Northern Vietnam had a famous folktale named Lady Xuân Hương, telling the story of her love with a gentleman named Tống Như Mai. The plot roughly talked about Như Mai falling for Xuân Hương, so he crossdressed to approach her. When Như Mai revealed his identity, the two grew closer and wedded. Like many other crossdressing storylines, this tale of Lady Xuân Hương was imbued with queerness.

When Như Mai decided to disguise himself, his servant immediately bought him a set of women’s clothing and said: “Young master, you have skin as fair, visage as gentle, and voice as soft as a lady, so I believe that once you are dressed in this attire, you will soon be acquainted with her. Young master, please try and put it on.”

Afterward, Như Mai quickly befriended Xuân Hương. The story reached its climax when Như Mai revealed the truth, but he only after Xuân Hương confessed her love: “Oh, if you were a boy, I would love you so!” Could it be that deep in her heart, Xuân Hương had already fallen in love with the one she still believed to be a woman? In modern terminology, could Xuân Hương be bisexual or pansexual?

According to researchers, this story was most likely about the famous poetess Hồ Xuân Hương (1772 – 1822). In history, she fell in love with a man named Mai Sơn Phủ. This gentleman was not listed in any history book, and only existed in Hồ Xuân Hương’s love poems. The final arc of the folktale also bore resemblances to Mai Sơn Phủ’s real life, as both couples had to be apart. However, the crossdressing arc was not recorded anywhere in her poems. If the folktale was indeed true, then did Hồ Xuân Hương fall for Mai Sơn Phủ, while under the impression that he was a woman?

Miền bắc có một tích truyện khá nổi tiếng tên Nàng Xuân Hương 娘春香, kể về tình yêu của nàng với chàng Như Mai họ Tống. Cốt truyện đại khái kể về Tống Như Mai 宋如枚 yêu thầm nàng Xuân Hương, bèn cải nữ trang để gần với nàng. Khi Như Mai lộ thân phận của mình, hai người trở thành một đôi và kết hôn. Như nhiều cốt truyện đảo trang khác, truyện Nàng Xuân Hương này thấm đẫm yếu tố bóng.

Khi Như Mai đã quyết định cải nữ trang, tiểu đồng của chàng liền sắm cho chủ một bộ áo xống phụ nữ và dặn rằng: “Tôi thấy công tử có nước da trắng trẻo, bộ mặt và giọng nói y như con gái, nên nghĩ rằng nếu công tử đóng bộ này vào thì không mấy chốc sẽ được làm quen với nàng. Công tử thử mặc vào cho tôi xem.”

Sau đó, Như Mai đã nhanh chóng kết được bạn với Xuân Hương. Mạch truyện đến đỉnh điểm khi Như Mai lộ ra sự thật, nhưng chàng chỉ làm thế khi Xuân Hương tỏ tình: “Ôi, nếu chị là con trai thì tôi phải lòng chị mất!” Phải chăng trong thâm tâm, nàng đã trót yêu một người mà bản thân vẫn nghĩ là nữ nhân? Trong thuật ngữ hiện đại thì nàng Xuân Hương có thể nào là song tính hoặc toàn tính? Theo các nhà nghiên cứu, câu chuyện này khả năng cao chính là nói về nữ thi sĩ lừng danh Hồ Xuân Hương 胡春香 (1772 – 1822). Trong lịch sử, bà đã yêu một nam nhân tên Mai Sơn Phủ 枚山甫. Chàng trai này không lưu danh trong sách sử, chỉ duy nhất tồn tại trong các bài thơ đậm tình của Hồ Xuân Hương. Mạch cuối truyện của Nàng Xuân Hương cũng có khá nhiều tương đồng với truyện tình với Mai Xuân Phủ, là cả hai cặp đều phải xa nhau. Tuy nhiên, mạch truyện về cải nữ trang không có tư liệu nào chứng minh được. Nếu có thật như trong truyện nhân gian, thì phải chăng Hồ Xuân Hương đã yêu Mai Sơn Phủ khi bà còn nghĩ chàng là giai nhân?

Chị ở Việt Nam thì không có cảm giác là mình sẽ phát triển thêm được, và nhất là cái cảm giác của việc mình thuộc về nơi này, kể cả ở Mỹ cũng không có cảm giác ấy, nên chị cứ đi thôi, để tìm xem đâu là nơi dành cho mình. Nhưng chị chọn đi Mỹ, thay vì ở lại Việt Nam, thì là vì chị không hợp với bố mẹ. Chị rất thương bố mẹ mình, nhưng cảm thấy không thể sống cùng được. Việt Nam giống như một nơi để về vậy. Em lúc nào cũng có thể về với Việt Nam được, còn Mỹ thì không.

Em có biết đến thứ gọi là "Giấc mơ Mỹ" không? Một khi em đã có cơ hội để đi Mỹ, thì chắc chắn em sẽ chọn đi thay vì ở lại, vì tính ra thì cũng đâu nhiều người có cơ hội như vậy mà phải không? mình đã có được thì mình phải thử luôn thôi. Cái "giấc mơ Mỹ" đấy nó luôn ám ảnh vào tâm trí mình. Và mình sẽ phải đi để tìm nó, đạt được nó. Nó không phải là thứ mà mình có thích hay không, có muốn hay không. Nó giống như một hạt giống, nảy mầm và sinh sôi trong mình, và mình không thể dừng cái quá trình đấy của nó lại được. Mặc dù cuộc sống ở Mỹ thì cũng chẳng như trong mơ lắm đâu. Mình được tự do, được tôn trọng những thứ riêng tư, kiểu như mình ăn mặc, trang điểm, đi lại ra sao cũng chẳng ai quan tâm, kiểu đánh giá này nọ ấy. Nhưng mà có quá nhiều thứ khác khiến cuộc sống thêm chật vật. Phân biệt chủng tộc, giá cả đắt đỏ, các cuổi nổ súng, vân vân và mây mây.

- Bao giờ thì chị phải đưa ra quyết định đi sang Mỹ làm?

I am that kind of person who can never decided upon anything. Actually right now, I am leaning toward going back to the States to find a job, but I still ask myself whether that is a good idea or not. I am still considering it ...

I don't think I can grow when I stay in Vietnam, especially the sense of belonging, which I did not feel like I had it in America, so I just keep on moving, to find where is the place I belong to. But I choose to go to America, instead of staying in Vietnam, mostly because I can't live with my parents. I love my parents, but I don't think I can share a roof with them. Vietnam is more like a retreat, you can always go back to Vietnam, but the same can't be said about America.

Do you know the thing people call "the American Dream"? When you have the chance to go to the States, you will always choose to go instead of staying, because it's not an opportunity available for everyone. If you have the chance you gotta seize it. "The American Dream" always haunted my mind. And I will have to keep going to achieve it. It's not something whether you like or want. It's like a seed, growing in you and you can't stop it. Although the life in America does not feel like a dream. I am free, have my privacy respected, like how you dress, make up, how you walk, nobody cares about that, everyone just minds their own business and does not judge you on that. But there are so many other things that make life so materialistic there. Racism, high living expense, the shootings, and many many other things.

- When do you have to make the final decision on going back to the States for work?

- Prolly now, I'll be flying there next week. But I haven't made any decisions still.

Uri Geller was an Israeli paratrooper who fought in the Six-Day War and dabbled in modeling and a small-time magician’s career before bursting onto the global oddity scene by apparently having access to a part of his brain that others didn’t. Inevitably, our conversation broached the topic of Geller’s talents. The inference was that his mental projection was being physically ‘captured’ on film, joining his mind with the matter on which he was focused.

I ultimately did report to the Spanish magnates what I had seen and what I suggested. They were more than interested. One of their scions promised to get back to me, and he did, but somewhere during the course of our days, the momentum to pursue such a project faded.

I did pay closer attention to Uri Geller in the next few years. The two displays I witnessed were clearly his top talents; I read accounts of similar feats from others who had met him. However, Geller wasn’t as successful when he attempted to expand his range. For instance, he bought a soccer team, Exeter, and said he’d keep his mind off the pitch. I guess he did, as they were relegated to a lower division under his chairmanship.

I have no idea about his talents beyond what I saw. I am convinced that what I witnessed was authentic. My lingering thought is what Geller’s displays to me could portend for the human condition. It’s a fact that 90% of our cerebrum’s utility is yet to be understood. Did all of us really have the powers of telekinesis and telepathy?

Those are deep thoughts, and I’m certainly open to further suggestions. In the meantime, if I ever come across shipping records which list a cargo of golden spoons lost at sea, I know who I’m going to call.

“Tiên Du Mountain: there was a huge rock with waves of lines like a chessboard. Legend has it that there was a fairy who played chess here in the past. Later, girls who collected firewood often came here to sleep with each other on this rock, so the rock fell and cracked.”

In the original text, 野合 was used, which meant to perform sexual intercourse in secret, to perform adultery, or to have an illegal marriage. This was one instance where such a term was used without any mention of a man. Could this mountain be, at some point in Vietnamese history, a sapphic haven?
