One thing I dislike about each Charmed One

PRUE: her martial arts prowess in s3; not saying she should've been incapable of fighting, but I liked how the combat stuff was Phoebe's thing which she developed and trained to make up for her lack of an active power.

PIPER: her occasional sass turned constant sassy one liners in the later seasons; what was funny at first turned hurtful and unrealistic really fast, and it didn't help that nobody ever called her out on it

PHOEBE: her inability to keep a secret no matter whose life depends on it (it was endearing at first, but was kinda off putting later on...)

PAIGE: her cavalier attitude towards the Power of Three (it's true that they always risk the Po3 when fighting demons and whatnot, but it's different when they do it together or when one, most often Paige, insists on doing everything on her own and being mad at the involvement of her sisters when she's relying on/benefitting from the Po3)

I have a great idea - what if we sack Paul and Prue and bring back all the previous non-baking presenters to be judges? No nasty snide comments or ambiguous instructions, just a group of genuinely interesting and fun judges who choose winners based on actual baking ability and not bullshit timed challenges and personal flavour preferences!

I forgot that Elise straight up ignores Phoebe's pleas to not have to talk to her abusive evil ex and is just like, "Okay whatever, interview him anyway." She even tries to use Phoebe's conflicted feelings about Cole against her. Like I'm not saying Charmed was perfect about its Girl Power Thing before, but damn if they didn't go super fucking gross about Phoebe during season 5.

Elise's comments about readers not needing to know Phoebe divorcing Superman also just make no sense. From the mermaid episode, it's made pretty clear none of the readers goddamn know about Phoebe and Cole's relationship at all. Otherwise Nancy Odell asking IF there's a man causing all the love in her column would just be stupid. And the worst part is that normally Elise isn't like this! Or at least I don't remember her being like that. But in this episode, for no good goddamn reason, she's a heartless asshole who's determined to exploit Phoebe's pain for views. And it's all in service to this gross, awful plot where Cole just won't fucking stop stalking Phoebe. And the show keeps acting like Phoebe not 100% hating Cole like means something other than it's very hard to move on from an abusive ex, even when they're clearly garbage for you.

One of the most surprising things I've learned in recent years is that Prue was a lot of people's favorite sister. I always liked her the least and then I grew to fucking hate her in season 3, so I was not at all disappointed when they replaced her with Paige.

Except it’s been established from the literal beginning of the show that the girls can summon spirits. Hell, it’s established that spirits can summon themselves; Grams is constantly telling them what spells to use, Patty saves Prue in the first Friday the 13th episode, etc. All that changed in later seasons was that they became more skilled and powerful and they could summon spirits to the point they were corporeal. This didn’t change the fact that the dead couldn’t stay permanently and that they still existed in two different worlds. I loved this aspect of the show. Because the girls being Wiccan mean they had a different relationship with death - one many religions other than mainstream Christianity do; The Dead aren’t gone, they’ve just gone over the next hill. We are in constant community with the Dead and Charmed showed that beautifully.

I also don’t agree with them saying her character degenerated over the course of the series like the girls. This was the original statement of this post. They were talking about lot in the comments about her misandry and saying that she couldn’t see that all men weren’t bad….Leo? Andy? Grams and her comments about men were 1. True and 2. Obviously there are men this doesn’t apply to. Are we really doing “Not all men…” with Grams? Be serious. Grams shows up more often because the girls become more comfortable with death and because it’s needed so that Paige can establish familial connections. She doesn’t know Grams or Patty at all.

Someone also said that they didn’t like Grams because she casted spells on them as children and made Viktor leave. God. The spell Grams cast was to protect them from Nicholas. Did you even watch the series? And after Patty died, I’m assuming Grams didn’t think she could handle him on her own. I mean we see that Grams’ heart condition is already a thing when the Girls are toddlers/gestating in “That 70s Episode”. The demon-hunting/vanquishing duties of the Halliwell line seemed to have been taken up by Patty at that point. Grams wasn’t there when she died at the camp. And Grams did not make Viktor leave. Grams and Viktor constantly argued but she did not make him leave. Viktor, Patty, and Penny constantly argued about how to raise the girls. The former wanted to raise them as mortals and the latter two wanted to raise them as witches. Viktor left for a bit the year Phoebe was conceived/born, and came back that same year after discovering she was born. He also didn’t like Sam because Patty started spending a lot of time with him. And she most likely started doing this because Viktor was so anti-Wicca and Sam obviously wasn’t. He left when they had an affair and came back when Patty died. Grams was a grandmother and overbearing and Viktor and her constantly argued. He left after a demon attacked on Piper’s fifth birthday. Grams told the girls he was dangerous after that. She most likely did this because he didn’t want them to be witches at all. It would seem like him and Grams would align but they really don’t.

Grams always intended for them to be witches, but she didn’t think they were ready in the time leading up to her death. And we see that they really weren’t. Phoebe’s time in New York on her own obviously caused her to mature to a level she was not exhibiting in the time around Grams’ death. Prue and Piper also needed some time to sort out their issues. The sad fact of the matter is that they were too dependent on Grams, and they really couldn’t grow until she was gone. And we know that Grams was still able to influence them from the other side cuz she literally does that all throughout the show. She’s most likely the one who opens the attic for Phoebe in episode 1. I don’t think Grams would’ve ever denied them their powers if they found out and confronted her. And if they’d already began their job as Charmed Ones, I don’t think she would’ve took them away(she really wouldn’t have been able to) from them if she didn’t agree with how they were doing something or if they were in danger. Viktor would. We see that in episode 2 of season 1. He doesn’t care how the girls feel about the matter and works with evil if it gets him what he wants - the girls to be safe mortals. Not realizing that if the girls were mortal their enemies would quickly move to get rid of them in their vulnerable state. This is what Grams meant when she said he was a danger to them. Viktor is ignorant of the supernatural world and would try to protect them without becoming educated on the world or the girls’ duty and this would endanger them.

It’s also clear that Grams did care for Viktor. Viktor talks about how horrified she was when he saved Prue from the Demonic Ice Cream Truck. He probably was offended when she said he survived purely cuz of luck, but I think she was just being realistic. Viktor had no powers and he wasn’t likely to fare well against demons. I think she was really hurt when he left her alone to take care of the girls.

I came across posts you wrote a long time ago about Piper Halliwell and had to reach out to thank you. It seems like literally everyone LOVES Piper Halliwell, praising her as not just their favorite Charmed one but one of the best TV characters ever, and finding someone else who dislikes her was honestly the most validating experience I've had on this site! I recently rewatched a bunch of episodes and couldn't get over just how awful Piper is past the very first season. Fans are like 'all hail our sass queen!' like it's somehow a good thing that she goes out of her way to be ridiculously mean and bitter. She never, ever, ever stops complaining about everyone and everything, and it's not just that she's always in a terrible mood---it's that she directly takes that mood out on Leo and her sisters constantly, insulting and criticizing them nonstop. (Can you believe some people here think Piper was "too good" for Leo?! The man is a saint for patiently putting up with that shrew!) And she's always praised for her heart, but while the other three actually care about innocents, Piper is always the one whining about just wanting a "normal life" and throwing literal tantrums over things like wanting a better wedding or which of two great guys she should choose while there are literal LIVES at stake lol. Speaking of which, on a show about women destined to be witches, who thought it was a good idea to have one of the three main characters whine about how much she hates being a witch in Every. Single. Episode?! She's just such a completely unpleasant character with literally the worst attitude I've ever seen, and I can honestly say she ruins the show for me. (Disliking the turn they took with Phoebe's character didn't help either!) She was unapologetically terrible even before Prue's death, and it blows my mind that fans hate Prue for being too "harsh" when Piper is like a million times worse! Thank you for bravely speaking out so that all three of us who dislike her know we're not alone!!

Wow, I cannot believe it's been 5 years since I watched Charmed when I made those posts. And I never did finish watching the rest of the series 😭 So, naturally it's on my to rewatch and actually finish it this time around watch list. Lol

And I'm glad I could make you feel validated. When you, unfortunately, hate or dislike a character for whatever reason, especially one a majority of fans like, it's always nice to find like minded people. It's why I'm not quiet in my opinions. I want people to have a fun and safe space in fandoms even if that's just to discuss dislike for a fan favorite! Which is why if I am anti a specific character I try to tag properly so fans who do like the character can avoid my personal thoughts. And ofc, this means also never directing said dislike towards the fans who like specific characters. I just let people enjoy what they enjoy even if I do not.

Anyways, I'm surprised people view Piper as sassy. From what I remember, I never saw her as sassy, just annoying her complaints and plotline. And yeah! Prue maybe was 'harsh,' but she's the eldest and had that responsibility of caring for her younger sisters. She had a lot of weight on her shoulders. It's why she was serious a lot of the times and seemed to be hit the hardest by their mother's death from what I recall.

I wish I could comment more, but since it's been years don't remember a lot of details.

Summary:

Prue’s whole family is loyal to the Crown in the days lading up to the American Revolution (except for maybe an older brother?) Her father’s shop struggles to do business and the Tory children are ostracized in school. After one too many incidents all of the family, except for her oldest brother and aunt, move to Boston to live with her uncle’s family in the hopes of finding more safety. After a few months in Boston both families make the decision to move once more, this time to Nantucket.

By this point she should be been in stays of varying stiffnesses (not corsets) for most of her life. Stop trying to make corsets an issue for most historical people. It’s like wearing a bra. Get over it. (Spoiler: they did not get over it.)

I don’t feel like the average 18th century teacher would be super focused on spelling. There wasn’t really standardized spelling so spelling anxiety phonetically probably wouldn't have been a huge deal I wouldn’t think.

I probably should have expected the house divided politics thing but big oof. I suppose this will be the case for a good chunk of the Revolution and Civil War books.

When did George III get the rep of being mad? I thought his first episode was after the Revolution but I could be wrong. (Internet indicated a potential episode in the mid 1760s but nothing concrete until the late 1780s so after the end of the Revolution.)

The recipe listed on page 12 is better than 90% of what I find online because I don’t have to skim past someone’s life story for a million years first.

I understand that it’s listed out for the reader but the list and the “Meh, I hate all of these chores” comes off as a very modern attitude. Granted, I don’t think that any kid ever had enjoyed all of their chores.

How quick is the 18th century mail service? Also, a white silk pocket? For a child? How bougie are these people?

Boston makes sense for the short mail turn-around. Would Tories have called themselves Tories or would they have referred to themselves more consistently as Loyalists? Would a Tory have called those on the other sides “Patriots?” I think not.

I think the American intended audience means that even Tories refer to this conflict as a revolution, not a rebellion (or insurrection), because hindsight tells us we won. Had it gone the other way, I’m sure the Empire still would have fallen apart, we’d just refer to the 1770s as a failed rebellion or insurrection.

Would Thanksgiving have been celebrated at this point? The internet indicates maybe but probably not like we’re thinking.

Overall Thoughts After Reading

I feel like this was an unusual choice for publication in 2003 but it would be an even more unusual book to publish today. I thought it was interesting that the Emersons were seen as too Papist (Catholic) for decorating for Christmas.

Overall this book was fine. I rolled by eyes at every instance of Corset Nonsense (All 6 times. Stay tuned for this exciting new segment. *cue another eye roll*) and there were a few items that I need to check into a bit more. I remember reading this one when I was younger but have no strong feelings or memories about it.

I would've loved to see Charmed take a much darker route with Prue's character post All Hell Breaks Loose. What if Piper remained dead, Phoebe was forced to stay in the Underworld and was forcibly converted to evil and Prue was the last witch standing? I firmly believe that she would've gone off the deep end, falling into a Jason Todd-esque anti-hero role. Could've made for a great comic book.

As much as I hate to say it (bc they’re both great bakers and seem like wonderful people) it was going to be either Giuseppe or Jurgen

While chigs and Crystelle were bottom in the technical, they were also the only ones to get an handshake and told their showstopper was basically perfection. Both jurgen and Giuseppe got comments about their flavour/presentation

While I would argue it should have been Giuseppe who left (I feel like he was really just middling and let himself down int he showstopper), jurgen was the only one to not get a handshake, and while he’s a great baker, that would’ve worked against him

Also pls don’t slander the other bakers they’ve all worked so hard.

And pls be careful about ur comments on discrimination bc yes jurgen is German but he was defo favoured by Paul and prue and is also a /white man/ while chigs and Crystelle are pocs. I do agree that there is some race discrimination in bake off but saying that in defence of a white man while two pocs have fought and absolutely deserve that spot are in the final just feels wrong
