We decided to go back; and then forward again.
After feeling lost in the projects process of last week, we checked again with our initial motivation and fascination towards this site and project.
Slide 1: We wanted to create a sports event for team sports that is not based on being in the „right“ team or the „wrong“ team. Where everything is focused and condensed on one point; on one game. We wanted to experiment and to find different spacial and structural solutions for a more over all collective team sports event. Having this in mind we looked back again at the Grümpelturniers in Switzerland and analyzed how they organize such events, what its needed and how they are presented in the community. In our impression Grümpelturniers are more than just a football game. They are important social events for gathering, exchanging and meeting new and old friends.
Slide 2: Our proposal for the context drawing. Here we want to show how the already existing Football Vereine and Grümpelturniers are located; and how they can be connected through our Stadium. Our focus was an on the left shore. On the one hand because it’s easyier connected and on the other hand this event may reinforce an own identity for the left shore.
Slide 3: Analyzing the site once more and checking the potential spaces for our Grßmpelturnier-Stadium, we decided to set it on the upper part of the Schiessanlage. The two large existing buildings, that form a charged space in-between caught our interest and we wanted to preserve this particular characteristic of the site. Thats why we are planing to situate the football fields and tribunes inside the existing terracing. To keep the experience of the event dense is important for us. Thats why we will leave the existing trees at the edges and let them form a green frame for the stadium. (Axonometry 1:500)
Slide 4: We placed the football fields inside the ground, emphazising the longlitude of the side.
Slide 5 and 6: Shows nicely our given topography and how we reacted to it. Our focus here was to state more precisely how the tribunes and football fields are set in the ground. Sections, 1:500
Slide 7: By reacting to the site we created to different type of tribunes: One type is of natural stone and is set in the ground of the slope. An extended slope, created by flatting the ground for the football fields. Those are the most intense places and the closest to the game. The other type is integrated into the existing buildings and appears more like a viewing point; over the event and the landscape beyond. Our structure proposal for the this building is that it will have a loggia like space on the first floor and at the same time provides the visitors with a roof on the ground floor. As the structure probably wasn’t designed to held more than ten people on the first floor we propose in our design that a wooden understructure will support the upper existing structure.
Slide 8: The bigger complex at the beginning of the site didn’t change a lot. We only took out the former uses of the Schiessverein, extend the openings of the windows, creating an extended loggia for the existing restaurant in the building. We imagine that during the event people from inside the restaurant can cheer up their teams and enjoy siting spaces with a better view.
Slide 9: This shows one of the smaller stone tribunes in the middle of the site. By choosing bigger and smaller stones we can create different possibilities for siting and participating in the game. We want to merge siting positions on the gras (as its’s typical for a classical Grümpelturnier) and siting postions on the stone; empathizing a more park like appearance.

On a spring’s day
What an opportunity to do yoga outside! As I go to the Albisgütli park, I already see my first students coming to the sportsfield, laying out their yogamats. We start with meditation. I close my eyes and I hear the wind rush, the birds sing and the children laugh, which are having fun playing football to the sportsfield next to us. Now that everything blooms, I can also smell the fresh forest air. Then I open my eyes, and I see the trees of green, the flowers too. The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky – is also on the faces of people jogging by. And I think to myself; What a wonderful world.
On a summer’s day
Like all modern couples Urs and Regula started to work out together. Once a week they go on the Uetliberg. First running up the hill, than running down the hill and finally they do one session Bodycombat. Urs is already dying.“This time I won’t be slower than my girlfriend“, thinks Urs after doing his tenth push-up and glimpsing to Regula’s shiny six pack. „Good job my friends! And now we do ten push-ups more!“ shouts the instructor from above.
Concept
We took a closer look on the already existing facilities and activities around the shooting range in Albisgütli. The space in front of the forest is already being used by joggers, for the vita parkour, cyclers… But also by cultural events, such as the Chilbi and the country music festival. That’s why we also see our task to provide the space with multifunctional uses; sports and cultural events (From football to dance festival). To set those topics in a harmonious relationship to each other we visioned the former shooting range as a type of park with various activities – depending on the season.
Material and structural thesis
The sites provides us with a variety of existing structures and materials. The structure that impresses us the most is the blue wooden/concrete structure on the top of the hill, facing the building of the (former) Schiessverein. The form of the building follows its very precise function. Even after changing the function we wanted to maintain the unique appearance of its former use and replenish it with an additional structure.
For us it was important that the additional structure doesn’t appear too much as an alien element, but follows the rhythmic appearance of the existing one. We set three characteristic principles that our additional structure has to follow to fit in: clear horizontal rhythm, clear vertical rhythm and persistent terracing downwards.
To place a sort of canopy over the roof-stage we decided to conduct its forces directly into the ground and not over the existing structure itself. We made this choice because we were afraid that the new single loads (even though it’s a light wooden structure) may be damaging to the existing one.
Furthermore we experimented with other structure principles for tribunes in the ground. Those follow the same typology of the idea of combining tribunes and stages. Here we stressed out the fact that the ground has to be flattened to be fitting for a proper sports field. By flattening it we have to partially take away some soil and this gives us the initial form for the tribunes.
Energythesis
We chose to make the structure out of timber. As a building material, timber is highly durable, recyclable and beautiful. The importance of wood is not only that it’s naturally occurring, it has very low embodied carbon – about as low as it gets for a building material. The proximity of the stadium’s structural elements to each other has also been determined to enable the seating terraces and floor slab to be made of timber. In most other stadiums, these elements are concrete or steel. Also, three quarters of the lifetime carbon impact of any stadium comes from its building materials (if the use is only for sports).
Next to the energy-efficient timber structure, our structures are also naturally cool in the summers. Since we flattened the ground to make the sportfields, it takes away a lot of soil and makes it a slight – underground construction. The resulting slope, where the sitting spots for the tribunes are, have a roof aswell, which holds the places cool.
