okay so i know it's not at all meant to be this serious but i was thinking about that question "if bruce had to save only one of his kids who would he save" and how that situation would play out with each one of them but this is Specifically between him and dick. now i'm of the (surprisingly unpopular) opinion that bruce wayne is far too complicated of a man — and a father — to even consider picking any child let alone one of his OWN in such a situation but for the sake of technicalities and slightly ooc hypotheticals:

bruce looks over at every one of his kids, not quite meeting eyes but letting them know he sees them. he sees them so viscerally, he looks at their acceptance and something is eating away at him and he feels his heart bleed, filling his chest — and he does not look at dick. he can't. because he knows what sort of thundering disbelief might glare back at him for what he's about to do.

dick can see the way bruce can't even bring himself to look at him as he decides and that's all the confirmation he needs. maybe he can't speak so he's begging and praying to whatever might hear him not me not me bruce for once in your life don't pick me not me. or maybe he's ripping his throat raw begging and praying out loud "not me not me bruce for once in your life don't pick me not me."

bruce has managed to convince himself that every other time he has placed an unimaginable burden or responsibility on dick, that it was for the boys own good. that somewhere, in the pain and the loneliness that there is a lesson. that dick can be better (than bruce).

bruce knows that here, seeing dick's blue eyes ablaze and accusatory, hearing the painful scratch of his plees — that he is doing this for himself. that this choice, this burden, is entirely one out of bruce's selfish devotion to a son who was never quite his to keep. that after this, after what they're both about to lose, after what blame he will once again shift onto dick, he won't ever see his son again. but at least bruce had saved him, this once.
