An older article but worth sharing in light of an overrated white man who thinks his opinion means something because he's good at sports
By Kate Stringer March 25, 2018
March is National Women’s History Month. In recognition, The 74 is sharing stories of remarkable women who transformed U.S. education.
A self-described young, stuttering child, Joe Biden credits a group of women for building his confidence and giving him 12 years of education that would lead him to become vice president of the United States. “You have no idea of the impact that you have on others,” Biden told a group of Catholic nuns on a social justice tour of the United States in 2014.
Biden is just one of millions of Americans, many of them underprivileged, educated in Catholic schools, a system that would have been impossible if not for the generations of dedicated religious female educators. Working for very low wages, these women changed lives, moving large immigrant communities into the middle class and — though too often given short shrift by the male-dominated Catholic Church — opened doors to higher education for women.
“Teaching is a critical part of the sisters’ mission of education because we believe, in short, that education can save the world,” said Sister Teresa Maya, president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. “It empowers people, it broadens horizons, it deepens values, it engages conversation between faith and culture.”
Catholic schooling in the U.S. dates back as far as the early 1600s, as priests and nuns arrived in the colonies and established schools, orphanages, and hospitals. John Carroll — elected the first U.S. bishop in 1789 — pushed for religious schools to educate American Catholic children living in a predominantly Protestant country. As priests and brothers began creating schools for boys, it was left to the nuns to teach girls.
Elizabeth Ann Seton, recognized in the Catholic Church as the first native-born U.S. saint, started the Sisters of Charity, an order that opened separate parochial schools for families of poor and wealthy girls, in the early 1800s. Some consider these the first Catholic parochial schools in the U.S.
By the middle of the century, Catholics from Ireland, Italy, and Poland began immigrating to the United States and swelling the ranks of local churches, and in the early 1900s, bishops called for every parish to educate its children — a response to widespread anti-Catholic sentiment, a need to help Americanize the new arrivals, and a desire for an alternative to public schools where children prayed the Protestant version of the Lord’s Prayer and read the King James version of the Bible.
Most of this work was carried out by the nuns, who took vows of poverty and could teach children for very low wages.
“Without the nuns, you could not have had the parochial school system that this country has had,” said Maggie McGuinness, professor of religion at La Salle University.
Catholic schools were also invaluable in alleviating overcrowded public schools as populations surged in major cities, and giving immigrants a boost up the economic ladder, said Ann Marie Ryan, associate professor of education at Loyola University Chicago.
“(The nuns) moved entire groups of people into the middle class, which is a substantial feat in and of itself,” she said.
Still, anti-Catholic sentiment proved pervasive. As Catholic groups tried to obtain public funding for their schools in the late 1800s, states began passing Blaine amendments, which restricted state legislatures from using funds for religious schools. Today, 37 states have these laws.
Oregon even instituted a law, backed by the Ku Klux Klan, that prohibited students from attending Catholic school. The U.S. Supreme Court struck this down in Pierce vs. The Society of Sisters in 1925.
As the sisters fought for their students’ rights to be educated in Catholic schools, they also found themselves fighting against the church patriarchy for their own pursuit of higher education. As Ryan wrote, “The Catholic Church’s hierarchy in the USA was worried about the movement toward increased independence for women in this era.” To fill a need for higher education among Catholic-educated girls, more nuns began seeking Ph.D.s so they could lead Catholic colleges for women. But this pursuit of independence didn’t sit well with their governing bishops, and they pushed back.
For example, in the 1930s and ’40s, the archdiocesan board of Chicago mandated that nuns could not travel outside a convent or school without being accompanied by another woman, and even went so far as to tell the president of a neighboring college that nuns should not show up to their classes without a female companion. They were also not to go outside after sunset.
Mission statements of all-girls Catholic schools reflected the sisters’ challenge of balancing what the church considered the natural role of women with many young women’s desires for independence, Ryan wrote. When the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary established Mundelein College in 1930 in Chicago, they crafted goals that showed these dual perspectives: “(Mundelein education is) practical, preparing the student for successful achievement in the economic world,” but also “conservative, holding fast to the time-honored traditions that go to the fashioning of charming and gracious womanhood.”
“(The nuns) highlighted and equally lauded their graduates’ choices to marry, seek employment, enter a religious community, or attend college,” Ryan wrote.
In her research, Ryan found Catholic high school yearbooks that revealed what this opportunity meant to young women. At Chicago’s Catholic Mercy High School in 1927, the students published quotes from Tennyson’s poem The Princess: “Here might we learn whatever men are taught…knowledge is now no more a fountain sealed.” Sixty percent of Mercy’s graduates around this time attended college (nationally, female enrollment in higher education was 44 percent).
At a time when women were barred from many universities, nuns became their advocates. Catholic sisters established 150 religious colleges for women in the United States, starting in the late 1800s. Before coeducation of men and women became the norm, more women were earning degrees from Catholic colleges than those run by other religious groups, according to The Boston Globe. And the nuns’ own pursuit of higher education broke glass ceilings: The first woman to obtain a Ph.D. in computer science was a nun: Sister Mary Kenneth Keller, in 1965.
“They were role models,” McGuinness said. “If you went to Trinity University in D.C. in 1897 and had teachers who had doctorates, maybe you think, ‘I could do that, too.’”
Maya certainly experienced that when an older nun, Sister Rosa Maria Icaza, told her what she had to go through to earn her doctorate from Catholic University. Because enrollment was limited to men, the nun had to sit outside the classroom, near the door, rather than inside with her male classmates. “I thought, ‘Thanks to a woman like this, I could get a Ph.D.,’” Maya said.
Today, however, the number of religious leaders in the Catholic Church is declining, including nuns. From 1965 to 2017, the number of sisters decreased from 179,000 to 45,000, according to the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate. And even in the face of this decline, the women who join the religious life are still finding themselves under fire from within their own church. As recently as 2012, American nuns were accused by the Vatican for being radical feminists.
The loss of nuns as a teaching force is one reason running Catholic schools is more financially challenging than ever before, Maya said. Catholic school enrollment peaked in the 1960s and has dropped significantly since then. In 1965, about 5 million children attended Catholic elementary and secondary schools. In 2017, enrollment was just under 2 million. The number of Catholic schools was cut in half, from 11,000 to 6,000, during that same time period.
Catholic schools today have been experimenting with different business models to survive, from the Cristo Rey schools that utilize student work study to help pay for tuition to Philadelphia Catholic schools that have been using tax-credit scholarships and voucher programs to pay tuition for poor families.
And their students no longer come primarily from their local church — many see Catholic schools as a better alternative to poor-performing urban schools. “In many major cities, Catholic schools are a parent’s best hope for both Catholic and non-Catholic kids,” McGuinness said.
Maya said she is proud of the work Catholic schools are continuing to do to reach the children who need it most.
“The sisters were always teaching the populations in the margins,” Maya said. Without these women, “I don’t think the U.S. Catholic education system would exist the way we know it.”

C'mon, I cannot be the only that after all the shit they put Maya through with the demotion and the way Beckett was harassing Maya at work that thought that bottle of whiskey was well-deserved revenge?
She didn't force Beckett to drink. That was on him. I would've given Sullivan something too! Like, hire a PI, get photos of him and Ross and put all around the internet, the Stations, etc. If you're going down, bring them with you.
Like, why did everybody forgive Sullivan?
Honestly, there a lots of fingers to be pointed about Maya's breakdown.
Hello OP!
Sorry that I replied to this a little late, but no, you're not alone.
Although I wouldn't encourage Maya's actions, I understand why she felt compelled to do so, especially with how she was raised by Lane Bishop.
I also partially disagree with Ben's "you did that because you were in a bad place," and for Maya to "apologize when you feel comfortable" because it wasn't entirely Maya's fault. They saw how Maya was being bullied by Beckett - what did they do for their former captain who was demoted for saving a kid's life? NOTHING.
Of course, one would argue that Maya could learn from Andy's more diplomatic approach or Sullivan's more political (read: cunning) approach. Or maybe , she could've been patient for slightly longer, and things would've unraveled itself. But Maya has been patient - from being ignored by McCallister, bullied by Beckett, and unfairly lectured by Ross. In one of my posts, I've explained what could be Maya's thought process behind the blackmail (and probably why she wouldn't send PI on Sullivan and Ross) and that was the start of her... downward spiral.
So... should Maya give that bottle as revenge? No. If she is as heroic and noble as Andy Herrera, she shouldn't.
But Maya is an anti-hero. The twisted protagonist with a dark side. One who has been treated unfairly and has been "nice" for too long, and without Carina in her corner, she was... wounded. Feral. Desperate.
So, as far as Maya was concerned, Beckett was not an alcoholic when she gifted the bottle to him, as per Ross' wise and fair evaluation. So, a little whiskey to celebrate should be fine. (Maya's smirk when she left the room was sinfully satisfying.)
Should Maya apologize? Objectively, she doesn't have to. Conscientiously? She can. But it's not her fault. I hope we can delve a little more on her self-blame tendency, which is common amongst people who are recovering from traumas.
Sullivan's case? Honestly? Imo, it is just how the system/society treats men and women differently.
If a man fights for his rights for power, he is passionate and driven.
If a woman does the same thing, she is reckless and selfish.
Why? Because by social norm, women would generally become the "healer" while men are demanded to be the "hunter" - fascinatingly, it's something that is almost coded in our brains. But society and gender roles have changed so much that our brain, weirdly, couldn't adapt to it, hence creating biases that we subconsciously practice.
As "healers" (e.g., homemaker, mothers, etc), women are expected to be role models who are patient, forgiving, respectable, loving, optimistic, and the list goes on. Believe it or not, these are some of the traits associated with maternal qualities. Phew.
As "hunters" (e.g., earners, husbands, etc), men are expected to be goal-driven and focused because their main role is, basically, to go out, find supplies, and get their ass home, safely. They are expected to protect their home and dependents - by all means, at all cost.
But centuries have passed, and society has evolved. Even gender roles have shifted now, and the old norm doesn't seem applicable anymore. BUT! Our mind doesn't know that. (Recommending "The Idiot Brain" by Dean Burnett if you are interested in this weird conundrum.)
It's frustrating. But... *shrugs*
I never liked Sullivan after what he did to Maya, and I don't think I ever will.
I think I am rambling... so I'll stop here. 😆😂

Stand up | A station 19 fanfiction
Summary: For a few weeks now, Carina has been upset about something, but won’t talk about it with Maya. The brunette has reassured Maya that it has nothing to do with her, and that she is incredibly happy. When Maya finally finds out the reason, it breaks her heart.
A/N: As most of you know, there are some very pro-life, and anti-lgbtq+ laws being passed in Italy right now. This is a fic that explores Carina’s feelings regarding that, taking place about 3 months after the firefighters ball.
Warnings: Talk of homophobia, transphobia, and pro-life people, along with abortion and a person’s right to chose. Please don’t read if not comfortable. Otherwise, happy reading :)
-
Carina has been upset for weeks.
Maya was immediately worried that she did something, but Carina assured her that it is nothing to do with Maya or their relationship. But still refused to talk to Maya about it.
So, Maya merely tried to her best to comfort her wife, despite having no clue why Carina is so upset in the first place.
Maya gently knocks on the door to Andy’s office, and the captain tells her to come in.
“Hey cap. We’re about to have lunch to celebrate Jack officially being back. Want to join?” Maya offers.
Jack has officially come back to work on desk duty, after taking five weeks off to recover from his injury at the ball. Needless to say, everyone is thrilled to have him back.
“Yeah, I’ll be down in a few.” Andy replies. Maya goes to leave, but is stopped. “Bishop? What’s going on with you?” Andy questions.
Maya sighs, before shutting the door to the office. “Can I talk to you? As your friend, and not as your lieutenant?”
Andy nods without hesitation. “Of course, we talked about this. Just because I’m captain now doesn’t mean I’m no longer your friend. Come sit.”
Maya sits down, sighing heavily. “Carina has been upset for weeks now, but won’t tell me why, just that it has nothing to do with our relationship or me. But she still refuses to say anything other than that, and I feel helpless because I don’t know how to comfort her if I don’t know what’s wrong.” She explains.
Andy nods sympathetically. “I get it. But hey, just be there for her in every way you can. You know her, you know what she will need. No matter the circumstance. Just be her loving, and caring wife.”
Maya smiles. “Thanks, Andy. You always know what to say.” Andy grins. “It’s part of my charm, Bishop. Let’s go eat.”
Maya laughs as they exit the office.
-
Maya returns home later on, finding Carina on the couch, intently reading her phone. She barely even looks up when Maya opens the door.
“Hey baby. How was work?”
Silence.
“Babe?”
Again, no answer.
“Carina?”
The brunette suddenly snaps out of her daze. “Oh, hi bambina. I didn’t hear you come in.”
Maya chuckles. “I noticed. What are you so engrossed in?”
Carina’s eyes gloss over. Maya immediately comes over to her. “Hey, talk to me. What’s going on, my love?”
Carina merely shows Maya her phone.
Maya sees an article.
Abortion bans.
Same sex marriage will become illegal.
LGBTQ+ parents will have their parental rights taken away.
LGBTQ+ people will no longer have any rights.
64.6 percent of gynecologists refusing to perform abortions.
Refusal to let LGBTQ+ parents be on their child’s birth certificates, no longer recognizing them as their real parents.
Potential banning of the english language.
All happening in Italy.
Carina’s home country. Where she was born, where she grew up, where her brother was born, where her dad and best friend Gabriella currently live.
“Oh baby.” Maya coos. “Is this why you’ve been so upset?” She asks. Carina nods in confirmation.
“When I worked in Italia, I was the only doctor within miles that would perform abortions. So many people would drive and fly miles just to see me in Sicily. There was one other doctor, but she refused to perform abortions on non-binary people and transgender men who still had biological female organs. So many transgender people came to me, begging me to give them an abortion.” Carina explains.
“Maya, we wouldn’t even be recognized as our future babies’ parents. Our marriage would no longer be legal. Our love, our devotion, and our commitment to each other wouldn’t even be recognized!” She continues, her voice becoming louder and more distressed.
“Hey, hey, hey. Take a deep breathe, baby. You’re ok, you’re safe.” Maya murmurs, bringing Carina into her arms as the older women sobs.
“Shh, my love. It’s alright, you’re with me and you’re safe. Let it out.” Maya whispers soothingly, rubbing Carina’s back and occasionally kissing her head gently.
After a few minutes, Carina’s cries dissipate into occasional whimpering. Maya continues her ministrations, combing Carina’s hair with her fingers and tickling her back to calm her down.
“I’m so sorry this is happening, my love.” Maya murmurs. Carina sits up, but still leans on Maya, wiping her tears. “Is there anything we can do, baby? Because as long as it isn’t violent, I’ll be there with you, sweetheart.” Maya promises.
“I’ll have to look into it, bambina. But for now, hold me?” Carina requests, her voice cracking and accent heavy.
Maya smiles sadly. “Always, my love. Always.”
-
“Alright. Now that I’ve said everything I needed to say, Lieutenant Bishop has requested the floor. Bishop?” Andy requests. Maya nods.
“Thank you, Cap. I appreciate you letting me speak to the team today.” Maya begins.
“As we all know, there have been many harmful laws passed regarding what people are allowed to do with their bodies. I say people because although these laws majorly affect women, we can not forget the transgender men and non-binary people who still have biologically female body parts. They are at risk too.” She explains.
“My wife is an OB, and a bringer of life. In turn, because she performs abortions, her life is always at risk. But, things are happening outside of our country that make her feel angry and heartbroken. In Italy, her home country, where she grew up, where her brother was born, and where her best friend and father currently live. Laws that will ban abortions and the necessary reproductive healthcare. 64.6 percent of gynecologists in Italy refuse to perform abortions.” She continues.
“Not only that, but LGBTQ+ Italian citizens are at a great risk. In Italy, Carina and I’s marriage would not be recognized or legal. If Montgomery became a father, as a gay man, he would not be recognized as his child’s father. Same with myself and Carina. Our rights would be taken away, and we would not be on our child’s birth certificate. Now, with that said, Carina did some research and found some Italian born Seattle citizens planning to march in protest of what is going on in their home country, along with the disgusting and dehumanizing pro-life laws going on in our country right now. It is happening tomorrow when we are all off shift. Carina and I would be incredibly honored if you all joined.” Maya finishes.
“I’ll be there, 100 percent. I know Miranda will too.” Ben replies, smiling supportively.
“Same. You and Carina are our family, I’d be honored to support.” Vic says.
“I second that.” Travis grins.
The rest of the team reply with other forms of agreement, all of them agreeing to be there.
“Thank you guys. As your former captain, I’m incredibly proud. As your friend, I am incredibly honored.” Maya grins, unshed tears in her eyes. “Cap?”
Andy squeezes Maya’s shoulder, silently supporting her friend.
“Of course, I expect that you will all be peaceful, and do no harm to yourselves, others, station 19, or SFD.” Andy says firmly.
“Yes, captain.” The team replies.
Andy nods. “19!”
“19!”
-
Maya holds her wife’s hand tightly, holding up her sign.
Her team, her family, surrounds her, along with many people, a lot of whom are of Italian descent.
She feels an arm go around her shoulders, and looks to see Vic. Holding a sign with one arm, her other around Maya.
Carina looks at her lovingly. “I love you, bambina.”
“I love you too, baby.”
-
A/N: Thank you so much for reading. And remember, you are loved, no matter what.

Ok am I the only one who doesn't think we are done with Mason Bishop? I mean really what was the point of bring him back but have no real interaction between him and Maya or Maya and Carina about him? Yes Maya at least knows he is alive but that's it. I mean yeah he was with an anti gay group but given that he ran away from Maya we don't know if it is his true belief. Given that we didn't see a talk between the wives we can't even say they brought him back to show Maya's growth. So yeah I just don't think we have seen the last of Mason good or bad he'll be back

Station19 : 6x02 : Are station19 ok ?
The obvious theme on this episode and the last one is clearly Maya and Jack the two messed up people of this station. But are They ?
TW : mention of sexual assault  Because believe me when i say, Vic is next into spiraling out of control. She being all “ oh Carina married Maya without knowing that she’s a blackmailler” bitch  shut up, you’re next. You know what Karma is ? watch it. , jesus, Vic honey why are you opening up your mouth ? why ? she hide her pregnancy, she spend her time lying and being oblivious and she open her mouth gossiping ? why ? just shut up. That all i have to say. Beside the fact that she is insecure and selfish too. Wanna talk about the time you didn’t care about Theo’s feeling? Your body, your choice, won’t argue it, won’t dispute it, it’s you’re right. When theo talk to her, she didn’t care. And basically theo said “ i cried, because i was hurt you ignore me and left me out”. But Vic espect the other shoe to drop, but why ? Is it because you know that you left him out of you decision ? again your body your choice but at least talk to your patner, say “ listen i don’t want a child right now, maybe  later,  but for now i’m not ready, can you accept that?”
Travis is being out there stating over and over again the same thing while his station encourages him while ignoring what he is saying. Jesus. Travis have always said he want to run for mayor to steal vote from dickson, great name for a great pun. He never said he wanted to be mayor, he said i want to run for mayor so dickson can’t be, can be any other person.
Amusing how Ross use it and the firefighter names to provoke dickson. Jack is just out of control but he has being for a while, for those who missed it, rewatched it will be obvious. dude learn he is a bother an uncle, wanted to rekindle with his foster sibling but failed miserably, understandably i must say, being in the foster system is never kind, he literally admit that he was sexually abused so.. there’s that,  Carina was abuse mentaly and sexually because it was the theme of the day. Sorry but at this point if Maya goes to a therapist and say that her father abused her more than physically i will not be surprise, she start to spiraled after Andy’s attacked, so there’s that.  Beside Carina trying for a child which doesn’t help that Maya is going out of hand and hurting. She’s scared, hurt, fells like being rejected, inside and out, literally. So yeah she’s hurting and still in control somewhat. Watch out for Italian women they are strong. I think that she’s hurt that, her wife doesn’t trust her enough to tell her something as important as the backmailled, but more importantly, why Maya wants to be captain. For her it’s because Maya  have a goal that she have to obtain. But : Something Carina doesn’t get or at least don’t understand, Maya have choose her. Yeah she reverted back to her old self, but Maya have made Carina her priority. Her captaincy is because being a person or people pleaser isn’t easy to get ride off. But Maya did choose her, She doesn’t care if she’s promoted back to probe as long as it’s fair. Her demotion isn’t fair. Her watching sullivan and beckett being at each other throat for the post is just ridiculous at this point. Yeah beckett is sober, allegedly, but how can we know ? Andy did most of the work as much as captain and as a lieutenant. Maya at this point barely care about her job, she cares that she his helping and that her wife is happy, and now ? none of that works. She’s demoted for unfairly reason, she pointed out the obvious ( do we need to talk about the time she call Diane for help for the death of George Floyd because she didn’t know how to help and clearly her team was affected or are we going to ignore that?) She see her team, but right now she can’t see them because the team is a wreck, the team is messed up, all because, she decided that saving a life was more important than a lawsuit, that they would win btw. She was saving a life, like a doctor would do. Like a fucking firefighter is supposed to do. Anyway. She prioritize a life over paper. At what point did fighting fire and being a paramedic come over paper ? i don’t know, ask Travis. He would know either anyway. She did nothing wrong, but she is punish, and right now she is pushed back into her childhood where her father would treat her unfairly and smash a boll into the wall because she help someone in needs. Ring a bell ? If not, re watch. Pretty sure you’ll see it. Someone point out that Maya isn’t that bad, and that her treatment is more or less unfair. She help a life, and got blame for it, she was so aware that she saw what no one else saw, and Ross as long as sullivan deny it, and beckett who was drunk during work, brought out by sullivan got away with it with nothing. Sullivan, beckatt and at this point Ross is in the wrong and they still think they are right.  That communication. And Fuck these people need to talk. Bring Back Diane for the love of god because those people are so not okay.

Two weeks on from the end of the previous story, the puppies are now big enough to take on the world (well, visit Station 19 at least) and Maya's two weeks closer to being allowed back to work. Life is very different now there are five living there, but rather than resenting Mason and the puppies' intrusion in the apartment, or breaking out in hives, Maya was feeling energised and alive in a way she'd never imagined possible before she'd met Carina.
They were still Captain Bishop, Seattle's youngest fire captain and reluctant 'anti-corruption hero', and Dr DeLuca, Grey Sloan's OBGYN 'rockstar' Head of Department, but they were also so much more. They were surrounded by friends who were family and their little brothers, neither of whom were that little any more...and two puppies who, so far at least, hadn't discovered how tasty Italian leather was...
[There is no relationship angst - Maya/Carina are angst free but the *feels* associated with backstory of canon characters generate *feels* that if the writing's worked as with the earlier stories in the series].

Hot take: “Hawkeye” is a funnier, higher-budget version of CW “Arrow”
Arguing points
1) Clint Barton was initially this ruthless, anti-hero vigilante who wore a hood during his crusade on organized crime. As a vigilante, he became infamous for murdering all the criminals he came across. Now that he’s no longer the Hood Ronin, Clint suffers from immense guilt from what he did.
* Speaking of Clint, just like Oliver, he is a no-nonsense, stoic figure who usually plays straight man to his more humorous teammates.
2) Kate Bishop is what you get when you fuse Roy Harper and Thea Queen together (she’s a spoiled rich girl, Clint’s sidekick, and they have a sort of familial-esque relationship).
3) Maya Lopez is Adrian Chase (a villain whose sole motivation is going after the main hero because they killed their father)
4) Lila Barton is Mia Queen (main hero’s daughter who takes up archery). I guess this makes Laura Barton the show’s version of Felicity Smoak? You know, now that I think about it, the Laura-Felicity comparison works because, just like Felicity, Laura’s not a main pairing for Clint in the comics. Clint is usually paired up with Natasha Romanoff or Bobbi Morse, similar to how Oliver Queen is usually paired up with Laurel Lance.
5) Speaking of Nat, I guess this means Natasha is the Laurel Lance/Black Canary of Hawkeye. Which kinda works in a fucked up way since Laurel died in season 4.
6) Big fight scene took place in a warehouse/factory-type setting
7) Rich people problems, specifically on Kate’s side however

4. Arthur Curry aka Aquamn - in the DCEU and some recent adaptations; half White and half Polynesian

6.  Yara Flor aka Wonder Woman - Afro-Indigenous Brazilian
7. Selina Kyle aka Catwoman - Afro Cuban; given her mother has been played by both black and white women and she states of being Cuban in the comics, I see her as Afro Cuban

Hawkeye season 1 thoughts
Finished Hawkeye finally and I have to say it has really surprised me. Of the 4 Disney+ MCU shows, this was easily my least hyped. Not because I don't like Hawkeye but because it just didn't seem to be a show which would have the sort of scale or influence that the other shows do. Loki deal with time variants and time travel, WandaVision dealt with advanced magic and warping of reality, and even TFATWS dealt with the changes in the world post the blip. Hawkeye was lowkey in every sense of the world, with the entire story being set in New York over a period of a few days. In the end, that ends up being to the show's advantage in the same way Ant-Man and Ant-Man & The Wasp ended up being fun small scale adventures. I ended up enjoying Hawkeye quite a lot.
The first couple of episodes are setup. Its definitely a bit too slow to get going, especially given the season is only 6 episodes long. The first episode is mainly Kate Bishop setup and the status quo of Clint's life at the moment. The second episode gets a bit more into Clint trying to clear all the issues but the show really picks up from episode 3 onwards. The introduction of Echo in episode 3, followed by the re-introduction of Yelena at the end of episode 4 really amped things up but episode 3 has a fantastic car chase sequence which showcases the various Arrows that Clint has at its disposal. That is one of the most fun scenes of the movie. Episode 4 is a bit of a step back to breathe as it gets into some personal conversations between Clint and Kate, and Clint teaching Kate some tricks. These episodes also have some enjoyable use of LARPers as they become very integral backup to Clint and Kate, to the point of providing them their final uniforms. The 5th episode ups the anti with the cliffhanger showing the re-introduction of Vincent D'Onofrio as Kingpin. I am not yet certain if this is a rebooted Kingpin or the one from Daredevil. Its great to see him back though. The finale has some fun. It doesn't use Kingpin as much as I had hoped but I assume he will be used in a more significant in the Echo tv show. He's definitely not dead. But the Yelena and Kate elevator fight scene was enormously fun and the Yelena and Clint confrontation was very emotionally satisfying.
The show had a few blemishes. Like I said, they don't really use Kingpin and D'Onofrio as much as I would have liked. Vera Farmiga is also underused despite being an important character towards the end of the season. The pacing is a little inconsistent. They definitely probably could have used another episode or so to flesh out the central conflict. There are some hidden references that didn't amount to much other than a fun easter egg. Like Laura Barton shows abilities and understanding which implies she is more than what she looked which is confirmed by the end of the season that she is Agent 19, a former Agent of SHIELD, known in the comics as Mockingbird, but the show played up the rolex watch which had her id number a fair amount earlier in the season and there is no real payoff for that. I also think the Echo part felt a little rushed. They do a lovely job setting up her past and reason for vengeance but her story changes gears very fast towards the end.
Apart from a few pacing issues and a few underdeveloped characters, the show was a fun and enjoyable ride with some excellent acting. The show also does one thing which Endgame missed out on, which is give a proper emotional sendoff to Natasha. We actually see Clint grieve and we see how much Natasha meant to him. That's why the Yelena and Clint scenes hit hard in the finale because they really feel like two people who are hurting from her loss. The humor also works great and I have to commend the casting for casting Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop. She is an absolute delight in the role, delivering a lot of the humor in the season. I would love to see more of her in future seasons or movies. Alaqua Cox as Maya/Echo is another superb casting choice. I am looking forward to her series because she did an excellent job with it. Jeremy Renner is terrific as he always is in the role. He's seriously underrated. He is playing the straight man in this season a lot but he expresses a lot through tiny gestures. You can feel his weariness, but he's not a grumpy curmudgeon. You see how he becomes fond of Kate and mentors her on small things like her cuts and bruises. He and Hailee have wonderful chemistry together. Fra Free as Kazi is also terrific and he adds a bit of emotional punch to Maya's side of the story. Linda Cardellini makes a welcome return as Laura and I like how we find tidbits throughout the season suggesting she is more than just Clint's wife. Florence Pugh is a scene stealer as she was in Black Widow. Her scenes with Hailee are delightful and I hope we see a next gen Black Widow and Hawkeye team up. The macaroni scene in episode 5 and the fight scene in episode 6 just show their chemistry and clearly there are parallels between them and Clint/Natasha. Tony Dalton is quite funny as Jack, who ended up being quite a likable character and a red herring. Vera Farmiga is good, although a bit wasted for someone of her talents and D'Onofrio is cool as always but I expect we will see more of him in Echo.
All in all, a really fun ride and one that stuck the landing for me. I think this probably ranks above Loki and TFATWS in terms of how much I liked the MCU Disney+ shows. I like all of them. but WandaVision is my favorite and most emotionally resonant. This was more consistent than Loki which had some great episodes and some kind of dull ones. TFATWS was solid but there were some things with the villains that didn't convince me fully with what they were going for. I also really liked that there was a new Christmas themed tv show to watch this season. I always enjoy watching Chrismas related shows around this time of year. Last year it was a Netflix rom com called Dash & Lily. This year its Hawkeye.
