benson’s relationship with tenderness towards randy is so fraught and conflicted and it drives me insane because it’s almost all projection? like on one hand he genuinely wants to comfort and help randy, show him the softness he deserves (benson deserved). but every little pathetic thing randy does, every moment of ineptitude or weakness or submission, is either something benson sees in his past self and wants to punish or stamp out (because he’s convinced himself that showing weakness means getting hurt), or something he sees as denied to his past self, and then he’s raging because why does randy get to be soft and innocent and coddled when benson never was. he’s earnestly protective, both of randy and of what benson has convinced himself randy represents, but he’s also so angry and bitter and resentful. so he caresses randy and cries over his wounds but also hits him and controls him and like??? he’s punching a mirror the whole time????????

Aziraphale is so awful at communication, even worse than Crowley is, bc he just can't seem to use his words and explain that he's trying to do this FOR CROWLEY. Not "for Crowley's own good", which is what is being heard, but "for Crowley" full stop.

It isn't about changing Crowley, it's about giving him a gift, rescuing HIM for a change, courting him. Maybe even thinking that this will leave them free to continue whatever they've finally started down here, without the ever-looming threat of Heaven or Hell behind them. But certainly it's meant to be a gift. They showed the scene of Crowley creating the stars for a reason. We needed to see him as Aziraphale saw him, happy and unabashedly joyful, so that OF COURSE Aziraphale would think he would want that back. Not listening to what Crowley told him point-blank in the Job episode: that That. Is. Not. Him. Anymore.

The Fall changed him, fundamentally. It permanently changed his relationship with Heaven, it shaped his personal philosophies, and while it hurt at the time and still does, it has also given him things like opportunities and relationships and freedoms he never would have had otherwise. And he wouldn't change any of it.

And it hurts him deeply to think that Aziraphale would, except that THAT ISN'T HIS INTENT AT ALL.

And round and round and round we go again...

The thing is, I don't think Aziraphale thinks of it as changing Crowley at all. To him, Pre-Fall Crowley and Demon Crowley are the same person, kind and fun and sweet and cool and equally beloved. So to him, there should be no difference whether Crowley is here on Earth or up in Heaven with him, he'll still just be Crowley, and at least this way they would be safe and protected.

All the while Crowley sees it as Aziraphale's long-term love and acceptance being conditional (like God's that was already ripped away), that Aziraphale has just been slumming it with him being a demon bc there wasn't anything they could do about it, and that he's jumping at the chance to fundamentally change Crowley the first chance he gets.
