the implications of mr compress drive me insane because i can easily read it as in some way or another, he probably felt he failed his bloodline, or that he couldn't shoulder that responsibility--- but instead, he chose to believe in someone who COULD, aka tomura. he saw revolution in a person and it was him. he could've tried to be the star of that show, but he instead raised up someone he saw great potential in, only showing the hand he was dealt when it was the end for him. i have seen a few things that imply he chose to work with tomura because of afo, but i don't think that's true, i think if anything someone of his lineage would be hesitant to do that--- afo and harima don't exactly have matching ideals, they may be radical to a degree but there's a difference between genocide and justice, and the league tomura creates has an entirely different energy to the way afo himself runs things. also if it's any level of literal that atsuhiro is inherently drawn to justice and what is right, then that implies he instinctually knew tomura had the potential to take on the legacy he felt he failed to uphold, enough so that he'd risk his life for him numerous times--- first costing him an arm, and then costing him his freedom.
judging by his words on people choosing their own fates, be they heroes or villains, as well as speaking of people's agency/personhood, it makes you wonder if he felt trapped in his own destiny too. he seems like he probably rebelled a bit when he was younger given his failed days as a magician, which doesn't feel all that prestigious for someone with his history. i can imagine he also sees himself in tomura, since they are both the heirs to some of the most prolific villains of all time--- if anyone understands the pressure he is under, it's atsuhiro. not to mention, mha has an obsession with using hands as a metaphor for things (particularly, oppression or freedom/affection), and though it's only in the anime, one of the few shots we get of kid atsuhiro is with his father's hands on his shoulders, guiding him to fulfill his legacy as harima's descendant, a thing he doesn't necessarily have a say in. it feels like it mirrors similar shots with afo and tomura, granted i'm not saying atsuhiro's father was some kind of tyrant, just that the insinuation of that pressure is there. while other villains were made by their circumstances or decisions, it was in atsuhiro's blood to rebel against the suffocating system they were born into.
him and tomura both having hand quirks also makes me think of another way they're similar. compression is a quirk that can be as dangerous as it is useful. we see that it can effortlessly maim others, which begs the question, what was it like learning that quirk? surely not easy or without consequence. that takes a lot of skill and precision. i think because of that, atsuhiro also makes for someone who probably wouldn't be afraid of or disgusted by tomura's quirk, which adds a further level of intimacy to them. he doesn't just see someone who destroys everything around him--- he sees new beginnings, and has the knowledge that from death, comes life itself. considering, despite his obvious skills in such, he isn't very keen on being a thief or violent for that matter, i feel like he's one of the few people to see and understand that tomura is not just the aggression and expectations that were made by afo--- he is his own person.
it also strikes me as suspicious that even though they needed as many allies as possible, he was never broken out of prison while other much more difficult people were pursued--- in the past he spoke out against the mistreatment of tomura and i feel like afo likely knew he was a risk to keep around, in the event he could not fully control tomura. so for as useful as he was, and could be, he was a liability, a part of tomura's humanity that couldn't be risked, especially when spinner was still around.
Tumblr media
to close out, i don't think this was a last ditch effort, i think this is what he always knew to be his final act, he knew the curtain would fall with tomura, not him. tragically, he also probably knew none of them would realistically survive, but i think it was that fire that he saw in tomura--- a fire that could rival his great-great-grandfather--- that made him want to believe in him and drove him to do as much as he could. for all his theatrics and at times ridiculousness, his final act makes him feel like such a classically romantic character, someone willing to give everything up for the person he trusts and respects the most. i'll just never get over how utterly heart-wrenching it is to see atsuhiro's final panel be that wistful smile, still stuck in the same society that worships heroes.

#atsutomu#shigpress#shigapress#mr compress#mr. compress#atsuhiro sako#mha#sako atsuhiro#bnha#mister compress#boku no hero academia#my fanfics#my hero academia#flynn speaks#sometimes i go off about shigpress on twitter but this one was specially crafted for tumblr because of word limits#of course i've seen a few people analyze this in the past and say similar points but lmao#i'm honestly surprised the like fandom wiki for shig and his relationships includes plainly stating that atsuhiro felt like tomura could#take on the legacy of harima because it doesn't feel like anyone remembers that or it's just glossed over#while i have my qualms with how atsuhiro ended up; in a way it only makes sense. in his mind it was his mission to uplift tomura to victory#the others had their own reasons for their actions but atsuhiro's almost entirely revolve around believing in tomura to change society#which i guess for better or for worse parts of tomura's fate do that. but imagine how devastating it is to be atsuhiro#if he ever is let out of prison i can't imagine him being anything but a vigilante which imo i believe he was one prior to the league#just sad that even after all that hero society is still a game of money and theatrics. also there's the question of how are villains treate#like we already saw they're basically put into Hell incarnate and the system is rigged#i really would find it hard to believe it'd get any better. if anything the extreme decline of villains post-canon feels concerning#honestly they both make each other's stories more tragic#i would dare to tag this with the regular compress tags but this is mostly a character analysis directly regarding him with tomura#well actually fuck it i guess

I saw it in your tag game post that you're also fond of the Apollo-Heracles conflict 👀 for a myth that appears in only a couple of sources, it sure has a lot of presence in the vase paintings (no seriously, everytime I think I've seen the last of it, I find ten more)
SO do you have any favorites among the paintings that represent this story??
OMG OMG THIS ASK IS A GIFT. IT IS A GIFT THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR LETTING ME TALK ABOUT THIS
I also think it's extremely interesting that it's a story so popularly portrayed by vase paintings and in such a variety of ways!! It's certainly one of the stories that gets left out of written compilation of Heracles' legend a bit (which is a shame, I think it's a fantastic story) but Apollo had a very peculiar relationship with Heracles in general that I just kind of find amazing (and very, very funny).
Apollo is not a god with any legitimate grudge against Heracles, but he does argue with the mortal a bit like he argues with his favourite brothers 😂Part of why I love the story of Apollo and Heracles fighting over the tripod so much is that it is such a little brother thing for Heracles to be upset with the proclamation his elder brother has given him and so, he throws a great fit, taking up the chair and declaring that he'll just give himself a better prophecy! And Apollo, instead of being a marginally professional big brother, decides to fight him for it until their father has to break up their cat-fight. Like was that not just the plot of the Homeric Hymn to Hermes? Is this not exactly how Apollo treated Hermes when he was a child and now those two are inseparable? 💀
Because of this, my favourite vase paintings tend to be the ones that highlight the personal squabbling between Apollo and Heracles the most. There are some very elaborate ones that have the full host of them - Athena, Heracles, Apollo, Artemis, usually a dog and a doe, I've even seen a couple that had birds and plants etched on them, but the simplest ones that show Heracles about to bonk Apollo with his club out of frustration or depict Heracles nyooming away from Apollo while Apollo (presumably) yells curses about how he's going to fling Heracles head first into Tartarus for daring to take his things? Yeah, those are the premium big brother/little brother things I'm looking for.

#ginger answers asks#Thank you SO much for letting me talk about this even a little it always makes me smile#Despite their disputes - if you ask me Apollo was quite fond of Heracles#And I think a big part of why I ultimately come to that conclusion is that Apollo never hinders Heracles or withholds blessings from him#He simply calls him a bitch every time he sees him and then makes his life marginally more inconvenient#like any good older brother let's be so fr#It's extremely charming to see him so playful with a mortal he's not in love with/that is not his son#Other moments of Apollo teasing Heracles includes him trying to convince Artemis not to let Heracles catch her doe when he comes#to fulfill that particular labour (again he doesn't actually try to stop it he just puts up a bit of a fuss about it)#and perhaps another of my all time favourites#Personally luring Heracles into Admetus' house so Heracles can wrestle Thanatos while Apollo rescues Alcestis#I DO NOT KNOW WHY MORE PEOPLE DON'T TALK ABOUT THE LUNACY OF APOLLO'S ADMETUS/ALCESTIS PRESERVATION PLAN#He really said “No yeah I know a guy don't worry about Death Incarnate” and then Heracles shows up at Admetus' door like this is a sitcom#The laugh track that plays in my mind every time Admetus opens that door sees Heracles and then looks back at the disguised Apollo like#'HIM?? HERACLES?? Heracles who can break me in seven pieces with a thought Heracles???'#And Apollo just gives him a thumbs up and says “feed him well pookie <33”#Genuinely some of the funniest shit I have the pleasure of reading in greek myth#Another reason I don't think Apollo has any ill will against Heracles though is how Apollo reacts when Heracles#loses Hylas in the Argonautica#Or well some versions of the Argonautica - this is also a story that changes wildly depending on the source/compilation#But Apollo is incredibly sympathetic to Heracles' sorrow and kind of decides there and then that Heracles losing one love#should be the return of another and asks that Zeus let Heracles free Prometheus when he makes his descent into the underworld#Similarly it is Apollo who anoints Alcaeus/Alcides the name Heracles (also dependent on the myth source)#They just had a very fun relationship and it's a serious shame that it's not acknowledged more#apollo#heracles#greek mythology#(Also people do not talk about the fact that Apollo grappled with Heracles to a standstill enough actually)

always baffles me how people are actually man city fans. like— sport, and football especially, is so inherently about passion, and joy, and sticking with your team through thick and thin, and experiencing the highs and lows, and the commitment & emotion of supporting not just a team, and not just a club, but a community & a set of values. and then there are teams like city and real madrid and psg (sans ultras & some of the pre-oil money fans, in psg’s case) that are just. teams. that win stuff b/c of money and this, like, inherent artificiality that they all have. like, i get liking players/managers/whatever, and there’s nothing wrong w/ being a casual fan at all, but how can you possibly be a hardcore, serious, fucken man city fan? or madrid fan? what values are you supporting? incomprehensible, unregulated capitalism? what communities are you standing with, what’s the point? i just can’t understand it, what’s the appeal? winning? is that really all there is to it?

In Terms and Conditions Apply, what was Vox's reaction to realizing he had gained ownership of Al's soul? I kinda imagine he had a "LET'S FUCKING GOOOO" moment Also can I just say how much I love your writing? The way you can so smoothly integrate world building along with unique characterization is just. delicious. 5 stars, flawless, greater than great <3
I think that's the best way to describe it XD He was ecstatic, like a child on Christmas.
Just imagine Alastor passed out and bleeding on the floor (in the Family Guy death pose), Velvette is taking selfies with his corpse, Valentino is poking him with his cigarrette holder, and Vox is in the background going "LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOO"
That's basically what happened.
And thank you so much! I love world-building and I try to insert it as smoothly as possible into the story, (and characterization is a big thing for me) so I really, really appreciate hearing that! (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ

There are many reasons why Toon Link is the specialest boy out of all the Links, but I think it ultimately boils down to the fact that literally nobody wanted him to be a hero. The gods don't. Ganondorf certainly doesn't. Even Link himself very much does NOT want to be here. But he's here anyway, events conspired to make this his problem, so he's pulling an uno reverse card and making it everyone else's problem too. He's not special in any regard, he's literally just this random guy. And he also killed Ganondorf. Like. KILLED killed. And a giant evil squid god for good measure. And then probably helped found a country. Amazing.
In series about the Chosen One, it's the Unchosen Ones that really stand out, and I think it's kind of a shame that the Legend of Zelda series hasn't explored that concept more. ...Then again, if there were more Unchosen One Links it would diminish Toon Link's awesomeness, so maybe I shouldn't complain.

Incredible, delicious fic actually thank youuuu. Love a version of Dick that is fully aware of what a creep he is but this is the first thing he has actually wanted in a long time and has the compulsion to go after it no matter what
thank you! i actually wavered a lot on how to depict the situation, and particularly how much of Dick's pov to include. there's a lot of stuff happening in the background that I wasn't sure if I should include because on one hand, it broke the tension of the victim's POV (which is, to be fair, a really standard and obvious little mystery plot), but on the other, I thought it'd be worthwhile to explore Dick's perspective. In your POV, it seems pretty straightforward: what is happening and how it will end up, and how you doom yourself with every step you take. But in the little bits and pieces of Dick's POV that I wrote and then discarded, it wasn't quite so easy. He vacillated a lot. Tried to stop himself. How far could he go, really? To me, every step he took was another place to stop at. He had to steal the underwear off your hamper, so he wouldn't try to take it off your body. He could buy the drugs, but choose not to use them. He would jerk off listening to your gasping and splashing in the bathroom, but he wouldn't step in there. And then when he realizes he's in far too deep... well, he's already there, isn't he? Might as well put his whole foot in. I thought that was interesting, but ultimately too disruptive. I'm glad the motivation behind it did go through without his POV!

Opinions on Secret Level Mega Man?
If I have to be completely honest, I cannot say I have any real excitement for this iteration. Most of my past experiences with any film-based, streaming-service-based adaptation for any video games have not been good ones. And while creative freedom to make changes to a new adaptation is one thing, what I've come across so far feel like they miss the "core" of the source material, so it's as though I am not watching something from said series but something completely different with the same name.
Could I be too hard on a simple teaser? Maybe. But the last time I had huge hopes for something I liked, the people behind it seemed to think their changes were fixing problems that didn't exist.
Also I think that kid that may be the Mega Man in question looks like Lionsgate Pinocchio. It's giving too much "corporate-realistic" cartoon style that I'm not fond of.
