Feed Them Death — Panopticism: Belong/Be Lost (I, Voidhanger)
Panopticism: Belong/Be Lost by FEED THEM DEATH
Some things change. Back in the late 1990s, the Italian musician who self-identifies as Void (he has never publicized his birth name) was a founding member and songwriter for Antropofagus, a band that purveyed brutal death metal—a subgenre which, unfortunately, just won’t go away. The band’s music was shitty. Their misogyny was repugnant. That was then.
This is now. Void is back. Thankfully he seems to have ditched the noxious romanticizing of violence and viscera. His one-man project Feed Them Death still trades in sonic extremities, but the smutty gore has given way to grind. And as is typical of grindcore, the songs express a politicized rage. Void channels his aggressions toward institutions now, rather than mindlessly drooling over damage inflicted on women’s bodies. One wishes the larger community of metal listeners and creators would follow suit as a collective. In any case, this new Feed Them Death LP is pretty good.
But we may do this record a disservice by simply labeling it grindcore. Album opener “Zoneless Confinement” features many of grindcore’s signal elements: breakneck rapidity; jackhammering repetition; heavy, burly, thudding riffs; growled and grunted vocals. The lyric sheet is helpful. Void utters, “We are words without synonyms or antonyms / Shouted to deaf ears that are only prone to label reading / And to the comforting caducity of all their replaceable truths.” It’s not immediately clear what Void means, but it’s a long, long way from inventorying the necrophile’s obsessions or the torturer’s prurient excitement. Still, there are some suggestive gestures in “Zoneless Confinement”: Void growls about “shouting to deaf ears” that are only interested in “labels.” That may apply to the various publics (hello) that will talk about the music. To what extent are we really listening?
“Scar?” certainly demands our attention. But it’s less a grindcore song than a muscular, more musically interesting variant of the death metal Void made in the 1990s. Behind the conventional riffing and spazzing out, there are some strange sounds—a Theremin wails, and when the growling and crunching relents for a spell, just beyond the song’s three-minute mark, the instrument’s eerie electronic keening moves into the song’s foreground. The record’s real surprise is “Prescience/Evokism III,” a six-minute collage of harsh noise, distortion and sudden bits of avant-garde string quartet music. Deep in the track, a voice interposes: It is Theodor Adorno (who also wrote the music for strings), warning us of the vapid charms of pop that seeks the cultural prestige of protest music, even as the music attains the industrial status of the “hit record.”
It’s always great to hear Adorno’s voice—and no one will imagine that Panopticism: Belong/Be Lost will ever be a hit record. One wonders what Adorno, who had rather mandarin musical tastes, would make of grindcore. Is it avant-garde? It’s also bemusing to hear from Adorno of all people on a record that claims to draw principal inspiration from the writing of Michel Foucault (as someone who finds Foucault’s work something less than productive, this reviewer will let you decide the extent to which Void captures the theoretical thrust of books like Discipline and Punish). Adorno and Foucault? Singing the same tune? Surely it’s interesting that a grindcore record should be asking the question.

Album Review: Antropofagus - Origin (Agonia Records)
Their lack of restraint only matched by their abilities to delight with their technical prowess.
Origin is Antropofagus’ long-awaited fourth studio album. The Italian brutal death metal quartet will have the album released via Agonia Records on October 28th, 2022. The album features guest appearances from Mike Montaguti (Electrocution), Matt Sotelo (Decrepit Birth) and Dallas Toler-Wade (Narcotic Wasteland, ex-Nile).
