spooky tuesday is a (now not so new!) podcast where we’re breaking down all of our favorite slashers, thrillers, monster movies and black comedies on the new scariest day of the week.
ever wonder what would happen if scream’s stu macher had a chance to grow up, go to college, and even set his sights on grad school? the curve (1998) — also known as dead man’s curve — is just the film to answer that question to predictably disastrous results. though you might not have heard of it, this movie is more than worth the watch, and it’s a film close to all of our hearts. on a new episode of spooky tuesday, we’re celebrating our boy matty lilly’s birthday by unearthing an underappreciated classic from one of horror’s favorite stars.
give spooky tuesday a listen on apple podcasts, spotify, iheart radio, or stitcher

Santa Clara City Council Member Anthony Becker faces charges of perjury and “violation of duty.” When asked in April about the charges, District Attorney Jeff Rosen told the media that when the criminal grand jury transcript was released, the public would have a better idea of why the office pursued the charges. Hiya~! You're always in the back of my mind as a kind and knowledgeable source for Daredevil. ♥
Do you know if it has ever been revealed exactly what chemical blinded Matt? Or even where it was coming from/going in the middle of the city? My knowledge of comic books exploiting all potential plots makes me feel like this is a thread that would have been pulled at some point over the last 60 years, but I don't see anything.
Aah, thank you! That's a great question, and the answer is that a lot of these details have actually been kept vague. There have been a lot of retellings of Matt's origin, but they haven't explored the actual context/nuances of the accident that much and the details they have included have tended to be inconsistent. The thing that blinded Matt was a radioactive substance of some kind, but visual depictions have varied wildly, from a glowing "radioactive cylinder" to leaky barrels of toxic sludge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Matt's accident depicted by Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, and Glynis Wein (left); and by Chris Samnee and Javier Rodriguez (right).
As I mentioned, the details of the accident itself also vary. In Daredevil #1, we learn that the substance that blinded Matt was being transported by Ajax Atomic Labs, and that the accident was caused by the truck's brakes malfunctioning:
Tumblr media
Daredevil vol. 1 #1 by Stan Lee, Bill Everett, and Sam Rosen
In Daredevil #164's origin rehashing, Roger McKenzie tells us that it was the army transporting bomb materials through the city, and that the accident was caused by the driver suffering a sudden heart attack:
Tumblr media
Daredevil vol. 1 #164 by Roger McKenzie, Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, Glynis Wein, and John Costanza
Perhaps most compellingly (at least to me), Tony Stark's notes on Daredevil in the Civil War Files identify a Stark Industries project (under the leadership of Tony's father) as the source of the substance, which is referred to as radioactive waste:
Tumblr media
Civil War Files #1 by Anthony Flamini, Stuart Vandal, Ronald Byrd, Madison Carter, et al.
Mark Waid added one more detail, which gave voice to something that had previously just been implied: that this dangerous substance—whatever it was—was not supposed to be going through a populated area at all:
Tumblr media
Caption: "That's when the driver opted to finally look up. His tires screaming, his cargo tumbled loose. It had been secured with the same kind of care one would expect—from a fly-by-night company that thought it'd be okay to illegally transport toxic waste through New York traffic." Daredevil vol. 3 #23 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, Javier Rodriguez, and Joe Caramagna
To this, I might add the inference that it was likely being driven through Hell's Kitchen in particular because it was (at that time) a low income neighborhood where the authorities would be less likely to notice or care.
Waid's description of the accident, and the visual of barrels of toxic waste rather than a radioactive cylinder, are reminiscent of the alternate universe version of Matt's origin that Frank Miller and John Romita, Jr. presented in Man Without Fear—which also included the juicy detail of lawyers for the corporation showing up at Matt and his father's apartment afterward and strong-arming Jack into not pressing charges.
But yes, though I understand keeping the science involved in superhero origin stories non-specific, this is definitely an area of the Daredevil lore that could use further clarification. For real-world inspiration, here's an interesting New York Times article from 1985 about the transportation of nuclear waste through New York City. This part in particular seems relevant, and fits the timing of the publication of Daredevil #1 in 1964:
"Brookhaven has had a nuclear reactor operating since 1954. From 1954 to 1976, the spent fuel - radioactive uranium - was carried by truck into New York City, across the 59th Street Bridge, north on Third Avenue and across town to the George Washington Bridge. It then went south to a site in South Carolina for reprocessing. But in 1976 the city passed a local law banning the shipments, and triggering a battle over who has authority to control the shipments."
Maybe Matt was blinded by radioactive uranium? That transport route doesn't hit Hell's Kitchen at all, but I will also point out that Matt's childhood neighborhood wasn't specified as being Hell's Kitchen until Daredevil #164. At the very least, we know that toxic stuff was going through Manhattan in 1964, so if you were interested in a potential real-world source for more details to add to Matt's accident, that seems like a good place to look.

Erin Reed at Erin In The Morning:
Republicans have ramped up an anti-transgender fear campaign for the 2024 election, hoping to sway voters in their favor. Many ads focus on incarcerated transgender individuals and gender-affirming care, with millions of dollars funneled into anti-trans messages during prime-time sporting events. Others target Democratic Senate and House candidates, claiming they would “allow men into women’s bathrooms.” Some school board mailers pledge to keep transgender athletes out of school sports. Still others argue in debates that by excluding transgender people, they are somehow protecting women—often used to deflect criticism for their anti-abortion stances. While these ads and tactics have historically fallen short, this year more Republicans than ever are centering their platforms on anti-trans policies.
If there’s one constant this year, it’s that Republicans across the ballot have put their faith in an anti-trans agenda. According to an ongoing database, at least 100 races and growing prominently feature transgender issues. While some of these races feature Democratic candidates defending their pro-transgender records, the majority of these races center on attacks targeting opponents who support transgender rights. And these aren’t limited to high-profile races like the presidency or Senate, which have dominated headlines. Anti-trans rhetoric is appearing in local legislative races, school boards, and more. By now, Donald Trump’s ads are familiar to everyone, running alongside sporting events nationwide. These ads claim that Kamala Harris “gave sex change surgeries to prisoners,” referencing two cases where incarcerated transgender individuals received gender-affirming care in jail. Under U.S. law and the Eighth Amendment, providing medically necessary care, as determined by a doctor, is required—a policy decision made during the Trump administration. Both Harris and Tim Walz have responded to these ads: Harris criticized Trump for “spending $20 million on those ads, trying to create a sense of fear in the voters,” while Walz defended transgender people against the attacks at length just days later.
Senate races across the United States are also filled with anti-trans advertising. Nearly every competitive Senate race with a Democratic candidate has seen that candidate targeted by such ads. Leading the charge is the Senate Leadership Fund, which has committed at least $80 million to this cycle, with the majority of its ads targeting transgender individuals. These ads have targeted Jackie Rosen (D-NV), John Tester (D-MT), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Bob Casey (D-PA), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI). Meanwhile, Republican candidates, like Mike Rogers—running against Elissa Slotkin for Michigan’s open Senate seat—have deflected from their strict anti-abortion stances during televised debates, instead claiming they will “protect women” by excluding transgender people. U.S. House races are no different; at least 20 tightly contested races feature Republican candidates who have sponsored significant anti-transgender bills, run anti-trans ads, and made opposition to transgender rights a major part of their 2024 campaigns. Anthony D’Esposito, running in a toss-up election in NY-04, a D+5 district, has focused heavily on transgender sports bans, backing a local ban in Nassau County. One ad from D’Esposito’s campaign highlights the endorsement of anti-trans swimmer Riley Gaines. Other republicans in close races that have targeted transgender people include John James in MI-10, Jen Kiggans in VA-02, Nick LaLota in NY-01, and dozens more. [...] The year 2024 may not be the first to feature an onslaught of anti-trans advertisements, but it has certainly seen the highest volume in history. Republicans are projected to spend nearly $100 million on these ads, making anti-trans messaging a central theme from the bottom to the top of the ticket. However, political analysts and public opinion polls question the strategy: a recent Data for Progress poll shows that voters overwhelmingly reject candidates who make supporting anti-trans legislation a prominent focus of their campaign, with a majority—including Republicans—expressing fatigue over the issue dominating the 2024 cycle. Historically, such ads have often fallen flat, with targeted candidates winning nearly every time this approach has been used.
More than 100+ Republican candidates in various races are running on bashing trans people to incite fear.

(JTA) — A Las Vegas man threatened to kill Sen. Jacky Rosen, the Nevada Jewish Democrat, federal officials said, lacing his threats with antisemitic invective and anger at her advocacy for Israel while it is at war with Hamas.
Between Oct. 11 and Oct. 19, John Anthony Miller, 44, left numerous threatening messages on the office phone of a Nevada U.S. senator, the Nevada U.S. attorney said in a statement Monday announcing Miller’s arrest. On Oct. 17,  “he threatened to assault, kidnap, or murder” her “with intent to impede, intimidate, or interfere” with her official duties, the statement said. The following day, he tried to enter a federal building where she keeps an office.
The statement and court papers filed Friday, when Miller appeared in court, do not name the senator, but Rosen’s office confirmed to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that she was the target.
In one of the Oct. 17 voicemails, Miller allegedly said, “You done picked your side, bitch, and you done chose evil. I don’t give a f— if you were born into it or not, bitch, you are f—ing evil, bitch, and we are going to exterminate you.”
In an Oct. 19 call, the caller lashed out at Rosen’s Jewish heritage and her Israel advocacy, according to the charges. He believed Rosen was going to advocate for American Israelis, whom he believes number 450,000, to return to the United States to commit war crimes.
“I’m pretty sure she would not make it illegal for these savage Israeli settlers to come back, and 450,000 of them are American and are able to commit war crimes and come back and forth, back and forth,” the caller said. “She lets her own family members kill these Palestinians in the West Bank.”
On Oct. 18, the charges allege, Miller attempted to enter Lloyd D. George Courthouse, where Rosen has an office. He was denied entry and allegedly walked down Las Vegas Boulevard shouting profanities, including “to kill every Israeli terror-f—ing-rist.”
Rosen, a former synagogue president, has been at the forefront of combating antisemitism and Israel advocacy in the Senate, chairing the Bipartisan Task Forces for Combating Antisemitism alongside Oklahoma Republican Sen. James Lankford. Just days after Oct. 7, Rosen joined a bipartisan delegation to visit Israel and show support.
Her office issued a press release after that visit with the headline, “Senator Rosen Is The Only Jewish Woman And Former Synagogue President Serving In The United States Senate.”
The release quoted her saying, after meeting with families of Israelis taken hostage on Oct. 7, “As the only Jewish mother serving in the Senate, hearing their stories and seeing their pain and heartbreak was gut-wrenching. “

A Las Vegas man was arrested earlier this month and now faces federal charges after he allegedly threatened to kidnap, assault or murder a U.S. senator.
According to a criminal complaint, the Department of Justice said 43-year-old John Anthony Miller left several threatening voicemails for the office of a U.S. senator between Oct. 11 and Oct. 19.
Fox News confirmed voicemails were left for Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., who is Jewish.
The criminal complaint said that on Oct. 17, Miller threatened to assault, kidnap, or even murder Rosen — who was not named in the complaint — with intent to impede, intimidate or interfere with her duties as a senator.
The voicemails are filled with profanity and detailed in the criminal complaint.
For example, Miller said in one of the voicemails, "All these [expletive]ing lies is in your [expletive]ing hands, you [expletive]ing [expletive], and I’m gonna [expletive]ing see you soon, you [expletive]ing sellout [expletive]ing [expletive] [expletive]."
The next day, Miller went to the Lloyd D. George Courthouse in Las Vegas and told officials he was going to see the U.S. senator and refused to cooperate with a court security guard.
Ultimately, he was denied entry into the courthouse, became upset and started yelling and shouting profanities.
On Oct. 19, Miller left more voicemails for Rosen, including one when he asked if the senator had any family members who were Israeli settlers, suggesting if she did, he was pretty sure she would not make it illegal for them to come back to the U.S.
"...450 thousand of ‘em are American and are able to co-commit war crimes and come back and forth. Huh? Yeah, I-I-I pretty sure she is. Pretty sure she is. And she ain’t gon do a damn thing," the criminal complaint claims Miller said. "She lets her own family members kill these Pe-Palestinians in the West Bank. The Christians in the West Bank. Senator, I’m sorry to say, but yah know what, you’re a piece of [expletive] and you’re gonna burn in [expletive]ing [expletive] for your [expletive]ing crimes."
Miller was arrested on Oct. 26, and now faces one count of threatening a federal official.
"Threats against public officials should be taken seriously," a spokesperson for Rosen said. "Senator Rosen trusts the U.S. Attorney’s office and federal law enforcement to handle this matter."
Miller is expected to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Elayna J. Youchah on Nov. 13, 2023.
