@/diegokravetz @/jorgemacri @/m_cuneolibarona"

Blood libels began with the 1840 Damascus Affair
Blood libels are again being levelled at Jews in the current climate of antisemitism, resurgent from the Israel-Hamas war.  Charging Jews with the false accusation that they used the blood of Christian children for their religious rituals has a long history in the Christian world. But the first blood libel to penetrate the Muslim world – also spread by Christians –  occurred in 1840, and was to lead to dozens more in the Ottoman empire, and also the first  international Jewish attempt to fight it. Rabbi Menachem Levine writes for Aish (with thanks: Edna):

Jewish prisoner preparing his defence
The Damascus Affair of 1840 was an infamous blood libel that became international news and led to one of the first instances in which Jewish communities around the world worked together to demand justice for another Jewish community. The Damascus blood libel is recognized as one of the turning points of modern Jewish history when world Jewry realized the importance of uniting to advocate for each other.
On February 5, 1840, Father Thomas, an Italian Friar of the Capuchin Order who lived in Damascus, disappeared with his Muslim servant Ibrahim Amara. They were assumed murdered, possibly by businessmen with whom Thomas had had shady dealings or by a Muslim who was infuriated by an insult to Islam that Father Thomas had uttered.
But the Jews were to bear the blame as the Capuchin friars began spreading rumors that the Jews had murdered the two men to use their blood for Passover. This led to one of history’s most famous blood libels, the Damascus Blood Libel, better known as the Damascus Affair of 1840.

In his article for Dorot journal (Summer 2021) Alain Farhi has more detail on the malign role played by the French consul in Beirut, Ulysse Ratti-Menton,  and the  Jewish families accused of the murder:
Ratti-Menton convinced Sherif Pasha that the Jews were responsible for the alleged ritual murders and, as a result, was given full investigative powers. RattiMenton, based on an extracted confession from a barber (Salomon Negrin) of complicity but not participation, rounded up eight Jewish men including Salomon Hayek; Murad el-Fattal; Jacob Antebi, the chief rabbi of Damascus; Aaron Harari; Aaron Stambouli; Joseph Lañado; Moses Abulafia; Moses Salonicli and Aslan Farhi (son of Raphael), Joseph and Murad Farhi. They were arrested and harshly interrogated by Jean-Baptiste Beaudin, a French diplomat seeking more confessions.
Rabbi Antebi and Lañado died under torture while Abulafia converted to Islam to avoid death. On February 14, Raphael El Mouallem Farhi, banker and head of the Farhi families of Damascus, was placed under house arrest with his servants in a government house for 90 days. On March 23, 1840, Mayer Farhi (my direct ancestor) was arrested and imprisoned. He was 55 years old and had an estimated 500,000 piasters net worth. The ghurush or piaster is the Arabic spelling of the kuruş which was the currency of the Ottoman Empire. A bribe of 24,400 piasters (£244) was offered by his wife Deborah to spare him 1,000 lashes of flagellation in prison.
Ratti-Menton published in European newspapers the alleged confessions. In the meantime, the Muslim population raided the Jobar synagogue, destroyed sefarim and attacked properties in the Jewish Quarter. Finally, the Ottoman police intervened to stop the Muslim attacks on Jewish residents.

New York City, NY -- Last week, rei brown released his newest single "Get Me Out." an energetic track that speaks on mental health. The punchy track spans just over 2 minutes long and is accompanies by a short film, written and directed by Daniel Antebi. The intensity of the instrumentation adds an urgency that doubles as cathartic, especially with ruminating verses that are interspersed throughout the track. rei brown's lyrics are refreshingly honest, making "Get Me Out" the type of song you want to blast repeatedly when you get trapped in mental tunnel.
rei brown · Get Me Out
On the track, rei brown shares “Get Me Out" was one of the first songs I made after Xeno. I had just gotten off of a series of tours, one of which, I had an episode of psychosis/derealization. Unfortunately it’s not a new experience for me either, I’ve had a bunch of ‘episodes’ or incidents for the past 10 years. It was impossible to communicate what I was going through to my friends, and worst of all, I still had to go on stage and perform most nights. I kind of went to sleep wondering how I even get through it all… As always it kind of just eventually got better, but I think when I was writing the chorus, I subconsciously just drew from that recent experience.”

The Looper is a fascinating piece of musical technology.  I’ve seen Judith Silver use it on Zoom, and this recording by Ayelet Ori Benita is the second time I’ve seen someone build up a whole piece using one.  I love how it gives depth of sound without undue weight -- there’s nothing that seems muddled or murky in this piece, just calm, almost tiled, waves of music.
The text is a religious poem by Rabbi Raphael Antebi (1873-1919) about the healing powers of the Divine, in which the poet begs for healing of body, mind, and soul.  I don’t think this is the original melody that Rabbi Antebi had in mind, but I do think that it captures the spirit he was trying to achieve.

After a lot this year, i am coming back to myself. Slowly slowly. I felt it painting. I felt it when im gentler to the contradictions in life. I'm healing a little from the year. I need to heal my body more than anything. I have gone to parties, laughed so hard i cried, enjoyed, loved, lived this year in the biggest way i could, but my body needs healing. This summer needs to be more sensory. More comforting. Because i can still hear sirens even when i know they arent going. And every shouting makes me think its a terrorist outside and thats october 7th is happening again. And every flight my body thinks will be antebi or the plane will get shot down. Thank gd, my emunah is in a good place. But my bodys emunah is lacking. Its subconscious just from living. So it needs to heal. Painting

'It is heartbreaking': Maritime Syrian and Turkish communities react to earthquake and devastation
Thousands are dead and tens of thousands injured following the earthquake that has devastated Syria and Turkey.
“They are living in the street, laying down," said Omar Antebi, a Syrian Canadian. "There are no tents and there is nothing.”
Antebi left Syria ten years ago. Family members stayed behind.
“Four uncles and their wives and their children and my grandma and grandpa," said Antebi.
Antebi said, the cruel irony is, many fled the war in Syria to live safely in Turkey.
“They are escaping people’s bombing, and now they are experiencing God’s disaster.”
Rafat Harb, owner of the Syriana Market in Halifax, has spent many hours watching the horrifying images on TV.
“We have family there, it was not easy,” said Harb. “It is very hard when we see all the buildings come down and there is a lot of children under the building, and they couldn’t find them."
Ilker Dalgic volunteers with the Turkish Society of Nova Scotia and has experience when it comes to surviving earthquakes.
“Once I saw the magnitude as 7.8 I understood how it could be devastating and terrible because 24 years ago I also experienced one at 7.4 magnitude," said Dalgic. “It is heartbreaking.”
The scope of this tragedy has hit home with the entire Turkish community, including the owners of the Turkish restaurant Efes who are donating $2 per order for one full week to assist with earthquake aid.
“All of us knows someone who lost relatives. I have a friend who lost his in-laws," said Dalgic.
The Turkish society wants the government of Canada to act quickly and provide money, manpower and resources to aid those devastated by the earthquakes.
