The Evolution of the Chaise Lounge

A vintage mid century modern lounge chair is one of the most classic pieces of furniture in the world; it first became popular in the French Renaissance around the 1600s. They were created for the Emperor Louis XIV and his court. The term, however, is much older; it actually comes from the French chaise lounges, which means a long, reclining chair in English. The antique varieties from the earlier and later periods of the French era have many other aliases as well: the petite chaise longue (which resembles an antique petite chair), the grand chaise longue (which is almost identical in size to the grand Chaise Lounge), the antique/regarded as the stately/ Royal Chaise Longue and the Russian Swayandaich (which are nearly identical to the antique/regarded as the royal chaise lounge).

As the name suggests, the main function of mid century chaise lounge is to recline; thus, the term "chaise longue" is also used to describe modern day comfort furniture such as recliners, sofas and couches. In modern terms, the term refers to any piece of furniture that can be reclined - whether it's a chair or a sofa. Chaise lounges have been in existence for centuries, though the term is relatively new. There are several theories on the origins of the word, but the most prevalent among experts is that the term was adopted from the French language during the French Revolution, when the royalty would often spend time in their massive, plush chaise lounges (the term was probably coined due to the fact that the lounges were covered in tapestry and velvet). The term has stuck ever since.

One of the biggest advantages of the chaise lounge is that is can be used as a couch or even a bed; in other words, it can act as both a couch and a bed at the same time! Due to its versatile nature, the chaise lounges of today are often seen as day beds, used by children as an extra sleeping area or by adults as a comfortable couch. They make great sofas and chairs too and are sometimes seen as being as high as a sofa or couch, making them easy to store. With modern furniture, chaise lounges are no longer just pieces of furniture; they are a part of the modern home.

Amara Speechley’s love of her Fitzroy apartment is immediately evident in the poetic way she describes its grounds. 

‘When you push through the security gate you’re immediately transported to some other place,’ says the strategist at Studio Round. ‘The gardens, particularly in the warmer months, abound with prairie-esque planters that are an ode to Piet Oudolf, and with the heritage facades hovering in the background, you really feel like you’ve stumbled upon your own little slice of Europe.’

Amara has lived here with her partner Cal Watson for over six years, including three since their son Vetiver was born.

The couple were initially unsure about the communal nature of the outdoor space, but have found this to be a real source of community. 

‘When we walked through the courtyard and saw how idyllic the gardens could be, and how removed we felt from everything that was happening around us, we just fell in love!’ says Amara. ‘All the residents here are independent, single women and have had their homes for over a decade… we were coming into a close-knit, warm community of neighbours in the truest sense.’ 

Cal is the director of Bespoke Landscapes, so his gardening design expertise has only added to the richness of the shared courtyard. It’s been challenging at times, due to the shaded aspects and abundance of concrete, but their desired ‘rambling, abundant feel’ has been achieved with dozens of overflowing pots.

‘Our planters are crammed and spilling with an array of whimsical grasses and florals that create a real sense of romance and wonder,’ Amara says. ‘We’ve also tried to bring larger, more established trees into the space to help with heat and make it feel more like an authentic garden.’ The couple have also trained roses, wisteria and vines to climb up surfaces, creating a sense of near abandon.

‘We’ve become quite deliberate in allowing the garden to do its own thing, and love watching surprise floral delights pop up throughout the seasons as different plants self seed, or we throw handfuls of random seedlings into the beds and just see what emerges,’ says Amara. 

Minor cosmetic renovations have been made to the unit’s interiors, to exude a natural and romantic energy. Meanwhile, a refined mix of vintage furniture pieces gives the home a distinctly nostalgic, inviting feel. The living room couch best encapsulates this style, with its bold ‘70s form and chocolate velvet.

‘Soft furnishings encourage the light to dance across rooms, art is positioned to create dialogue, furniture placements are intentional to ask each piece to reveal something about the other,’ says Amara. 

Amara and Cal are often asked how they manage to have such a well curated home with a toddler in tow, but aside from the occasional spill, they say it’s less challenging than one might expect. 

‘Vetiver is respectful of our things… he gets that just like he has some special toys that he loves and wants to keep for himself, we have some things that we love and we need to treat with care,’ Amara says.

As Vetiver grows older, Amara and Cal are seeking a little more space, so they’ve embarked on a new renovation project in Brunswick.

Designer Maria Llado’s mash-up of styles, including old & new, plus art, creates an exquisite apt. In the lounge, she’s combined casual outdoor rattan chairs with an ultra modern coffee table, antiques, sculptures, and art of various genres.

In the hall, she put a mustache and sunglasses on a bust in the niche. Under a rustic table, she placed 2 children’s chairs, and the vignette is flanked by vintage, chippie, columns.

A large mid-century light fixture hangs in the entrance to the dining area. This design demonstrates that you can put ANYTHING together and make it look high end.

There are so many sitting rooms in this home. I guess they don’t need bedrooms. I do love the teal leather chairs. On the wall is vintage oriental art, tropical mid-century drapes, and a modern art print. 

In this bedroom small pictures hang in the middle of empty frames and a contemporary painting is above the mantle.

The master bedroom has room for it’s own sitting area with 3 distinct chair designs. A muscle-bound plaster art piece hangs above the bed.

Worn, ornate Victorian chair stands beside a vintage clawfoot tub, the leafy print shower curtain doesn’t necessarily match, and bold modern tiles are in the shower. Seriously, you wouldn’t think that this complete mashup would work, but it’s all in the way you present it.
