I was going down memory lane and the urge to draw these freaks again, came. Not fully satisfied with how they look but I personally think it’s a massive improvement from how I used to draw them

where anxiety belongs

tear tracks are hot. virgil learned this when he was 11. tear tracks are hot when he and thomas sit together in the feeling of not being good enough for anything, anyone. another project abandoned, another friend lost, another chance not taken.

it felt safer to abandon than it did to risk, and in the moment, virgil was sure he was doing the right thing but now he worries (and thomas worries) that he was wrong. maybe he wasn't doing the right thing. maybe he was wrong. maybe he was ruining their life and no one would ever be able to love him because he was unlovable and a coward and-

"hey now. that's enough of that."

morality doesn't really look at virgil. he never does. ever since virgil first starting going "dark", morality hasn't been able to look him in the eyes. comfort used to be for both him and thomas, but now virgil is scary, and so is best to be avoided.

morality coaxes thomas to hold the plush bear that reminded him of being a kid (before anxiety had started manifesting the way he did) and hold it close. he tells thomas a story about one of the many times that someone has loved and appreciated him. he helps Thomas feels better. puts a non-corporeal hand on his shoulder and reassures him that everything is going to be okay.

virgil used to get some of that comfort too, once upon a time. he feels the barest hints of it through the bond he has with thomas, and so even though he used to retreat when morality came, now he stays, hunkered down, holding onto that connection desperate for any kind of positive attention.

he's too young (they're both too young) to know the consequences of their action. they're both too young to know that ignoring him will only make him bitter, harsh, more powerful as his own resentment fuels his purpose. morality is too young to know that ignoring the dark side in the corner is just as unkind as the bully who'd caused the episode in the first place. but it's easy to say that some things are good and others are bad when you're 11. it's easy to say that dark things are best shoved into the shadows and forgotten about. it's easy to do this to him, to remus. to-

"this is very becoming. come along. we have so much time to waste."

janus puts one of his six hands on virgil's shoulder, but virgil shrugs him off.

"i'm fine."

they both know it's a lie, but he knows that deceit cares less about comforting virgil and more about getting him out of the light so that things look normal from the outside. virgil almost digs his heels in and stays just on principle, but he doesn't want to be here anymore anyway. morality is singing thomas a song that reminds him of the trip he took to the aquarium with his class last year (the best field trip ever) and virgil didn't want to be reminded that he was no longer worth consoling, just ignoring.

deceit pulls virgil into the dark, and he goes. because he wants to. because this is where he belongs. it's been made so clear to him that this is wear he belongs.
