7. Did they have lots of friends as a child? Did they keep any of their childhood friends into adulthood?

when stephi was four years old, the wilkersons moved house, from their little village just outside dublin into the city. this is when she met ISLA MORIARTY, and they became fast friends, in the way that four year olds do. over the years, it’s more of their shared experiences that formed the foundations of their friendship. the fact that they had lived their lives and their stresses and their traumas TOGETHER created a bond that very few things could break. they are vastly different people on the surface - isla, a wild and almost cruel woman, steph calmer, and focused more on self preservation than self pleasure - but their love and friendship rivals so much, and it’s clear when you see them around each other, or talking about the other, that they adore each other. neither isla nor steph like people knowing they’re capable of adoration. 

at 10, the school steph went to started up a PEN PAL scheme with a town in germany. this is how she began developing her german language skills, but more importantly, it is how she met AVERY RITTER. they grew up in the age of the development of social media; their friendship initially only to the extent of letters ( that steph would write at least weekly, but a lot of the time it ended up being more frequent than that, though she would send everything once a week in one envelope to save on postage ), adapted with the development of myspace, bebo, facebook, skype. texts were expensive and for very special occasions that SIMPLY COULDN’T WAIT, indicating a rare long distance phone call when either one of them got home to the landline. when they’re both 19, steph spends the summer in germany. we’ve skipped over the part where they’re hopelessly in love with each other, which is important. this is the summer steph realises a lot of things, forgets that she and avery share a kiss and represses a lot of feelings she doesn’t believe she’s supposed to, or ALLOWED to have. despite this, and despite many obstacles, including and not limited to her abusive boyfriend, distance and her own damn stubbornness, the two remained closed friends. after her miscarriage and cancelled engagement, she studies in germany. she lives with avery during this time, before she moves to america, and finally their unspoken love comes to the fore, and they deal with it accordingly ( read as: eventual marriage ). avery is endlessly patient with her, and she is endlessly confused by it and him, but thankful.

an honourable mention goes to MONA MARTIN, steph’s cousin, who is more like a sister to her, who has supported her through every hurdle her life has thrown at her, and almost background friend CHUCK CHAMBERS, who is ever present in mona’s life, and thus steph’s. they have all remained close. 

does college count as childhood? at 18, steph goes to university in london, where she meets OAKLEY BLOOM during freshers week. another unlikely friendship, you might think, steph and oakley bond over tequila and terrible partners. stephi’s in america now, but they keep in touch ( thank you internet !! ), and when steph’s back uk side, always makes sure to see her. 

GENERALLY, steph wasn’t the most popular girl at school. glasses to thick and figure too unconventional to keep bullies at bay, sarcasm too biting to keep many people friends with her after too long. but she had her friendship group, she was quiet ( unless with isla, though they went to different high schools ), and kept out of the way of things and people. almost all of her high school friends stayed there: as high school friends. 

12. What is their favourite food?

steph loves food, just in general. food is one of the things she LOVES. so she’s frowning at this question, but her gut takes us to lasagne. specifically, though, vegetarian lasagne, as she stopped eating meat when she was 8 years old. it’s actually the one thing she has made sure she can cook without murdering the kitchen.

22. What are their favourite insults to use? What do they insult people for? Or do they prefer to bitch behind someone’s back?

she tends to use long strings of swearwords that no-one ( except maybe mona, isla or a fellow irishman ) can decipher. she will never bitch about someone behind their back, though she might go to mona or her granny for advice on how to confront a person ( this happens rarely, she confronts quite easily as and when needed ). her insults can be for anything from not owning a kettle ( to make a proper cup of tea ), or for some of the more serious things; lying is a big one, though that is often faced with the SILENT TREATMENT instead of an insult.

23. Do they have a good memory? Short term or long term? Are they good with names? Or faces?

steph’s memory is great, she’s especially good at remembering numbers and facts ( she’s an historian ). when her depression peaks, she isn’t always as good at remembering what she’s doing or what she said a week ago, or even ten minutes ago but her talent for “ useless ” facts never leaves her. 

37. Do they like to read? Are they a fast or slow reader? Do they like poetry? Fictional or non fiction?

steph ABSORBS books. she loves to read, she adores it, and as a kid she would read anything she could get her hands on. as she grew up and learnt her taste, she found that her favourite thing to read is either non-fiction ( about ANYTHING. she’s always thirsty for knowledge of any kind ), and her favourite fiction is fantasy sci-fi types, though she will still literally read any book you give her. she enjoys poetry more than she lets on, but that’s still nothing compared to her love of prose. she reads very fast ( and it’s the only thing she will voluntarily keep her glasses on for ). she can consume any YA novel in a day, and other things may take longer depending on the denseness of prose etc. she always has an opinion on anything she reads, and certain things she will only read once ( the first and most poignant mention here is a song of ice and fire. george can get FUCKED ).
