I AM SUPER EXCITED and also a little confused....
Tumblr media
Let’s talk about the happy first because this is a rainbows and sunshine zone.
Tumblr media
This slice of entertainment news is EVERYWHERE. TVline, Hollywood Reporter, IGN, TVGuide, etc. That’s very good news. It’s not a 100% guarantee the CW will pick up the spin off, but we’re a lot further down the road than I anticipated at this point.
The fact they are using one of Arrow’s last episodes for a backdoor pilot, even though I think we technically had one in 7x16 already, also says to me this is very close to being a go at the CW. And yes, my girl Katherine McNamara is one of the headliners. Ben Lewis (William) and Joseph David Jones (Connor) aren’t part of the “official” announcement, but there’s no doubt in my mind they will be part of the show.
Marc, Beth, Katherine and Juliana were all tweeting about it too, which means they can finally talk about it publicly. Oddly not a peep from KC.
Tumblr media
BUT I’m a little confused about the canary aspect. We don’t have enough canaries with Zoe? I truly was not expecting K*tie C*ssidy or Juliana Harkavy to be part of the spin off at all, but eh whatever.
Tumblr media
Why am I whatever? Well, I don’t have a deep hatred of the canaries like some folks do (which is totally understandable and absolutely in their right to dislike those characters). This is a big year for my relationship with KC. If Season 8 keeps the same “L*urel” we met in Season 7 then I think I’ll be good with her character. I’m neither here nor there on Dinah. If she’s not bad mouthing Felicity every two seconds and maybe develops more of a personality then hopefully my apathy will grow to caring. We’ll see.
For some reason, in order to have a Green Arrow show the executive producers feel there needs to be a Bl*ck C*nary element. Do I feel that is necessary? Absolutely not. I would much prefer they focus only on OTA: The Next Generation. I think we have canaries covered with Zoe.
Tumblr media
However, their approach to marketing the spin off isn’t any different than their marketing for Arrow. Mia, William and Connor appeal to the Olicity fan base and Laurel, Dinah and Zoe appeal to the LL/BC/comic canon fan base. As Olicity fans, we just want the show to be about OTA and Olicity. Comic canon purists want it focused on BC/GA. The EPs refuse to pick sides. They keep all the characters instead which leaves both sides equally happy and unhappy. Nobody gets what they want.
Tumblr media
But when you look at the landscape of Arrow, which characters get the most focus? Which characters are the most popular? OTA and Olicity. I have a feeling it will be much of the same with Mia, William and Connor (plus JJ if I get my love triangle). They might be using the canaries to market the show to appeal to the comic purists, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll get a major focus.
We’ve seen them do this time and again with Arrow. They promote KC/JH as one of the “stars” and “series regular” but her actual footprint on the show is much less than the promotion made it seem. Keep in mind, series regular isn’t guaranteed 23 episodes. It just means the actor has to prioritize the show over any other projects.
Then again I could be wrong and it’ll be a canary palooza. That doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll hate it. I’m not speaking for anyone else. Just me. This doesn’t deter me from watching the spin off if it gets picked up, but I’m not guaranteeing I’ll love it either. I’m going to watch the back door pilot. I’m keeping an open mind at this point. I’ll make the decision to turn the channel or not on another day.
Keep in mind they are in the development phase too. So get loud about what you love and quiet about what you hate. Networks don’t discriminate regarding positive and negative reactions. It’s all buzz to them.

So what do you think about Black siren? Is she gonna be a big part of this season? Why so much focus on her is comic con? (the only thing it makes kind irk about it, its to make Laurel relevant before she died they push Felicity out of the bunk to make that happen, What are the changes they will push Black canarie, Mr terrifect, even Diggle to the side lines to make Back Siren relevant?) Soooo not here to watch they try to redeem her
Well, let’s see, I LOATH Katie Cassidy. Like LOATH. She has about as much talent as a dead cockroach. I don’t want to watch her plastic face on my tv, so I’ll be avoiding episodes that figure her and Dinah (whom I also cannot stand). Wild Douche and Mr.T are not on my MUST WATCH list either. I am only tuning in fro Oliver, Felicity, Diggle and Thea. The big bad and Cayden James will be really interesting, too, but all the rest can fucking choke. My biggest piece of advice: talk about what you love. Give OTA and Olicity the buzz. Don’t talk about the rest. The network will notice, trust me.
The comic con focus on BC/BS was an epic flop. No one wanted to talk to them or about them. Guess who they DID want to talk about? lol
SO those are my late Sunday thoughts on the epic failure that is Black Siren (a MAID in the comics, by the way) and Black Canary (who should have been allowed to stay dead).

Honestly, it's making me feel the same way :( would explain why she was so quiet throughout the bullying Katie faced, and why she is suddenly trying so hard to make Juliana a thing, since her dad is an producer (who probably helped her land the job at arrow).
Anyway Willa Holland’s mother has been calling out olicity fans on Twitter because they were insulting Katie for no reason, and she called Katie a “wonderful actress”. She then went on to state how she’s well aware that the fandom “attack anyone who doesn’t share their views”.
She was accused of body shaming when she wasn’t, because she used the word “stocky” which is used often to mean strong/muscle bound, and as a ballet dancer it’s used a lot in her work. But oliciters were just applying negative connotations to the word because they had nothing else to use against her.
She said that “delighted doesnt begin to describe” how she feels about Willa’s decision to leave the show. She heavily implied that there was behind the scenes drama that may have prompted her exit. When one of the oliciters tried to slander Willa for unfollowing both Stephen AND Emily on Instagram, Willa’s mother stated that it wasn’t her place to say what happened but it was far from what any oliciter was trying to imply. She then even sarcastically told an oliciter to “ask your good friends Stephen and Emily since they seem to practically be family.” And even somewhat mocked a fan who was trying to form and twist a narrative by pointing out that the fan in question doesn’t know the people involved at all, and has no real concept of how these people behave in their day to day lives.
(This is actually a viewpoint I’ve always held tbh. Celebrities are actually characters in their own way, I guess? I mean, you have the human being. The person they are behind close doors and the mannerisms and beliefs they don’t share with the public. Then theres the public persona that they broadcast, which is how they present themselves, and is a version of them that is edited to some degree in order to market themselves. And then you have the role they play. So for these people to argue that they know Stephen and Emily better than Willa’s mother is hilarious. They only know the public personas of both Stephen and Emily, whilst Willa’s mother has first hand accounts from her daughter who knows them both personally.)
When asked to elaborate she said that it wasn’t her place, but if she were to do so then it would “shatter [oliciters] narrative” completely.
She was then accused of not knowing “these people” at all. As if her own daughter hasn’t been working on this show for nearly 7 years with these people, starting when she was a teenager. But clearly random fans on Twitter would have more superior knowledge! Yikes.
Oliciters then slandered Katie by claiming she had “family members to help her get her foot in the door” and doesn’t have to rely on talent.
Willa’s mum defended Katie again and said “Having family in the industry doesn’t help you get work unless they are producers. End of story.” And then elaborated with “My youngest daughter’s father is a very famous film director, and he never lifted a finger to help his daughter or his step-daughter [Willa].”
So clearly, Katie’s dad being an actor-singer (who was a deadbeat and wasn’t around for most of her life and wrote her out of his will when she was only 17), is clearly not someone who had a hand in Katie’s career either.
Anyway, the fact LITERALLY EVERYONE knows this fandom is toxic af and they STILL try to play the victim is hilarious.

Actually let's talk about the racism both Juliana and the character of Dinah Drake faced at the hands of the show and the fandom.
1. Is hated simply for holding the name Dinah and the mantle Black Canary. And don't tell me that it's because they botched the history of the Canary legacy. Because, sorry to say, the mantle is so fucking convoluted anyways. Did you know that Dinah Drake and Dinah Lance used to both be the same person? Or that the Canary Cry was originally a wizard's curse? So yeah, it's not about story inaccuracy. And it ain't about the hair colour either, cause both Laurel AND Dinah Drake from the comics had naturally dark hair.
2. The marketing of Green Arrow and the Canaries whitewashed Dinah and gave her blonde hair, and so does multiple fanarts of both Arrow!Dinah and DinahSiren.
Tumblr media
From Guggie himself.
Come to think of it, they botched Mia's design too. Where's the curls? The hood and mask? Even the suit looks drastically different.
As for DinahSiren, I dare you to look up fanart and try to find a single one within the first twenty that has Dinah with skin darker than Laurel.
Also, ngl, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the reason Dinah was never considered as a love interest for Oliver, despite being one of the most prominent of them in the comics (yes, Ollie dated Dinah Drake too).
Just thought I'd bring this up since I've never seen it discussed and I've just seen so much unjustified hate towards Dinah and Juliana from Laurel Lance/Katie Cassidy fans and Olicity fans alike.

Arrow’s treatment of Dinah Drake
I am really bothered how Arrow treats the third Black Canary. (Well they treated the second one like shit too, but this is another topic.) They treat all the characters wearing the title Black Canary really bad.
Black Canary should be a major character, enough with this OTA, who became boring and hypocritical cowards.
Juliana Harkavy is an amazing actress and so sweet human being, she trains so hard and is so athletic, and her character has such a big potential to be more leading one and to bring Black Canary to greatness and equal level next to Green Arrow. But the writers just doesn’t allow it. She is just there for the fight scenes and that’s it. She was barely in the crossover episodes, she is barely promoted. She was not introduced to the other heroes as the new Black Canary. She didn’t even met White Canary - the woman whose legacy she is following. She is treated like a minor secondary character no matter that they gave her the title Black Canary. She barely interacts with Green Arrow and now (spoilers)........................... they will make her at odds with him.
I really love her character and she alone would make me watch Arrow again, but the bad writing and the focus on OTA turning them into Mary Sues just destroys it for me, it is one and the same interactions and one and the same conversations between those three characters which does not allow the show to progress, move on, and the characters to develop.

Okay but think about this. They killed Dinah Lance. And y'all thought she's gone for good.
But then we got Black Siren. And from that moment we should have known better. We should have known she wasn't done.
Y'ALL THOUGHT LAUREL WAS DEAD AND GONE FOREVER BUT SHE WAS SO GOOD THEY BROUGHT HER BACK TO STAY AND YALL ARE JUST STEWING NOW HAHAHAHAHA
Tuna Fake is awful goodbye

Okay, while this sucks on one hand because even after 8 years, I’m still not tired of Katie Cassidy’s stellar performance as Laurel Laurel, this also means hopefully Katie & others can get as far away from Marc Guggenheim as possible. While I love Katie Cassidy as Dinah Laurel Lance and can commend the others involved in the project, I don’t know if it would’ve been worth it as a viewer for the show runners and writers to mistreat her and her character any longer.

I don't care about the Black Canary. She is a pointless character on Arrow. Always has been, always will be. Three times is not the charm.

I don't understand the concept, that an action role don't require a physical actor/ actress, because they can use a stunt double all the time, which has been made by some Arrow fans.
It sounds totally unprofessional to me to hire two people for one role for a part that half of the scenes are fight scenes and it sounds totally unfair to the actors/ actresses who train and practice martial arts and are physical actors and prepare themselves for the role so they can make it more believable and realistic.
So an actress like Caity Lotz who was a dancer and performed a lot in front an audience, then decided to learn martial arts and is such a natural athlete and also very charismatic since she is a performer from kid deserves big action roles and super heroes. And the idea that an actress, who is good in other fields, but not in this one, has to be more suitable than her is totally disrespectful in my opinion.
And the fact that Juliana Harkavy, who now took the role of Black Canary, also learns her fight scenes and it looks like she is doing some of them herself speaks a lot.
In this regard the Arrow producers hired Stephen Amell to be the Arrow because of his physicality and willingness to make his own stunts, so to claim that the role of the female hero fighter has to be given to an actress that can’t throw a punch is offensive to the female viewers who want a strong representation of women on tv also.

The casting director who knew that audition Candice had with Grant was something special, something magical, also tried to argue with the fandom back in the day that DP can be considered the leading lady too. That anon was right. The industry tries to make black women share their titles, but never the other way around. You know he's done a live video with Grant and DP (who didn't audition btw), during this pandemic about casting and auditions etc, but not with Candice? The nerve!
Yeah, and that’s why I said it’s the network’s fault, because not only did they subtly encourage their constituents to hold Danielle out as a leading lady on par with Candice, but also the CW gave every promotional opportunity that Candice received to Danielle as well. Look no further than how the CW structured Teen Choice Awards noms. Katie Cassidy (who was originally Arrow’s leading lady) and Juliana Harkavy were never nominated for Choice Action Actress alongside Emily Bett Rickards. But Danielle has been nominated alongside Candice every year. It’s anti-black racism, plain and simple.
