WTF Friday

First of all thanks to TR for the game post and wrap up yesterday and course big thanks to all of you for the comments. 

That was a tough one to take yesterday. Going into the match we were down 2-0 so clearly there wasn’t much hope. The question wasn’t whether to watch the game or not, we ALWAYS watch, but how to watch it. I, like most of you, always believe we have a chance no matter the odds or the opponent. Whether that’s realistic or not is a different story but as Milan fans we always hold out hope.

Then the game started.

The first 30 minutes we had zero shots. None on target and none even into the stands.  Arsenal had all the possession and we couldn’t even get out of our own end. They were STILL getting in behind our fullbacks, Welbeck was STILL harassing the back line and Suso had again been marked off the pitch. I swear I didn’t even hear his name til the 28th minute. It was exactly like the first game a week ago. Hope was fading fast. No big deal. That’s what we all feared but rationally expected. No big deal. It was time to take my son to soccer practice anyways.

Out of habit I had my son bring up the game on the FuboTV app on his phone. By the time it connected he tells me we are up 1-0!!!! Holy crap! What happened? Who cares!! It’s game on! Quickly the mind set goes from concession and acceptance of defeat to...

Of course I’d be sitting in my car watching the game outside in indoor soccer complex but who cares, confidence was high! Surely Arsenal would crumble after allowing the first goal. Their fans would turn on them. Boos would cascade down upon their players. Wenger would be making that Wenger face. Our traveling fans would help will us to at least a second goal and then who knows beyond that! 

Well we all know what happened shortly thereafter. No point in getting into it. The air got let straight out of our balloon. The last time I felt that deflated was when our old friend Niang did this:

It’s down to the league and the Coppa Italia Final now.  This means less match congestion and the ability to focus more on the task at hand.

CHIEVO ON SUNDAY

Sunday we welcome the flying donkeys of Chievo to town. Losers of 6 of 7 and just one win in the last 111 days. Had we advanced past Arsenal this would have been the ultimate trap game before the international break. Now we should be coming into this game wounded but hungry. We were able to rest a few guys yesterday and should hopefully be able to put a full strength squad out. No idea who the RB will be yet, but that shouldn’t be a big deal. Last time we played them we went to their place and got a 4-1 win. Kalinic even scored. Let’s hope for more of the same Sunday morning.

RANDOM STUFF

- I’m fine with Reina coming. I’m positive that has nothing to do with whether Donnarumma stays or goes. I don’t think he’s going anywhere this summer.

- An old unwanted friend showed up yesterday... we took 14 shots and only 3 were on target. Over 2 legs we had 30 shots and only got 4 on target. Only Calhanoglu (2) Kalinic (1) and Kessie (1) put shots on target. That means zero for Jack, Suso, Cutrone and Silva combined.

- 11 league matches and the Coppa Final in the next 65 days. That’s not bad.

- We currently sit on 47 points. I’d guess we need at least 70 points for a shot at 4th. That means at least 7 wins the rest of the way and very little chance for slip ups. It helps that Roma and Lazio still have other fish to fry.

- It’s possible that depending on how things shake out and when they re-schedule the Inter game that it could ver well be the decider for who gets 4th. That would be nuts.

- I was really hoping for Man City and Barca in the next round of the CL. I wanna see new pep versus old Pep. Pretty good matches all around. Happy to see Madrid-Juve. I’m going with Juve. I’ll root for Roma against Barca, but that’s a tall task. Not really excited about the Liverpool-Man City game. Always prefer same league matchups are delayed as long as possible. I’m sure Bayern won’t sleep on Sevilla the way ManU did.
