Simon had no idea that going to college was going to be this hard.

He sat at his desk in his small dorm room, leaning back in his chair as he thought about the few months leading up to his first semester in college. Bram had gotten into Yale early decision, and Simon had been overjoyed for him. He, of all people, deserved to get out of Georgia and go to a really good school. Bram was just as happy for Simon when he’d found out he’d gotten into University of Maryland, his top school. It was no Yale, but it was a good school, and Simon was proud of that. Leah, Abby, and Nick had all gotten into schools they loved, too, and the last few months of senior year had been filled with celebrations and happy memories.

And then reality set in.

Bram moved in earlier than Simon did, so they spend their last night together in mid-August. “So I guess we should talk about us now, right?” Simon said, biting his lip.

“I guess we should,” Bram replied, swallowing slowly.

They sat in silence for a moment, neither boy wanting to ruin the magic by starting the dreaded conversation they’d both been avoiding since graduation. Finally, Simon broke the ice. “I don’t want to lose you, Bram.” His voice caught.

“I don’t want to lose you either, Simon.” He reached across the table (they had gone out for ice cream that day) and took Simon’s hand. “We won’t be too far away from each other, only a few hours of driving, so we can visit each other every once and a while. And there are so many apps and things we can use to videochat each other at night. We’ll text every day. We’ll —“ he paused for a moment, then continued. “We’ll make this work, I promise.”

“Okay.” Simon smiled despite the tears dripping down his cheeks. “We’re still going to be exclusive, right? I just want to make this all clear now so we don’t run into problems and disagreements later, you know?”

“You’ve watched too many teen dramas on TV, haven’t you?” Bram chuckled.

“You know what, Greenfeld, I’m trying to be serious here.” Simon couldn’t help laughing, too.

“Yes, Simon, we’re going to still be exclusive. I couldn’t imagine being with anyone but you anyway.”

“Me neither,” Simon replied, blushing. “I love you, Bram.”

It was the first time he’d ever said those words to him, but they felt right.

Bram didn’t even hesitate before replying, “I love you, too.”

Bram had moved into college the next day, and Simon followed suit a few weeks later. Neither of them had had time to drive to see the other yet because of Simon’s rehearsals and Bram’s soccer practices and games, but they had made plans to see each other in just a few weeks.

Simon could have sworn it was years by how slowly the time was passing. He looked at the homework sitting on his desk before sighing and pushing it aside, picking up his phone before thinking better of it and opening his laptop instead, pulling up Gmail. He opened up a new message, addressing it to bluegreen118@gmail.com.

Simon pressed send and closed his laptop, returning to his homework. His roommate walked in a few minutes later and Simon pulled out one headphone for only long enough to say a quick hello before putting it back into his ear and drowning out the background noise again. He kept glancing at his phone, hoping that it would light up with a new reply from Blue, from Bram, but it didn’t. Simon figured he was busy with soccer practice.

Just as Simon was putting away his notebook, homework finished for the night, the screen lit up with a notification from Gmail. He grinned, opening it up immediately.

They FaceTimed until after midnight to Simon’s roommate’s annoyance (“Simon, you really need to talk to your boyfriend earlier. Putting his headphones back into his ears, he pressed play on the playlist Bram had made him of songs that reminded him of Simon and their relationship.

EFL Championship Match Previews – 15th February Saturday

Hull v Swansea

Our Friday night viewing from the Championship presents two out of form teams in the shape of Hull City and Swansea City. That is especially the case for Grant McCann’s Tigers, who are winless in seven, losing six of those in question. The last two of which were 5-1 and 3-0 to Brentford and Blackburn Rovers respectively. Swansea are four league clashes without success, and were involved in a fairly dour 0-0 with QPR in midweek.

Games of this nature between two teams clearly suffering from some form of drop in confidence tends to either go one of two ways. Firstly, this could be a match where both go into their shells and almost play through the motions, or conversely this may actually be quite open and end-to-end, with each believing that the opposing side are there to be taken. I’m of the opinion this could be quite a close encounter.

A word of note for anyone betting on football in the UK at this moment in time is that there are severe wind problems up and down the country. Therefore, this has an impact on the game, with wind quite possibly the worst condition to play football in, especially if you do indeed play a certain style. Taking the matches from Tuesday into account, four of the six finished under 2.5 goals, mainly due to a lack of rhythm contributing because of the weather.

Looking at the forecast for Friday night in the Hull area it does look as though a mixture of wind and rain will be in the air. With both really struggling for form anyway, this has all of the makings of being a scrappy kind of encounter.

Hull are dealing with a rather heavy injury list and were missing 12 players for their last game. There is a chance this number be reduce by only one or two for the visit of Swansea, but couple in the fact that they recently lost star forwards Jarrow Bowen and Kamil Grosicki in the transfer window then it suggests plenty of negatives surrounding Hull. Also, some new faces have been added and they’ll undoubtedly take some time to settle, with Marcus Maddison still adjusting to life at this level having been mostly in the lower-leagues beforehand.

Swansea are a team that although don’t have many injuries, they don’t have that many options either. Steve Cooper only made one substitute in the QPR game on Tuesday, that despite not playing to their best and still having a realistic chance of winning. A similar eleven should again take to the field, and considering they’ve failed to score in three of their last six it suggests they may be rather laborious in front of goal again.

I am more than happy to recommend Under 2.5 Goals on this occasion. The only worry is if there are some defensive errors but confidence won’t be high across the squad and as such I don’t see too many risks being taken.

Asian Total Goals Betting Recommendation: Under 2.50 at 2.000

Birmingham v Brentford

Whilst there is a fairly sufficient gap between both Birmingham City and Brentford on the Championship table at this moment in time, there are many reasons to believe Saturday’s match should be quite an even affair. The reason being is that whilst Brentford will of course be attracting many headlines because of the way the play and that they’re involved in the promotion race, Birmingham are going nicely about their business too. They’ll believe they can beat Birmingham, without a doubt.

Pep Clotet has guided the Blues to a nine match unbeaten streak in all competitions. That has gone almost under the radar purely because they occupy a mid-table position and there is still a big enough gap to the play-off spots to maybe hint that a few more results are needed if they’re to truly get involved. Still, they’re going great guns at the moment and have developed the handy habit of winning close games. Their last six wins read 2-1, 2-1, 2-1, 3-2, 3-1 and 1-0. The most recent being on Tuesday away to Barnsley.

Brentford have lost only three of their last 14 in all competitions, and on Tuesday they experienced a real top of the table clash versus Leeds United, and it ended in a draw. The widespread opinion from the footballing community was that Leeds were the better side and Brentford perhaps under-performed slightly. Still, Thomas Frank was quite happy afterwards and if they can back that draw up with a win here he’ll be even happier.

My one doubt backing Brentford is always when they are away from home. That may seem strange considering they’ve been to Bristol City and Hull City in recent times and won 4-0 and 5-1 respectively. However, sandwiched between that they drew 0-0 at Huddersfield Town, whilst losing at Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers not so long ago. I very much plant Birmingham in a similar sort of category as those teams; an outfit who are so tough to play against and never easily beaten.

We however can’t deny both are in good form and have been scoring quite a few goals of late. Birmingham are now four unbeaten at home in all competitions, and they’ve not actually kept a home clean sheet since beating Blackburn in October. They’re therefore likely to need to score at least twice here at the very least. Good thing is they’ve only failed to score in one of their last 12 overall. Brentford are good for goals of course, and both teams have produced decent Expected Goals (xg) figures in recent time which suggests creativity isn’t a problem either.

I can only foresee quite an entertaining game here. The perception is that Birmingham are a bit of an ugly team but the recent addition of Scott Hogan is a game-changer, without a doubt. He compliments Lukas Jutkiewicz nicely, whilst Brentford’s front three are the best in the league. Over 2.5 Goals has to be of worthy consideration.

Charlton v Blackburn

Charlton Athletic against all the odds went away to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday and came away with a 1-0 win, whilst Blackburn Rovers netted three fairly late goals to defeat Hull City 3-0 at home. Therefore, both the Addicks and Rovers approach Saturday’s match in high spirits, which does raise the prospects of quite an entertaining game.

Both consistent factor, and an unwanted one, that Charlton and Blackburn have in common is that they have many injury problems. Darren Pratley and Andre Green were just two other fairly high-profile names added to the list after sitting out the Forest game, and at a time when Lee Bowyer was starting to believe injuries were a thing of the past. Sam Gallagher missed out for Blackburn during the week, and joined many others in doing so, such as Lewis Holtby. However, these injuries weren’t as badly felt as they could have been.

Charlton will be especially keen to back up their shock win now they’re back at The Valley on Saturday. Blackburn are certainly a side that they will harbour ambitions of defeating, and a draw will naturally feel like two points lost, regardless of whatever form Blackburn are in. The Addicks have not won back-to-back games since all the way back in August however, so recent history is probably against them changing that.

The issue with Blackburn is that they’re generally quite a ‘streaky’ team, which is something pointing in the direction of Bristol City quite a lot of the time, too. By that, it essentially means they’re whilst they’re put together unbeaten runs, they can also go just as long without winning, almost at any given moment. They won four in a row in November/December, and then followed up that winning once in eight. They’re not necessarily the most reliable from a betting perspective.

Whilst midweek saw plenty of tight, low-scoring affairs, I do anticipate more of the opposite on the weekend card. I’m happy to place this game within that category and so Over 2.5 Goals will be the recommended play. Goals have normally followed Charlton this season, with 20 of their 32 league clashes seeing at least three goals, including four of their last five at home in Championship action. Tuesday was a fairly rare clean sheet moment for Blackburn, plus they rarely fail to score so this is the sort of game where both should have their moments in front of goal.

Whilst Charlton did win at Forest, they achieved it by not necessarily playing their usual style of play. They won’t be so defensive at home to Blackburn, and this really should open up the match. Blackburn are also not the sort of side where Tony Mowbray sets them up to just sit back. When they have momentum they can be tough to deny, and they’ve scored in each of their last ten away, and only failed to do so twice on the road all season long.

The guy who hit me does not have an ample amount of insurance to cover my injuries. They are offering me the policy limits to settle. My own uninsured or uninsured motorist has been given enough documentation to know that my additional insurance will come into play. My decent into meth addiction- part 1

I was always the “good girl” as a child and all through high school. I met my husband when I was 16 years old in 1987. We dated all through out high school and college. We got married in March of 1994. Had our first and only child the following year.

My husband’s family had several alcoholic’s and addict’s, but not him. He saw how it destroyed their lives and he was determined to be different. His sister who is at least 12 years younger than he has had a heroin addiction since she was 14.

As the years went by his health began to deteriorate rapidly. He had found out about 3 years after our son was born that he was diabetic. He disregarded what his doctor, family and I tried to tell him. He ate whatever he wanted whenever and refused to take his prescribed oral meds for it. About 6 years ago he got a horribly bad infection in his right foot that resulted in his big toe being amputated. He finally saw the light and realized that this was serious business and he became compliant with taking insulin as the pills no longer worked.

His health continued to decline due to the damage that all those years of not caring for himself had done. He had osteoporosis, arthritis, nerve damage in his feet and hands. He also had nerve damage to his digestive system as well. He was unable to eat most days without becoming horribly sick and vomiting. He was in pain constantly. He was no longer able to work so he applied for disability which he never received. He became very depressed and dispontant until one day while I was away at work he committed suicide by taking an overdose of several of his meds. I had never in my entire life experienced that kind of emotional pain. We had been together for so long. He was my soulmate. I saw my doctor because I became so depressed that I could hardly function. I had a son to finish raising and a job to do. He prescribed an antidepressant. I took it for about a month with no improvement. I began to feel that something else had to be done or my son would lose another parent to suicide. A few months before my husband passed, his sister came to stay with us temporarily until she could get on her feet as her husband had just went to prison for making and selling meth. After she had been their about a week, she invited a friend to come over. In walks the most charming, charismatic, good looking guy. She introduces us to him ( from now on I'm going to just refer to him as Peter Pan). He spent all afternoon and well into the evening with us. The later it got I began to wonder when he was going to leave. Finally, my SIL told us that Peter had just been evicted from his place because he was no longer going to cover for his landlord who was cheating on his wife. Peter then asked if he could stay a few nights until he could make other arrangements. He seemed like a nice guy so my husband said yes. Over the next few days he continued to be very polite and respectful. Helping with chores around the house that my husband was unable to do like now the lawn, wash the cars,etc. It did become very apparent though that he had a severe drinking problem. He would drink the largest bottle of E&J bourbon that was sold at the liquor store everyday. After about 4 days, he asked us if he paid us a certain amount every month could he stay longer. We both agreed. The more time I spend with him the more I liked him until one day I realized that I had fallen for him. I was spending more time with him than I was my sick disabled husband. I began to stay up late with him drinking, talking and flirting. I was so taken back that this handsome, charming man was giving me all this attention. My husband saw it too but never said anything about it. Peter had had a very serious illness in 2012 when he had to start having daily dialysis treatments for about 2 years. After 2 years, his kidneys had repaired themselves to the point that he no longer needed them. The shunt he had to access his artery had been left in in case it was needed in the future. As a result, he was placed on permanent disability and received a check every month. He handed over his complete check to me for 2 months. He also began to care for my husband while I worked 12 hour shifts as a nurse at a local hospital. It was not an easy job for him though because my husband had gotten to the point to where he had bathroom accidents(both kinds), frequent falls and basically could not do anything for himself anymore other than eat and use the TV remote. The following month was August. My SIL and Peter had found them a place to live so they left our home. After my husbands death, it was just my son and I left in that house filled with 20+ years of memories. I was severely depressed. My son was never home because he was 19 years old and had a life of his own. One evening I received a phone call from Peter. He was upset and crying. He told me that he and my SIL had had a big fight and that the neighbors had called the police. He asked if I would come get him so that he could avoid being arrested. I told him yes and picked him up. Later that next day he said "D, I want to come back home. This is home to me. Not that other place. And I know, B (my SIL) and I are not going to be able to get along and live together. I told him without really thinking about it that of course he could come back. That evening when I told my son about it, he was not happy about it at all. He felt that it was too soon after his dad's death for another man to be moving in even if we were only friends. I of course defended my decision and stuck to it. Fast forward until the end of September. Peter was still at the house, my son had seemed to get over his initial reaction to it and I became more and more depressed. Also, Peter gave me no money when he got his check. When I walked in the door from work one evening, I saw him with a rig/point and he was moving it towards the area of his arm where his shunt was. I had caught him red handed fixing to shoot up something. Imagine my shock and surprise. I asked him " what the hell do are you fixing to do in my house?" He had put the rig and a little bag of something into his pocket very quick. He told me to please calm down and that he was sorry. He then proceeded to tell me that he had been using crystal meth or ice as he called it for several years. I was stunned! This shit is what my brother-in-law just went to prison for! Other than that I knew nothing about the drug. I had always been so nieve and had been protected from stuff like that all my life either by my parents or by my husband. He started to cry and tell me how ashamed he was of it but that he had to have it everyday just like he did his alcohol or he would become sick. I told him that I didn't approve of it but if he had to have it, he had to go out to the garage to do it. I didn't want it in my house or around my son. He agreed and a few times a day he would make a trip out to the garage. About a week later, as I was coming home from work one evening I began thinking about driving my car off of a bridge or into a transfer truck. I was hurting so much. I just wanted it to end. I didn't though because I had another thought. Soon after I got home, Peter said " D, can I ask you something?" I said of course. He said "is there anyway that you could let me borrow some money until I get my check in 2 weeks?" I asked him what he needed it for. He told me that he had already spent his Sept check on alcohol and dope. Also said that he really didn't feel right about asking me but that he knew if he didn't, he would end up becoming very sick due to withdrawal. I didn't want to see him go through that so I told him " yes, on one condition ." I told him about how much I was hurting and about the thoughts that I had had on the way home. And about how the meds from the Dr weren't helping. He said that he could tell that I was hurting and had not been my usual self. I then told him the condition on borrowing the money was that I wanted to try it. That I just wanted to be numb and not feel anything. He said "No D. You don't want to go down that road. It changes people, especially females. I've seen so many girl's lives destroyed by it." I told him "Well, then you're not getting the money." He asked if I was sure about this and I firmly told him yes. He said "Let me make a few phone calls." A few minutes later he said "okay, it's on its way. Let's go get some money out of the ATM." He knew I never had that much cash on me. I asked how much and he said $100 for what I'm getting tonight and then he told me how much he thought he would need until he got his check-$500. I was floored by the amount but I said okay. About an hour later, a car pulled up in my driveway and turned out it's lights. Peter told me to please just stay in the house, he didn't want this person to see me and vice versa for my own safety. I said okay.

Sunday Summary // 08.01.2017

Welcome to another Sunday Summary post with me. It’s been a busy beginning of the month and I’m exhausted now. I’m even writing this late on Saturday. I mean, it’s dark outside! I’ve just not had a chance to sit down today and I’ve still got things to do.

I returned to work again this year and everyone was back in, deflated because the holidays had ended once more. We had a new starter on our team, though. Yes, another one. She seems really lovely. She’s quiet, but she is picking up things quite quickly and she’s powering through the work even if she needs help completing everything. It’s nice to have someone new on the team. I haven’t spoken to her too much but I think that’s both my wariness of new people (also known as shyness) and her being a bit reserved as well. I’ll keep my fingers crossed she lasts more than a couple of months.

Returning to work isn’t what has had me busy, though. It’s the fact that it’s my supervisor’s birthday on Monday and we’ve had to sort a present and card for her. She is not the easiest person to buy for, she is basically awkward to think of a single gift for her. We settled on getting some photos printed of her daughter’s wedding as that happened back in November and she has been going on about wanting to put an album together (which will take her about a year) so I’ve put together a small photo album (well, I’ve still got to put it together, but it’s on the list) with a few photos someone else we work with had available. I’ve also printed off a bigger picture of her daughter and her grandson from the wedding, which I’ve put in a nice frame. I’m hoping she’ll like it but who knows? That gift planning is actually why I’ve had such a hectic Saturday as I’ve not had time to sort anything until the weekend so I’ve had to leave the house early to get everything bought and it was awful.

So, that is my hectic week and we’re having a family dinner Sunday so I doubt I’ll have a relaxing day Sunday, either. I just want to curl up with a good book.

I have been enjoying my bullet journal for 2017, though. I’ve not used a couple of days because of my hectic schedule but I’ve been trying to use it regularly. I’ve got a few collection pages going, I’m essentially using the monthly page to remind me when I’ve got blog posts scheduled when I have birthdays and any plans on certain days. Then I have no weekly log that some folks have, instead I’m just listing my tasks for the day which is a cross between a diary and a to-do list for me. Then I have lots of lists going on. No photos yet but I’ll include some photos soon. I’m liking it so far, it gives me an excuse to invest in more stationery anyway.

What I’ve Been Reading

I feel like all week I’ve been juggling books. I’ve got ARCs I need to read, library books to finish before they’re overdue and then books I want to read from own shelves. I’m drowning in a sea of books yet I continually want more. I have a post about that brewing in my brain.

Anyway, I began the year reading Anna Kendrick’s book, Scrappy Little Nobody and I really enjoyed it. There is something I love about a good celebrity biography. I don’t read them often but I always seem to enjoy them and that was no different. At the same time, I’ve been reading Wayfarer because that cliffhanger in Passenger was crazy… the only problem is I’ve got book amnesia about major plot points so the beginning was a bit confusing. I’m a quarter of the way through and I think I remember what’s happening. Then I’ve started a read-along with Kaja and Danya as we all got approved for Ready Set Rogue. It’s a fun historical romance and so far I’m enjoying it. I’ll probably be finishing off the agreed chapters when you’re reading this. Finally, I began reading The Chemist. I’m due to return it on Saturday along with Ancillary Justice. Whilst I’m sure I’ll be able to renew Ancillary Justice the reservation list for The Chemist is long so I need to read it otherwise I’ll have to return it unread as they won’t let me renew. It’s decent so far, the usual thriller antics. I’m not far enough in to say more.

New To Me

I’m sure you all saw my reading goals post for this year and one of them was spending no more than £20 a month… I’m on £12.98. One Snowy Night was bought with my gift card and the Paula Weston books are ones I’ve already read (and have on Kindle) but I treated myself as they came to under £9 and I bought them at the end of December. As for Holding Up The Universe and A Promise of Fire, I made the fatal error of going into Waterstones… I came out with books.

And here are my ARCs for the beginning of the month. You already know about Ready Set Rogue so we won’t mention that. I requested Our Own Private Universe on impulse but it sounds seriously awesome so I’m glad to be reading that. The Hating Game is a book I requested months ago back when everyone was raving about it and thought I was never going to be approved for, I managed to get approved before the book was taken of Netgalley as it’s not actually being published in paperback until August in the UK. At the moment they just sell that giant version of the paperback which may have a name but all I know is it’s too pricy for me. And then there was One Wild Night which I got emailed about and figured I love romance, what is one more romance book for review?
