omfg non-english/non-england-residing (and to an extent non-uk-residing) ppl supporting england in the euros need to a) find some self respect but most importantly b) need to stop wishing for them to win bc they're not the ones who have to deal with the physical consequences if they doooo 😭
#i can't keep hearing about england winning in the media or irl for the next few days/months/years ughghghghgh#i was gonna say consequences for the 4 years but u just knoww english ppl will drag that out for the next few centuries#like they always do with whatever they think they have ownership of.....#anyway... ¡¡y viva españa!!

What are some Spanish shows you would recommend to someone wanting to learn more Spanish through shows? Preferably shows that where they’re streamed at have a subtitles option
(Same anon, meant to include movies as well but forgot before sending)
Hello anon!! Let's see:
Shows:
I am currently watching El Ministerio del Tiempo (The Ministry of Time), it's a great show to not only learn about the language but also about the history of Spain as the show is about these time travelers trying to mantain history untouched, it's pretty neat! I've done some googling and it used to be on Netflix, but I don't think it is anymore. I've seen there's some English subtitles you can download, but I don't know how you can integrate that into the original video. Here is a post about someone using like a plugin to see the subs directly through the RTVE Play page (where it's still available) so maybe try there.
I just spent fifteen minutes looking for Spanish shows that have easy access to English subtitles but I haven't found any (at least of the ones I like), so I think they might be a bit tricky to find; I'll recommend them to you nevertheless in case you manage to get a hold on them.
The quintessential Spanish TV shows are imo Los Serrano (The Serrano Family) and Aquí No Hay Quién Viva (Nobody Can Live Here); they both have very simple premises and are just lighthearted sitcoms (Los Serrano is more narrative while Aquí No Hay Quién Viva is more similar to The Office). The latter is probably the most iconic one of the two, it is quoted daily and it is really good, while the former just exemplifies the 00s in Spain (keep in mind the shows are form the 00s so some of the plots might have not aged so well).
Paquita Salas is a modern classic, this one is definitely inspired by shows like The Office and it's also incredibly iconic, memeable and quotable. Anyways, it's about this washed up talent manager and her agency, and it has tons of cameos from famous Spanish people, it's very fun. It is on Netflix but I do not know if it has English subs (I think it does tho. Maybe? There's a possibility that's for sure). Also the seasons are like 6 episodes each so it's very easy to watch.
Skam España :) It had to be here :) And I know it has English subs cause I helped translating it lol. It's basically the Spanish remake of Skam, it's very good and I really recommend it. From season 2 onwards you can watch it completely in Youtube (just search for skam españa season x in the search box and you should be fine), or you can go to the best place in the universe, where you can find all episodes in true skam fashion :)
I am kinda embarrassed cause I haven't watched many Spanish shows so I cannot really speak for myself, but here goes a list of shows that I've heard are pretty good and where you can find them (maybe subbed!): Las Chicas del Cable (Netflix), Sky Rojo (Netflix), Merlí (Amazon Prime), Vis a Vis (Netflix), Veneno (Netflix), and El Internado (Netflix).
Movies:
I have watched even less Spanish movies so yeah. But I can still recommend some let's see
La Llamada (The Call, in English is called Holy Camp! for some reason) is the only Spanish musical I respect, I've seen both the movie and the original musical and I love them both so much, the movie is great (with the original actors of the stage production) and yeah I couldn't recommend it enought. It basically is about these teen girls who are at bible camp and one of them starts dreaming about God. It sounds boring now that I think about it but it's not I can assure you. It isn't really religious either don't worry. It used to be on Netflix but I don't think it is there still, I'm sorry :(
This one's a bit controversial but I'm putting it here cause it really shows the contrast between different regions in Spain; Ocho Apellidos Vascos (Eight Basque Surnames, once again, the English name for this movie is Spanish Affair for some reason???). Anyways, this one was a revolution when it came out, I don't know how many times I watched it in the span of like 2 months, it was a lot. The actors are all great, the story is pretty solid and it's generally funny I think (albeit maybe perpetuating certain stereotypes). It is a very simple premise; guy meets girl, guy falls in love with said girl and follows her from Sevilla to Euskadi. On Google it says it's on Netflix, Amazon Prime and HBO so... yeah.
The most beloved Spanish filmmaker is Pedro Almodóvar, and his movies are classics (that I have yet to see). Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) and Volver (Return) are probably his best works, and I really recommend them! They are both available on Netflix :)
Last week I watched another really famous Spanish movie from a director who passed away earlier this month, ¡Ay Carmela!, a movie about this troupe of itinerant artists during the Civil War that really shows how both sides of the war were. It's on HBO Max.
As with shows, here are some rapid-fire Spanish movies I've heard are pretty good: Los Santos Inocentes (Amazon Prime), Bienvenido, Mister Marshall (HBO Max), El Laberinto del Fauno (HBO Max and Disney Plus), Celda 211 (Netflix and HBO Max), La Lengua de las Mariposas (Amazon Prime), Mar Adentro (HBO Max), and Amanece Que No es Poco (HBO Max and Amazon Prime). I have actually watched the three last ones lol, I just didn't remember them.
Hope these recommendations serve you well, and please let me know if you watch any :)
#ask#mar adentro could ruin your life btw be careful#i had to watch it in high school so i had no escape. and oh my god.#also i regret to inform y'all los serrano is no longer available on youtube#soldado caído :(#and i know i have to watch almodovar's movies. last weekend we were gonna watch volver but then my dad remembered ay carmela#and one day a few weeks ago i went out with some friends and when i came back they were like 'we just watched mujeres al borde de un ataque#de nervios :)'#and i was like WHAT#anyways i have to watch it by my own someday#i added this post to my masterpost!! in case anyone wants to look for it later!!!

All this talk about colonization made me think of this tiktok of a Spanish guy that was whining bc he would get backlash if he publicly celebrated a Spanish holyday (that was about the discovery of America I think, basically it was celebrating the colonialism)
Anyways, he went on and on about how he shouldn't have to feel ashamed for being Spanish and even more so we should be grateful for it bc the indigenous people were barbarians...
Listen, no one says that you shouldn't feel pride for your nationality. We're just telling you that being proud for your colonizer history is something that you should feel deeply ashamed of
Viva España, but fuck that guy in particular

I didn't spoke yet because I couldn't make a proper drawing.
Anyway, I'm so proud of my national team winning the Women World Cup! After 13 years, my national team won a World Cup again! The girls did a great World Cup and I know they're aware about the impact they have with this! They're a reference for all girls who dreamed to play football (also glad to see boys taking reference of the female team)!
🇪🇦¡VIVA ESPAÑA!🇪🇦
Thank you Spanish Female National Team to make us dream again!

I can’t speak for Checo or Franco, but I can tell you about Carlos and Fernando (and also about their accents when speaking English!)
Now, I'll warn you: this is long. This gets political (I need to explain Spanish history from the last century and a dictatorship. About this, please take this with a grain of salt. This is a left-leaning view of Spanish history, taught to me (i was born in the late 2000s) by other left-leaning people (who also weren't there to see it. Dictatorship ended in 1975 and my mum was born in '76). Your mileage may differ, specially if you were taught this differently and from different people)
Linebreak for clarity!
Let's start off with Carlos. What you need to understand about Carlos is that he's from Madrid. His accent is a pretty blank slate, it's the most similar to, like, Received Pronunciation in the UK. It's the dialect you hear in ads, see on the telly and hear on the radio. The old money thing with Carlos is not just that he's old money: to be old money in Spain, you need to have kept that money during the Civil War (between 1936 and 1939) and through Franco's dictatorship. A very conservative dictatorship, very pro-royal, very sundays-are-for-church and very ¡VIVA ESPAÑA! Basically, it's fascism. Franco came from fascist groups very much inspired by Hitler and Mussolini. What you need to understand about the Civil War, is that it started by overthrowing a Republic, that had replaced the monarchy. The dictatorship did not end because the Spanish people rose up and fought. No. It ended because Franco kicked the bucket and he decided the next ruler of Spain will be a king. That was in 1975. Carlos' grandfather was a diplomat/consul in Bolivia, surely between those years (i cannot confirm this but timeline-wise it makes sense. sr was born in the 60s and we do not know when he started working, but i mean. 1950s sounds like a plausible time for me. carlos's grandfather was born in 1926 btw). To be in a position representing the gobernment, you need to agree with those ideologies. This is in a time if anybody found out you did not agree with the dictatorship, the police would appear at your house, request you come outside, take you to a lonely road and shoot you and bury you there. There are bodies of important people we have not found because they're buried on random ass roads in this country. (Lope de Vega, for example, who was a great author and a part of the Generation of 27. He is studied in all high schools and one of his plays is compulsory reading. He was also gay. And republican. And so, when the war started, he was shot and dead.) Alright, history over (for this part anyway). All of this to say, Carlos' family is historically conservative and loaded (without even mentioning the fact that Reyes was high society from Madrid. where did you think most of Carlos' surnames came from?). Carlos speaks, when not speaking to the press but rather with his friends (with Teto on Don't Blink), in a rather young, unserious manner. Lots of "cabrón" and "tío" and dropping his Ds at the end of verbs (this is mostly in the participle form. you can see this in this clip! (he flipao tío vs. he flipado tío)). He doesn't speak posh is what I'm trying to say. Many people that fit his background try to overcorrect for it by speaking in this way. What I'm trying to say is, Carlos is what we in Spain call a cayetano: posh, upper class, patriotic (cayetanos also say cabrón a lot. like a lot lot). They also wear white pants with below the ankle socks. While speaking English, Carlos does not try to put on an accent. He also struggles with idioms a lot and speaks English while translating directly from Spanish in his head, despite the fact that he has probably gotten a very much higher than average teaching of English and quite a lot of experience. (If I'm not mistaken, he went to a british school [side note that is the poshest school you could go to. in my experience, they actually don't make you that better at english than the rest of us. i've never gone to one but] and he has lived in the uk for several years)
Now Fernando. Fernando is working class and from the north of Spain. This is important because Spain does not have only one language. There are several, and most are up north. (Galician, Basque and Catalan are up north, Valencian is down the side. That's only counting the co-official languages though). Asturias does have its own co-existing language, but it is not officially recognised, and therefore it is not taught in school. This is Asturianu, notable for having closed vowels (Oviedo (in Spanish) vs Uviéu (in Asturianu)). It's sort of similar to Galician, but that's because they are geographically close (literally neighbours). I'm willing to take a punt that Fernando's parents spoke Asturianu, and if not, his grandparents definitely do. Asturianu isn't something he talks about, and it's something I'd genuinely would love to ask him about. I'd wager a guess that Fernando's Asturianu is very very rusty, but this vowel closedness does impact the way he speaks. Specially if you get clips of younger Fernando (Minardi, early Renault), you can see that. He's also quite a quiet man. When speaking English, you can hear a mish-mash of accents and he makes the same mistakes as Carlos most of the time. However, after 20-odd years in Formula 1, he has picked up quite a lot of idioms and his English is alright. If you take Fernando saying the word car recently, it's oddly British. Fernando's accent speaking English is quite similar to my father's, which does make sense. (They are both northern spanish men from roughly similar areas and ages who work in English environments and need technical words for these environments.)
Question for Spanish speaking F1blr-- non Spanish speakers (such as myself) are def missing out on the nuanced differences in accents and dialects between Spanish speaking drivers. What do you pick up from the way Spanish speakers like Fernando, Carlos, Checo, and Franco talk? (Ex. Fernando is from a working class background, while Carlos is upper class and seemingly old money-- does that come through in the way they speak? Do Franco and Checo have regional accents from within their home countries, and have they changed their Spanish to sound more European after living abroad? Do any of them use fun country specific slang?)
Anyway, hoping this turns into the sequel of the British accent post because I love hearing about sociolinguistics. Though this may be more difficult since obviously the Hispanic world is a lot bigger than the UK.
#ohh i could talk hours about the political implications of carlos sainz but i wont!#this is more than enough for now

i read your post about opinions on drivers and the tags on that post. i'm shook i don't know anything about spanish politic but i speak spanish so spill the tea on sainz sis, i'm curious 🍵🍵
(I had a bible written here about the political situation in spain because I felt chatty but OF COURSE my laptop had to freeze and I lost everything I had written lol)
Anyways, gonna give a kick summary of spanish politics
- Up until 2015, spanish only had two main political parties: PP (right wingers) and PSOE (started as socialists, now they’re centrists)
- Before the 2015 elections, two other big parties showed up: Ciudadanos/C’s (like I said on the other post, self identified liberals and centrists, actually fascism with a touch of progresism masked up as a cool thing for younger people) and Podemos (sociodemocrats)
- Ciudadanos is lead by Albert Rivera. They were nobodies in Catalonia until the independence thing, and they started to get popular because they defended the unity of Spain, opposed to independentism and anything that isn’t ESPAÑÑÑÑÑOL enough for them, and want to impose the spanish language and culture over all the other cultures and different languages and traditions we have all over the country (which btw there are A LOT bc Spain is super diverse, we have 4 official recognised languages and many more non-recognised ones).
- C’s is basically a fearmongering party, whose main voters are
- All in all, they’re just ultranationalists, closer to fascism than centrism and that have just started using feminism and LGTB as a way to look more “progressive” when literally every body single person knows that they hate women and sexual minorities just as much as any other right wing party
if you have any more questions about spanish politics ask away lol elections are only a few days away so there’s a lot of stuff happening lately
Anyways, about Carlos now:
The only politicians that he follows on Twitter are:
- Albert Rivera and Inés Arrimadas (members of Ciudadanos). He also has liked some tweets from Rivera talking shit about catalonia lol
- Donald Trump. I’ve had people tell me that this doesn’t mean anything, because “he might only want to laugh at him guysssseeee” like… lmao yeah, sure, that’s probably why :)
He also follows some “troll” twitter accounts run by homophobic, mysoginist and racists men
And this might not even make sense since you’re not from spain and familiar with its politics, but even before I decided to check his follow list, he always gave me this “frat boy” type of vibes. Like, for example, how much he uses the spanish flag EVERYWHERE. Using the spanish flag here has always been a taboo thing (except during international football matches lol). If you come to Spain, and see someone with a spanish flag bracelet, or has the spanish flag anywhere on their bodies/cars/wtv, run away from them because they’re fascists. And Carlos even makes his dog wear a spanish flag collar lol
I also just found this trying to find a pic of his dog, that’s someone asking him if he got that dog because he hunts, or only because he liked the breed, and he answered “both!” (big big big big big big yikes from me dawg)
he also has a huge spanish flag hanged on his room (like who the fuck does that lmaooo) and during the Catalunya GP (two? years ago) when the independence thing was wayy more relevant and things in spain were very rocky politically because of it (and many other things), he posed with the spanish flag, and when people gave him shit about it, he came out saying that “theres nothing wrong with being proud of your country and showing our flag”, months after hundreds of catalans were beaten up by the police, a group of gang rapists got freed from jail, while another group of Vasque people are still on jail after being accused of terrorism for a bar fight. Totally reasons to be proud of this country!! Wow Viva España you guys
this is the post I originally made some months ago, I probably mentioned more shit here that I forgot about so you can give it a read if you feel like it after this wall of text i just wrote hahah
after all, he comes from a rich family. He’s just another posh kid who has never had to face any inconveniences on his entire life, just another privilaged frat tier boy who thinks that leftists = bad because they want to steal my tootbrush and has never set a foot outside of his rich boy bubble and likes murdering animals as a sport. Nothing to be surprised about, but also nothing I want to support
Maybe “fascists” is a word too big for him. In spanish we have the wonderful word “facha”, which is like a pejorative name for right wingers and conservatives but that are not full on “Arriba España, viva Franco, muerte a todos los inmigrantes, moros y sudacas y viva el hombre español” like supporters of parties like VOX. But these fachas are still pretty fucking shitty people who put Spain over everything else and support actual fascists
#anon#ask#btw the tags on that post wete a joke lmao#elections are on Sunday and we had a debate yesterday with the leaders of the parties i mentioned#and albert rivera was saying a lot of stupid shit and being a rude jerk interrupting everyone and talking over the other 3 guys#and since it looks like carlos likes albert a lot i bet he actually agreed with all the shit he said yesterday lol#oh fun fact idek if people are trolling about this or not#but since c's got popular it's a meme that albert rivera is addicted to coke???#idk where this comes from?#but there's a lot of pics of him looking super fucked up with red eyes and shit lol and people meme the shit out of those#and also there's a video of him yesterday after the debate#going around on circles on stage??? like what was he doing????#yeah this is so off the topic but i thought it would be funny to mention it#so you get an idea of the type of person that c's is lead by lol

Volatilizando invierno
Poco a poco, peldaño a peldaño, Stein um Stein.
