this is just one prime example why jane never should have ended up with rafael.

Jane The Virgin was a show I absolutely loved once and now has zero rewatch-ability value, entirely because of its last season. Like, which part should I be excited about exactly?
- the incredibly downer subplot about Jane's mother getting breast cancer?
- watching the smart and capable Hermione get stuck with a teenage boy in the body of a grown adult she has to parent nearly as much as her actual child and the show telling me that's her happy ending bc he's hot and they have great sex?
("But they always planned it that way!" a) I don't care. b) plans change and c) if they wanted me to root for them, they should have done some work on his character instead of taking away any of his development for the sake of cheap drama)
- watching the guy she should have ended up with be another worse character, just to get his memories back in time to get his heart broken and end up in an insulting consolation prize ending by knocking up a woman who should have definitely been a lesbian
- watching the first lesbian the show introduced and the only addict rep be constantly mistreated by the narrative and be the only character without a partner at the end? (Not that you need a relationship to be happy, but she was THE ONLY ONE) She didn't even get a scene bonding with the other queer women
Like wow, much good, so excite

look i know it's been years but the thing that really pisses me off abt the jane the virgin ending is that, like..... I get it. I get what you were trying to do. you had the main character trying to decide between the safe but boring thing (teaching/michael) and the exciting but risky thing (writing/rafael) yes narratively it makes sense i get it. Did you also need to make him treat her like shit tho? like what was the narrative purpose of your leading man being straight up garbage i don't understand

Okay so my revised answer to this post, is that I would much rather have a benvi endgame. If they don’t end up together I am going to be SO MAD! Like I have never loved a fictional couple as much as I do them.
ME TOOO!!! They are my favorite fictional couple of all time and after watching s3, the show is really building them to end up together WHILE Devi continues on her self-love journey (which I absolutely adore) and since now I'm like 99% sure there's a benvi endgame, I would be distraught if we didn't get one, whereas I lived through a jafael endgame (BLETCH) and just didn't watch the show. Also, Kay I am calling it rn that they are going to release the show in June (earlier end of summer) because I realized other shows like You have release dates ready for March.

3 ships: Kanthony (Bridgerton); totally was not expecting these two to eat my brain when I watched season 2 last spring but hot damn did they.  What can I say, enemies-to-lovers is my favorite trope. Karedevil (Daredevil) I will always love these two despite what happens going forward.  Let’s just say I have not been the biggest fan of Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the MCU based on what we’ve seen so far.  Also #savekarenpage, Jafael (Jane the Virgin) Had to give spot 3 to these cuties, it was between them and Mel/Jack from Virgin River (do they even have an official ship name?? They need one!) But ultimately have to give it to these two chaotic idiots
Last Song: The one I’ve had on repeat the most lately is “Fallen Snow” by First Aid Kit.  Honorable mention though to the entire Midnights album, which I continue to listen to constantly (I regularly wake up with either “Anti-Hero” or “Snow on the Beach” in my head)
Last Movie: I think it was The Good Nurse, which I really enjoyed.  Unbelievably weird true story (It’s on Netflix)
Currently Watching: I actually just finished George & Tammy, which  really enjoyed.  I’m not really a country music fan, but my paternal grandma absolutely adored George Jones, so I am very familiar with his music and I love both Jessica Chastain and Michael Shannon (both were incredible in it imo).  Up next is probably Physical (on Apple) which has been on my “to watch” list forever and I keep thinking I should go ahead and start my Sopranos re-watch
Currently consuming: an Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso (my go-to Starbucks order) and munching on Annie’s (brand) fruit snacks
Currently craving: I am always craving dark chocolate in any form (on its own, truffles, peanut butter cups, covering fruit, I don’t care, just give me all the dark chocolate)

I remember and I'm still pissed too.
remember when jennie urman was so pissed that her whole cast was vocally team michael and so insecure with the endgame she had in mind that she had to bring michael back from the dead only to stomp her feet all over villadero? ‘cause i do. and i’m still mad.

super random comparison, but recently i’ve been getting into the show jane the virgin, and the way that fandom talks about jane is exactly the same way the gossip girl fandom talks about dan and vanessa, and it’s lowkey making me crazy. like every other jtv post is “unpopular opinion, but does anyone else HATE jane villanueva? she’s such a judgmental hypocrite!!! yes the other characters commit actual crimes regularly and constantly treat other people like shit, but aT lEaSt ThEy OwN iT!!!1!!” like idk but the double standard here drives me insane - god forbid a “good” character has any actual flaws, ESPECIALLY if the flaw is judging people’s problematic faves lmao. idk i know like dan/vanessa and jane are obviously pretty different (save the whole writer thing), but the discourse about them is so similar i feel like if i just deleted the names in the posts about them no one would be able to tell the difference lol
Me? Getting involved in JTV discourse in 2022? It’s more likely than you think!
No, you’re so right anon! Actually, I think there are a lot of similarities between Dan and Jane especially. Like their judgmental nature and their outsider status to the wealthy worlds they have to enter and their grounded worlds with their families…and then yes of course they’re both the Writer and they see their lives as Narratives (although Jane and Blair share some traits with that too).
And then there’s not as much between Jane and Vanessa, but they’re both poor WOC which automatically puts them in a precarious position in fandom where they must be perfect otherwise they’re going to get absurd amounts of hate.
Also going back to Jane and Blair actually, I think part of it is that they were both in self insert ships with the Billionaire Dream Boyfriend the showrunner was in love with and the fandom woobified so anytime Jane didn’t coodle Rafael it became “Jane’s not good enough for Rafael anymore, she doesn’t deserve him, she’s treating him like garbage” while Rafael could rarely do wrong.

thinking about how j*nnie snyder-urman literally killed her own show by bringing back michael and absolutely ruining his character and his and jane’s love story, all the while detonating j*fael by making r*fael be the most toxic tv boyfriend since ch*ck b*ss and d*mon s*lvatore and expecting us to still believe he was jane’s first choice the whole time, even when he was actively gaslighting and manipulating her the entire last season. now whenever most people talk about jtv it’s almost always negatively. it’s had no lasting impact. no one ever says: ‘hey, you know what show you should watch??’ about jtv.
and obviously, jtv’s short lifespan in the cultural zeitgeist is not all because of the last series and how bad it was. but man. some choices were MADE huh.

I loved michael and jane!! Jane truly would never have chosen rafael if he hadnt ‘died’ plus I didn’t like that the show brought him back as a way to show jane choosing rafael over him
I totally agree omg like I truly think the writers just...couldn’t make up their minds because while they claim it was always going to be rafael...if that’s true then they did a really shitty job??? jane chose michael, told him it was always him, they were married, he was like a father to her son, and then he died which was sad but at least the ending was respectful towards him?? like even rafael would toast to his memory. but then I think the writers were like oh, shit, she’s only with rafael cause michael died, so we gotta fix that! and then they brought him back and teased the cordueva shippers and then used him as a prop for jafael which is just...super disrespectful and it felt like they were spitting in our faces lol jennie snyder urman or whatever her name is is a war criminal

jane and rafael were planned from the beginning and the signs of them being endgame were always there tbh it wasn't a random decision from the writers or jennie falling in love with the idea.. it's the romcom/telenovela format
I never said it wasn't planned from the beginning, I think I was more getting at there was a certain point in the series (for a year plus) that the JTV cast and all the fans were team Michael over Rafael, and I remember during this time there were not many positive interactions between Rafael and Jane that convinced anyone that Rafael and Jane were endgame. They literally had to KILL Michael off for Rafael to become a viable option again. Part of writing a show is being able to adapt to how character dynamics and romantic chemistry may be better in an unintended pair and fully realizing the potential (unlike How I Met Your Mother) Just because a romance is planned from the beginning, it doesn't mean that it should be fully realized. Jane and Rafael were planned from the beginning sure, but NOTHING about them to me made sense together or compelled me in any way. The only thing I can think of is the manner in which they met is a great story. However, with Ben and Devi I feel it is VERY obvious through seasons 1, 2, and 3 that they have the strongest romantic connection of any couple on the show and the story is driving them to be together.

I don't understand how anyone can root for a pairing that only happened because another person suffered. Michael was kidnapped, tortured, mentally abused and robbed of his life!! And that's the only reason why Jane and Rafael got together. Some of you are sick y'all
