Seattle Mariners-Minnesota Twins Series Preview
5.6.24-Luis Castillo RHP (3-4) 3.46 ERA Vs. Simeon Woods Richardson RHP (1-0) 2.45 ERA
5.7.24-Emerson Hancock RHP (3-3) 4.75 ERA Vs. Bailey Ober RHP (3-1) 4.55 ERA
5.8.24-George Kirby RHP (3-2) 3.76 ERA Vs. Chris Paddack RHP (3-1) 4.78 ERA
5.9.24-Logan Gilbert RHP (3-0) 1.69 ERA Vs. Pablo Lopez RHP (3-2) 4.30 ERA
The Mariners At A Glance-The Mariners have been playing good baseball lately and are (7-3) in their past ten games. They are (19-15), which sits them at the top of the American League West. The Mariners didn't make too many moves to their roster. They gave up a lot to trade for Jorge Polanco and signed Mitch Garver. Ryan Stanek was signed to bulk up the bullpen. The offense averages 3.9 runs per game and is hitting .223 as a team. Cal Raleigh leads the team with eight homers and sixteen RBI. Jorge Polanco is off to a cooler start in Seattle. He is hitting .193 with five homers and thirteen RBI. Mitch Gaver is only hitting .156 with three homers. The Mariners starting pitchers own a 3.11 ERA, which is third-best in the Majors. Their bullpen has been solid with a 2.72 ERA, which is also third-best in baseball. Seattle has a lot of good young pitching, who you'll see in this series. Logan Gilbert has a 1.69 ERA in seven starts. Luis Castillo has strikeout stuff and the Twins will miss Bryce Miller in this series. Andres Munoz has locked down five saves. Cody Bolton, Tyson Miller, and Tayler Saucedo are off to good starts in the bullpen.
The Twins At A Glance- The Red Sox halted the Twins twelve-game winning streak with a 9-2 win over them on Sunday. The winning streak got the Twins up to second place in the American League Central. The Twins sit just 2.5 games behind the Indians for first place. The homestand continues this week with the Mariners coming to town for four games. Max Kepler has been hot with a .421 average over the past week. Trevor Larnach is hitting .385 in his past four games. Justin Topa had another rehab outing on Sunday and is inching closer to his return. He was part of the return in the Jorge Polanco trade. The Twins received Anthony DeSclafani, who will not pitch this year, Justin Topa, Gabriel Gonzalez, and Darren Bowen. The Twins starting staff is slowly getting better with a 4.57 ERA. The bullpen owns a 3.08 ERa, which is seventh-best in the big leagues. Jorge Alcala hasn't allowed a run in nine innings this year. Jhoan Duran looks like his old self since his return.
What To Watch For- The Mariners went (4-3) against the Twins in 2023. The two teams split a four-game series in Seattle in July then the Mariners took two of three at Target Field in late-July. Luis Castillo is (1-1) with a 5.63 ERA in five starts against the Twins. Simeon Woods Richardson and Emerson Hancock haven't faced their opponent before. Bailey Ober is (2-0) with a 4.20 ERA in three starts against the Mariners. George Kirby is (1-0) with a 4.09 ERA in two starts versus the Twins. Chris Paddack is (3-1) with a 2.63 ERA in four starts against the M's. Logan Gilbert is (2-0) with a 1.69 ERA in three starts against the Twins. Pablo Lopez is (0-1) with a 3.00 ERA in two starts against Seattle. These two teams are hot and it should make for a good series.

Ex-Reds RHP DeSclafani to Giants on 1-year deal
The San Francisco Giants added a veteran option for the rotation alongside ace Johnny Cueto by signing right-handed pitcher Anthony DeSclafani to a one-year contract, the team announced Wednesday.
The deal is worth $6 million in salary, a source told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The Giants still will look to add another top-tier starter, according to president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi.
“He was an early target for us. We’ve talked a good amount about looking to add some starting pitching to our roster and take some pressure off some of our younger pitchers,” Zaidi said. “DeSclafani is a guy that we think comes with some ceiling. He’s got really good stuff, good velocity on the fastball, a lot of characteristics that we look for. Obviously didn’t have his best season in 2020 but in 2019 he really had a nice year. That would be a great outcome for us if he can even get back to that level as recently as 2019. We think there’s even upside beyond that.”
With the Reds in his sixth MLB season, DeSclafani went 1-2 with a 7.22 ERA over nine games — seven starts — spanning 33⅔ innings in 2020.
Me and my family are excited for this new opportunity! Let’s go @SFGiants https://t.co/4vvbJ7rpto
— Anthony DeSclafani (@ADeSclafani) December 16, 2020
“Me and my family are excited for this new opportunity! Let’s go @SFGiants,” DeSclafani posted on Twitter.
To which Giants manager Gabe Kapler responded, “Let’s go!”
DeSclafani missed all of 2017 with an elbow injury but has otherwise been fairly durable, making at least 20 starts in 2015, ’16, ’18 and ’19.
The 30-year-old DeSclafani can earn an additional $250,000 in performance bonuses based on innings pitched. He could make $62,500 each for 140, 160, 180 and 200 innings.
DeSclafani could help fill a vacancy in the rotation given the departures of Jeff Samardzija and Drew Smyly from the Giants, who missed the playoffs on the final day of Kapler’s first season as manager.
The Giants and Cueto have decided the right-hander won’t pitch winter ball in his native Dominican Republic after all, given this year was his first quasi-full season back from Tommy John surgery.
Young pitchers Tyler Beede and Logan Webb are working back from surgeries.
San Francisco has 39 players on the 40-man roster.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
