Halloween Video #3: Downtown (Amanda's Version) || The Boys
This song goes out to all my fellow travelers. But this next one is for you. All you lost souls racing down that long road to redemption, and all you sinners running from your past, but heading straight into that bitter darkness up ahead. And everyone or everything that is trying to cross from one place to the next. It's almost Halloween. So forget all your problems forget all your cares and go downtown. And if you happen to come across some lost soul, help them guide along. Who knows. It might be a mirror you are looking through.
Things will be great when you are….Downtown….

Okay so I saw Furiosa on memorial day and first of all, let me just say I totally loved it! I know it's not doing as well as FR (It definitely wasn't as good as Fury Road --but what movie is!!!) but I still had a great time watching it and will definitely be seeing it again.
That being said, the wig Anya wears for a third of the movie was KILLING ME. I'm sure this seems like the smallest thing to lots of people, but it totally just took me out of the story. Like the scene where she's hiding behind the gate and fire is blowing all around her .... And the dumbass wig doesn't catch on fire?????? Like brooooo whattttt?!
She's a grease monkey for crying out loud!!! Why would she have long hair free flowing at all??? She works with dangerous mechanical equipment and why, oh why, would she leave her hair down to be taken advantage of during a fight???
Idk man, but as someone who has experience working in glass blowing hot shops and metal shops, it just kind of drove me crazy! Rule #1 if you have long hair is to tie it up.
I also think it would've been such a cool story telling/world building opportunity to explore more styles like braids or buns!! Hairstyles are such an intimate and personal choice but also so affected by setting and climate, family and cultural history, and profession and I just feel like it was such a disservice to the character to make her another Hollywood bombshell pandering to the male gaze...
They could have done so many cool different hairstyles but noooooooo she had to have long flowing locks bcuz she is woman and woman must be gorgeous (even in the apocalypse) 🙃🙄😮‍💨

As much as everybody's justifiably railing on Chris Pratt for his acting, after watching the new trailer I honestly don't think Anya Taylor-Joy is a very good fit for Peach either. The problem isn't that they're bad actors, it's that they are not voice actors. When I hear Anya's or Chris's voice I don't picture Peach and Mario, I picture two regular adult people who wouldn't stand out in a coffee shop. Which isn't the point of animated movies and voice acting! ESPECIALLY with Mario! This is supposed to be a movie about cartoonish characters in a video game fantasy world saving the day, and their voices should fit with that theme. That's why Charles Martinet's Mario voice works so well, because it makes sense for what Mario is supposed to be. This trend of giving voice acting specific jobs to non-voice actors who have no experience with this kind of work is detrimental to animation and film! It is removing job opportunities from people who have spent their lives learning this craft and handing it over to a celebrity with no experience just because they're famous. The beauty of voice acting and animation in general is how you are completely creating a character. The whole point of voice acting is that you don't point to a character in a film and say, "hey, that's Chris Pratt" the point is that people will point to the charcater and go "oh, new character!" This movie is more and more frustrating to me the more I realize how much it feels like a money grab exclusively because of the casting. The animation, the music, and the effects are all completely perfect for a Mario movie, but so many of the acting choices feel like someone just rifled through a list of "100 most popular celebrities" and chose whoever was vaguely similar to "average white man voice" or "average white woman voice". No matter how popular these people are or how good they are at acting in front of a camera or on stage, they can not voice act.

my marauders fancast 😍
regulus: timmy obviously, but also dorian from the mischief productions. their jegulus films have me in a chokehold and i will not elaborate
sirius: conan gray. a shaggy haired twink that makes poppy gay music and regularly puts up dramatic shitposts on his spam tiktok?? of course it's sirius!!!
remus: ethan. ethan fully introduced me to the marauders after i started following him in like 2021, and now i cannot see anyone else as our wolf boy. P4PERBACK SUPREMACY!!!
peter: kit connor. HEAR ME OUT- i feel like kit would actually have so much fun playing the villain after so much time as a golden retriever. he would do an excellent job, you can't even deny it.
james: taylor zakhar perez. our tall, sweet, hispanic boy. put a pair of glasses on him and he's literally james.
lily: anya taylor-joy. i can't quite explain it, but she has such a regal face that provides such a diamond-in-the-rough vibe that is so lily.
mary: leah sava jeffries. SHES SUCH A QUEEN UGHHHHHH and she totally embodies mary's sweetness as well as her humor (good-naturedly teasing aryan and walker by calling them dumb or something similar)
marlene: maya hawke. i will not be explaining myself further.
dorcas: corinna brown. she is so funny and confident and DROP DEAD GORGEOUS TOO- she's just so dorcas
barty: dallas liu. DALLAS IS SO FINE BRO- and we already know he can play a zesty badass villain (thank you live-action avatar)
evan: omar rudberg. omar is so ridiculously gorgeous, but as Simon in Young Royals he does it in a quiet way, and i feel like that matches up with evan perfectly
pandora: beabadoobee. she has such a fairycore whimsical vibe and it totally matches pandora's energy. plus, i've headcannoned panda as Filipino for so long-

I saw a post explaining how Anya Taylor-Joy was the least convincing poor person in The Menu and I found that to be very interesting. This is a fraction of why I found the film to be good because not only is the premise both ridiculously implausible yet gripping but it’s the fact that Anya has the face of a woman who has never had to sit for a minimum wage job interview. Those eyes have never checked a food stamp card balance that bone structure was born into wealth through and through. Still enjoyed the movie tho.

Extra Extra Initial thoughts about Furiosa now in bullet point format Summary the movie made me want to write several essays about George Miller's brain, but also I wish somebody had rained him in just a little bit. Spoilers Ahead!
-It was super obvious that George Miller was trying to expand images that he couldn't show in the first (fourth?) movie. Speciallyyyyyyyyy the History Men, Miss Giddy in Fury Road was a character by herself, but now the archetype is well and truly established with a very specific cosplaying Saruman in the desert with tattoos vibe. Also showing in detail the other two citadels, showing the green place, showing the absolutely vile way that the wretched live, going in depth with the war boys million other things as well. I personally loved it and the picaresque sense it gave the movie.
-The citadel looked soooooo similar to Fury Road it was eerie, since everything else looked so different. But I think it made an important point about stagnation and how the men at the top will keep killing the world for as long as they possibly can only even changing their methods when forced to.
-There's a whole extra movie in the vault about how exactly the wives that were there ended up disappearing. how the politics of it changed from women desperately trying to stay there to have the high life to five women deeply committed to their own liberation (with little Cheedo being the only detractor in retrospect when she is spooked by the wider world). I feel like there is a whole lit fic novel in there about them reaching a breaking point. Maybe a situation where Joe throws out all of them and only keeps the very very best because I counted a whole 11 woman in that vault, maybe the Wives from Fury Road are kidnapped all since wretched woman would not be able to give birth without any deformities? Is Angharad that inspiring? I don't think it's the first one because the fact that woman that chose to be there then decided they didn't want to live as things is much more powerful
-the other extra movie is how exactly Furiosa befriended the wives since she actually didn't spend that much time in the vault itself. I did feel it weakened my favourite reading of Fury Road a little bit, but oh well that always happens with new instalments.
-Talking about Furiosa I'm actually so deeply sad that they casted Anya Taylor Joy for this, not even because she did a bad job, although I think Young Furiosa did a much better job, but because I have watched Queens Gambit so many times that her mere presence made me think about the movie in Doylist terms. She also just seems too Holywood? I don't know there was something about her face that made me think that she was CGIed it was too smooth. Did she even shave her head? I felt Furiosa would not have let it grow out in between escaping the vault and joining the war rig crew, and don't tell me she couldn't, everyone else had short hair Praetor Jack had a nice salon haircut. But the acting itself was good! I actually think it was an effects and direction issue.
-Since we are talking about casting Chris Hemsworth did work for me and I'm questioning if I'm having internalized misogyny about him working better than Taylor. Maybe it was the copious amounts of beard, or that he wasn't the main character but I could really inmerse myself in his character and his parallels to not Furiosa, he was a fucking lying piece of shit about that, but to Immortan Joe. Can't quite articulate waht it was exactly but I think it hit whatever Miller was trying to hit with him. Although my favourite casting was the people I didn't know from anywhere, specially Mary Jo Bassa and the Biker Crew. Burn down the media establishment where we even see actors outside of their characters, it ruins the movies.
-Most viscerally hated character from that movie was the organic mechanic though, instant visceral disgust coupled with professional disdain at this point. You are trying to tell me you couldn't even try to steam the bleeding of the man's throat? you are trying to tell me you are giving birth on the floor like a fucking amateur? he probably didn't even know the anatomy necessary to start trying to close a neck wound. And it's cannon now that he didn't create either Immortan Joe's or Rictus breathing apparatus, because they already had them before the prisoner exchange. Absolute charlatan, no this has nothing to do with me still being pissed as hell as to how he treated Angharad what are you talking about? There's one man in the movie that instantly made me think in Watsonian terms I hate his guts so much.
-And in general I felt the hypocrisy of even the men trying to be kind to Furiosa much more keenly in this movie, which is to say that I did like Praetorian Jack as the pinnacle of the archetypical road warrior and parallels to Max are very interesting and I adored how it created even more parallels to Furiosa and Max's character development in the two movies. But, I don't know, there's something about how he carried himself with Furiosa that rubs me the wrong way I just can't quite place how, might need a rewatch. Anyway Furiosa's crush on him that honestly seemed pretty unrequited from his part was fun, although I hope people don't make it the most important part of the movie (it honestly reminding me of Cheedo and the Dag, they even had a similar was it a stolen kiss moment? but I digress, the parallels between him and Max were much more interesting)
-Back to the topic of the wives there was a moment in the beggining when Mary Jobasa didn't kill the woman who claimed to be a mother and then she betrayed her, which both shows the kind nature of the green place, how it really doesn't work like that in the wasteland and how exactly the vuvalini might have been so diminished in numbers. But my favourite part about this scene was when she said "I'm not to blame" that had to be on purpose because I wanted to shout at the screen " THEN WHO KILLED THE WORLD?" so bad. The fate of the world really hinges on the simplest choices since without that little bit of snitching they just get to go home.
-Honestly just Mary Jo Bassa appreciation, she died on the third day but damn what impressive three days. If I write fic it's going to be about her and Furiosa's other mother, who made the movie pass my personal Bechdel Test with the true purpose of the original Bechdel test, to woman talk to each other in a way that let's you see the Lesbianism in their eyes.
-The scenery of the green place definitely deserves a mention as well, it felt so tiny! it felt so different from everything else of course, they didn't linger to preserve both the runtime and the feeling of it being a place almost from Furiosas's dreams. But from space it felt tiny! the space shot of the outback with the most minuscle amount of green made it feel so deeply vulnerable, and the presence of the crows everywhere made me genuinely emotional. It did clearly have enough of everything to survive and for people to thrive and be super healthy, but it seemed like every millimeter was planned to the last detail to be of the best use.
-Honestly I think the relationship between Furiosa and her mother was the beating heart of the movie, I definitely liked the first third more than anything, it felt the most like something new and fully immersed not only in the setting of Fury road but honestly more of Road Warrior in way?, I don't know closest I got to crying was at Mary's death and her little good girl when furiosa killed a man to protect their home was the cutest most uwu part of the movie. Not to mention revenge of her death is the entire point of the final confrontation.
-Also I have to mention Mr. Norton. Mr. Norton I'm free on saturday for tying up to a motorcycle, I'm sure everything you did was totally justified and also super hot, thank you for your dirty rabid woman duties it was fucking awesome how you shot a man and the quartered your former boss.
-Last comment before I forget, that scene where Jack was killed had impressive Hector vibes. Tied to the back of the chariot while hounds eat you and disfigure your corpse? More to add fuel to the fire of George Miller adoring archetypical images, and I do too no complaints, it was gut-wrenching when I realized what was going to happen. The Horde in general had a mixture of Greek Charioteers and Mongol horde I really loved it.
-Also their first fight scene together where they work seamlessly together and then Furiosa threatens his life? classic crazy wasteland, you and Max really were identical. It also cements my idea that the movie is Fury Road backwards, since Max threatened Furiosa's life first and then they seamlessly worked together. I'll have to find where all the beats parallel and how they fit together, to see if I'm right.
In Conclusion honestly excellent movie, I didn't leave with the deep emotions Fury Road made but how much it's making me think about it is deeply appreciated.

So I watched Furiosa
Furiosa Road: a Star Wars Story. It wasn't likely to live up to Fury Road, and it didn't. It would have been a tall order. While it was well worth paying to see in theaters, I was still a little disappointed; I'm going to explain why, without spoilers, and then after a very visible cut I'll comment on a few specific things in the movie.
First of all it felt long, but not two hours long so I guess it speaks to its quality. Going through the cast, everyone did a good job, although I wasn't blown away by the on screen chemistry of Anya Taylor-Joy and Tom Burke. More on that later. Chris Hemsworth as the overarching antagonist is this movie's standout performance, in a way that I'm somewhat conflicted about. More on that later too.
Overall it feels as if, after making Fury Road a trim and thrilling movie, the creatives behind it strung together all the piles of amazing ideas they had left on the cutting room floor into another complete movie, but not a very cohesive story with a beginning middle and end with enough connective tissue to captivate an audience. There's no shortage of props, costumes, characters, stunts and just straight up visuals, although the music is not up to the standards set by Fury Road. What's really missing is a tight knit script.
I'd say watch it if you like the franchise, otherwise I'd just wait for it to release on small screens.
Tumblr media
My biggest complaint with this movie is that it's split between two relationships, between Hemsworth as Dementus or Tom Burke as Jack with Furiosa, when really with how it's paced it could barely afford one. I am just completely confused by people saying Jack and Furiosa's relationship was the highlight of the movie, it was vague, bland, and Jack died before I could really care about him. All this relationship did was explain how Furiosa became so good at driving a war rig, despite the fact that by this point in the movie she'd fended for herself just fine, presumably using what she'd been taught by the vuvuzela tribe. Likewise Dementus as a character is extremely simple, in a good way, and is the a better representation of time passing in the movie than literal text onscreen telling you it's been fifteen years or some such. It's on the nose, but Chris Hemsworth is acting his heart out and it's always a joy to see him on screen. He's spiraling his way through the movie in a perfect exemple of what Furiosa must avoid becoming. So knowing that, the main plot should be about Furiosa having to lose her way home (the star map tattoo on her arm, which we know she lose by Fury Road) and choose to stay at the Citadel to kill him, setting up a bitter ending where she's gained nothing and is stuck killing more people instead of letting go of revenge and going home. Unfortunately Furiosa: the video game: the movie very much lives in the shadow of its 2015 sequel, and so the plot is split further to set that up. I've talked about how it hurts the pacing and how much screentime the other characters could have gotten, but I think it actually greatly diminished the ending. The end of Furiosa has her catch up to Dementus, bind him and beat him up, asking him to give her her childhood and mother back, only for Dementus to refuse to play along in anyway. He tells her that revenge achieves nothing, that he knows from personal experience and that she can kill him however she wants, that he doesn't particularly care. I don't do it justice it's a pretty good end to his arc this movie. Instead of Furiosa killing him there and then and validating that speech for a cohesive theme to the movie (keeping the hope stuff for Fury Road where it works), the history man voiceover tells us that although the true end of Dementus is disputed, Furiosa told him the truth, that she kept him alive with a peach tree growing out of his dick ?? And then she brings the peach to Immortan's wives in the Citadel, and then the credits are interspersed with shots from Fury Road. I can excuse the impossibility of keeping someone alive while a tree is growing on them for the sake of Mad Max movies very much being wasteland fairy tales, but I think directly linking Furiosa: Road One with Fury Road like that is both pointless and very hamfisted, on top of being a big disappointment when it comes to Dementus' character. Like the guy was clearly fucked up from losing his daughters just kill him and be done with it. Anyway yeah I don't think I'll rewatch this movie nearly as often as I rewatch Fury Road. Shoutout to the Octoboss though, he's the Most Valuable Sidecharacter of this movie.

I woke up this morning at around 5 AM, which is early but not shocking because I went to bed last night at about 7:30 because I decided I couldn't really take the world anymore yesterday. It's an easy retreat to just go to sleep but it never quite works out like I wanted because I wasted a day and eventually you have to wake up unless you're a Disney Princess. Though I guess they wake up at some point as well and then they are usually expected to marry whatever dude woke them up so it's not the sweet deal it sounds like at first. Anyway, I woke up early and laid there in the dark and got to watch my brain work myself into a pretty terrible mood as I just think about things without doing anything, somehow making everything worse in the process. It's really sort of astounding. This is a long way to talk about Anya Taylor Joy and Furiosa and I read something about how it wasn't that great of a time to her because she was very lonely in the role and I get it I guess. You hear sometimes about how stressful or trying certain parts are for actors and I think a lot of people eye roll it but if you are really doing your job I think it can be impossible not to feel the emotions you are conveying because you have to manifest them for your acting to feel anything but false. So I get the eye rolls but as someone who lives inside my own head and can just absolutely destroy a day by going over and over past conversations from months ago trying to unlock a puzzle that doesn't exist… I get it I guess? I am saying it seems like a thing that could fuck you up. I am sure there are chicken an egg type arguments here about who is drawn to acting and the desire to be front and center in everyone's attention but I am not interested in that today, I am just interested in how our own brains can take nothing and make it either good or bad. I don't have a conclusion I guess other than all that aside, Anya Taylor Joy continues to look great in the onslaught of press coverage she is getting right now so I am posting her. Today I want to fuck Anya Taylor Joy.

Furiosa A Mad Max Saga - spoiler-free review
So, today I went to movies with my Son to see this
Tumblr media
and the short version is: It's good. If you love this movie series you should see this.
I worried a bit, because as a pessimist I expect the worst and the whole prequel to Mad Max Fury Road is setting high expectations and setting the bar ridiculously high.
So I was glad it pulled a "Rogue One" by understanding what to do and being an actual god-damn movie in their own right and not just 'more franchise to you'.
It is fair to say Furiosa is not as full-on full throttle blast Fury Road was. But they are meant to be seen together.
Anya Taylor-Joy shines.
Tumblr media
She acts her heart out. Imperator Furiosa was played by Charlize Theron. Those are not "big boots to fill" nope. Those are massive tactical combat louboutinis. This is " sooo, would you play to young bad-aas Ellen Ripley without being Sigourney Weaver?" It really should not work. Oh and they will limit your lines.
Anya Taylor-Joy makes it look****ing easy.
Tumblr media
The rest of the cast is stellar, too. Apparently George Miller felt all this was playing movie making on easy mode so there is young Furiosa. And child actors are always a game of risk and utter disaster. Having a decent child actor is more rare than a decent musical. So, naturally they cast brilliantly with Alyla Browne.
Tumblr media
So, well done action drama in violent, hyper-brutal, take-no-prisoners ( except for slavery &torture as per Mad Max movies do) world needs villains as heroes, even broken anti-hero survivors are only as good as their opposition is heinous.
This is where one enters Chris Hemsworth, Thor and funny guy from MiB4 and Ghostbusters reboot. Too few have seen him as bad guy in awesome Bad Times at El Royale and so the miss the fact he revels in villain roles.
Tumblr media
But while he does great job this twisted hellscape is full of horrors.
the biggest are Immortan Joe
Tumblr media
Downright chilling and backed by WarBoys
Tumblr media
there is loads More, but remember: spoiler-free.
It is long, two and half hours, but it is good. Not quite as good as Fury Road, but them together? Oh man. As great as this is I could have stomached some more action and violence. My Son has seen only Fury Road and asked if I have the other movies in the series....before noting of course I have as my regular wear is few glued-on rat skulls short of Mad Max wear.
George Miller is a genius. This is not for everyone. That's how it should be. As fan since 1980s series from best to worst is Fury Road, tied second by wildly different Furiosa and Mad Max:Road Warrior only slightly over Mad Max and Thunderdome is far behind.
I wish someone gets the idea of Furiosa back to back with Fury Road in theatres.
The world is horrid and doomed and yet there is beauty.
Go. Witness This!
