Rachel Berry Analysis: Why is She the Way She Is?

I have a feeling you’re gonna say Will Schuester.

Well, sort of. But I think it goes deeper than that. She was egotistical and intense even before Glee Club.

Learning to work as a team is a very important life skill. It helps with friendships, school work, business work, really most areas of life. You don't have to like group projects, but you need to know how to collaborate. That's why when soccer wasn't working for me, I joined musical theatre.

Rachel never learned this.

When she discusses her childhood, she never mentions doing theater, wether it was a lead or ensemble. She did singing and dancing competitions. So she never learned how to work with people at a young age. And the fact that she doesn't have siblings didn't help.

(This isn't me saying that only children are brats. That is not true! It just is an unhelpful factor in Rachel's case, who is already isolated.)

We see she has pictures in her locker of her with her dads. And we can assume she loves performing with them, as we see her sing You're the Top with them in season 3. She also says they do this ever weekend. So they were her friends growing up. And they always called her a star. They isolated Rachel by not letting her learn social skills and putting her on a pedestal.

But the thing is, Rachel wants friends.

She says in Pilot that she joined Glee because everyone hates her. So she's constantly joining clubs so she can make friends. And she gets bullied the most among the New Directions, even after making friends. They keep things from her and push her away. In season 2 she finds out Finn slept with Santana from the group. So everyone knew but her. And that hurt, not only because her boyfriend lied, but because no one trusts her, not even the people she considers her friends.

Everyone has friend groups but her. There's the Original 4, the Cheerios, the jocks, and then there's Rachel. We never see her hang out with people in season, except for Jesse and Finn.

And that's the problem. When you don't know how to form friendships, you can't form relationships.

I think Hiram and Leroy are hilarious, but they're not very good parents. Rachel's insecurities, ego, socially awkward tendencies, and need for validation all come back to them. I'm not a parent, but that's just my two cents.

-The Berry family are famous for their appearances and participation in Broadway and the theater scene. Many Berrys presented as traditionalists but their views varied person by person depending on the family member. So, there has never been one solid viewpoint to connect them all to.

-The Berry triplets were born via surrogate, and were raised by two fathers, Hiram and LeRoy. They grew up praised and spoiled, but because Rebekah was never as serious or as passionate about her Broadway career as her siblings she was always seen as a little bit of the black sheep of the family. This was only worsened by the fact that she was the submissive.

-Fearful for her treatment in the real world, Hiram and LeRoy did their best to prepare Rebekah for what her life would be like as a submissive, often giving her less than what her siblings were given and being forced to make do with less. They never starved her for love or attention, but wanted her to be as prepared for her place as possible.

-Rebekah never had things easy. Unlike her siblings she was quiet and a bit shy. She didn't dislike her position as a submissive but she did hate how it gave others license to treat her. She spent a lot of time being fearful, knowing she had no real say in what would or wouldn't happen to her.

-She disagrees with the old ways and has been so pleased to see the success of the rebellion, much to her family's dislike. She is excited to have a voice and to have the chance to be seen as a person.

✎ BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Reginald Mykal Berry was born via surrogacy to Hiram and LeRoy Berry on December 18, 1991. Despite growing up as a member of the Berry family, Reginald always felt displaced. The first several years of his life were great, until Rachel came along. His sister, although he loved her, was domineering and bratty at best, and always demanded nearly every ounce of attention their fathers had to give. Due to his lack of interest in the dance and singing classes he was enrolled in, the stage was never where Reginald felt most at home. This quickly earned him a spot on the back-burner, leaving him to often fend for himself on nights his fathers were preoccupied with Rachel and her latest endeavor. This lead to Reginald acting out. He began cutting class, his grades dropped, and he began running with the wrong crowd. By 13 he was known for his petty criminal history, his aggressive and somewhat violent nature, and his complete and total disregard for authority figures.

It was this behavior that lead his fathers to finally lay down some semblance of a law- Reginald was required to bring up his grades and get involved in at least one extracurricular activity, or he’d find himself miserable. So, Reginald did as he was told, pulling his grades from the depths of the gutter (though, only up to a C-Average) and joining the baseball team. It was here that he finally managed to excel at something, and he fell in love with the sport. Still, no matter what he did, he couldn’t fully remove himself from the title of ‘black sheep’.

When Reg was 16 and a sophomore in high school (having been held back a year in middle school), Dorsey Corcoran moved into town. Though the redhead caught Reginald’s eye from day one, he couldn’t bring himself to let it show. Still, he couldn’t stop himself from watching. Observing. Wondering. His curiosity often got the better of him, and he found himself being late to classes, skipping meals, and hanging around in hallways and classrooms far longer than he needed, all to make sure Dorsey was alright. He got the sense the other wasn’t exactly the assertive type, and it was that inexplicable attraction that lead Reg to feel protective of the other. It wasn’t as if he wasn’t aware something was off- Dorsey’s quiet nature, his shyness, his sense of uncertainty and air of insecurity…The boy always seemed to be alone, if not with his older sister Marley. Reginald’s interest grew into a crush, and he found himself feeling off-balance and downright awkward any time he even considered speaking to Dorsey.

Things at home continued on, and at 16 Reginald took a part-time job at the local baseball diamond. He scrimped and saved every penny he could, and by 18 and the time he graduated high school, he was ready to move out on his own. He found himself a small, one-bedroom house in what wasn’t the most savory part of town, but one he knew his family wouldn’t deign to step foot in. Progressing to community college, Reg took classes part time, played on their small baseball team for a partial scholarship, and worked full time at the community center, continuing his job from high school as well as adding the title of coach. Reginald hadn’t been settled long, and everything seemed great…Until it wasn’t. One fateful day, during one of the most important practices of the season, Reg Berry tore his Rotator Cuff, incurring several surgeries and ending his baseball career forever. This tossed the marked Dominant (which came as no surprise to anyone) into a downward spiral, one he continued for the next year or so.

Although he’d practically given up hope of any semblance of a future (subsequently returning to overuse of alcohol and recreational use of drugs). Still, the one constant remained. Dorsey Corcoran. The Rose’s had never been known to have much of anything, still Reg couldn’t quell his shock when he managed to move into the house only two doors down from them at 18. Even after his injury, continuing to see Dorsey kept Reg semi-sane, despite the fact that the two still hadn’t had a conversation. Being neighbors afforded Reginald the opportunity to learn more than he had about the other during his observations in high school. He learned more about Dorsey’s family, their relationships, their struggles…And the reality of the situation. Reg began leaving small gifts for the other- $20 in the mailbox, to ensure Dorsey was able to eat for the week. New notebooks, pens, and other school supplies on their stoop for his birthday, and other times just because. Even then, the Dominant did what he could to provide for the other, even if he could only in the smallest of ways. Then, one fateful night, another of a seemingly endless string, Reg heard what he could only describe as a ruckus coming from the Rose house. At first, he thought nothing of it- it wasn’t until he heard what he was convinced were Dorsey’s screams that he took action. Grabbing the baseball bat he kept behind his door for protection, Reg barged over and into the house, arriving just in time to see Dorsey’s father (whom Reg had always written off as out of the picture- apparently with good reason) going after the boy, hammer in hand, standing over an unconscious Dorsey. Reg swung unthinkingly, catching the man by surprise and knocking him out cold with one hit.

Naturally, Reginald called 911, staying with Dorsey and his family until help arrived. Finally gathering the courage to introduce himself, Reginald Berry finally formally met Dorsey Rose during a visit to the hospital. The two became instantly bonded, inseparable- it was as if this was how things were always meant to happen. The pair quickly became an item, and they fed off of each other in the best of ways. Despite Dorsey’s struggle with mental illness (which Reginald both recognized in him and took onto his own shoulders- making sure he got the appropriate help, counseling, and medications) and despite Reginald’s hardass exterior and struggles with substance abuse and addiction, they managed to make it. Reg enrolled full-time in school, throwing himself into courses and bringing Dorsey with him upon the Submissive’s acceptance. From there the two traveled to a four-year university together where, two years in, Reginald took Dorsey Rose as his claim. Graduating with a 3.9GPA and with honors, Reg immediately began to delve into schooling for his Master’s degree, already having decided he wanted to further study the world they lived in, but never had paid much attention to beyond his own Dominance. He graduated his Master’s program at 25, and began exploring his career opportunities. Reg took a job at the community college they’d both graduated from while he awaited Dorsey’s completion of his degree. The two had settled nicely into their lives, and into their relationship and claim. Still, they talked about more. More adventure. More life. More experiences. Ergo, when Reginald learned of open positions at the famed Dalton Sanctuary, the pair up and moved, both accepting teaching positions and toasting to their new lives.

*NOTE: During his rebellious phase, Reginald ran with the Bowers Gang, and therefore knows and is connected to Victor Criss and Henry Bowers. However, once he moved out on his own, incurred his injury, witnessed what he did, and began shifting his focus towards cleaning up his life and his relationship with Dorsey, he drifted apart from the others. Though they keep in touch occasionally, Reginald is unaware that the pair have landed at the Sanctuary.

rachel was born in manhattan to two very loving fathers, leroy (a screenplay writer) and hiram (a costume designer). she bathed in the universe of film making, musicals and plays ever since she came to the world. she does not know about her mother and has no interest, as of now, to find out more about her. 

she was homeschooled all her life, until college. she attended nyada after being rejected from julliard due to her throwing a fit during her admission audition because the pianist played the wrong note.

growing up, rachel was very outspoken and easygoing with her parents and family friends. she was supportive of her dads’ careers even if it meant she had to be left alone when they worked on broadway or attended award shows.

she had a hard time making friends, at nyada. she could come off as reserved and naive, but once she opened her mouth, rachel blew everyone away like a tornado. she was a little diva and pretty much everyone hated her for that although, they had to admit it, she earned the right to have such an attitude. rachel was among the best students the academy has ever known.

she did not search for jobs or struggled as a graduate student. her boyfriend insured she was living the dream life. 

she played in funny girl and west side story as maria. 

she started dating rupert campion, broadway performer and director, when she starred on broadway in the revival of funny girl. they did have instant chemistry when they met and during rehearsals, which lead to them dating. she has nothing to complain when it comes to rupert as a partner, he is a decent boyfriend and he is really good at putting the spotlight on her. he will bring her to every big award shows, premieres or events, he will brag about her talent and her impressive career and he sees her as his muse. the thing is, she fell out of love with him since the relationship felt very superficial. she has yet to told him, because he cast her as the lead of his new play and every critic and broadway enthusiast predict it will be a massive hit. 

they have been dating for two or three years and still keep it “secret”. the medias know about them, they’re all smitten on red carpets, but they don’t post about it publicly or talk about it in interviews. 

she has met barbra streisand, who called her “very sweet” and she’s still walking on air.

she has this strange feeling that broadway is not the only thing she was meant to do. she developped such a strong love for singing that she is looking for a record label. 

she is pretty much like rachel from season four and five, a little adventurous, pushed to her limits by life and questioning her title as a broadway ingenue. 

she has appeared on the tonight show with jimmy fallon and she has made a guest appearance on saturday night live for a broadway special edition, with lin-manuel miranda as the host. 

she WILL win a tony award for the current play rupert is working on. but as of now, she has only received positive critics and flowers. we stan a very humble queen.

BIO:

Chandler believes that being adopted by Hiram and Leroy was his destiny. With how they’d push him and his siblings to be the best and to succeed, he was convinced that if they hadn’t been put up adoption they wouldn’t have been gifted the drive for success, like they had been. Chandler started his first drama class at four years old, and from then on, he was never not enrolled in a drama class. Acting was his passion, something he could, and would, talk about for hours on end. He’s starred in school productions and local community plays, and has plans to absolutely dominate Broadway, or London’s West End. There are no other alternatives Chandler is willing to entertain.

He’s explored a little when it comes to his kinks and limits, and what his potential mark might be. Like he was preparing for a role, Chandler had treated the scenes and hook-ups he’d had before arriving at the Institute as research for what was to come. The Institute was the stage where he would perform one of the most important roles of his life: Successfully Claimed Man.

Chandler has a selfish streak, which is why he left for an Institute first. He wants every mark to be available to him during his interview, and while he loves his siblings, he’ll let them take fewer options before he does that himself.

What are your feelings about the mark you have received?

I’m feeling positive. How is this not the mark everyone wants? I’ve got all the options, and the only downside is I get one less spare bedroom. I’m sure I can live like the working class until I claim.

How do your feelings on the system compare to your parents’ feelings on it?

My feelings are mostly the same as Dads’s feelings. The system is important, we should follow it as much as possible. But success is the most important thing you can have in your life. Luckily, success comes easy to me. I’m their Gold Star Boy.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I see my name in lights in Broadway and the West End. I see myself holding a glass of Château Picard wine, while I watch Andrew Lloyd Webber and Lin-Manuel Miranda have a slap fight in public over who’ll get me in their latest record-breaking production. I see SUCCESS, darling.

Describe what terrifies you the most.

Being unknown, and my talent going to waste in some small town. Just being…normal, and unremarkable. I can’t think of anything worse.

What: Rachel confronts her new and improved shadow self and, as always, literally runs away from her problems.

Warnings: None! Slight anti-New Age sentiment but nothing bad.

Rachel suddenly found herself in the lobby of Asterismos, Inc. It was quiet. She couldn’t even hear the sound of traffic outside. There wasn’t anyone sitting at the reception desk, no one walking around. All Rachel could hear were the tap-tap-tap of her heels on the marble flooring as she walked around. She tried to open the doors that led outside. She didn’t want to be here. There was something heavy, eerie about the atmosphere. But no matter how hard she pushed against the doors, no natter how many fireballs she sent towards them, they wouldn’t budge. Something was pulling her more in towards the building.

She had no idea how she got there. The last she remembered she was at NYADA. However, something was telling her to go forward, to go up to the penthouse of the building. Her grandparents’ office, where she’d first met them the day of the museum tour. She took the elevator up and called out to see if there was anyone. Still no answer. She noticed the door to Caroline’s office was closed, but there was light peeking out through the cracks. That meant someone was in there. Finally, another person who could help explain why Asterismos was so quiet.

Rachel pushed open the door and saw someone sitting in Caroline’s chair, though the back was facing her. Rachel let out a relieved sigh. “Bubbe, thank aether you’re here. Where is everyone? What’s going on here?” she asked.

The chair swivelled around, and Rachel gasped when she saw it wasn’t her grandmother. No. It was herself, dressed in an elaborate, expensive looking dress, a tiara made of stars placed atop her head. It was her, but again, not really her.

“You’re…” Rachel started.

“Your other self, yes,” the other Rachel said with a smirk. “Long time no see, sister. Things have changed quite a bit, haven’t they?” she added, gesturing to the room around her.

Rachel bit her lip. “I-I guess. I don’t understand. Why are you here?” she asked.

“I’ve always been here, Rach. I haven’t gone away. I’ve just changed because, well. You’ve changed,” the other Rachel said.

Rachel took a deep breath to steady her mind. “I-I haven’t changed that much. Sure it feels like it but… I’m not really that different.”

“That isn’t what you’ve been saying to all your friends, though, is it? Ever since the day at the museum, the day you came here for the first time, all you’ve been whining about is how you feel that everything’s changed because you found out this little secret. You know and I know the truth though, right Rach? You like the attention all this put on you. Everyone worrying about you, fawning over you,” the other girl told her.

Rachel shook her head. “No, no. That is not true. This has done nothing but complicate things. Finn barely talks to me. Things between my dads and I are… so tense. Tina got so angry with me at the duel… Nothing is as it should be.”

The other Rachel waved her hand and stood up to pace in front of the desk. “You’re the one who drove the wedge between you and them. It’s not just the situation. And anyways, what do you need the New Ages for? You have your real family now. Hiram and Leroy have done their part.”

Rachel’s eyes widened. “How could you say that? They raised me… us. They’ve done so much for us. You can’t just cast them aside like that. Same with Finn and Tina.”

“Isn’t that what you’ve been doing, though, Rachie? You started distancing yourself from them the minute you thought you were a Bloodline. You always talk a great deal about how you don’t want to be a Bloodline that thinks they’re better than everyone else, but you know it’s who you are. And you secretly love it,” she told her.

Rachel shook her head again. The other Rachel may look different, but she was still saying the same hateful things she was saying last year. Rachel didn’t want them to be true, but she had to admit that they were. At least on some level. She didn’t see herself as better than anyone (other than in singing, naturally), and she definitely could never be as dismissive of her dads as this other Rachel was being but… she could see herself getting there. Someday. Not that she wanted that.

“What? Cat got your tongue, Rachie? You know this is what you want,” the other Rachel said, gesturing to herself. “You want to be the Corcoran princess everyone fawns over, the princess of Bloodline society. You want everyone to adore you, you want everyone to do as you want them to, to do your bidding. It’s okay. It’s completely natural. You just have to admit it to yourself and let yourself get there. You’re already friends with Hunter and Sebastian and Blaine. Just follow their lead and you can be like me. Just forget about the Berrys and those other New Ages.��

Rachel glared. “No. The last thing I want to be is cruel like you, to be so dismissive of the people who I love and who love me. I could never be you,” she said, though her voice wavered slightly. She knew, if she wasn’t careful, that she could turn out like this Rachel in front of her. And it was appealing. Some of it. But she didn’t think she could ever set aside her friends and family. Her real family. “I’m leaving. I don’t have to listen to this,” she said, turning to go back to the elevator.

The other Rachel let out a low laugh. “That’s your prerogative. But nothing much has changed since we last saw each other, Rachel. And you can’t ever get rid of me, because despite all of this, you still aren’t strong enough to defeat me. If you were then I’d actually believe you when you say you don’t want to be like me. But until then, you’re just deluding yourself, princess.”

Rachel hesitated, debating fighting back for a second. Actually fighting back. Then she could be rid of her, this voice in her head telling her to be the type of Bloodline she spent years of her life loathing. But she knew she couldn’t. She’d lived with this voice for aether knows how long. Even if she didn’t want to become this Rachel, she still needed her, a fact that Rachel hated.

Instead, she just ignored her and made for the elevator before the other Rachel could say anything else. Luckily this time the previously locked doors yielded with no issue.

Rachel did what she’d been doing with this part of herself for the past year and a half: she shoved her shadow self back in her room and pretended she wasn’t there. Hopefully that would be enough to hold her off forever.

Biography.

Rachel Berry almost had the picture perfect family. She was raised by two supportive and loving parents who adopted her before she could say her first words. She grew up in a comforting environment when she was encouraged to take all the risks her heart desired without dealing with the fear of failure. Although she had a hard time creating friendships during her childhood, Rachel remained outgoing and did everything in her power to gain other people’s attention. In Elementary school, she would get all the silly awards and certificates for her perseverance, dedication, participation and, at last but certainly not least, excellence.

This need to reach for the starts followed her through her High School years. She would be a part of all kinds of clubs, from a singing club to the debate one. She would be successful in all of them and, actually, enjoy her time there. It was at the singing club that she figured out how talented she was at artistic things like a true kid brought to Broadway every weekend would be. Her fathers, Hiram and Leroy, pushed her to pursue this career, but she seemed too unsure to choose. She had plenty of time to choose, to make a life of her own… Until she walked down the hallways of her school with the graduation outfit. She did not apply to any colleges, not even to Julliard where her fathers could easily make her enter with their connections. Rachel was facing a dramatic situation she would not take long to resolve.

Strong minded, Rachel Berry listened to her heart and decided to study at a beauty school. She remembered loving makeup and hairstyles more than plays alone when she went to Broadway with her parents. She remembered waiting for the show to be over and asking if she could have a tour of the backstage area, curious to know what products or techniques they were using either to make someone look natural or taken out of a fairy tale. As soon as she started studying at this beauty school, she knew she was making the right choice.

Her parents, though, disagreed on that statement. They believed that Rachel belong in the arts, singing, dancing, performing at least. She could not be mad at them, she was skilled at all the above. Once she got a degree from her school and could call herself a true beautician, she promised Leroy and Hiram to make them proud. So, she started asking around for bars, theaters and cabarets if they needed an entertainer, someone who could reach a high note on command and give the clients a conversation topic to talk about all night long. One thing led to another and Rachel Berry became a cabaret singer.

Her life quickly fell into a routine that could no longer stimulate her. Rachel would wake up by noon, do a bit of training, warm her voice up and then head to the same cabarets that hired her. Sometimes she would sing for a celebration, whether it was a family gathering, a birthday or an unconventional wedding, but on most times, she would sing to a deaf crowd who did not care one bit about the background noise. The issue was not her salary, she was paid quite a lot, but it was the boredom and the void it created deep in her soul. She surely loved singing, but she could not imagine turning this hobby into a full-time career just yet. Sitting on a bench, in front of a retro microphone and singing absentmindedly were not a part of her vision board for her future.

Again, her parents supported her. They went hunting for buildings in which she could start her own little business, but everything was too much: too expensive, too far, too busy or too quiet. Rachel decided to keep searching on her own, widening her options as much as possible. She made a few phone calls, sent emails, met with real estate agents, still, things were not moving as fast as she wanted them too. However, she was not ready to drop the towel just yet. She received a call from a friend she met at a bar one night. He was a bartender, looking for a slower pace and a calmer city. He informed her about a place she could rent. It was affordable, it was lovely, it was everything she wanted.

The problem was that this place she was about to get was in Pennsylvania. Not geographically far, one could say, but spiritually, it seemed to be on the other side of the spectrum compared to New York City. It only took a dinner with her fathers to encourage her and leap into the great unknown. The next thing she knew, Rachel was on a train, waving her hometown good bye and already imagining how great it would be to finally be in control of her future.

She waited three months to settle in Philadelphia, decorate her new work place and hire other employees. She did study at one of the greatest Beauty schools around, but she did not feel confident enough to manage a business while taking care of several clients at the same time. Most people turned her offer down, too risqué they would say, but a few stuck around. By the time the Cabaret Clinic opened, Rachel was joined by a makeup artist, a hairstylist and another beautician just like her. They were risk-takers and willing to make of this place a must-see in the beauty sphere of the historical city.

CHARACTER NAME: Rachel Barbra Berry

BIO: When Hiram Berry and Leroy Washington decided to have a child, they knew that they had one or two options; surrogacy or adoption. Given the stigma that came from a gay couple, compounded even further that they were an interracial couple, they knew that surrogacy would be their best option. The men went on the search for the right agency that was kind, compassionate and most of all understanding of their desire to become parents. It took a few months for the agency to find the perfect candidate based on the qualifications the men wanted, with beauty and IQ being their most desired, but they finally found the right woman to carry their baby in Shelby Corcoran.

After this, things seemed to flow much easier and before they knew it, Shelby was calling them with the news of a positive pregnancy test. The men were overjoyed and realized that in nine months time, their son or daughter would be on this Earth. For eight months, the men prepared for the birth of the child, a child they later learned would be a girl. It was a raining and drizzling day when Shelby informed them that her water had broken and it was time. The men rushed off to the hospital and 14 hours later, Rachel Barbra Berry was born.

Growing up, Rachel showed her talents to her fathers quite early on in her short life. When she was months old, they entered her into a competition and she won the trophy. From then on out, the foundation of everything Rachel Berry was established. They made sure to sign her up for any type of classes to give the girl an advantage and the very best for their daughter as she deserved it. Singing, dancing, acting classes all featured a Rachel Berry in their sign up lists. And Rachel was a star. She picked up the routines quicker than most, she sang with more technique than others and she adored throwing herself into another character to put on a show for others. Rachel felt like she had found something in her life that made her happy, smile and content. It was during a movie marathon with her fathers that she fell in love with Barbra Streisand. They were watching Funny Girl and from the moment Barbra opened her mouth, Rachel couldn’t take her eyes off the screen. From then on out, Rachel wanted to mimic, but obviously, be her favorite.

Due to Rachel’s passions, as she grew older and were around other kids; her social development was hampered. Not for a lack of trying because Rachel liked to talk. She could talk about herself, singing, Broadway and Barbra for hours on end. But that was the problem. She didn’t share interests with a lot of kids who were into action films, comics, reality TV and so much more. It didn’t mean that Rachel was completely friendless, she wasn’t, but it was isolating and demoralizing that people didn’t get to know her before judging her. As she grew older, Rachel realized that it was their loss and not hers as it could be lonely when one reached the top.

Getting to high school, Rachel was hopeful that everyone left their childish antics of bullying and being less than stellar humans to others but it was like McKinley was a step up from the treatment she had gotten in middle school. Now, people believed that throwing slushies at her was a sport within itself. Yet, this did not stop or detour Rachel. She was still the most talented singer in McKinley (as far as she was concerned). She still was a straight A student. She was still heading to New York to be a star. And nothing and no one was getting in the way to stop her.

A NECESSARY INTRODUCTION

This is Rachel Berry. She is 21 years old, currently a Senior at McKinley and her concentration is Musical Theatre . She is bisexual, and it is said she looks like Lea Michele. Lucky for you she is taken.

WHO WILL I BE? ITS UP TO ME

Rachel Berry claims to have the most supportive parents ever. While that is a stretch, there is no real way to test that theory, so no one tries to argue it. But Hiram and LeRoy did try their best to give Rachel everything she could want. Dance classes, voice classes, acting classes, Rachel had been trained in everything she could want from a young age, and she’s grateful for it.

While Rachel cares deeply for those she is close to, she’s never really had any true friends growing up. Her intense and sometimes selfish personality can be off putting to most. As she grew up, Rachel learned to embrace being on her own, and look forward to the days everyone would want to be her friend. She was born to be a star, and she knows it’ll happen one day.

Rachel has been apart of glee club since her freshman year, and now a Senior, she’s thrilled to see how far McKinley has come. A school for the arts, with an award winning glee club, it’s become everything she could’ve wanted. What she wants next, is to take home another National’s trophy before moving to New York and finally becoming the Broadway Star she is destined to be.

Rachel Berry is a people pleaser by nature; she will do anything that she can for the ones that she cares for. She has an open heart and wants to be accepted. In the past three years that she has attended McKinley, she can say that she has a handful of friends - not by her choice, might I add. Although she can be very self-centered, she just wants what every human wants - to be accepted, respected, and loved. Her senior year is going to focused on her Broadway future, but she is determined put herself out there and make the memories that she has missed out in her college experience.

Although her everlasting crush on Finn Hudson has yet to go away, Rachel met someone the summer before Junior year of college. They met at a karaoke bar a few towns over and hit it off immediately and the brunette fell quickly. Quite literally when Brandon pushed her after they got into an argument on their third date. He wanted to take their relationship to the next level and Rachel wasn’t ready. The next day he apologized and whispered sweet nothings in her ear and she forgives him. And she continues to forgive him every time this happens - which is more often than even the girl would admit. Brandon doesn’t want to put a title on whatever they are doing so Rachel keeps whatever it is that they have to herself.  Not like anybody would believe her anyways and he says that he loves her and Rachel Berry just wants to be loved.

Finn Hudson (+): Rachel’s crush on Finn is years old, and she thought once they became glee club co-captains, it would just bring them closer together. That’s not exactly the case. Finn likes Rachel, and is really attracted to her, but she can get a little crazy when it comes to the New Directions and that totally scares him. Rachel figures he just needs a push, and knows once he embraces the feelings he has for her, they’d be an unstoppable team.

Kurt Hummel (+/-): Once intense competitors, Rachel and Kurt are now best friends. That doesn’t mean they don’t have sing off’s at their weekly sleepovers, but it’s more due to fun and bragging rights this time around. Kurt still wishes he could get more solos in glee club, and the two still fight like cats and dogs about who is more talented, but they deeply care for one another.

Mercedes Jones (-): Mercedes and Rachel had the ability to be friends. With similar interests, goals, and ambitions, you’d think they’d get along find. But both diva’s at heart, they couldn’t handle the other one overshadowing them, no matter how much they respected each other. And after another passive aggressive, belittling comment from Rachel Berry during another one of their fights, Mercedes stormed out of the New Directions choir room and never looked back

Tina Cohen Chang (+/-): As the only two girls in the New Directions, there is constant fighting for the female solos. Rachel believes as the captain and the more experience performer she should get more, but Tina knows she’s just as talented as Rachel is. She just wishes she could prove it to everyone.

CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY: 

Having been abandoned by her mother at the age of 1, Rachel Berry grew up in the loving home of Hiram and Leroy, well for the next 10 years of her life that is. That’s when the fighting started, everything coming crashing down around her as if nothing mattered. Her idyllic life disappeared, leaving behind a broken home, a scarred and scared little girl who had to learn to fend for herself. She fell into the background of the family, one father leaving the state and the other engrossing himself in his work too much. Rachel was left alone, feeding herself and walking herself to school every day as if it was the new norm. As if the way she was cast away was normal for every student. She started to close off, no longer being her happy peppy self, an anger boiling in her stomach that she couldn’t quite fight off.

At the age of 14 she enrolled in an MMA course, forging Hiram’s signature to allow herself in, it was her last fighting chance to beat the fire raging in her body. She knew where he kept the money for emergencies in the house, so she simply took what she needed each month and snuck around with it. When questioned about the missing money, she caved and explained that she wanted to take MMA classes, but she didn’t think he would allow her to, so she stole the money to pay for it herself. She didn’t explain that it was to fight her anger, to fight the pain she felt since she hadn’t had any contact with Leroy in years. She felt abandoned, she felt like he didn’t care anymore, much like how she processed Shelby not wanting anything to do with her when her father had told her what happened and why she was adopted.

At the age of 15 Rachel found herself questioning her sexuality, ending up dating a senior in high school, despite Hiram telling her he didn’t approve. It ended up being a relationship she regretted more than anything, staying with him for six months of physical and mental abuse. The failed relationship pushed that fire to grow, now an inferno in her heart and stomach. Her MMA turned into an underground fight ring, along with fights at school. Refusing to take anything less than the best from everyone, she fought to get high up on the food chain, in her respective area of course. She wasn’t conventionally attractive enough, nor in the right circles to be popular, so she settled for intimidation and cunning to get her what she needed.

She made connections in several clubs to get her what she needed when she needed things, and began to feel comfortable for the first time in a while. Now 17, Rachel Berry was an outsider and she was proud of it. She didn’t care about being in the ‘in crowd’ although there were some cuties in there. After her first relationship she didn’t bother dating again, but looking around, she could tell the only people she found attractive anymore were girls, but never getting to know anyone enough to develop a crush. She liked to keep her options open, if she didn’t make romantic connections then she wouldn’t create enemies. No one liked enemies.
