice criticisms) and I simply don’t have the time to burn through 1000 episodes of a show I’ve never seen before.

The series needs to be relevant. While I do like making StiB videos, they are also my livelihood. I need to make sure they’ll be able to do well. People need to know what the thing I’m parodying is. So 80% of the time when people suggest an obscure anime I have to throw that suggestion on the chopping block immediately (anime stuff never does well on my channel anyways). This is also my reasoning for not doing things that had huge booms of popularity in the past like Homestuck, Undertale, or My Little Pony. I feel like those things had their time and they had their ten thousand parody videos and I don’t need to dig up their graves, even if other people still are. As much as I love Homestar Runner and I still follow all their stuff, I’d be hard-pressed to call it relevant nowadays.

Most Importantly: I just need to want to make a StiB on that topic. There are just some franchises that are easier to write for than others. For example this month I’m making a My Hero Academia video. I watched all the anime, I read all the manga, and honestly it’s just a good show! It was REALLY hard to write a parody for! Took me about twice as long as normal to get the good lines rolling.While drawing the storyboards for StiB MHA I was rewatching The Legend of Korra because it’s one of the possible frontrunners alongside JoJo for the December/January video. That show is a TRAINWRECK. It has a ton of good ideas but executes almost none of them well, which makes it rife for StiB writing. I jotted down about 50 gag ideas in a notepad doc before I even hit the end of Season 3. Some other series I really want to tackle are Fire Emblem, Ace Attorney, and Resident Evil. They’re SO stupid, I love them.

So yeah, tl;dr it’s hard to express exactly what makes a solid StiB candidate but I know it when I hear it and if I like it then I’ll throw it on my patreon poll.

Happy Cubsgiving! Here are 5 plays I’m thankful for from 2018

I’m still not entirely over the way the Cubs ended their 2018 season. It bugs me that they never really got to celebrate a 95-win season. And while there were a few moments to celebrate in the Wild Card game, as extra innings continued the feeling of “Oh no, bats. Not again...” was palpable at Wrigley Field. That not with a bang, but a whimper feeling tended to overshadow the fact that a lot of great things happened in 2018.

Since we’re in the middle of the long baseball drought of the offseason, I decided to take a look back on a few of the plays that made the Cubs season awesome. Here they are, in no particular order, five plays I’m thankful for from 2018.

5. Anthony Rizzo’s 1000th career game

I had to work on July 26 so like I do a few dozen times during the regular season I listened to this game on the radio. Things didn’t sound good for the Cubs, who trailed the Diamondbacks 6-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth. But Brad Boxberger just didn’t have it that day and after walking Ben Zobrist to start the frame he proceeded to give up three hard hit balls to the next three batters. Javier Baez hit a drive to deep center that the Diamondbacks ran down, but no one was going to be able to run down what happened next.

The legend of David Bote began on this day when he drove a game tying HR to left center, but most people will need to be reminded of that because Rizzo followed that up with a monstrous walk-off blast [VIDEO].

This is the greatest Cubs team of my lifetime and the heart of that team is Anthony Rizzo. He was here for 100-loss seasons. His charity work runs deep through the city. Even the small moments of controversy have revolved around Rizzo standing up for teammates or playing the game with a competitive spirit. He is building a legacy as one of the great all time Cubs. Great players seem to have storybook moments and Rizzo hitting a walkoff home run in his 1000th game is one of those moments.

4. Walkoff grand slams (yes, plural)

Speaking of walkoffs and David Bote, 2018 was the year of the comeback for the Cubs and twice they managed to do that with a grand slam. Both times it came from unlikely players.

Jason Heyward’s offense improved markedly in 2018 but he’s still not close to the player the Cubs thought they were getting when they signed him in 2015. When he came to the plate on June 6 the Cubs were down to their last out. They were also down 5-3 to the Phillies. I have been unapologetically #TeamHeyward since the beginning, but I confess, I did not expect what happened next [VIDEO].

It was an incredible and well-deserved moment for a player that has struggled at times. I almost wrote I couldn’t think of a player who deserved it more, but then...

Let’s get back to this Bote kid. A lot of words have been written about David Bote, how he got to the big leagues, his work ethic and his penchant for the dramatic. But as I said at the time, this home run is the most exciting moment I’ve ever witnessed at a baseball game. It was truly remarkable and I definitely want to see it again [VIDEO].

Oh, and one of the best parts of rewatching these videos? Albert Almora Jr. was on base for both grand slams. Both times he raises his hands above his head almost instantly. He clearly knows they’re gone. You know what they say about watching outfielders to find out if it’s really a home run? Well, apparently Almora can see that even when he’s standing on base in the infield.

3. Willson Contreras celebrates his bobblehead day

Not all memorable grand slams are walkoffs and Willson Contreras had a great one on his bobblehead day this year, but he wasn’t even close to done. A second home run, a double, a single and seven RBIs later, he was done [VIDEO].

As you all know I love the numbers. Entering the series against the South Siders on May 11 Willson was slashing .246/.326/.407, by the end of the game he was slashing .268/.343/.488. Adding 81 points to your SLG in a single day is something I’d expect from an everyday player in mid-April, not mid-May. That particular series was good for Willson who followed up the 4 for 5 day on the 11th with a 3 for 5 day on the 12th. By the time the White Sox left Wrigley on the 13th Willson was slashing .275/.349/.504 and well on the way to making his case to be an all star.

2. Kyle Schwarber: plus defender

Willson Contreras wasn’t the only player showing off on May 11. Kyle Schwarber made this outstanding throw to gun down Nicky Delmonico. One of many similar plays the Cubs left fielder would make in 2018 [VIDEO].

I mean, look at the smile as Schwarber runs off the field. He loves these guys running on him.

It’s almost as if everyone got so worked up with the “Kyle Schwarber is a bad outfielder” narrative that they forgot he was a catcher with a great arm. It seemed like every team thought they should try to run on Kyle and every few games, Kyle proved it was a bad idea. Here he is gunning down Francisco Lindor at second 12 days later [VIDEO].

I mean, he even makes a nice slide on that play. Oh, and Schwarbs isn’t close to done. I know you want to see him throw out Harrison Bader:

Defensive metrics have their shortcomings, but Kyle Schwarber finished the season second in the National League in UZR and first in the National League in UZR 150. He was tied with Andrew Benintendi for first in MLB with 11 assists from left field. Kyle Schwarber: plus defender is for real, and if people keep testing his arm there are going to be a lot more people looking like Harrison Bader when they are thrown out:

1. Javier Baez steals the show

Javier Baez had a career year in 2018 and finished second in MVP voting as a result. He did everything. He played outstanding defense. He hit 34 home runs. He slashed .290/.326/.554.

He also stole 21 bases, including home. Twice.

I already wrote a couple thousand words on these two plays earlier this year, so I really tried to keep this section brief. But before I let the videos of Javy stealing home take center stage I wanted to take a look at how rare it is to steal home twice in the same season.

No Cubs player has stolen home twice in a single season in more than 40 years. Seeing multiple plays like this in the same season is very rare, indeed.

Both times Javy stole home in 2018 were variations of the same trick play. Incredibly, as you’ll see in the videos below, it looks like only the Mets were tricked [VIDEO]:

Matz and Gonzalez clearly missed the play and were caught flat footed. Keith Hernandez talked about the play for another half inning he was so floored. The Tigers, on the other hand, seemed to know exactly what was coming, and Javy stole home anyway [VIDEO]:

Something tells me el Mago still has a lot more tricks up his sleeve for 2019.

A Year of Change: aka How Kpop changed my life!

So I haven’t really posted on here much....ever... but I felt like it was time. Part of that is because I’ve looked back on the year I’ve had since last May and I can’t even believe everything that has happened.

Last year was my step into the real world, I graduated cosmetology school, I had loans to pay, a job to find. I spent the first 3 months terrified that I would mess up, or be told I wasn’t cut out for this. I remember being sick to my stomach every time I got a color, so terrified that I would mess it up.

Then it was announced that Got7 was going to be touring... In the US! Anyone who knows kpop knows, that that doesn’t always happen. So I saved up, and me, my sister and our friend Kelsey got ourselves ready. They had already been to a Shinee fan meet in Chicago (leaving me behind : ( because I had just started my job) But this was a concert! A concert with probably our biggest bias group!

So in July of 2016, I got to go to New York City for the very first time because of Got7! To this day I can barely believe that this is real. The boy’s put on an especially amazing show, being their amazingly goofy selfs. I ended up crying during Just Right, because it had been the song that first got me into them. We had bought tickets to both shows, My friend managed to get p1 for the first show and p2 for the second, me and my sister for p2 for both. I still can not believe how beautiful they are in real life. I still can’t believe they’re real.

After the second show, as we sat in the seats at the back of the venue, watching them break down the stage as we waited to hi-touch our boys, I thought how sad it was that it had to end. Sure we had spent two days waiting 10 hours on the sidewalks of New York city waiting for this. The second show we even had a couple people pass out from heat exhaustion before the show had started. But it had been the best three days of my life. Getting to see Time Square, getting to see an amazing concert and be with my sister and our friend. It was an absolutely amazing experience...

And it was over.

We didn’t know when we would see the boys next, or any kpop concert honestly.

I’m not ashamed to say it made me kind of sad. Really sad.

But we had our memories and our little videos of them that we could watch.

What we thought was the end was just the beginning of a crazy year.

Because in September Got7 announced a fan-meet, but no US locations were announced. The closest to us was going to be in Toronto, Canada. So, being the crazy people we were, we decided Toronto must be lovely in November, and if we’re there anyways, why not see Got7... two more times... (You might be able to see how real the addiction is at this point, we sure couldn’t)

So it November of 2016, I got to see Canada for the very first time. It was my very first time leaving the country.

We got P2 for the first show, but got the cheap seats for the second. It was kindof nice to get to sit back and watch them. It can be a bit hard to see with standing room.

The Kelsey’s (my sister and our friend) ended up being filmed by the Real Got7 crew when we were in line, and Bam Bam complimented my sister’s tattoo during the hi-touch.

While we were in Toronto be got to go to Korea town and found an amazing music store that sold a bunch of Kpop. Needless to say we left more broke then we already were.

Again, it was over. The Kpop depression was pretty real at this point. We had gotten so lucky being able to see our boys, twice within the same year, Two concerts and two fan meets. There was no way we could be any luckier.

Then BTS decided to peek it’s head into the US. December 14th of 2016 we officially had tickets to see BTS! December 17th, we sunk ourselves deeper by getting tickets to the Washington DC fan meet of Got7.

As if all that wasn’t enough, which it definitely was, Shinee announced a concert as well... the same weekend that BTS would be. And only in Texas, which was the day of the BTS concert we were attending, and in LA two days after...

But we’ll get to that in a second. first was the Got7 fan-meet in D.C.

January 21st 2016 I got to travel to D.C. for the very first time.

I still can’t believe it.

We ended up finding a restaurant named Mandu that had amazing Korean food!

I had made a bunch of copies and passed out some before the concert while we were waiting in line. Until it started to pour... 10 hrs, in the rain. Well not raining the whole time, but a lot of it.

Anyway we ended up meeting some amazing girls in line. We’re still friends even now. We bonded over our love of the Got7 boys and all our other mutual groups too. They had even gotten Tickets to BTS in New Jersey too! So we exchanged Instagrams and stayed in contact.

The Fan-meet itself was amazing, Got7 definitely has a way of making every fan meet different.

At the Hi-touch, I was holding one of the comic pages as I went through the line. I don’t know if most of the boys understood it, but the line got held up a bit when I was just in front of Mark (I nearly dies XO) and he read a bit of it and said it was cool!

Also both Kelsey’s told Bam Bam he was fabulous, he asked them if that was a good thing. So be sure to tell Bam Bam he’s fabulous!

On the way home we went to a Korea town in Virginia and got some albums and ate at a bakery.

Again, another fan meet was over, the sadness of not seeing Got7 again for a while was still there, but we still had concerts on the horizon.

So like I said earlier, BTS concert was March 24 and Shinee only was going to have two shows. Dallas was out because we already had BTS tickets.

It started as a joke... Jokes are dangerous. We kept telling each other, oh we should just go to both hahahahahaha.

I didn’t expect it to happen...

So we were going to LA for Shinee, the same weekend we were going to New Jersey for BTS...

This post is not meant to brag, it’s more to reflect on this past year of events.

So on March 24th we headed to New Jersey, meet up with our D.C. friends, and spent the day waiting to see our Boys.

Oh also KENNY was sitting a couple of rows in front of us!

BTS has by far been the most emotional one for me. Yes I had cried alittle during Got7 but BTS was a trainwreck of emotions. Jimin’s solo had me alittle teary eyed, Suga’s First Love had tears coming... But as soon as Jin started Awake... WATERFALL! The girl next to me at one point asked if I was okay! I wasn’t, but I just nodded.

And just seeing the Rainbow ARMY Happen, in real life, it was so beautiful!

I pretty much had tears through half of the concert, if not more!

I was still crying after the concert!

Then we went back to our friends hotel room to relax for a bit when one of the girls came back and said she got off on the floor above us and hear BTS was staying in the room above us. Not totally sure if that’s true, but I can dream lol.

So after a couple of hours, we headed to JFK airport in New York and waited for our 7 am flight to LA.

First ever flight, First time in LA!

Luckily I slept through just about the whole flight there, since we hadn’t gotten any sleep that day.

We spend the first bit of the day just wandering around and went to Korean BBQ that night. We also found Music Plaza, a full Kpop store!

Needless to say, again we spent way to much money.

We had some amazing seats, we were in the balcony off to the left side. We were just before this private little balcony that was blocked off.

My friend nudged me and pointed, we could see into the balcony area and Evan and Steven from Buzzfeed were there! We might have fan girled a bit over that! Not gonna lie.

And Then Shinee!!!

They put on a ridiculously amazing show, obviously! You really can’t expect anything else from Shinee!

As the concert wrapped up, we saw the private balcony start to clear out, and we knew they’d have to go right behind us. I watched the balcony, waiting. Then I saw Steven and Evan make their way out. I turned to fast and just waved, “Hi Steven Hi Evan”

I think it took Steven a second to realize we recognized him, but Evan immediately smiled at us! (Steven did too! It just took him a second)

It was definitely such a crazy weekend, but I wouldn’t trade any of these experiences for anything.

And soon the adventures are going to continue!

July 14th of 2017 I’m going to MonstaX in New York at the same place it all started with Got7 and it makes me get butterflies just thinking of being there again.

July 27th of 2017 We’ll be seeing G-Dragon in Brooklyn, NY. New venue, new experiences!

I can’t wait for the new adventures to happen!

This is gonna be the weirdest post I’ve made in a while, I don’t think I’ve ever made a post dedicated to a girl who was actively reading my blog, but I’m gonna try my best not to hold back what I was going to say anyway because fuckit whatever I guess I was going to tell her eventually.

“Textiles girl [Katy] has become something really special” is how I tried to start a blog post last week but I was drunk and bailed out on it.

Initially I was tweeting about how she was tinder attractive because of her fondness of cats and her familiarity with smash bros. But the more I talk to her the more I get that familiar feeling of “this is a female version of me” that makes me go absolutely bonkers for someone. Yknow, kinda like what happened with Ashleigh but like maybe even moreso.

It started as like cosmically coincidental that I matched with her on the one day out of two weeks that I was visiting raleigh, but then found out that she was going to be spending the summer in greensboro. So since I was going for harem strats my idea was that by chit chatting with her until she moved into town I’d kinda have dibs lmfao.

But like then the more we talked the more and more we’d have in common. She’s one of the only people I know to have the same degree of nearsightedness that I had before I got my vision corrected. We both have the same phobia of commitment after coming out of long term relationships [I mean who doesn’t]. We both order our drinks without ice, she says her favorite color is specifically “royal blue” which is exactly how I worded it until I became a unc student, we got picked on in school the same ways, we both have similarly detailed sex conquest lists, we both have a strange fascination with cheetah print, my birthday is the same as her mom’s while her birthday is only two days off from my dad’s and we even have matching scars on our feet. It’s weird. There’s a lot more but I digress.

I didn’t find out all this before meeting her, but Katy is like the first girl I actually thoroughly enjoyed talking to on tinder. We started snapchatting a few days later and haven’t missed a day since (I think we’re at a fire streak of 17 now). Every day that she’d go to work she’d be bored and beg me to entertain her. It reminded me exactly of when I first started working after I graduated and I used to ask Kailey to try to entertain me. Except the only difference is she wouldn’t. Instead, I’d ask Katy all sorts of questions about herself and it got to the point where I was half guessing some of the answers (but I never got them right. We’re not like carbon copies lmfao).

Almost all of this talk happened after our pseudo-date plans fell through, and so she’s living out in hickory with her parents. I practically begged her to come with me to lake week, but she couldn’t because of family plans, and instead we messaged each other the whole time.

So in typical Tyler head over heels fashion I decided that I needed to do something dramatic to see if this was legit or if I was just getting catfished yet again. I mean we had actually taken the time to go through each others facebook pictures and like talk about our pasts and shit so I knew she wouldn’t be too far off from what I thought she looked like, but idk I just did my best to stay skeptical. But I was excited enough to meet her to drive all the way out to Hickory the day that the lake weekend was over so that I could finally see her and talk to her in person.

And ho.ly. shit. She was cuter than I could’ve possibly imagined. She has this slight southern twang in her voice that I fucking love, and she’s only just barely taller than me, and her laugh had me giddy like immediately. We went out to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in a nearly empty theatre and held hands through like the whole thing. She guided me to a bar, we ate a little food, and we finally actually talked about our lives in person. Parked in a church parking lot and had pretty damn good sex, considering it was car sex. Her parents gave her a curfew and she had work in the morning though. Came home into Ashleigh’s apartment in my boxers and Aaron and her both laughed at me, and I joined them to watch some twin peaks.

I felt absolutely hooked on her though. It was like the best first date I’d ever been on in my life. I felt like I could tell her almost anything, and it was like impossible for us to have an awkward moment. I couldn’t stand the thought of waiting until I got back from Florida to see her again, so I asked if she wanted to see me again on Wednesday. [tuesday was great too, played some smash and chilled with Aaron and Ashleigh, played some magic, went to bars, smoked with them and discussed theology lol.]

and she did, though. We decided that since we couldn’t hang around her parents place and since we’ve both always wanted to, we’d get a hotel room for the explicit purpose of just having a ton of sex and hanging out in alone. It was fucking phenomenal. Her parents weren’t home when I picked her up so I made her give me a tour of her house so I could meet her pets and see what her room was like (she has SOOO much cheetah shit omg <3). We got some chic fil a, I made an ass out of myself yelling about rubbing fried chicken all over our naked bodies in the middle of the supermarket next to small children while we got cider, and we checked into the hotel. We had about 5 hours until we had to drop her off at home, so we basically alternated dual marathons of sex and rick and morty. I want to get absurdly explicit about how sexy it was, but idt I can right now, I only do that kind of writing in private lmfao. The tl;dr is we broke both our 6-hr records by hitting 7 separate sexings. I came 6 different times in 5 hours, it was fucking crazy hahaha. And we got through like 5 episodes lol. pretty perfect day if I do say so myself.

And what made it all the better was I let her pick between my two pairs of sexy underwear - the space tighties from my NY road trip and the cheetah briefs that Kailey got me as a birthday present. Obviously Katy picked the cheetah ones but my go to would have been the space ones, only because every fucking single time I wore those cheetah boxers in anticipation of a date it’s either fallen through or gone totally shitty. They were literally cursed until wednesday. I swear it’s like a sign or something.

I hate drawing this kind of comparison, but there’s something nagging me like Katy represents all the traits that I had actually wanted in Kailey when we first started dating. Like the interest in video games and cartoons and better music taste while retaining the absurdly high thirst for sex lmfao. But it’s like kinda purified by her allergy to smoke, because I feel like that was the only core connection that me and Kailey had for a long time. For a while I would postulate that Kailey quitting smoking weed would be like me quitting melee, and so I kind of fucking love that Katy doesn’t smoke at all. It makes me not want to, too. The day before I left the lake I smoked my last cigarette in anticipation of seeing her. Haven’t had a problem not smoking since, haven’t wanted to pick up a new pack. I think I’m really done with them.

But so long story short I’m getting feelings for this girl because she’s absolutely incredible to me. I’ve only seen her twice but I feel like we’ve been talking forever and I’m pretty committed to doing whatever it’s going to take to get her to date me eventually. It honestly kind of horrifies me to write that knowing that she’s about to read all this, because I know that she’s just getting out of her relationship and we’ve talked about how she doesn’t want to do anything serious right now, so I was just going to keep these feelings under wraps for a long time so that I didn’t blow things prematurely. Kind of reminds me of Exactly how I fucked things up before lmfao. I hate making the same mistakes twice, but who knows.

Insurance not paying a claim!?

Boy this is a good one & I don't know what to do Next! I went with the Lizard insurance even though they are Snakes and don't want to pay for any Claims! It started in 2010 with my truck, I took it to where they told me and they only paid for cosmetic damage even though there was a lot more including my steering was so bad I had to stop driving it. I wanted to take it to a shop that I had my truck lowered which because of we're I lived and the shop was I couldn't drive it, 65 miles. I had AAA tow it to my new house and from there after 2 years of not driving my truck they agreed to have it towed 7 miles to the shop. Well I told the claims adjuster what was wrong, he told me I needed to write a list and drop it off at the shop so I just got my Chopper back from the shop and went down to where my truck was a wrote a list of what I thought was wrong. Here is where the first of my troubles started, on the way home I am riding on the freeway and a truck to the right of me had a blow out and a Giant tire flew right in front of me, I couldn't do anything other than to run it over. It happened so fast, I hit it and made a brown spot in my shorts, jk. I then noticed smoke coming from my Chopper, it was Bad so I pulled over and noticed that my tail light was knocked off and caused some damage and the bold that holds my tail light on came off and rubbed on my new Avon 250 tire and Melted the side wall. I was able to ride home and once I saw all the damage I knew it was a problem. I called the Lizard and made a claim. The claims adjuster called me and said he will be out that Saturday, so saturday came and I never heard from him, I had his number and left a message, so this went on until Thursday and I called the lizard again and they transferred me to the AH boss and I left him a voicemail. Well I didn't hear from him as a few more days went by so Called back and got his boss's boss. The next day I got a nasty voicemail from the claims adjuster bitching at me. I called customer service and told them he went off on me and they can hear my voicemail too but no one listened to me. So I was told to call his boss, I said then I don't want this claims adjuster to come out, I don't want to speak to him or have anything to do with him. They were so sorry and said they totally understand and later that day the big boss called and I told him I hadn't heard from the adjuster other than a nasty voicemail and I want someone else to come out and not him. The boss said I understand and he will take care of it. So two days later the rude claims adjuster showed up at my house to take care of the claim, I was shocked it was the AHole I didn't want to come out but his bosses boss told him he better get out there and take care of this. Well once he was there, he wasn't as nice as he had been and couldn't be more rude than he was. I told him what had happened and the Damage, all he said was Prove it, Prove it, Over and over with everything I showed him. It caused major damage to my shocks and front forks, he laughed and said they are designed to roll over things and that it couldn't happen from hitting a tire in the road, well it can because that's exactly what happened. He was such a AHole I said, why did you even come out, did you just come here to be a @ss Hole or what!! He didn't say a word and just left. They paid out just a little for damages to the paint, tail light and the tire. The tired was new and cost 500 but they paid me 100 bucks for it. Mean while my truck is at the shop still to get looked over for the damage and they didn't pay a dime and the worst part was when I got the truck back from being towed, I started after the tow truck drive let it down and it sounded funny, then I smelt burning plastic so I opened the hood and my entire air intake system was gone!!! The burning was th vacuum hoses laying on the headers. I called the shop where my truck was and they said they are not sure what's going on but to call back. Well they are no longer in business and I lost all that so I called and opened a claim, now they are investigating me over this. So I have damage from 2010 that has never been fixed, my bike isn't right and someone had stolen my Volant cold air intake that's not being taken care of. What do I do? This is BS, I don't deserve this from my insurance Company and for them to treat me like they have, not pay out the claims. I needed my truck smoged Dec 31st so because all the parts to have it smogged weren't there I couldn't have it down and I have a ton of late fees with the DMV in California. Whoops, ha ha, got a little dark, anyway, 2017 was also a year in which I wrote a bunch of dumb baseball articles. Some of them I liked! The end of the year always seems like a fine time to share them with you, and it will help you forget about ... you know ... the other stuff. The everywhere things. Baseball is important because it makes you forget about what’s important, and I love it so.

10. Mariners-Angels comeback

This is one of my favorite genres, where I methodically scrutinize a baseball game using grainy screenshots and the occasional GIF. That reads like sarcasm, but I’m absolutely serious. There’s something about diving into the minutiae of a single game and remembering that every foul ball is a hitter not doing his job as well as he wants, and that those are usually in front of every important hit. It will never fail to blow my mind.

This comeback was extra special because it happened against the Mariners, who had an absurd comeback of their own the previous year. They had earned this kind of pain.

I’m not sure about the rest of the pain the Mariners have accumulated, though. That probably exists because of something you did.

9. Defenestrating the Eric Thames hypocrisy

In which Jake Arrieta’s pitching coach hints that an out-of-nowhere success story must be dirty because he came out of nowhere. The pitching coach of Jake Arrieta, who arrived from Baltimore on a bus with a suitcase that had a hole in it and then became one of the best pitchers in baseball.

The pointless PED speculation was stupid then, and it’s stupid now. Sometimes it’s fun to get righteous. This was one of those times.

8. Bryce Harper vs. Hunter Strickland

By most accounts, Strickland is actually a sweet feller. Respected by his teammates, nice to the fans, et cetera. But he sure is a dingus on the mound sometimes. There was no reason for him to throw at Bryce Harper, but boys will be boys. And boys are complete jackasses. We just had a bunch of boys over for a holiday party, and we had paver stones flipped over, a pogo stick thrown into a tomato plant, and a chair that ended up on the roof. As the father of two sweet, perfect girls, these kinds of surprises completely foreign to me, and I must reiterate that boys are complete jackasses. Especially these two baseball boys.

Anyway, the fight was funny because Bryce Harper looked extraordinarily silly throwing his helmet into right field, and I can watch it all day.

7. We’ll miss you, intentional walks

I love dumb baseball stuff. Intentional walks gave us the potential for dumb baseball stuff. Now there’s less dumb baseball stuff. You should be offended, too.

This was written before having that feeling of “Wait, what just h ... oh, right, the walk thing” 50 times during the season. It was always annoying, and I’ll never get used to it. But at least we shaved six seconds off every other game.

6. The Oral History of Tom Brady on the Expos

I write a lot of dumb things, but there’s a special spot in my heart for the dumbest. This piece of historical fiction was certainly the dumbest, featuring a one-note joke that Tom Brady would have made the Expos a successful franchise and a baseball institution.

Except I had all sorts of fun writing it and sucking different characters into my story, like a shirtless Pat Burrell and Montreal’s most popular basketball hero, Kevin Durant. It’s dumb, but it’s already written, so you might as well get dumb along with me.

5. Game 2 of the World Series

I was so convinced that this was going to be the wildest baseball game I would see for a decade. People tried to tell me that Game 7 of the 2016 World Series was wilder, but that’s only because of the stakes inherent in a double-elimination game. Otherwise, that was a sloppy mess of a game with a couple of lead changes. A classic, to be sure. But it wasn’t like Game 2.

There was a fire outside of Dodger Stadium and the whole place smelled like ash. I can’t stress that enough, and it certainly added to the scene, especially when some dude jumped into the Astros bullpen. In retrospect, they probably should have let him throw a few pitches, just to gauge the arm speed.

It was a blast to watch and a blast to write, especially considering that it was going to be the wildest baseball game I would watch for at least 72 hours.

4. Game 5 of the World Series

HOME RUNS. They found shrapnel from this game in operating rooms eight miles away. It was a dumb abomination of a baseball game that we’ll be talking about for years. My favorite part might be remembering that it was once a calm, mellow game with Clayton Kershaw in complete control. Or it might be this:

I think the national audience had to see a replay to pick up on the fact that the ball landed near the pyrotechnic display, but at the ballpark it was an immediate realization, and it was perfect. That game was baseball exploding. Here’s video proof.

3. Here comes the pizza’s 10th anniversary

I wasn’t a huge Here Comes the Pizza guy. I’d seen the video once or twice, but that was about it. Marc Normandin kept bugging me, though. “Hey, you gonna write about the anniversary?” “The anniversary of Here Comes the Pizza is coming up, you have plans?” So I dug into the video a little more.

And I came out of it a convert. Man, what a stupid and delightful moment in time that was captured perfectly by the perfect announcers to have describing it. A lot of stars had to line up for this moment.

There had to be a dude willing to throw his pizza at another human being, for example.

2. The Marlins are so weird, they ruined the thesis of this feature

The history of Miami baseball — before they had Major League Baseball, even — is strange and painful. I used the horribamazing home run sculpture as a metaphor for it, and I was proud of how it turned out.

The thesis was this: Miami baseball is about to stop being strange and painful because new owners are coming, and they’ll realize how stupid it is to put this city through another painful, PR disaster of a rebuild.

Welp.

Still, a lot of the other points hold. Kind of. I mean, if you squint.

1. The Astros were the perfect team for Houston

This feature came after the first two games of the ALDS, when we weren’t sure if the Astros were going to last more than a few days in the postseason. If I had it to do over again, it would have been something that was published after Game 7, but there was no way to know.

In retrospect, there probably should have been a way to know. This team was special, and I loved following them. The Yuli Gurriel dumbassery took a litle sheen off the perfect story, but there’s still a lot to love about the composition and timing of this team. I loved the moment George Springer, the Connecticut-born son of Panamanian and Puerto Rican immigrants, took the field with a gigantic Texas flag before Game 1 of the ALDS, exhorting the crowd and helping them forget about the pain that was all around them. It was incredibly Houston, a mish-mash of circumstances and realities that didn’t have to make sense, but ultimately did.

Houston is a strange, ugly, beautiful town that probably shouldn’t exist. This team was perfect for them.
