like I think what really pisses me off about a lot of romances (esp cishet romances) is how random and abrupt they often are, and then it's treated as blatantly obvious to everyone around them. like of COURSE they're in love, it's a man and a woman who spent time together! of COURSE they're in love, they've been friendly for 200 pages! of COURSE they're in love, he shows her basic decency! mask of mirrors may take place in a racist colonial city-state descending even deeper into fascism than it already was, but. well it's not a world of cisheteronormativity. diversity win this cop is trans etc. etc.
