Regular reminder that if you don't live in the Global North, nothing they have to say applies to the rest of us. Actually most things they say have little value anyway since the Global South and Eastern folks are afterthoughts to them, much less center us in their social justice.
- The USAmerican cultural hegemony has fuck all to do with us. Be aware of what they're trying to peddle you, but they have more power to harm and radicalise you than you have ever could to harm them. This applies to both the Western left and right wing. They are both equally racist, colonial and imperialist.
- Global North issues around capitalism, exploitation and piracy have nothing to do with us. Consumer activism might work to some extent over there idk, but if anyone brings it up over in the lands of the Black and brown people, you can laugh them out of the country.
- Their queer history is not ours. Congrats to Stonewall and all but that's just some shit that happened in the US. We need to dig past 18 different strata of cultural genocide and colonial garbage to mine our queer histories back into the light, and designing microlabel flags and fighting over colonizer language acronyms have fuck all to do with that either.
- Always pirate everything within reach. Save up and buy from authors and creators you really like (that's what I do – esp when it's a BIPOC creator), but people who can't afford to buy shit in the first place ain't stealing food out of anybody's mouths. Pirating is praxis and always has been since the days of the East India Company.
- Don't buy into the USAmerican theories of race. They aren't universal. "BIPOC" especially is a USAmerican specific term, it is not used in the UK or other settler colonies. Constructs of race and the tribal Other far predated European colonization; race as a colour system that exists today is simply one variation of it. The global apartheid against the mellanated takes many forms, histories and terminology. There are especially no "people of colour" in Asia, Africa, Caribbean and Polynesia. There are only people who live there, and "people of white".
Race is a fake, made-up conceptualization imposed by whoever has power within each region. It's ethnic, cultural and casteist, with no biological basis whatsoever. There is no uniformity, no universalism, no rhyme nor reason to any of it; the only people who know exactly who doesn't belong are the oppressors. I'm seeing concepts like "unambiguously black" floating around the terminally online Western left; any dark-skinned person of the Global South should split their sides laughing at it. Whites have no ambiguity on who the darkies are.
- Read, watch, listen to, play whatever the hell you want, just have the sense to pirate it, and to be very conscious about the narratives they try to smuggle.
- When the US and UK speak, listen with compassionate interest, offer what solidarity you can spare for their downtrodden, and then go back to reading and following your own fucking news. Focus on our own women's and reproductive rights, trans rights, queer histories, rise of fascism, militarisation, anti-blackness, class warfare, nationalist violence, imperialism etc. That is decolonization, that is emancipation from the Western cultural hegemony. Everything else is the bread and circuses of empire, in which both the left and right wing of the West are complicit.
We owe the Global North nothing more than we can each individually afford to extend to them on grounds of common human decency and compassion. Which is a lot more than they will ever reciprocate.

The Best Torrents And Downloads On Pirate Bay
The Pirate Bay Org has remained one of the most controversial and, at the same time, valuable websites in contemporary times before focusing on this website's nature, history, and legal repercussions, outlining its content, the services it provides to the users, and the legal aspects it violates.
The pirate bay, also referred to as TPB is an online Swedish-based torrent website that allows users to the copyrighted materials, including movies, software, applications, e-books, television programs, games, and music albums. It would also be apposite to highlight that the pirate bay is regarded as one of the most popular torrent websites operating out of Sweden.
Like all other torrent websites, the website has remained mired in different controversies and legal predicaments because of its pro-pirating methods. Because of the controversial nature of this site and the violation of international copyrights and piracy laws, the TPB has remained functional periodically and has confronted restrictions in most countries of the world.
This website has allowed users to upload and download the latest entertainment content without significant issues. On the other hand, it has allowed individuals to distribute files having extra large sizes.
These files usually contain games and movies, which remain the actual property of the company and are being distributed illegally online. The site has also remained the target of legal complaints from movie studios, content providers, book writers, and the music industry because of its stance on information piracy (Looper, 2014).
All these aspects make this website one of the most controversial online forums that have allowed users to download and upload the content of their choice while, on the other hand, having breached the legal elements that could ensure the safety and privacy of the content.
This paper aims to outline the history of TPB, the nature of the content that it produces, the laws that it has violated in the past, and the challenges that it confronts in the future. However, before highlighting all these elements in detail, it is essential to understand this website's history and its creators' vision at the time of its initiation.
The Pirate Bay (TPB) was founded in 2003 in Sweden by an anti-copyright group known as Piratbyrån (Bureau of Piracy), and the primary idea behind the setting up of this website was to provide an online platform for internet users where they can share and download their desired files without confronting the predicaments related to copyright infringements (Brits & TechBullion, 2022).
The individuals setting this website up included Peter Sunde, Gottfrid Svartholm, and Fredrick Neij. The thing that inspired these individuals to set up TPB was Napster, another online platform that allowed users to share and download electronic copies of different songs and music albums (Brits & TechBullion, 2022). Napster was eventually shut down in 2001.
However, it provided the individuals mentioned above with the idea that changed the face of online sharing forever. Initially, this website's founders needed a formal, organized structure at a time when Bit Torrent file sharing technology was a new concept in the online realm. The founders of TPB wanted to create and stabilize their file-sharing platform in order to assist as well as amplify the promotion of information sharing all over the world. Gottfrid Svartholm was the first individual who initiated this site in Mexico.
Later the site was moved to Sweden, where it garnered more than a million users (Brits & TechBullion, 2022). Not only that, by the end of the year 2004, the file hosted about 60,000 torrent files which prompted the founders to expand their user base and look forward to attracting users from all over the world (Brits & TechBullion, 2022).

A continuation of that POTC AU (previous part here) -- here’s Captain “Carey Weasley” (AKA Carewyn Cromwell), with Captain Orion Amari’s First Mate, the one and only Murphy McNully! This is my first time trying to draw McNully, and uh...DUDE. You make a SICK pirate, mate. <33 His outfit is inspired by Joshamee Gibbs’s (whose role he kind of fills here, alongside Quartermaster Skye), and his chair is inspired by this model used by Sir Thomas Fairfax in the 17th century, which was one of the first self-steering wheeled chairs ever made -- later in the 18th century, a nicer model called the Bath chair was developed and soon became the standard, though it remained only in the hands of the wealthy until the end of the century. (I could see Orion putting in the work to steal one for his buddy, once he catches wind of them, though. XDDD)
McNully’s carving himself a new prosthetic wooden leg, since when Orion’s pirate crew first moved to take over Carewyn’s ship, she cut Murphy’s left wooden leg off with her cutlass while trying to beat the pirates back away from her crew. (McNully lost both legs above the knee, so his wooden prosthetics are made up of two pieces with a metal joint secured together with two leather straps, sort of like this.) Fortunately things have been smoothed over a bit, now that Carewyn and Orion have realized who the other is and Orion has similarly let McNully in on the revelation too. McNully then assumed the responsibility of “watching the prisoner” while Orion, Skye, and some other crew members headed ashore to Tortuga for supplies. It didn’t take long for Carewyn to migrate up to the railing of Orion’s ship so as to get a better look at the infamous and completely filthy pirate haven, and Murphy rolled up beside her so they could talk.
“It’s funny, really,” McNully said with a wry smile. “It was me what suggested we try capturing you next.”
Carewyn glanced at Orion’s First Mate in surprise.
“There’d been a lot of talk about Carey Weasley, the youngest Captain in the entire British Navy, and the respect he’d garnered from the crown for his heroism fighting the Spanish,” McNully explained. “I reckoned capturing someone that well known would be a real blow to the Navy, and by extension, Cutler Beckett and his Company. Your capture on its own would likely hurt their morale by a good 35%.”
McNully’s expression then turned more thoughtful.
“...I almost regret it now, considering you seem to be a decent sort -- and I can’t reckon this whole thing will reflect too well on you. There’s a 42.5% chance you won’t advance in rank much further, and worse, a 15% chance you’ll be actively demoted, if they catch wind you surrendered without a fight...even if it was to save your crew, which was objectively a very noble thing to do.”
He smiled a bit guiltily. Carewyn offered him a small smile in return.
“If you hadn’t suggested going after me, though, I wouldn’t have ended up here and found out Orion was alive,” she pointed out reassuringly.
McNully smiled a little more fully. “True!”
He looked out at the horizon briefly, as if checking to see if the jollyboat was returning. Then he returned his focus to Carewyn.
“You know, though...there might be a way for us to use our new truce strategically, so that we both make it out ahead.”
Carewyn turned around, leaning her back against the railing and crossing her arms.
“Oh?”
McNully’s smile spread into more of a smirk. “You’re a well-respected officer of the Navy...and yet you’re no friend of the East India Trading Company and, more importantly, you don’t want Orion or any of us to die. We’re pirates, but our Captain is fond of you, and quite frankly, we could do with some allies, in the face of everyone trying to kill us. So here’s what I propose -- we let you escape. We sail through waters the Navy’s going to passing through, supposedly to go pick up medicine we couldn’t find on Tortuga -- and while we’re engaged in sea battle, you bust out of the brig, help the British soldiers ‘fight us off,’ and then swing over to their ship. We then retreat because we lost our ‘cargo’ -- namely, you -- and we can tell we’re losing. We keep the Navy ship from following us...but they still get one of their greatest heroes back, crashing onto the scene in a blaze of glory. If we play our cards right, I reckon there’s a 48.3% chance you might even get a promotion when all’s said and done...that is, if you think you can manage escaping the brig on your own.”
Carewyn gave a light scoff, her lips spreading into a small smirk of her own.
“Yours wouldn’t be the first one I’ve escaped. You should probably lock me in irons, for good measure -- it’ll be more convincing that I escaped, if I still have one on my wrist when I make it up on deck.”
The plan went into effect once Orion and the others returned to the Artemis and they set sail away from Tortuga. Although Carewyn had expressed confidence in her ability to escape the brig, it didn’t startle and impress Orion any less to see Carewyn up on deck after having been locked in a secure cell with both of her hands locked together in the heaviest shackles they had. She even ended up using the shackle on her wrist as a weapon, knocking out three of his men with it before she reached Orion at the ship’s railing.
Orion couldn’t help but think he’d never feel such vivication again as he did in that intense, wonderful sword fight they had upon the deck of the Artemis, parrying and slashing their swords at each other as they migrated up to the helm, leapt up into the rigging, and balanced on the edge of the Artemis’s railing before Carewyn finally got close enough that she could leap over to the HMS Dauntless.
Orion slammed his sword up against hers, pressing Carewyn back against the ropes. Although to most any clueless observer, it looked like they were still hotly engaged in battle, Orion’s voice was very soft when he spoke.
“This is your chance,” he murmured.
“Yes,” said Carewyn.
Orion’s free hand had grabbed onto the ropes to stabilize himself over her as their chests touched. His heart rate quickened, even as he kept his dark eyes squarely on hers.
Now that the moment had come for them to part, the little time they’d been able to share seemed far, far too brief...
Carewyn’s own blue eyes rippled solemnly.
“Be safe, Orion.”
And without taking another moment to breathe, she brought up her foot and kicked him full on in the stomach. The blow threw him off her with a grunt, and she leapt up into the rigging, grabbed a loose piece of rope, and swung over to the deck of the Dauntless.
Orion cradled his stomach as Skye ran over to help him up.
“Captain -- are you okay?”
A small, fond smile flickered over Orion’s face.
“Yes.”
He then shot to his feet with a much more grim and urgent expression on his face. He had to make this retreat looking convincing, after all.
“All hands, fall back! Fall back!”
Carewyn’s return to Port Royal -- as McNully had predicted -- was full of honors and acclaim, including a promotion to the rank of Commodore. It seemed that her being the only officer who had managed to escape the infamous Captain Orion Amari’s captivity made her a hero in the eyes of the British Empire. Portrait miniatures had been painted of her and sold both on and outside of Port Royal, and soon quite a few ladies were sending love letters and throwing themselves at Carewyn in an attempt to woo her, enthralled with her fame and handsome face. The overabundance of attention greatly amused Carewyn’s surrogate brothers Bill and Charlie, once they’d gotten over the anxiety they’d felt when she returned safe and sound. Percy in particular had taken Carewyn’s capture very hard, given that he’d been her Lieutenant at the time, and had resolved to make sure that no pirate ever felt bold enough to do something like that again.
The most prominent pursuer of Carewyn’s hand, however, was Port Royal’s Governor, Alphard Farrier, who was once again determined to arrange a marriage between her and his daughter, Jules. @cursebreakerfarrier With Carewyn now a well-respected Commodore of the Fleet known for breaking out of a heavily locked pirate brig and facing off against Orion Amari single-handedly, he knew it would be advantageous both to his family and to his own anti-piracy policies to have her in Port Royal permanently as his son-in-law. He even went so far as to have Jules arrive at Carewyn’s promotion ceremony in the fanciest, most fashionable dress he could get shipped in from London, in the hopes that it would catch the young Commodore’s eye. It did -- but not for the reason the Governor had hoped.
“Might I have a moment, Miss Farrier?” said Carewyn, inclining her head and back in a polite bow.
Jules rather quickly took Carewyn’s offered hand and let the new Commodore lead her away from her father. Carewyn didn’t speak again until they were up on the wall of the fort beside the large ship’s bell, looking out to sea -- in other words, when they were well away from everyone else.
“Are you all right?” muttered Carewyn. Her eyebrows had come together in concern.
Jules’s face grew much less lady-like and polite, betraying exhaustion and some irritation.
“...Not...exactly,” she gasped lowly. “But when you’re -- stuck in this kind of...torture chamber...I guess that’s -- appropriate...”
She indicated her chest, which looked quite a bit more restrained than usual, as she fanned herself a bit faster.
Carewyn’s eyes narrowed and she sighed in aggravation. “For goodness sake -- ”
She glanced around. Even if she’d managed to get them away from prying ears, she could still see plenty of people watching them, even if they quickly looked away when they saw she’d noticed them -- no doubt they were trying to discern if there was an engagement in the works.
‘Damn,’ Carewyn swore to herself. ‘I can’t try to loosen anything, while everyone’s gawking...’
“Try to focus on your breathing,” she advised under her breath. “We’ll talk slowly. Bit by bit. That way you can make sure you’re taking deep breaths.”
Jules smiled slightly in gratitude. “...Thanks, Carey.”
Jules, like the Weasleys, knew that Carewyn was really a girl, but couldn’t help but call her that, even when they were in private. She’d figured it out after mentally connecting “Carey Weasley” to a young red-haired peasant girl she used to hear singing in the streets outside her window in the Governor’s mansion in the evenings.
“You were always so far off, so I never got a good look at your face,” Jules had explained with a smile when Carewyn and Bill asked her how she’d figured it out, “but I remembered your hair and how much it sounded like you were smiling, when you were singing. I hear it when you’re talking a lot of the time, too. I don’t hear a lot of people’s smiles like that.”
After that, Jules had become one of Carewyn’s closest friends. It also prompted Bill and Jules to reach out more to each other, which resulted in Bill ending up head over heels in love. Carewyn suspected Jules’s feelings were just as strong as well, but given that Bill was a priest who didn’t even have a full congregation of his own yet and didn’t come from money himself, it was likely he was biding his time to court Jules properly, until he knew he had a chance of convincing her father.
Jules took several deep breaths. Once Carewyn was sure her friend looked a bit more steady on her feet, she folded her arms behind her back in standard Navy posture and spoke again.
“Bill sends his regards.”
Jules’s dark eyes sparked a bit.
“He does?”
She took another two deep breaths before adding, “...Is...that all he said?”
“Well, he did say as an aside that he couldn’t stop thinking about you during service the other day,” said Carewyn with a wry smile. “Apparently the mention of ‘the beauty of Heaven’s angels’ kept bringing your face to his mind.”
Jules’s face flushed. Carewyn chuckled lowly through a closed smile, so as not to cover her mouth with her hand like she might normally -- she knew the gesture appeared rather lady-like.
“It’s a shame your father has such tunnel vision on me,” Carewyn said coolly. “There’s a far better Weasley to select as his son-in-law, were he only to look.”
Jules grimaced.
“I know,” she said. She took a few more deep breaths. “And well...the only reason he is so focused on you...is because you were able to escape Orion Amari.”
“Captain,” Carewyn slipped in before she could stop herself.
When Jules blinked in surprise, Carewyn turned toward the horizon with the most offhand shrug she could manage.
“Captain Orion Amari.”
Sensing Jules’s discerning gaze on her face, Carewyn kept her gaze on the sea. Behind her back, she rubbed her thumbs along her healed palms absently.
“...Carey...” said Jules quietly, “...is something wrong?”
Carewyn swallowed. She hadn’t told anyone else the full story of what had happened -- after Percy had reacted so hostilely toward her being captured, she hadn’t dared tell Bill or Charlie everything while he was present, and she hadn’t yet had the opportunity to talk to either of them alone, with how quickly her promotion ceremony was thrown together.
Her blue eyes flickered over her shoulder at the bystanders behind them. They were far enough away that they wouldn’t be able to hear, even if they were still looking over so avidly...
“...Captain Amari...” she murmured as softly as she could, “...let me escape.”
Jules looked surprised.
“It’s a long story...but we knew each other once. I bandaged him up and hid him from the Navy, when we were young. When he discovered who I was...he and his crew agreed to let me go.”
Jules stared at Carewyn, her dark eyes wide with amazement. Then her gaze softened visibly and she smiled.
“...He must’ve been grateful for what you did for him.”
Carewyn’s blue eyes softened upon the sparkling sea.
“It wasn’t gratitude. Orion...is simply a good man...pirate he may be.”
The memory of him bandaging her hands -- of his rippling dark eyes as they bore into hers -- floated again over her mind.
“I can’t act like I knew, or even thought seriously, that our stars would align again…but even with that…I’d imagined a life much better than this for you.”
“Well,” said Jules with a smile, “it seems like those two things...shouldn’t be mutually exclusive.”
Carewyn turned her gaze back to Jules at last, smiling wryly. “Better not let your father hear you say that.”
Carewyn and Jules talked casually for the next half-hour, with Carewyn taking care to make sure their conversation was spaced out enough that Jules could catch her breath. After a while, it seemed the length of their conversation had attracted the Governor’s attention (no doubt he was getting a bit restless, not being sure if things were going according to plan), and had asked Carewyn to give Jules and him some privacy. And so Carewyn reluctantly left Jules and the Governor alone on top of the wall of the fort.
It could only have been about ten or fifteen minutes when Carewyn was alerted by Governor Farrier’s screams. Jules -- clearly not having been able to catch her breath properly, while in the midst of a quick-paced argument with her father -- had fainted right off the fort’s wall and landed in the water below. Her heart racing with panic, Carewyn led a battalion of soldiers down to the dock below, desperate to reach her friend.
When they arrived, they found Jules choking up water on the deck, her fancy dress discarded, her horrible corset cut off, and three men standing around her. Two of them were red-garbed British soldiers -- the other was a man with dark brown dreadlocks under an emerald green bandana and black kohl around his rippling dark eyes.
Carewyn’s heart leapt into her throat when their eyes met.
It was Orion.

so lately, i've been reflecting a lot on which direction corporate interests and economists want america to start heading.
in those fields, everyone and their dog is saying that all workers in america should be priming to learn computer science and programming. it seems they're hoping for urban economies to enter the fray of software specialization to have us compete with india, vietnam and japan in this field, most likely because they feel it would be lucrative to invest in the domestic workforce's capacity to cultivate economies based in code for corporations to sell.
nevermind how ridiculous and arbitrary it is for market forces to be deciding over our fate and what everyone's aptitudes should be, i've studied both computer science and economics. specialized economies are extremely fault-prone against the eventual proliferation and perhaps even the obsolescence of their specialty, and the model in itself is inefficient and obsolete, and on top of that, as a former student in computer science, i know what software is, and yes, computer software is amazing, but it is no basis for a specialized economy, certainly not under capitalism.
even putting aside my own convictions on copyright, piracy in its own right poses a serious risk to the profitability of such an economy, and furthermore, anti-capitalist and decentralized tendencies are part of programming and software's entire legacy in innovation and the desire for any software in the first place. that's basically the entire legacy of gnu and linux. the only basis for commercial enterprises in software is HARDWARE, the reason for having a capitalist software industry is for complementing machines and making them comprehensible for end-users, to justify the implementation, mass production and sale of consumer hardware, which would be a far more sensible basis for a specialist economy, that's why companies like IBM, acorn and apple had arranged for software to be tailor made for the hardware manufactured in their names. too bad most of our consumer hardware is manufactured under corporations in china.
for an operating system or program to be developed for compatibility with different sets of hardware, the service is essentially the software in itself, which would be much better off as a communally owned asset than as a commercial product or service. why do you think people would rather use linux for a universal system than solaris? i'll even venture to guess that you're more likely to have heard of linux than solaris, because for a system to be able to complement a variety of machines would require a prolific community effort. even at a corporate setting, programmers porting software to different machines requires consultations from outsiders to their companies on how that hardware works and how best to interface with it, and if that's the way it's gonna be, community efforts are more likely to succeed and gain sympathy when held exclusively as the heritage of communities. of course the developers would rather be contributing to nonprofit projects that can't hold them liable against anything except violations of open licenses and attribution, and codes of conduct, and in so doing, they'd make their best techniques available for public study and discourse, or else pirates and hackers will be finding ways to crack and observe, respecify, and reimplement code for open projects, or else to just redistribute it. of course users would rather develop an interest in software that has a clear policy in ethics and transparency and software that empowers them to do what they will with it. and with corporate efforts to indoctrinate the expansion of computer literacy, they would be transforming end-users into capable hackers. lest we forget corporations' embrace of open-source licensing in recent years, whether corporate code be licensed under the GPL, the MPL, or the BSD or MIT license, if these new, capable hackers are distributing and modifying that code and the knowledge on how to compile and install it, it wouldn't even be piracy, they would be doing so as they are legally permitted to by the code itself, and that's the point of open-source licensing.
like it or not, this is entirely the humanly natural basis for the viral nature of the gnu general public license.
but that's not the only problem with attempting to cultivate a specialized economy around software. with commodities as nebulous and fickle as software, other economies may grow to resent trading their material goods for access to it when they can probably just as easily and more freely access it through git or bittorrent, and they may not continue trading with the specialists, especially if these economies are contributing insights and man hours of their own into the software they use for work and play, or if quality and labor standards are not clear, and for a satisfactory level of transparency to be apparent, the GPL or some derivative thereof would have to be enforced, which still weakens the the hold of commerce over software, nearly as much as ctrl-c ctrl-v.
they would be less likely to continue trade with such a silly post-industrial venture.
but i'm not coming here to tell you not to learn to code. i learned to code. if you feel that coding is your calling, do it, but i want you to come with a clear understanding of what software is and about its history, its culture, and its legacy, and most of it has been spent in opposition to commodification and commerce, and otherwise has very serious and nigh insurmountable vulnerabilities against expropriation via piracy, reimplementation, and open licensing, and most importantly, i want you to understand the precarious relationship a specialist in software will have to other industries.
time to face facts, this time american economists and businesses came up with a really stupid plan

Mulan And The Chinese Women Warriors of History and Legend
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
While American audiences know the story of Mulan through the 1998 animated Disney film and the upcoming live-action reboot, they may not know that the films are based on a Chinese legend. Hua Mulan is a legendary figure whose story was first told in “Ballad of Mulan,” a folksong first transcribed in the 6th century. In the legend, Mulan is a girl who disguises herself as a man and goes to war in place of her father. Mulan fights for many years as part of the army and, after earning much honor and gifts from the emperor, returns home to her family. Only then does she reveal her gender identity.
While Mulan may be the most familiar of woman Chinese warriors (at least to American audiences), she’s only one in a rich history of historical and legendary female heroes in Chinese history. With the live-action adaptation of Mulan releasing on Disney+ this Friday, here are some of the highlights you might encounter when brushing up on your Chinese legends and history—figures who perhaps warrant their own feature film adaptation…
Xun Guan
At thirteen, Xun Guan was already an accomplished martial artist and tactician. Her father, Xun Song, was the governor of Xianyang in the late 200s A.D. One night, when the castle was under siege, Xun Song was ready to lead a force against the opposing soldiers. Convinced that her father leaving the castle would be bad for morale, she proposed that instead she lead a group of elite soldiers out to defeat the enemy. Even though she was only thirteen, Xun Gun had her father’s trust, and he sent her out. Once outside the walls, Xun Guan immediately spotted a weak spot in the enemy’s position, and she and her troops were triumphant against them, successfully allowing the castle to hold out until more reinforcements could arrive.
Pingyang
During much of Pingyang’s lifetime in the early 600s, the emperor, Yangdi, was incompetent, greedy, and vain—he’s become a villain of Chinese history. Pingyang was the daughter of military commander Li Yuan, and became the wife of Chai Shao, the leader of Yangdi’s palace guard. Yangdi decided that Li Yuan was just too good at his job, so he trumped up false charges and had Li Yuan arrested, only to realize that Li Yuan was the only person who could protect Yangdi from people who actually were plotting against him. Yangdi released Li Yuan, but the damage was done: now Li Yuan wanted Yangdi dead, as well. As Li Yuan rebelled, Chai Shao and Pingyang had to decide how both of them could safely support her father; Chai Shao left first to openly join Li Yuan’s rebellion, and Pingyang later escaped on her own, braving the danger because she was confident she could hide in plain sight.
She journeyed back to her family’s lands and threw open the larders, endearing the people to her and recruiting the first members of what would become known as the Army of the Lady, or the Woman’s Army. As the war continued, Pingyang made alliances and built an army 70,000 strong, keeping them all under a strict code of conduct the prohibited looting, raping, and pillaging. Where the army went, they brought food with them to feed the locals, so they were greeted as liberators. Yangdi dismissed Pingyang as a threat (she was just a woman, after all!), until it was far too late; her forces were unhindered by Yangdi’s troops, and they joined up with Li Yuan and Chai Shao for the final attack on the capital—and, in their victory, the establishment of the Tang Dynasty.
Wu Zetian
In the late 600s, China had a woman emperor. Depending on which historical records you read (the sources tend to be very biased against or very biased toward the empress), she lied, cheated, and murdered her way to the throne—and did more of the same to stay there. She started her imperial career as the favorite concubine of Emperor Taizong. When he died, she married his son, the new emperor, Gaozong. Some sources imply that a romance was going on long before the old emperor’s death; others suggest she was so good at courtly intrigue that Gaozong kept her by his side and ruled equally with her, relying on her political savvy. After Gaozong’s death, their children were in line for the throne; Wu poisoned the eldest, exiled the second, and had plans to manipulate the third and continue to rule. When that son showed too much backbone (and made too many other courtiers angry), she had him deposed, replaced him with his younger brother, and then eventually deposed that child, too, taking on the mantle of rule for herself. Though her rule as emperor was short, she made a number of state improvements in religion, literature, and education—and some historians credit those changes with still having an influence on modern Chinese scholarship.
Liang Hongyu
Although she started her career as a musician, Liang Hongyu ended up using her instrumental skills for a more military purpose. She is said to have met her husband, military officer Han Shizhong, when she was performing as a singer and drummer for his troop. They married in 1121, and she later fought by his side as the army pushed back an invasion by the Huns. The drumming comes in because, during that era, commands were sent to different units in the military through flags and drum signaling. Her drummed orders (and the strategy she came up with) are credited with leading a group of only 8,000 soldiers to victory against a force of 100,000 Hun warriors.
Qin Liangyu
Fighting against the Manchus was a family experience for Qin Liangyu, who went to war alongside her brothers in the early 1600s. When the Manchus—from beyond the Great Wall—threatened Beijing, Qin Liangyu led troops from Sichuan to defend the capital. But there were also rebel forces within the Ming Dynasty, and Qin Liangyu fought against them as well, alongside her son, Ma Xianglin. There’s not just one story of Qin Liangyu’s successes; she fought so many successful campaigns that the Chongzhen Emperor appointed her Crown Prince’s Guardian and a title equivalent to marquis. When the Ming Dynasty fell during Qin Liangyu’s later years, she remained in control of an area of Sichuan, where she helped settle 100,000.
Wu Mei
Women in martial arts are common enough in modern schools (and modern film), but they’ve been around much longer! In fact, the founder of the famous kung fu style Wing Chun was one of the legendary five elders of Shaolin Martial Arts, was a woman. Buddhist nun Wu Mei (also known as Ng Mui) survived the destruction of the Shaolin Temple of Dengfeng during the Qing Dynasty. The shaolin practitioners had been accused of anti-Qing activities, and the army went to destroy them for it. In the bloody battle that followed, only the five known as the five elders survived. They’re credited with spreading martial arts across China, and Wu was said to have invented some of the most important styles. Her Wing Chun is possibly the best known of these, named after Wu’s first student—also a woman—Yim Wing Chun.
Ching Shih
In the early 1800s, when the Golden Age of piracy had already faded in the Caribbean, a pirate queen was sailing her fleet, commanding as many as 80,000 outlaws (sources differ), in the South China Sea. History has forgotten her birth name—Ching Shih translates to “widow of Ching”—but not her amazing deeds, which have put her down in the history books as one of the most successful pirates in history. Ching Shih worked as a prostitute until she married the notorious pirate Cheng I (who was reportedly impressed with her shrewd business sense), who had united different factions of pirates into his Red Flag Fleet.
Legends say that she required half the fleet to belong to her as a condition of the marriage, and when Cheng I died six years later, she took control of the entire fleet. She kept order by enforcing a strict pirate code, and though the Qing dynasty officials, Portuguese Navy, and the East India Company all tried to defeat the fleet, she ruled the waves, only ending her piratical activities when she was offered amnesty from the Chinese government. She lived until she was 69, and she’s the inspiration behind Mistress Ching, one of the Pirate Lords in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Yu Shu Lien and Jen Yu
These two are completely fictional, but as far as pop culture goes, these women warriors cannot be left out. In the film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Jen Yu (played by Zhang Ziyi) is a teenager and an amazing martial artist who has been secretly trained by the villainous Jade Fox, under the nose of Jen’s father, the governor. Yu Shu Lien (played by Michelle Yoeh) owns and runs a private security company; she’s close friends with Li Mu Bai, and she agrees to go with him to take his sword, the Green Destiny, as a gift to a benefactor. When the Green Destiny is stolen, they track it to Governor Yu’s mansion. Eventually, Jen Yu is discovered as the thief, but her youth and talent make both Li Mu Bai and Yu Shu Lien sympathetic to her, even after they realize she’s been taught by Li Mu Bai’s enemy, Jade Fox. Later in the film, Yu Shu Lien tries to teach Jen Yu a lesson, and the two have one of the best choreographed multi-weapon epic martial arts movie fights in the history of martial arts movies.
Aero
Another fictional Chinese hero is Aero, Marvel’s manhua series star. When she’s not being a superhero, Lei Ling is an architect in Beijing. When the monsters start coming, however, she takes to the sky as Aero, the protector of her city. Using powers of manipulating winds and air currents, she struggles with the destruction caused by supervillains, because her passion is for building and creating, not for seeing things torn down. The character was first introduced in the Agents of Atlas comic, but she started starring in her own ongoing comic series in 2019. It’s too much to hope that we’ll get a hint of her in the MCU’s upcoming Shang Chi, but the ongoing series, written by Zhou Liefen with stories by Alyssa Wong and Greg Pak, and art by Keng and Pop Mhan, is definitely worth picking up.
Honorable Mention: Cassandra Cain
I didn’t know this when I watched Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), but Cassandra Cain—the thief kid who swallows the film’s macguffin—has a long and awesome history in DC comics. She’s a first generation Chinese American; her mother, Lady Shiva, is a dangerous assassin who fled from her village, and her father, David Cain, is one of Ra’s al Ghul’s henchmen. It’s not a love match—he blackmails her into having his child, and then he raises Cassandra to be the perfect assassin and bodyguard. But when she was just eight years old, her empathy made her reject a path of killing, and she ends up in Gotham, where she saves Commissioner Gordon’s life and becomes Batgirl. In fact, Cassandra Cain was the first Batgirl to have her own standalone series run (in 2000). Eventually, after a series of twists and turns, she takes a gig working as one of the global team of Batmen as the Black Bat, where she fights crime in Hong Kong. It’s hard to imagine the Birds of Prey version matching up, but I’d love to see that character in more DC movies!
Mulan premieres on Disney+ on September 4th. Find out how and when you can access it here.

France vs. the Siamese - the 1688 Siege of Bangkok
The Siege of Bangkok was a key event of the Siamese revolution of 1688, in which the Kingdom of Siam ousted the French from Siam. Following a coup d'état, in which the pro-Western king Narai was replaced by Phetracha, Siamese troops besieged the French fortress in Bangkok for four months. The Siamese were able to muster about 40,000 troops, equipped with cannon, against the entrenched 200 French troops, but the military confrontation proved inconclusive. Tensions between the two belligerents progressively subsided, and finally a negotiated settlement was reached allowing the French to leave the country.
The Siege of Bangkok would mark the end of French military presence in Siam, as France was soon embroiled in the major European conflicts of the War of the League of Augsburg (1688–1697), and then the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1713/1714). With the end of the siege, a long period started during which Siam would remain suspicious of Western intervention. Only a few French missionaries were allowed to remain, while trade continued on a limited level with other European countries such as Portugal, the Dutch Republic and England.
King Narai had sought to expand relations with the French, as a counterweight to Portuguese and Dutch influence in his kingdom, and at the suggestion of his Greek councilor Constantine Phaulkon. Numerous embassies were exchanged in both directions, including the embassy of Chevalier de Chaumont to Siam in 1685 and the embassy of Kosa Pan to France in 1686.
This led to a major dispatch of French ambassadors and troops to Siam in 1687, organized by the Marquis de Seignelay. The embassy consisted of a French expeditionary force of 1,361 soldiers, missionaries, envoys and crews aboard five warships. The military wing was led by General Desfarges, and the diplomatic mission by Simon de la Loubère and Claude Céberet du Boullay, a director of the French East India Company. Desfarges had instructions to negotiate the establishment of troops in Mergui and Bangkok (considered as "the key to the kingdom") rather than the southern Songkla, and to take these locations if necessary by force.
King Narai agreed to the proposal, and a fortress was established in each of the two cities, which were commanded by French governors. Desfarges noted in his account of the events that he was in command of the fortress of Bangkok, with 200 French officers and men, as well as a Siamese contingent provided by King Narai, and Du Bruant was in command of Mergui with 90 French soldiers. Another 35 soldiers with three or four French officers were assigned to ships of the King of Siam, with a mission to fight piracy.
The disembarkment of French troops in Bangkok and Mergui led to strong nationalist movements in Siam directed by the Mandarin and Commander of the Elephant Corps, Phra Phetracha. By 1688 anti-foreign sentiments, mainly directed at the French and Phaulkon, were reaching their zenith. The Siamese courtiers resented the dominance of the Greek Phaulkon in state affairs, along with his Japanese wife Maria Guyomar de Pinha and European lifestyle, whilst the Buddhist clergy were uneasy with the increasing prominence of the French Jesuits. The Siamese mandarinate under the leadership of Phetracha complained about the occupation force and increasingly opposed Phaulkon.
Matters were brought to a head when King Narai fell gravely ill in March 1688. Phetracha initiated the Siamese revolution of 1688 by seizing the Royal Palace in Lopburi and putting king Narai under house-arrest on 17–18 May. He also imprisoned Constantine Phaulkon on 18 May 1688, and executed the king's adopted son Mom Pi on May 20.
General Desfarges in Lopburi
On 2 June, General Desfarges, commander of the Bangkok fortress, was invited to Lopburi by Phetracha, and according to the account of one of his officers named De la Touche received promises of significant personal gains, such as the naming of his eldest son, Marquis Desfarges, to a major position in the Siamese government, equivalent to that which Constantine Phaulkon had held. Phetracha also required Desfarges to move his troops from Bangkok to Lopburi in order to contribute in an ongoing war with the Lao and the Cochin-Chinese.Desfarges managed to leave by promising that he would send the troops demanded by Phetracha, and that he would remit the fortress of Bangkok. He also had to leave his two sons as hostages to Phetracha.
Desfarges left Lopburi on 5 June. As Desfarges had shown no interest in the fate of Phaulkon, Phetracha ordered Phaulkon's execution the same day.Phaulkon, who had been submitted to many tortures since his arrest, was beheaded by Phetracha's own son, Ok-Phra Sorasak. Desfarges returned to Bangkok on 6 June accompanied by two mandarins, including Kosa Pan, the former ambassador to France, to whom he was supposed to remit the fortress. According to Vollant de Verquains, on that same day, in a council of war with his officers, the decision was taken not to obey Phetracha, but rather to resist him and start an armed confrontation.
Start of the hostilities
Phetracha moved to besiege the French fortress in Bangkok with 40,000 men, and over a hundred cannons. The Siamese troops apparently received Dutch support in their fight against the French, and the Dutch factor Johan Keyts was accused of collaborating with the Siamese.
The French had two fortresses (one in Bangkok, one in Thonburi on the other side of the Chao Phraya river) and 200 men, including officers. General Desfarges was commander-in-chief, and Mr de Vertesalle was second in command. For food, they also had about 100 cows, which Constance Phaulkon had had the foresight of providing them, which they started to slaughter. In order to facilitate defensive work, they also burnt down the small village which was near the Bangkok fortress.
The first act of war was the attack on a Chinese junk belonging to the king of Siam, which was passing by. The captain of the junk had refused to give supplies to French, especially the salt which was needed to salt meat, and therefore was fired on repeatedly.
Thonburi fortress
The French initially occupied both sides of the Chao Phraya in Bangkok, with two fortresses, one on the left bank (the Bangkok fortress) and one on the right bank (the Thonburi fortress). Seeing that the position would be difficult to defend, especially since communications would become nearly impossible at low tide, the French decided to regroup in the larger fortress, on the left bank of the river. The French destroyed parts of the fortifications, split 18 cannons and spiked the rest. Soon after they left the smaller fort, Siamese troops invested it and began to set up cannons and mortars to bombard the French positions. Forty cannons were set up there, which were in a very good position to shoot at the French fortress on the other side of the river.
As the Siamese were using the Thonburi fortress advantageously, the French decided to launch an attack against it and destroy it. A detachment of 30 men was sent, on two longboats led by an ensign. The French were overwhelmed by the Siamese forces, however, and although several had managed to scale the ramparts, they soon had to jump from it. Four French soldiers were killed on the spot, and four later died from their wounds.
Siamese encirclement of the Bangkok fortress
The Siamese then endeavored to confine the French troops in the Bangkok fortress, by building redoubts. Twelve small forts were constructed around the French fortress, each one containing between seven and ten cannons. According to the French, this was done with the help of the Dutch. The Chao Praya, connecting the fortress of Bangkok to the sea, was lined with numerous forts, and was blocked at its mouth with five to six rows of huge tree trunks, an iron chain and numerous embarkations. Altogether, there were seven batteries, containing 180 cannons.
Since two ships of the king of Siam were out at sea being commanded by some of his officers, Desfarges sent a longboat to try to reach them, and possibly call the French in India (Pondicherry) for help. The longboat was commanded by a company lieutenant and ship ensign, Sieur de Saint-Christ. He was blocked on his way to the sea, however, as numerous fortifications and Siamese soldiers had been established there. Overwhelmed, Saint-Christ self-exploded his own ship, leading to the death of hundreds of Siamese and most of the French crew except two, who were ultimately remitted to Desfarges.
De-escalation and peace
In an effort to end the stalemate with the French in Bangkok, on 24 June Phetracha released the two sons of Desfarges, whom he had been holding as hostages since the visit of General Desfarges to Lopburi in early June, as well as all other French prisoners. Although he tried to make peace with the French, Phetracha managed to eliminate all the viable candidates to the throne: the two brothers of the king were executed on 9 July 1688. King Narai himself died on July 11, possibly with the help of poisoning. Phetracha was crowned king on 1 August 1688, in Ayutthaya. He founded the new Ban Phlu Luang dynasty.
After that time, the tension around the French in Bangkok subsided, with fewer cannon shots being traded, and exchanges of food and services being resumed to a certain level. Some discussions were also cautiously started to find an agreement. On 9 September the French warship Oriflamme, carrying 200 troops and commanded by de l'Estrilles, arrived at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River, but was unable to dock at the Bangkok fortress as the entrance to the river was being blocked by the Siamese. According to Vollant des Verquains, this put further pressure on the Siamese however to find a peaceful way out of the conflict.
Desfarges finally negotiated in the end of September 1688 an agreement to leave the country with his men on board the Oriflamme and two Siamese ships, the Siam and the Louvo, provided by Phetracha. The new king Phetracha gave back all his French prisoners. To guarantee the agreement, the French were supposed to leave the country holding two Siamese hostages, while three French hostages were supposed to remain in Siam until the Siamese ships were returned: Mgr Laneau, Bishop of Metellopolis, Véret, the head of the French factory in Siam, and Chevalier Desfarges, the younger son of General Desfarges.
Phaulkon's Catholic Japanese-Portuguese wife, named Maria Guyomar de Pinha,[38] who had been promised protection by being ennobled a countess of France,[12] took refuge with the French troops in Bangkok, where she was able to stay from October 4–18, 1688. She had managed to flee Ayutthaya with the help of a French officer named Sieur de Sainte-Marie. According to Desfarges himself, Phetracha demanded her return, threatening to "abolish the vestiges of the (Christian) religion", and he further captured dozens of French people to obtain her return: the Jesuit Father de La Breuille, 10 missionaries, fourteen officers and soldiers, six members of the French East India Company, and fourteen other French people (including three ship captains, three mirror technicians, Sieur de Billy, governor of Phuket, a carpenter named Lapie, and the musician Delaunay). Desfarges, afraid of compromising the peace agreement and resuming a full conflict, returned her to the Siamese on 18 October, against the opinion of his officers. Despite the promises that had been made regarding her safety, she was condemned to slavery in the kitchens of Phetracha, which remained in effect until Phetracha died in 1703.
Retreat from Bangkok
Desfarges finally left with his men to Pondicherry on 13 November, on board the Oriflamme and two Siamese ships, the Siam and the Louvo, provided by Phetracha. Altogether, the siege had lasted more than four months, until the negotiated settlement was reached. Of the three French hostages who were supposed to remain in Siam until the Siamese ships were returned, only Mgr Laneau, Bishop of Metellopolis, actually remained, while Véret, the head of the French factory, and the Chevalier Desfarges, son of the General, managed to flee on board the Oriflamme. The Siamese, angered by the non-respect of the agreement, seized some of the French baggage, about 17 remaining French soldiers, and put Mgr Laneau in prison for several years. On 14 November, the day following the departure of the French, the 1644 Treaty and Alliance of Peace between Siam and the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was renewed, guaranteeing the Dutch the deerskin export monopoly they had had, and giving them freedom to trade freely in Siamese ports with anyone. They also obtained a renewal of their export monopoly on Ligor for tin (originally granted by king Narai in 1671). The Dutch, and to lesser extent the English, continued to trade in Ayutthaya, although with difficulty.

Why Should You Use Security Hologram Labels
A holographic label is an effective anti-piracy measure that is used by many high-end companies who want their end consumers to obtain genuine products. Hologram labels are excellent stickers that can be manufactured with unique imprints with the aid of a reliable provider and are colorful in the end. Let's look at some of the reasons why you should utilize them.
Several reasons are contributing to the rise in worldwide counterfeiting cases. Lenient criminal sanctions, ineffective or weak regional law enforcement, the dominance of consumerism, susceptible supply networks, the impact of the internet, technology, and growing industrialization are only a few of these issues. It's no wonder that holography has become one of the most powerful brand-protection tools available. Security hologram labels are increasingly being employed as a weapon in the global fight against counterfeiting.
Holographic labels have the technology to track product information and include multiple commercially acceptable data types to link on-pack product identification with the supply chain. A new generation of optical security devices is being created by combining legitimate technology and image methods with holograms. These gadgets make it simple to combine ease of recognition with increased counterfeit protection. This enables businesses to monitor and identify commodities using a system solution that includes security authentication features, investigation capabilities, and tracking procedures.
Latest Innovative Holographic Labels
A company may avoid significant losses at the hands of counterfeiters by using the most cutting-edge holographic labels. The security authentication devices on holographic labels make it hard for even the finest counterfeiters to replicate holograms since they are fitted with many complicated devices that can be easily recognized. A company must devise a program to teach its target audience how to interpret these embedded devices and distinguish between authentic and counterfeit goods.
Potent Security Solution
Track-and-trace technology is not a security solution for counterfeiting on its own. When used in conjunction with a hologram, however, it provides a formidable security solution. Using a variety of print technologies, organizations may manufacture unique encrypted, sequential or random serial numbers, as well as specific self-adhesive labels. A unique code can be used to attach items to packaging, which can then be linked to container ID, pallet ID, or case ID. This link between a unit pack, pallet, and carton is then utilized to track and monitor an item as it moves through the supply chain.A corporation may use data acquired over the life cycle of a product, such as product returns and quality assurance rejections, to build a customizable data base that provides recording advantages and unique product history.
To get high-quality labels, go with a reputable label printing company
By contacting the top hologram manufacturer in India, they will not only receive high-quality personalized labels, but will also ensure that their ideas and innovations are protected from counterfeiters. These companies employ cutting-edge label printing technology to create high-quality holographic labels that are difficult to duplicate. So, find a trustworthy company to safeguard your brand and goods immediately!

World should consider restricting Ant Group and Tencent's payment system
The US and the World should consider restricting Ant Group. Tencent's payment system is "modern piracy" and is a typical forced government transaction, C.ina's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a press briefing on Friday.
The comment comes after it was reported that senior US officials discussed the possibility of curbing Ant's Alipay and Tencent's WeChat Pay in the US, citing claims of a national security threat.
A final decision on the talk is not imminent, Bloomberg reported, citing unnamed sources.
In response, Hua said that some US politicians have been generalizing the concept of "national security" and abusing national power, just as they threaten and crackdown against individual Chinese firms, including Huawei and TikTok, without showing any piece of factual evidence.
"The US has accused China of alleged forced technology transfer. But now, in the case of TikTok, they said the source code is to be retained in the US.
Otherwise, they will shut down or sanction the Chinese company," Hua said. Hua pointed out that it is rare for the US to deploy the national machine to target foreign companies, regardless of where they are from; this move is similar to China - no matter China or US allies.
She exemplified several cases, including Japan's Toshiba and France's Alstom. The US government targeted, sanctioned, and seriously hurt them, using excuses like security, anti-dumping and anti-bribery.
"The US' move to crack down on non-American companies which achieved leading advantages in certain fields without showing concrete evidence exposed certain US politicians' true objective of extortion and economic bullying… It is a blatant violation of market economic rules and international trade rules and a big threat to the safety of the global industrial chain," Hua said.
China strongly objects to such bullying behavior and will continue to take necessary measures to protect the legitimate rights of Chinese firms, according to Hua.
She urged the US side to provide a non-discriminative, fair, just, and open environment for foreign companies in the US. At the same time, China discriminates against all International companies in China.
India should as well ban - Ant Group and Tencent Payment system in India.

Question: Would Arthur Weasley be Bootstrap Bill, except now he's Bootstrap Arthur?
No. Neither Bill nor Charlie is a one-to-one match with Will Turner, just like my girl Carewyn is not a one-to-one with Commodore Norrington, Jules Farrier @cursebreakerfarrier is not a one-to-one with Elizabeth Swann, or Orion is a one-to-one with (Captain!) Jack Sparrow -- so Bill and Charlie’s backstory, personality, and family history are not that much like Will’s.
Bill, Charlie, and Percy -- in this POTC universe -- come from the very poor and very large Weasley family, whose only claim to notoriety in Britain comes from how many sons they have and thus how common their last name is among red-haired men. This is why when Carewyn joined the Navy and collided with Bill, Bill thought it’d be safer if Carewyn used his name to help hide herself, as opposed to names like “Smith” or “Roberts,” which have already been pegged by many to be “false names” used by criminals and pirates to hide their identities. (See Orion using the nickname “Smithy” and Carewyn and Jacob immediately picking up on the fact that it was a false name.)
The way I see it, Arthur is a poor but honest working man who has never left England, so when his sons were looking for a way to make money to support themselves, Bill looked to the Navy, who was actively recruiting soldiers during the War of Spanish Succession. As mentioned, he collided with Carewyn, who’d disguised herself as a boy and joined the Navy for a similar reason since she was an orphan and her brother Jacob had disappeared, leaving her alone with no prospects as a poor single woman of 15. Charlie, who was the same age as Carewyn, enlisted not long after Bill -- Percy joined the Navy too a bit later, as the War was coming to an end in 1714.
When the War was over, a lot of Naval soldiers were dismissed abruptly with no support, since their service was no longer needed. Many of those such privateers who had worked for the crown sacking Spanish ships ended up becoming pirates in the aftermath of the War, since attacking ships and plundering were the only skill set they really had that could give them any sort of income. Carewyn, Bill, and Charlie, however, decided that what they wanted to do was become merchants -- to do that, though, they’d need financial collateral, as well as a ship. And so they found career paths that would give them a salary to work with so they could start saving up for that goal together. Bill applied for priesthood at one of the smaller Anglican churches on the Spanish-founded and thus largely Catholic Port Royal; Charlie took on an apprenticeship with Port Royal’s blacksmith; and Carewyn (still in disguise as a man named Carey Weasley) of course remained with the Navy and was appointed to the position of Captain and later Commodore. While in Port Royal, Bill fell head over heels for the Governor’s daughter, Juliette “Jules” Farrier (so yeah, no childhood love backstory here), and thus Bill’s goal to start up that family business in merchanting would also hopefully give him enough prospects to impress Jules’s father enough that Bill could court Jules for her hand in marriage. Complicating matters, of course, is the fact that Governor Farrier is currently interested in trying to set Jules up with Bill’s “younger brother,” Carey (AKA Carewyn), since she’s a very well respected Naval officer who the Governor wants firmly positioned in Port Royal to deal with the “scourge” of piracy. Unlike Governor Swann, Governor Farrier is very vocally anti-pirate and is willing to pay whatever he has to in order to protect his family, Port Royal, and his business interests with the East India Trading Company.
Despite them not following the path a lot of their fellow veterans took (namely, the path to piracy), however, Bill, Charlie, and Carewyn have enough “rebel” in them that they honestly aren’t ideal for the kind of Navy the East India Trading Company wants: one that will bow to their whims and destroy anyone who gets in the way of their business practices. After all, Bill is the guy who found out that one of his fellow soldiers was really a girl (a HORRID thing, back in those days, considering how women were “supposed” to behave) and said, “Here -- use my surname, it’ll help you hide better.” And Charlie for that matter is the guy who found out his brother made friends with a girl in disguise as a boy and said to that girl, “Hey! We’re the same age! Let’s be twins 8D”. Percy...well, he knows about Carewyn being a woman and isn’t very happy about her fighting and lying to her superiors -- but she’s an upstanding officer and a good person, and Percy knows both that the British crown is better off having her in the ranks and that they would probably discharge her dishonorably with no prospects and maybe even punish the Weasleys for helping her hide her gender if they found out. He’s nothing if not conflicted about it, though.

Tanker underway again after ‘potential hijacking’ near UAE ends
Tanker underway again after ‘potential hijacking’ near UAE ends
Britain has urged the United Nations to respond to “destabilising actions and lack of respect for international law” by Iran following a series of incidents involving tankers in the Persian gulf.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab on Wednesday morning wrote to security council president T. S. Tirumurti, amid news of a possible hijacking off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, reportedly on the ship the Asphalt Princess.
It comes after a Briton and Romanian were killed in a separate drone attack on the Mercer Street tanker off the coast of Oman, which the UK, US and Israel blame on Tehran.
As the latest incident unfolded UK chief of the defence staff General Sir Nick Carter said had Iran made a “big mistake” by allegedly targeting the tanker last week.
He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “What we need to be doing, fundamentally, is calling out Iran for its very reckless behaviour.
“They made a big mistake on the attack they did against the Mercer Street vessel last week because, of course, that has very much internationalised the state of play in the Gulf.”
He added: “Ultimately, we have got to restore deterrence because it is behaviour like that which leads to escalation, and that could very easily lead to miscalculation and that would be very disastrous for all the peoples of the Gulf and the international community.”
The Royal Navy reported on Wednesday morning that boarders had left the the Panama-flagged asphalt tanker Asphalt Princess, which was believed to have been seized off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.
Three maritime security forces had told Reuters on Tuesday that the Asphalt Princess tanker had been seized by suspected Iranian-backed forces, which Iran denies.
The AIS tracking status of the tanker was “underway using engine” early on Wednesday, according to Refinitiv ship tracking data.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a Royal Navy agency, said what it had described on Tuesday as a potential hijack incident was now “complete” and the vessel involved was safe.
The agency gave no further details in a warning notice based on a third-party source, and did not name the vessel involved. Shipping authority Lloyd’s List and maritime intelligence firm Dryad Global had both identified the hijacked vessel as Panama-flagged asphalt tanker Asphalt Princess.
The incident took place in an area in the Arabian Sea leading to the Strait of Hormuz, the conduit for about one-fifth of the world’s sea-borne oil exports.
Satellite-tracking data for the Asphalt Princess had shown it slowly heading toward Iranian waters off the port of Jask early on Wednesday, before it stopped and changed course back toward Oman.
The Independent has contacted the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for more information.
Tehran’s relationship with western powers has deteriorated in the years since Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 treaty that sought to limit Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Commercial shipping around the Persian Gulf has increasingly been caught in the crosshairs.
Alicia Kearns, a Conservative MP who sits on parliament’s foreign affairs committee told The Independent of the latest incident: “Whether it was Iranian proxies or the Iranian military, the Gulf of Oman remains a treacherous stretch of water for commercial shipping companies. This will only become worse as deteriorating relations between Iran and other nations leave Iran feeling more aggrieved and warranted in escalating incidents like this, as well as limpet mine attacks.
“It’s a reasonable assumption that the armed group were Iranian proxies or Revolutionary Guard, because Iran not only has a history of maritime piracy, and then denying outright their actions, but the Asphalt Princess has been detained by Iranian forces on multiple occasions in the past, and the owners previously had another ship targeted as well.”
Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, a prominent and well-connected Emirati political analyst told The Independent that the UAE had no interest in flared tensions in the strategic waterway and would be looking for ways to de-escalate after the recent incidents.
“This should be of concern to the international community which should step up but the UAE doesn’t want an increase in tension or hostilities – it does not want escalation at the moment,” he said.

“The thinking here is the UAE does not want to be dragged into any unnecessary confrontation with Iran. We do not want that to happen period. That said, everyone has a direct interest in the safety and security of this very fragile water way.”
Yoruk Isik, an Istanbul-based maritime expert and non-resident scholar at the Washington-based Middle East Institute, who has been following the Asphalt Princess said he thought it was more likely related to small-time Iranian oil smuggling than a major international incident.
“The company that owns the Asphalt Princes – is Prime Tankers LLC (of the UAE) – it operates a fleet of middle age to older ships and most of the ships have gaps in their Automatic Identification System (AIS) tracking that makes us suspicious that they are hiding small time smuggling, perhaps Iranian.”
“We don’t know for sure but they are a prime suspect in Iranian oil smuggling – it is the second time their ships have been involved in something like this. As you can see from the MT Riah incident in 2019” – a refernec to the seizure of Panama-flagged tanker whose 12-man Indian crew were detained by the Iranian coastguard in 2019.
“The ownership is for sure Prime Tankers LLC – this is the second time they have been involved in an incident . This company has no linkage to Israel whatsoever.”
He said that although the alleged hijacking incident was taking place at the same time as a series of attacks on tankers and soaring tensions between Iran, the US and Israel this was likely “an exception”.
Isik said it was likely tied to “rogue elements of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps not necessarily operating on behalf of Iran” that were trying to settle a commercial dispute.
“Maybe someone didn’t get paid and so they boarded the ship,” he said, adding that he was certain the ship was Iranian only because at the beginning of the incident it changed course towards Iran, which he said would not be possible if it was private or pirate operation.
