Johnny Depp’s NEW INTERVIEW!

Last saturday, August 14, The UK Times, released a new interview with Johnny for the Sunday Times section. It was realized sometime earlier this month, in London, probably on the same day he and Andrew Levitas were recording for the Q&A for the “Minamata” release in UK. This is Johnny’s first interview since the UK trials in London last year, and released three years after Johnny’s major interview for the British GQ Magazine. Here Johnny and Andrew Levitas speaks about “Minamata”, his future as actor and a thing or two about his personal life, although he cannot talk about the court case.

“I’M BEING BOYCOTTED BY HOLLYWOOD”

Johnny Depp has a new film out this week. In the opening scene his character, the real-life photographer W Eugene Smith, says, “I’m done. I’m tired. My body is older than I am. I’m always in goddam pain. I can’t trust my f***ing dick any more. Constantly in a foul mood. Even the drugs bore me.”

I ask Depp if Smith’s despair resonated with him. Depp stops. Rocks back and forth. “That’s interesting,” he replies with painful hesitation.

“I didn’t approach playing Smith in that way… Although you bring your toolbox to work and use what is available. Having experienced...” He stops again. Depp takes any questions that might refer to his calamitous libel case last year slowly, in a mumbly, croaking drawl. “A surreal five years…”

In the film Smith needs to revive his reputation. In real life Depp’s task is even more daunting. Thanks to the judgment, everyone can call him a “wife-beater”. Now he must convince a Hollywood still convulsed by #MeToo that he’s not toxic — and that any attempt to rebuild his career is a risk worth taking. This is Depp’s first interview since the case.

We are speaking over Zoom, Depp in his London home, in front of a gold-framed painting. The 58-year-old is wearing a lot of clothes. Earrings. Floppy hat. Sunglasses. Bandana. Scarf. Checked shirt over a T-shirt with an indiscernible slogan. If you saw him on the Tube*, you might think he was off to work at the London Dungeon*, to play most of the characters.

PS. For those who are not familiar with British words: * Tube = British slang for London Underground, the subway trains. * London Dungeon = is a walk-through experience that recreates scenes from London's scary history in a mixture of live actors, special effects and rides.

Depp resumes, talking in broken sentences about the new film, Minamata, in which Smith, via Life magazine, exposes the brutal mercury poisoning of Japanese villagers in the early 1970s.

“How do we do this?” he asks rhetorically, meaning how to speak about the elephant in the Zoom. “Well, there’s no way one can’t recognise the absurdity of the mathematics.” He grins. “If you know what I mean?” No. “Absurdity of media mathematics.” He talks in riddles. “Whatever I’ve gone through, I’ve gone through. But, ultimately, this particular arena of my life has been so absurd...”

He trails off again. He is holding a big brown roll-up of some sort. “What the people in Minamata dealt with? People who suffered with Covid? A lot of people lost lives. Children sick...Ill. Ultimately, in answer to your question? Yeah, you use what you’ve got. But what I’ve been through? That’s like getting scratched by a kitten. Comparatively.”

Last July, I went to the High Court in London to watch Depp on another screen — a video from the socially distanced court where the Hollywood star was losing a libel action against The Sun after it called him a “wife-beater”. It was the grottiest showbiz trial of the century. There were photos of the actor passed out in a foetal slump, socks on show. One lengthy exchange involved faeces. Another urination, inside or outside a house, after a violent night with his ex-wife Amber Heard.

This had all been going on for a while. In 2016 Heard applied for a temporary restraining order against him. The couple had long endured a narcotic, booze-filled, childish relationship, but that does not matter — 12 incidents levelled against Depp were proved, said the judge, and abuse is abuse, regardless of how badly they both behaved. Depp wanted to appeal, but the court said no. Next April in the US he has a $50 million defamation case against Heard relating to an opinion piece she wrote about being the victim of domestic abuse. It may be his last roll of the dice.

In the 1990s Depp was a sensitive heart-throb. Cooler than DiCaprio, edgier than Pitt. In this past year he has been stripped of his status and dignity. On day three of the trial Sasha Wass QC, representing The Sun, asked Depp about daubing a penis on a painting. He could not remember. “That would be quite a big thing, painting a penis on a picture?” Wass asked. “Quite a big thing?” Depp asked.

It was a well-delivered line, but Depp was on show. Performing. Now he is more timid, less lucid. His people say he cannot talk about the court case given the looming US trial, yet it hangs over everything. The director of Minamata, Andrew Levitas, is also on our call — as a pub trivia aside, Levitas is married to the Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins.

The two men clearly get on. “With regards to journalism, it was important for us to put across in the film the power of truth,” Levitas says. Depp nods. “The responsibility of journalists to look after citizens of the world. [Our film] coincided with the moment important publications had to put Raquel Welch on a cover to get enough eyeballs to sell enough ads in order to put something meaningful inside. A result of that is clickbait — it’s destroying the purpose of journalism,” Levitas continues.

“You said it beautifully,” says Depp, one of the world’s most pinned-up men, who built a career on magazine covers. “I couldn’t say it better than that.”

Last month Levitas wrote to MGM, which bought Minamata for the US market but decided not to release it. He accused MGM of being concerned that “the personal issues of an actor in the film could reflect negatively upon them”. Then the letter got really strong. Levitas accused MGM of failing in its “moral obligation” to release the film and said it needed to explain to the victims “why you think an actor’s personal life is more important than their dead children”. He then attached Smith’s photos of ghastly deformities that shocked the world 50 years ago.

“It’s important that the movie gets seen and supported,” Levitas says. “And if I get an inkling it’s not going to be, it’s my responsibility to say so. Where it goes from there? I don’t know. But we have responsibility to these victims . . .”

You can see why he’s passionate. The film is good. MGM bought the film because it is good. Depp is good too. He disappears into the role, far from his more recent pantomime parts. It’s being released worldwide, just not in the actor’s homeland.

Depp, who also produced the film, interrupts. “We looked these people in the eyeballs and promised we would not be exploitative. That the film would be respectful. I believe that we’ve kept our end of the bargain, but those who came in later should also maintain theirs.”

“Some films touch people,” he adds. “And this affects those in Minamata and people who experience similar things. And for anything…” He pauses, as he does. “For Hollywood’s boycott of, erm, me? One man, one actor in an unpleasant and messy situation, over the last number of years?” He trails off. “But, you know, I’m moving towards where I need to go to make all that…” Again, he trails off. “To bring things to light.”

The fact, as I think Depp knows, is that for his career, the court that matters is not one of law, but public opinion. On social media, where a lot of minds are made up, Depp’s good reputation will always outweigh the bad, thanks to his frequently blinkered fans.

Outside the High Court, as Heard arrived, I saw Natasha, 30, yell: “Get hit by a truck, Amber!” She is extreme, but the persistent way his fans demand that others think their idol is a saint shows a career revival will happen. After all, most filmgoers do not follow his private life at all. To them, he is Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands. To them, he is a star — and a star can take an awful lot of heat before it burns out.

“They have always been my employers,” Depp says of his fans. “They are all our employers. They buy tickets, merchandise. They made all of those studios rich, but they forgot that a long time ago. I certainly haven’t. I’m proud of these people, because of what they are trying to say, which is the truth. The truth they’re trying to get out since it doesn’t in more mainstream publications. It’s a long road that sometimes gets clunky. Sometimes just plain stupid. But they stayed on the ride with me and it’s for them I will fight. Always, to the end. Whatever it may be.”

Depp will talk like this for ever — about his “truth”. Minamata is the last film Depp has listed on the industry site IMDb, where actors usually have half a dozen in development. So, yes, fans of the actor can see Depp in a new role now — it is a return, but is it a relaunch? The film was finished in 2019, way before last year’s court case. Is that it? His last film? He thinks and looks off to his bookshelves, at biographies of Betjeman and Olivier.

“Er...no,” he says, eventually. “No. No. Actually, I look forward to the next few films I make to be my first films, in a way. Because once you’ve...Well, look. The way they wrote it in The Wizard of Oz is that when you see behind the curtain, it’s not him. When you see behind the curtain, there’s a whole lot of motherf***ers squished into one spot. All praying that you don’t look at them. And notice them.”

I would ask him to explain, but I am not sure he is an explainer. Watch this space, I guess, but he is already taking a first step back. After we speak, it is announced Depp is getting the coveted Donostia award at the San Sebastian Film Festival next month. Some people are just too famous to fail.

A/n. I had a awesome time writing this. Gang leader Youngbin I can imagine him omg hes like a perfect gang leader. I could have done better but the editing part made me cry so I didnt put in more writing like I wanted. It still okay to me Im a amateur writer after all. Hope you enjoy. ps I also out Pentagon as the other gang so I hope you noticed what I did there.

He was pure danger. Someone you shouldn't have ever gotten involved with in the first place.

You always wondered how you got caught by him. You didn't remember much of that night, bring home a handsome stranger. One night of intoxicating dancing that lead to you sleeping with him. Waking up to a mess a black hair with hickeys marked across your skin like petals.

Kim Youngbin. It was suppose to be a one night stand, but that was almost a year and a half ago and your still with him. A more personal relationship has developed with the gang leader.

Something you weren't proud of was getting sucked into a world of crime and money wasn't want you foreseen yourself.

Life just happens. Loving him just happened. Sitting in the empty condo you bundle yourself up in the warm blanket waiting for him to return. Youngbin has been gone for a few days while the only one to see you was little Chani updating you and going to school.

Suddenly a warm pair of lips met your head. You snapped up to see Youngbin standing behind you. "Spacing out much" your boyfriend deep chuckled, he made you smile. Looking up you locked eyes with his dark eyes. "Lots of thoughts on my mind" you smiled. Wrapping your blanket closer toward your body.

"Must be you didn't even hear the alarm" he said sliding next to you. He rolled his head against the sofa, He sighed putting on arm affectionately around you. You felt so safe in this the gang leader arms.

You noted on Youngbin normally flawless face a fresh scars, it made you assumed he recently had to do some dirty work. He still looked ever so handsome with deep black hair, long eyelashes and a small grin.

He gave a small smile noticing how your look changed "You're probably wondering how I got this" he said pointing to the fresh scar. You nodded touching his cheek the scar was fresh feeling.

"Just some business" he said, Youngbin always made that excuse its business but you didn't want for him to get hurt. "Those fucks got us good but we got them better" he said smirking a little.

"Are the boys okay" you asked him concerned. Youngbin gave a small dimple smile "Yeah nothing to serious" he said.

You sighed a breath of relief. After dating Youngbin his brothers of his gang were now becoming like your family also. Youngbin the leader but he was also like a big brother to mostly all of them, while the boys accepted you as more than just a hook up girl. Realizing that Youngbin actually held true affection for you.

"Promise me that you won’t risk to much" you said looking into his cute little droopy eyes. Those same eyes always held a sad light in them when you told him to stop. "I'm sorry" he said, you already knew he couldn't do that he had a obligation to protect his part of the city. While his brother gangs much larger than his owned the next two cities over.

"Its okay" you told your loving boyfriend running your hand down his neck, feeling him made you feel some comfort that he was alive here with you. "How about we go on a date tonight since I've been gone for a while" he said. Shaking your head yes you let out a smile.

Youngbin grinned leaning down to give you a swift kiss. His affectionate side was showing. Even though he was a scary gang leader his heart was so soft. He loved touching and affectionate kisses.

Suddenly his phone rang. He sighed, rolling his eyes. He left the comfortable position picking it up leaving the comfortable position next to you. He stepped out for a second "Sorry Y/n I have to meet Younghwa for a report" he said grabbing his jacket.

"Is the date still on" you asked leaning over to see him exit "Of course I'll text you the place" he yelled from the front door. "I love you" you said watching him leave again. Youngbin opened the door a small smile on his lips "I love you more" he said winking, leaving quickly.

You sighed alone again. The alarm confirmed that door was locked once again. You sighed looking back out the city. Excited for your date and also still missing Youngbin

You smiled at your buy. Knowing you were going a nice date tonight you decided to buy a dress that would wow Youngbin. Walking down the side streets of the city. You felt lighter than air as you enjoyed the day.

The streets were emptying a little as you got closer towards Youngbins condo. Going through the back you sighed from the long walk. You turned into the side street for a quicker short cut. Suddenly you felt something cold press against your head and someone jerk your arm.

"Please be quiet or I'll have to put a bullet into your head" he said. You went ridged at the person. "Now walk calmly to the car in front of you" he said you gulped as he grabbed your arm keeping you into a lock.

"Keep quiet and no one gets hurt" he said.

It must had been at least 5 hours since you have been kidnapped. You had been blind folded after you were thrown in the car. The drive was long so you guessed you were already outside your city and into a new one. You cried for a while, thought of death and of Youngbin sitting alone in the restaurant.

Your legs tied with tight rope while your hands twisted behind your back and were strapped together. In your mind you were freaking out you already cried a few times thinking what was going to happen to you.

You could hear people talk from behind you. "Sir is it time to call" a deep voice pipped up. You could tell you were in a warehouse. Maybe near the sea since you could hear waves around you in the distance.

The blindfold was ripped from your face to come eye level with a guy. He had short brown hair and a twisted smirk on his face.

"Lets start with introductions I'm Hui" he said grinned he stood. You stayed silent staring him down. "I said introductions" he said with a sigh pulling a gun out his strap, cocking back the gun as he lazily pointed it at you. You stared down the barrel seeing the glossy copper bullet. Your eyes widen and heart paced seeing the deadly weapon.

"I'm Y/n" you mumbled breaking eye contact with him, as tears filled your eyes once again. Wanting to feel strong but you weren't."You're Youngbin's girl aren't you" he asked. You gulped at this point realizing this wasn't really about you it was about Youngbin. "Yes" you mumbled in a defeated tone.

"We already knew that just wanted to hear it from your mouth" he laughed a little. He held your cellphone scrolling through it. "Aw look guys her background is Youngbin" he said a muffled laugh could be heard. He showed your favorite picture of him smiling wide. Some of the guys laughed at the picture.

"Okay hun I'm going to call him" he said. "Do you want me say anything specific to him" you asked quietly.

"No just say your last good byes" he said smirking. Your hear dropped at his words. Feeling bile from not eating rising up your throat. Your mind buzzed with thoughts of him taking your life. You thought about everyone your parents, your cat, and Youngbin and his boys. Not seeing them ever again would be so painful. You'll be dead so you couldn't really fell that pain. It would all just be inflicted on those you love.

He clicked a few buttons and then gave it to a tall guy and he pressed it again my ear. The dial tone was so long you were scared he wouldn't pick up for a second.

"Hello Y/n where are you I've been trying to pick call for for two hours" Youngbin voice said over the phone. "Youngbin" you said but he ignore you and kept talking "I was sitting in the restaurant for hours alone" he said angry.

“Youngbin just listen to me" you said sniffing up the coming tears. "Youngbin whatever you do don't come after me, don't risk your life" you said sniffing you looked over to see Hui watching you. "What the fuck do you mean" he asked almost yelling in the phone.

You gulped down some spit "What the fuck I mean I mean don't waste your time don't endanger the boys" you said tears slipping from your eyes. You sniffed them up wanting to wipe the tears away.

Youngbin kept talking, yelling and asking what you meant. "Are you done" Hui asked you. You looked up and him, choking out sob "I love you even more" you whispered. The phone was tossed it to Hui.

"Take her to the backroom" Hui said as he continued to talk on the phone. Feeling someone cut your legs free and push you into one of the warehouse rooms.

Youngbin clutched the phone hearing a males voice one ever so familiar. "Youngbin how are you" the voice over the phone said.

"Cut the formals what the fuck do you want" he said. Youngbin was so anxious he felt his stomach turn. The flowers bought hours before discard.

"Not much she says don't risk your life so I may kill her may not' Hui said. Youngbin gritted his teeth "You low mother fucker" he hissed.

Hui sighed gripping his gun "Money no I have money" he said. Hui sighed "Drugs maybe" he said. Hui sighed "no this is just revenge" he said.

Youngbin rolled his eyes his hand getting the ready to smash it into a wall. He knew what this was about, rights to the city. Every year Younghwa slowly took more land away from Eungkwan. As his young group under Younghwa grew it just meant that Pentagon had limited terrioty. Since the large company Cube was in a tail spin.

Rumors were that some of there gangs were leaving since they have become to weak to manage anymore.

"You can't change anything with doing this we already taken over majority of the city" Youngbin said.

"Fuck you I can and will take it over again" the voice yelled back at him. "We will slowly cut down you and Younghwa and then Hongki" he fiercely, the phone clicked ff. Youngbin sighed clutching his phone. His anxiety for what was happening to you was growing. He took a breath in trying to calm himself a bit.

He grabbed his phone and call the only person he could for help, Younghwa.

"Younghwa sir" he spoke clearly his voice was nervous as he called his leader and mentor. "Yes Youngbin" he said calmly. Youngbin sucked in some air "Those filthy fucks Pentagon took Y/n" he said. Needing advice from the experience leader was the only think he could think of right now.

"Why are you sitting here talking to me you love her get her" he said. Youngbin nodded "Yes sir" he said making another phone call to Inseong and Zuho.

You sighed trapped in a room the ropes tight on your wrist. Tears were spilling out your eyes the warm liquid sung your eyes. You were sick of crying but to afraid to try to escape.

The two men outside the room had guns with them and it room was bare with nothing but a old over head light. This was really happening any second Hui can come in here and take your life. You struggled in the ropes trying to loosen them but it didn’t work.

Its been about another hour and a half since you talked to Youngbin. You already missed him wanting to give a real goodbye. Tell him how much he means to you. How much he makes you smile until it hurts. How beautiful dangerous he was. Wanting to bundle your arms around him for a second time.

A bang filtered through the air. You cried out when you heard multiple shoots continue to glide in the warehouse "Y/n" someone said. You looked over at a small hole in the wall moved by a poster. It was Taeyang "Tae" you said eyes wide.

"Yeah Youngbin sent me to get you" he said coming over to untie you. "Youngbin" you repeated your boyfriend name. Taeyang took out his knife cutting the ropes "yeah and I heard what you said to him" he said.

"Telling him to leave you he could never do that" he said. Suddenly a guy came in pointing a gun at the both of you. Bullets could be heard from the front room still. The loud bullets were making you go deaf.

Taeyang quickly drew his gun. "Fuck" you heard Taeyang whisper grabbing your tied wrist and he pulled you behind him. He also grabbed something from his pocket.

"Kino" he said. "Taeyang" the guy said holding his glossy gun. "I would love to shoot you but I have a girl to deliver back" he said. Suddenly he threw it down, a sudden burst of gray smoke filled the room.

"Come on" he said pulling you to the fresh cut hole in the wall. The blond looked back and shot a few rounds behind himself as he came out with you.

Outside you were right you were by the sea. You almost puked seeing a cement mix looked like it was ready just for you.

Taeyang pulled you past the docks to a car. "How did Youngbin find me" you asked running with Taeyang. "Tracker he has it in everyone phone" he said.

"But don't think to much about it Youngbin is doing good right now" he said. Looking over you seen Youngbin holding his gun towards Hui head. Hui was on his knees, he looked bloody already. It also looked like Youngbin has been in a fight. With a split lip and some blood coming out of his forehead.

"I dont think you want to see this" Taeyang said pushing you into the car hiding the killing from you. Your heart thumped hard in your chest as a shot rung in the air.

You let out a shaky breath as tears filled your eyes once again. Only limited tears came out this time. You were safe in a car and not dead.

A few minutes later Youngbin opened the door of your side. His thin eyes looked over you then a small smirk graced his lips "You look good" he said you could see how visibly red his eyes were. Identical to yours.

Holding onto Youngbin you felt safe in the gang leaders arms once again. His fingers were running up and down your red wrist. Touching them slowly. Your wet hair pressed against his chest. It felt so familiar and nice.

You found out that Pentagon was mostly taken out, he did shoot Hui he might have killed him maybe not he didn't tell you. The boys were fine. You smiled as you seen them as you drove off from the warehouse. Counting them all making sure they were all alive and well. That made you smile especial.

"Your luck will run out one day bin" you said feeling his heart beat under your ear. "Not anytime soon" he responded his fingers massaged your back.

"Telling me not to save you made me kind of mad" Youngbin admitted. You sighed, It was so intimate being in his arms after the event. It was like he was washing the memories away with his touch.

"I didn't want you to get hurt" you whispered feeling almost dumb for trying to protect him. Youngbin sighed "Well never do that again and I'll forgive you" he hummed to you.

You nodded in his chest. Your legs draped across his thighs. You sighed in his touch "Youngbin" you said. He looked at you "yeah baby" he said softly.

"I'm tired" you said your eyes slowly falling close. "Its okay Ill be here to protect you" he said softly. You looked up one last time to see Youngbin handsome face till you fell asleep in his arms.

After the incident Youngbin became more protective while you became more aware of your area around you. It didn't matter the challenges that arouse you still had a hold on each other.

Last week, in a quirky weather situation, the street I live on got super-slick just long enough for my 2000 Toyota Camry to go into a 300' free-slide down the hill and crash into a curb and a tree. It was a one-car accident, no one was injured. The repairman can only give me a rough estimate at this time but he thinks it'd cost about $1500 to repair using old body parts, although he says it could cost more if he finds more damage as he goes along--in that case he thinks it might cost up to $2,000 to patch it up out of pocket. I asked him about the pros and cons of paying out of pocket vs. going through insurance in my particular case. He said that if I chose to go through insurance--which would mean getting a USAA adjuster out and all--that he was thinking it would probably cost $2500 to repair, maybe more if it turned out there was more damage that he could see at this time. But he pointed out that I'd have to pay the deductible (which I think is $500 for my car, not sure) and that my insurance rates would go up. But then you'd end up with a new-looking car. Today I was in car wreck. I was in a parking lot going straight and the other driver turned left in to my car. She has dented the whole left side of my car. I called the police but because it was in a parking lot they could not do much. An officer showed up because she refused to give me her proof insurance. About Tom death and casual fans who don't belive in his death. I wish they kill him in more convincent way: blown him away, put 20 bullets. That nobody have doubts he is dead. I wish it was Liz in morgue not Harold. We still don't know forwhat was 10 months gap. I don't want find out reading interviews. When I watch show normaly don't do that.

Hi friend. I agree with Jen, all of the casual fans I know do not believe in Tom’s death. True, most of them do not follow any of the actors or writers or TPTB in twitter or Facebook, so they do not know about 2 cakes, or even about Ryan Eggold being cast in another show as the lead. (a NBC’s show set in NYC)

Jen approaches Tom’s death from her perspective of character analysis, and she feels (I think I correctly interpret her feelings her but feel free to correct me Jen) cheated of a show that has hope because Liz has lost her dream. Red failed his daughter by not going to extreme measures to protect Tom.

In many ways The Blacklist is a show about families and love. A family love story.

One thing that is most unbelievable to me about those who hate Tom is that they treat Red as a god, someone whose words must be followed as gospel. And that is very funny, because I have strong suspicions that they never listen to their parents, and went out with the boy or girl they parents told them not to, smoke or injected what they were told not to, and had sex when and with whom their parents told them not to. Yet they expect Liz and Tom to blindly follow what Red tells them to do. Even when Red admits to Dembe that he does not know why he cannot be honest with Liz and accepts Dembe’s accusation that he is still lying to both Liz and Tom.

At the end the most difficult thing about parenthood, and I speak of this from a distance, as I myself am not a parent, but I am a daughter, so perhaps I have a less involved perspective, is letting go. Is accepting your child has grown up, and doing a leap of trust to treating them as adults. Red has made some headway: he tells Kate that Liz is who she is, and she has chosen to remain close to the criminal side, even as she is on the other side. He calls her Elizabeth, instead of Lizzy. And he has begun to treat her chosen life partner with a semblance of civility.

And perhaps the most difficult thing to do for a parent is to accept a child’s chosen partner. To accept that regardless of such acceptance, this person is now part of ones family. That person is never who the parent would have chosen, but it is not the parent’s choice. Once children are born, that link closes. Even if the in-law leaves, the child creates a bond for life.

The wise parent accept the choice and welcomes the person into the fold.

So we know that Red could have trusted Tom as being a family member. He could have shared the identity of the bones, or he could have at least told him why he needed to keep that secret.

I do not count:

Your curiosity is understandable. A mysterious suitcasebequeathed to you by a dying woman who insists that Elizabeth must be apprisedof its contents. But what if instead of happiness or closure,giving it to her has the opposite effect?

the “what if” there pretty much sell it as a clever turn to phrase that allows Red to be honest and avoid the truth. Like “the way Sam told the story”, and denying he is Liz’s father because Sam is, yet Liz is his daughter. being honest and being truthful are not the same thing.

The reasons Red gives for not trusting Tom, that he married Liz because he fell in love with her, are very shallow, coming from a man who in appearance fell in love with a soviet soy and had a child with her, carrying the affair for at least 5 years and in theory abandoned his wife and child, and betrayed his country,

But then again, Red has apparently only trusted fully Dembe. Not even Kate knew it all: She did not know that Red is Liz’s biological father and she did not know about Dom, which means she did not know Katarina’s real identity and possible her real relationship to Red.

At the end, it was precisely that which created the big problem, because Kate thought Red was acting above his rights as Liz’s protector, not as her father.

Red has trust issues, which work perfectly well for his endeavors, but which are not good for family matters. I suspect part of Red’s secret has to do with shame or fear, which @schadenfreudequeen ‘s excellent Jungian analysis confirmed.

Most of what Red saw and feared with Tom had less to do with Tom himself, that with his feelings and unresolved issues with Katarina. Even before we learned that Katarina was a soviet covert agent, a honeytrap, I already was suspecting that Red’s feeling about it were a lot more personal than care for Liz.

Tom was a walking, talking parallel to Katarina. The show went to great lengths to pummel these parallels:

Tom is assigned to Liz.

Tom falls in love with Liz and marries her

Tom makes believe his new employer that he did so as a job, masking his true feelings

Liz finds out and stays in the marriage, doing her own spying

Liz and Tom get back together, have Agnes.

Tom is drawn into the suitcase’s business by Mr. Kaplan. He is eventually killed.

Liz finds out when she recovers from her extensive injuries that Tom is dead.

She feels unable to be a parent, consumed by anger, wanting revenge, and worried about the wellbeing of her child. She places Agnes with Scottie.

In the midst of her recovery Liz has an incident that propels her forward, one in which she has to resort to extreme violence, and continues forward.

The show also has gone to great lengths to show a fundamental difference between Red and Liz: Liz believes in getting even, and then moving on. Red cannot: he functions in that respect as a binary being: he kills or he does not.

Betraying Red carries death, or in the case of people closest to him, banishment. Liz, in a trait she shares with her mother in law, believes in punishment appropriate to the offense, and moving on. She broke Tom’s thumb, shot him 3 times, and she imprisoned him in a filthy and cold boat for 4 months, exchanging blankets and medical attention for information, and then she was able to move on. Scottie had Solomon beat him up.

I kept him prisoner in the hull of a ship andtortured him for two months, so in my book we’re even.

Can the score be even now? Can this be over?

So, where am I going with all this?

To a point that I have tried to make many times. The parallels work even better if we ask ourselves three questions:

Why is Dom’s identity such a close guarded secret?

Why does Dom have NO pictures in his house?

Why does Red have no pictures anywhere of both the blond child and of Liz? It is one or the other.

The key to the show resides in those 3 questions. Because the real identity of Katarina, her real name are of paramount importance.

I think most people imagine that Katarina is not dead. So, we have 2 fundamental aspects in which Liz’s story deviates from Red’s:

Liz was married to Tom

Tom is dead

So, can I go back now to Cape May? In his hallucination, when forced to explain the second dish on the table, he says is his wife. When he is watching Liz as Bubble girl, we have a woman seen from the waist down. Why? Why is there no residence in which Red indulges by having pictures of the blond girl, the one in the swing and of Liz? He obviously cares about both, Jennifer and Liz? Red has stressed that biological links are unimportant, that is caring for a child that makes a father, so how could be so detached from Jennifer?

And when we start to think of Dom’s relationship to Red, it is inevitable to me that we arrive at a relationship that most of us know well: in-laws. Either we are an in-law, we grow up seeing our parents relate to their in-laws, we have in-laws. Forget about the noise of the plot and watch the performance. Ask a total stranger to watch Red and Dom scene and ask them what he think the relationship is.

And so, I suspect Red was married to Katarina. Red experienced the betrayal of a spouse but was not able to move forward. Red believes that Liz is playing house with Tom, when she had him on the boat. So, watch the scenes with Carla, again forgetting about the plot. Add that they cannot express any of their real feelings and issues because they are witness. They have a few moments alone that we see: in the cabin, when we start by Carla punching Red in the mouth.

Now: If Carla is one of Katarina’s many names, then she is most certainly alive, and Red knows where she is. And Red had prevented her from coming into Liz’s life via their agreement, something Liz calls unforgivable: keeping her from her mother.

And if so, we know that Red believed her dead at some point, in all he tells Ressler and Liz, and that Katarina thought he was dead. We have a Romeo and Juliet situation.

And so now we have Liz waking up to learn Tom is dead. Do we have a direct knowledge? No. It was Harold whom we see in the morgue. We have a tombstone that reads Keen Tom.

And we have a character who learned almost all of the big secret, if not all.

Tom may be alive, and kept away for various circumstances, But if he is, he will not come back until close to the end, because he learned it all.

So the question is, is The Blacklist close to the spy genre, in which almost inevitably romance and love does not bear well, the very traits that makes a spy good prevent them from that happy family life. Or will the show be a brilliant caper, in which the protagonists will eventually walk away with the treasure?

That I do not know.

But I would say you are correct in discarding anything you have not learned from watching the show as it aired.
