other people have said it more eloquently than me, but saying stuff like “well, what more do you need to know? it’s gay” does nothing but tell me you want me to lower my standards. like, when i was in high school, i went and found every single fiction book with lgbt characters in my school’s library & read them all. and some of those books were great! but some of them were also incredibly triggering. and i didnt know that because i didn’t look up anything about the books other then they had gay characters.
and like, there’s a book i read years back with an ace main character and i see it recced all the time because it’s one of the few YA books out there with an ace mc, but i, an asexual person, hated it so much that seeing it in any list of lgbt books immediately makes me suspicious of anything else the op recommends because it shows me that they don’t care about quality. i see so many lists of lgbt books where people in the reblogs have to go “hey, watch out for this one, it contains assault” or “actually, this book has like, ten different trigger warnings, maybe don’t recommend it without them?” and all that shows me is either the person recomending this just searched for gay books and has no idea what theyre about, or they put no thought into my potential comfort while reading, in which case.... why should i listen to you
#aster speaks#cant believe i dissociate all day and THIS is what i have words for#anyways everyone please raise yr standards for gay media. if you tell me to watch a show bc a protagonist is gay but its a genre i hate#& the sexuality doesnt get mentioned till like season 4 and its for one episode?#im going to maul you#media
