MelJay as a ship might as well not exist because there is no actual Mel and Jayce content without Viktor getting thrown in. I seriously don’t believe people genuinely care about MelJay on its own. This isn’t even me coming for MelJayVik, but you can always tell which part of the poly ship people actually care about. If MelJay really had that much appeal, it wouldn’t be completely overshadowed every time.

Mel is nothing more than a prop for JayVik, and at that point, people might as well just leave her out entirely. Nobody actually cares about her relationship with Jayce on its own. Mel is just there to be the convenient third wheel, used when necessary and discarded when she isn’t. If people really valued her dynamic with Jayce, we’d see it, but we don’t. I can barely find any MelJay art that doesn’t include him.

We all know that MelJay tag is for Mel x Jayce, JayVik tag is for Jayce x Viktor and MelVik tag is for Mel x Viktor...right? We all are aware that they're not meant to be extra tags for MelJayVik...right?

When I go in either MelJay/JayVik/MelVik ship tag, I expect the content in it to focus on the two (not three) characters in a romantic light. I shouldn't be scrolling past post after post taged as MelJayVik (since I filtered the tag) and block posts users so that I would come across less MelJayVik posts in the tag

could write an essay on the tragic irony of that scene (where mel is talking to jayce over Viktor who is dismantling jinx’s bomb) but like… in brief??

people are saying she’s being classist or ableist in leaving viktor out of the conversation and while that dimension to the power differential between them is definitely there (and I could write a whole lot on that too!) i just don’t think it’s the main reason why that conversation goes the way it does.

mel doesn’t speak to viktor because she is suggesting the goddamn militarisation of hextech. viktor is a principled scientist.

rewatch the scene closely. mel watches both jayce and viktor at first. while explaining the situation. while Viktor is dismantling the bomb, while giving the council’s opinion. but she stops engaging with viktor as soon as he asks her:

- V : “wait what are you suggesting?”

this is where she stops talking to him. because what she wants is the goddamn militarisation of hextech. to use on the undercity where viktor is from, no less. mel says straight up:

- M: “we should prepare our own countermeasures.”

it is right there. i don’t understand where the ‘manipulation’ conversation is coming in with this scene when she isn’t even attempting to speak around the violent measures she is willing to support. mel is being quite upfront about it. to me this was mel’s most ‘ambessa’ moment. it makes perfect narrative sense that in the episode following this one we meet ambessa and get to see mel’s relationship to martial law and Noxus’ kinds of state sanctioned violence that far exceed the brutality we have seen even piltover direct at zaun.

mel knows she cannot speak to viktor about this because… and i don’t know how many times I can say this… it’s a blunt proposal for the godamn militarisation of hextech.

of course she anticipates viktor’s reaction because she’s intelligent enough to know that his reaction is that of any principled scientist. before anyone can get a word in edgewise we see viktor immediately, vehemently trying to shut the idea down:

- V: “absolutely not. That is not what we created hextech for.”

jayce brings up heimerdinger here too and says he would never do it which is so telling. heimerdinger was a council member, yes, but he is first and foremost a scientist who adheres to science’s ethics and academic rigour (albeit to a pedantic degree because he has no real concept of human life spans).

in this scene viktor is rightfully much more pissed off at jayce. that he even considers the proposal is a testament to just how much more absorbed in mel’s world of state politics he has become as opposed to viktor’s one of science. after mel has left viktor scoffs and says:

- “Ridiculous. You cannot be considering this.[…] We’re scientists. Not soldiers. We agreed hextech is to improve lives not take them.”

a large part of what is so tragic about the machine herald storyline is that these tables have entirely turned. of the many, many mel and viktor parallels i think it’s often overlooked that it’s mel who becomes increasingly opposed to endorsing war and militarisation, ultimately killing her own mother, the symbolic figurehead of both, while it’s viktor who ends up creating the very thing he was insulted to even think of with hextech. an army that can’t die… used by ambessa no less.

Whooo boy I’m kinda sad. I’m having to block the MelJay tag on multiple social media sites now because 90% of what crosses my dash gets hateful to JayVik. It’s WILD.

Like I’ve been an early complainer about how people treat Mel in JayVik spaces but I can most of the time enjoy JayVik works without Mel slander or MelJay or MelJayVik slander being present.

If the MelJay art or edit or something isn’t flat out wild about Viktor (in ways that I’ve seen get wildly homophobic, ableist, and even some that are racist regarding the use of anti-eastern-European/slavic imagery- and in a way that even I, someone who is just marginally aware of that stuff due to paying attention to WWII propaganda imagies in history, *reeled back from in shock* because wtf???? I gotta admit I did not predict that, like, we really reaching for some out of left field ways to be bigoted here), then it gets wild in the comments with bashing the JayVik ship.

Meanwhile I really do have to go searching for comments bashing MelJay in JayVik posts. Usually the issues I find are more subtle in some comics or characterization of Mel in some fics. Outside of the occasional really bad take demonizing her but that’s like… 1/20 fics I’ve read and less in terms of takes I’ve seen. It happens, but in low enough frequency I can block the individual and still enjoy the tag.

Like the fact I am now needing to block an entire tag of a ship I enjoy and would love to see stuff of because it gets toxic enough of another ship I enjoy is insane, ngl. This has never happened before.

It's worse than that. Silco and Vander were clearly in a struggle together. Part of a political movement, and they are leaders of their city. The brother-in-arms apply.

But Jayce complains to his girlfriend... While with his head in her lap... Saying "Viktor is like a brother to me".

There is none of the implications that Jayce sees Viktor as a brother in some struggle or part of some greater brotherhood, and he's saying this to the woman he's in a relationship with!

That's perfectly fine for me, because I have more than one track in my mind and I enjoy many types of jayvik and meljayce and meljayvik situationships.

But being an anti over the very heavily implied Zaundads, that then gets canonized, is like throwing the stupidest of hissy fits. Shipping jayvik at the same time is the most stupid mental gymnastics possible.

It's fine not to ship them. They're soo fucking minor and background. Get a life and make tiktoks about the ships you like, imaginary or otherwise.

okay i have to speak my truth for a second: i do not care for how much hate silco x vander is getting on tiktok. its okay if you interpret their relationship as brotherly, you don’t have to ship it. BUT calling ppl proshippers for liking it makes no sense at all?? YES they refer to each other as brothers in arms but so do jayvik? and no one bats an eye at them

I’m so tired of seeing “just block the tags” every time someone complains about shippers cross-tagging. I already have the tags blocked, but that doesn’t stop it from being frustrating. When I scroll through the MelJay tag, most of it is filtered posts from #JayVik and #MelJayVik. It’s all over the tag.

And when you ask JayVik and MelJayVik shippers to stop tagging MelJay in their posts, they just don’t listen. You don’t need to tag every ship you like in one post—especially when not everyone cares about your poly ship. And JayVik shippers? Please stop tagging MelJay if your post is only about JayVik.

It’s annoying all around, but every time someone points it out, all people ever say is “block the tags.” How about instead, just stop tagging MelJay in posts that aren’t about MelJay? That would solve the problem for everyone.

meljayvik shippers are actually the most annoying shippers in the fandom 🤷🏽 its great to like the idea of them as a poly ship, but too many of them try to make it seem like the show or these three characters wouldve been better off with canon meljayvik despite the fact that Viktor and Mel rarely interact and when they do it doesnt seem too friendly. Its fine to like a ship that has no basis in canon guys, you dont have to delude yourselves that there was any love between these three in canon or that this is somehow more meaningful than meljay or jayvik alone. I understand the desire for poly representation but it just seems so ..... out of place in the story of arcane.

considering how many people didn't like jayce's finale speech, I'm sure plenty of people would also complain about jayce randomly being in a poly relationship with a noxian and zaunite. especially because we see nothing to do with polyamory anywhere else in the show, in the three regions that were shown to us

JaySkyVik, SkyJayVik, or whatever tag people use for this ship—I think it makes way more sense as a poly ship than MelJayVik. In my mind, Sky, Jayce, and Viktor are actual lab partners, even though Sky wasn’t shown around Jayce. I don’t know, but it just feels like they fit better as a poly ship compared to MelJayVik. Mel, she’s a forced inclusion because she had sex with Jayce.

Most MelJayVik shippers don’t really care about MelJay or even Mel as a character, but just use her because of her connection to Jayce. I’m not trying to be hateful or anything, but it’s pretty obvious which ship and characters they’re really focusing on the most. They put more energy into Jayce and Viktor’s relationship than they do into MelJay, and it feels like Mel is just kind of an afterthought. It’s just obvious.
