Prompt: ”Don’t move”

”Don’t move.”

Kouichi froze, one foot still in the air. His whole body went cold at Kouji’s words.

”What?” he asked.

”Don’t. Move.” Kouji repeated.

Kouji’s voice was low. Calm, despite the threat in his words. Kouichi felt very unstable where he stood balanced on one leg. He swallowed. Kouji dropped something to the ground behind him.

”It’s a Calliophis bivirgatus”, Kouji said.

Kouichi blinked, almost lost his balance.

”A… a what?”

Kouji took a very slow step forwards and knelt next to Kouichi. He let out a quiet sss-sound, emulating a snake’s sound. Kouichi finally noticed the red head among the leaves. His heart beat faster.

”It’s a snake!”

His voice was a little loud. Kouji winced and the snake lifted its tail, causing Kouji to retract his hand just a bit.

”A blue coral snake”, Kouji said, voice still low.

He made a new hissing-sound. Kouichi took a shaky breath and watched the snake slither ever so slightly closer to Kouji’s hand. His heart felt like it skipped a beat.

”Hey”, Kouji whispered. ”It’s okay. Sorry we scared you.”

Kouji was nuts, Kouichi decided. Absolutely, literally nuts. Crazy. Off the deep end. A few fries short of a happy meal. Kouichi had seen people die from coral snakes. The snake let its tongue out, sniffed Kouji’s fingers. Kouichi couldn’t breathe.

”Those are dangerous”, he hissed.

He couldn’t see Kouji roll his eyes, but knew it happened anyway. Kouichi pressed his lips together. The snake climbed up on Kouji’s hand, curled around his arm and finally settled across Kouji’s shoulders. It was big, almost 1.5 meters. Kouichi stared.

”You can move again”, Kouji said with a laugh. ”It won’t hurt us.”

Kouichi put his foot down. Stared. Threw his hands into the air and turned around.

”I’m going back to town. You’re insane. Why did I ever agree to this?”

He started walking. Kouji laughed behind him.

”You know how rare these are?” Kouji asked. ”Let me at least get a picture.”

Kouichi didn’t turn around. He buried his hands in his pockets and kept walking.

”You can find the way back yourself.”

”But what if it bites me?” Kouji asked, still laughing.

”Good luck, have fun”, Kouichi answered.

He heard Kouji move, sounds getting quieter as he moved away. The flash went off, lit up the trees behind Kouichi but died out and let the darkness caused by the canopy fall again. Kouji ran to catch up to him and slowed his steps once he was next to Kouichi.

”You’re such a coward”, Kouji said.

”And you are insane. Why did you decide to cuddle it?”

Kouji shrugged, put his backpack on his back again. Kouichi shook his head.

”I’m buying you a Happy Meal when we get back to town.”

Kouji tilted his head, stared at Kouichi. He was obviously confused and Kouichi was not going to explain. He patted Kouji’s back.

”Just remind me to never follow you into the forest when we’re on vacation ever again.”

Kouji snorted.

”Yeah, sure. We’ll go to the beach next time.”

”No snakes there?”

Kouji didn’t answer. Kouichi let out a sigh and decided to save that argument for later. At least he knew Kouji would keep an eye out for him so he didn't step on the snakes.
