So a mildly positive thing: I got an email from one of the places I applied to, and they said that while they decided to go with an internal hire/advancement, they think I would be a good fit for a future opening at one of their other campuses. Now they didn’t say when or anything, but I feel really good that they emailed me because most places don’t even bother lol. Anyway I’ll have to keep an eye out to see when this other position opens. Still, makes me feel hopeful that I will eventually get a job somewhere 👍

Meryl Mei will be the ultimate big bad of the part

She has a lot going on and nobody knows everything about her. She is a principal, business owner, fashion designer, wife, mother, and leader of a small crime family. How. How is she doing this. Is she ok. There is something here and I hope it does get more elaboration.

And then there's Usagi. I do not think he'll be a traitor, but if he is... ohoho.

Meryl Mei hired him, a 17 year old drug addict. Why. Why did she do that. He doesn't have experience, he's not been shown to particularly smart (besides the raft thing which is very interesting), he didn't have relationships with the others besides Jodio kind of, and his stand is useless when he's alone.

What does Mei see in him? Why did she send him on this mission? I hope there is more elaboration eventually.

There's also the fact that she just HAPPENED to hire the gang to steal from the man with the lava rocks. That's a very very very interesting coincidence, is it not?

Anyways I love Meryl Mei and I need her to have a larger role in the story, I hope this was coherent, bye.

Meryl Mei will be the ultimate big bad of the part

It makes the "I wouldn't trust your friends" warning more shocking. Unless the translations were wrong, Rohan was rather vague when he advised Jodio to be careful of his companions. Meryl Mei is a very beloved principal of McKinley High, the main three trust her judgment, and she treats them almost as if they are her own children. She is very similar to Polpo in that both give off the appearance of being a well-respected, admired public person overseeing their underlings, but are very different when the performance drops. Polpo acts like this sophisticated, worldly, and trustworthy Caporegime revealed to be a slob who betrayed Giorno's trust and sees his underlings as mere pawns. Meryl Mei gives this girl-boss vibe of being a crime boss, designer, and principal but we know she is making kids commit crimes for her- even if it means they could be injured or arrested. It could set up the gang to feel betrayed the way Giorno was with Polpo.

As the possible big bad? I don't think so. I don't think she would be a direct main villain. Instead, if we have Meryl Mei involved with the big bad, I think we would have a DIO&Pucci dynamic where someone else is the main villain because they were following a legacy or unaccomplished dream Meryl Mei had. Whether Jodio and his gang killed Meryl Mei or a completely different group kills her, it sets the other main villain up to go against the former.

I actually made a headcanon about Usagi's backstory that explains why he's a drug addict but is considered a good student prior to his current backstory.

Looking at it now with what we know, there is two scenarios that could explain why he's not a drug addict but he was first seen buying drugs:

He's buying the drugs for his mother. It's possible that Mrs. Aloha'oe is still grieving over her husband's death and became addicted to drugs as a result. Usagi could have been guilted or coerced into buying drugs for her. It would explain how he mentioned the family was living off life insurance but his mom has seemingly tight control over it, which is why he took the job.

He's buying the drugs for himself but he never took them. I'm speculating he's a very sheltered kid, like the one being bullied in Chapter 1, and wanted to rebel or have more friends by deciding to buy drugs to try them out but chickened out. It's all an act and his attempt at finding friends and it led him to join the gang.

Meryl Mei seems to take on kids who are extremely troubled so that she could act as a savior who could convince them to do her bidding. If you think about it, all four characters are very impressionable and vulnerable: Usagi is a drug addict, Paco was abused to the point where he was mutilated while suffering from kleptomania, Dragona is gender non-conforming (they/them, trans, whatever you interpret) and has that used against them, and Jodio is diagnosed with ASPD. I have a whole theory about the psychotherapy test and how that connects to Meryl Mei as well.

There's also the fact that she just HAPPENED to hire the gang to steal from the man with the lava rocks.

I think this was all a coincidence and nothing more to dive into. Pretty much throughout JJBA we've seen how Stand Users are connected and attract one another; we see this especially in the second continuity. However, Meryl Mei could still know that the lava rock exists but not aware of who owns it or plan on getting it while the diamond heist occured.

I love Meryl Mei as well, and I do miss her. I hope she appears more soon!

i’ve been reading murder in mesopotamia. i’m fifty pages in. quite complicated feelings about it so far. you’re confronted with the typical white english bigotry of the story’s watson, nurse leatheran, immediately. we are looking at a fairly diverse group of people (all suspected of murder) through the eyes of a middle class english racist. the self awareness is staggering, maybe, or possibly christie is just deeply classist and ironically unaware of her own racism. the character has much in common with christie herself, who volunteered as a nurse during wwi.

the setting also reflects her fascination with graverobbing/archaeology. it’s the royal cemetery at ur dig site, in iraq. so before anyone even fucking dies or the main character has a racist thought i was like Damn. Put it back. with all this present in the text i don’t blame myself for assuming nurse leatheran’s constant racist thoughts about mrs. mercado were a reflection of christie’s racism as well, but i actually now believe it to be more the case of christie attempting to write from her middle class nurse-sona’s pov, likely a composite sketch of all the nurses she mixed with during wartime. she does this quite well but remains completely blind to her own posh, low ranked member of the peerage upper class racism, i.e nurse leatheran’s racist misogynistic remarks about mrs. mercado’s jealousy over the upper class white woman (who just got murdered) vs her other characters’ remarks about interracial marriage. christie’s choice of a pov character dares you to sort acceptable 1930s racism from unacceptable 1930s racism! fun!

so far my favorite character is the victim, louis leidner, because she started death flagging before she even made an appearance. so great was her reputation for death flagging that when nurse leatheran’s getting a ride to the setting during the first chapter and asks about the woman she’s been hired to care for, everyone in the motor carriage just shuts the fuck up until one of them is like “Yeah. Really, really glad they hired you.” and she’s like Oh. she’s extremely endearing once she’s actually introduced as well. once nurse leatheran arrives louise immediately forces her to become her friend, nakedly desperate. i thought this was really cute, and sad! louise is extremely resentful that she is going to die, and all of the other characters won’t stop being misogynistic to her (ONE OF THEM KILLED HER.) it actually made me feel sad when she died, so i hope she’s actually the culprit, even though that would be stupid.

anyway, i got to the part where poirot shows up. he just happened to be in iraq. chilling. like 50 miles away. it’s actually not safe to be within a day’s drive of a detective, jesus christ.

I’m rewatching Jem and the Holograms right now, I’m on episode 5. But anyway, it’s so funny how often the episodes end with explosions, and spoilers (below the cut)

I read The Reaper a couple days after you released it, but my lazy ass chose to write a comment later....n bam! it became Halloween😂 Thought why not celebrate the holiday by rereading it, n I did!

The whole "reaper" theme? cult? was super fascinating. The rules were also interesting--based on the 1st rule, would JK eventually teach the reaper language to the MC?

And this is the question that I'm dying to ask; How do you think the MC would react/feel when she finds out she was 2 steps away from her freedom? Like I can't imagine...since she was able to escape from Ilseong by being w JK, would it be relief? Sorrow that she lost her only chance forever? Or anger that JK skillfully prevented her from breaking the borders by luring her into his arms?

Sigh this mc....what was she thinkin taking all those suspicious gifts from her window sill?😭 Don't they scream red flag? I feel bad for her..but wanna scold her at the same time😂

Thank you so much for your kind wishes, I have so many projects to do within the next four weeks - I'm still unsure of how I will do it all. Unfortunately, that has halted my progress in writing, I feel like such a bad author 😭

I had a lot of fun developing the reaper's traditions and you're right, the cult-like themes are there - that was my original plan for the fic before I went through with the killer-for-hire idea. I think eventually JK would teach the MC their encoded language as it could be very useful especially when they want to communicate outside of the "collective."

As for the MC's near escape, I think she would feel a blend of conflicting emotions. You're right, staying with JK meant she would be free from Ilseong, so in the end did she ever really have a choice? Was freedom ever an option? I think she would give JK the cold shoulder but also stew in her own thoughts and emotions. Lots of inner turmoil that's for sure.

Ah, the suspicious gifts! MC was far too optimistic in thinking someone was granting her free kindness, but it was all of her favorite things it was very hard for her to say no to the kind gestures 😂

Also, this is super late, but HAPPY HALLOWEEN (aka, my favorite holiday).

I'm super bummed I couldn't get anything out for Halloween, but maybe I can do something spooky anyways!

good morning! saw a post reminding me that gravity falls is turning 10 years old today and i got emotional cause that show is so so special to me 🥺 ANYWAYS i wasnt very productive yesterday, but ill just say it was a ‘rest’ day. gonna finish putting up all my clothes on depop, including the homestuck ones. ive got a lot of dishes to do as well as cleaning up my room. gonna walk to the peppinos today to ask if they’re hiring, but its very cold and windy outside so im not looking forward to it. still waiting on a quote for suzy from the junkyard. michaels can give me more hours, a few people are quitting, but because its a big corporation my managers can’t directly give me a raise :( which sucks but if i get more than 20 hours a week there ill still be fine. i still feel stressed about the accident, but im gonna fix what i can control, which is my apartment and my room and my job situation as well as listing things to sell. hoping today is a good day 👍
