Extended credits for Museum at Tomorrow episode 5
Below the cut are all of the folks who I used (and asked to be credited) for recordings in Museum at Tomorrow episode 5- specifically, the "This is not for You" recordings.
(The list was too long for podcast episode descriptions)
These recordings were mixed into the soundscape of the show, heavily processed- so you may or may not be able to pick out your voice. Each unique recording is preserved as rhythem, timber, and shape within the episode.
Thank you for your work in creating the canvas of this piece.

Week 6 - ANSEL ADAMS
nice hat
What group did Ansel Adams start?
Adams helped to found Group F/64 or F.64 in the San Francisco Bay Area, along with fellow photographers Edward Weston, and Imogen Cunningham.
Find the groups manifesto online
Why did he set up this group?
His aim with Group F/64 was to have photography seen as a true art form. In short, they call for “Pure Photography” meaning to let photography be photography and let photographers develop their techniques within, to explore new methods and ideas and not to borrow ideas and styles from other art forms to gain acceptance.
What type of photography is best known for?
Ansel was known for his Black & White Landscape and Environmental photography.
What did Ansel first train as?
He trained as a musician and piano player, learning from the age of 12.
When did his love for photography begin?
His love of photography began from going on family trips to Yosemite National Park, Nevada.
What was his first camera?
Kodak No. 1 boxed Brownie Model B.
What age was Ansel when he had his first images published?
Ansel had his first images published at the age of 19.
What type of techniques did start experimenting with?
Ansel experimented with soft focus, bromoil process and Pictorialism.
How much did Ansel sell his first portfolio for?
First first portfolio “ Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras ” sold for $3900, a great success at the time.
What Artists did Ansel meet whilst in New Mexico? Who was a huge influence on Ansel?
In New Mexico Ansel befriended artists Georgia O’Keeffe, John Marin, poet Robinson Jeffers and photographer Paul Strand.
Find out more about the artist that influenced Ansel Adams, can you see the influence of this artist on Ansel’s work?
Paul Strand was a great influence on Ansel and pushed him to advance his work in photography to a higher level. Strand was a modernist photographer, founded the Photo League who used their work to promote social and political causes. His photography used a lot of strong contrast with light and shadow.
Why was group F64 significant?
F64 or F/64 was a size of aperture popular with Ansel and like minded photographers at the time in Large format photography. This aperture gave great depth of field and sharpness to the image when used right.
What is Pictorialism?
Pictorialism is a photography aesthetic that was very popular in late 19th and early 20th century. A method to create an image rather than document an image. To empathize the beauty of the subject matter. through tone balance and composition.
What age did Ansel open his first gallery?
At age 31 he opened up his own gallery in San Francisco.
What happened in a trip to Mexico in 1941?
He took one of his most famous images “Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico”
How long was Ansel Adams career?
His photographic career started in the early 1920s to 1950s until his health began to decline Be he worked on further still to the 1970s when he took a portrait of President Jimmy Carter in 1979. His career spanning the best part of a 60 years.
Along with Fred Archer, what did Ansel Adams pioneer?
The Zone System
Research the system. What is it? Can it be applied to digital photography?
Zone system is a method to determine the correct exposure for film photography and film developing. Using full tone graduation from Black through to Grey and to White, dividing each step of the grade into eleven zones from 0 to X.
It is a precursor to the Histogram on a digital camera.
What was Ansel’s biggest selling image called. Show an example of this.
“Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico” was one of his hottest selling pictures, selling more than 13000 prints, banking him a nice bug sum of dosh.
Another famous landscape was “Monolith, the Face of Half Dom”.
What type of camera did Ansel mainly use?
Ansel used several cameras throughout his career for different jobs and purposes. For landscapes he used a 4x5 View Camera which produced very sharp large format images. When doing medium format images, he used a Zeiss Ikon Super Iknota B camera.
Why did Ansel use a red filter?
The red filter darkens any blue colours or light and creates a stronger low-key contrast.
What typical technical camera settings would Ansel use and why?
Long exposure and small aperture.
Steichen and Stieglitz? Who are they and what are they known for?
Edward Steichen was a photographer and art curator. Alfred Stieglitz was a modern art painter and photographer. Both tried to get photography seen as a style of Fine Art, borrowing methods and techniques from other art forms such as the manipulation of the image, using filters etc. Stark contrast from Ansel Adams and Group f/64 who experimented techniques of photography without borrowing from other art forms. Although they (Group f/64) also did use manipulation methods in their work.

Ansel Adams
What group did Ansel Adams start?
Ansel Adams started the photography group F64.
Why did he set up this group?
Adams started the photography group F64 to try and get photography accepted as an art form at a time where it was customary for photographers to “borrow other mediums of art for goal of acceptance”.
What type of photography is best known for?
Ansel Adams was mostly known for his landscapes.
What did Ansel first train as?
Adams first trained as a musician and studied piano and composition.
When did his love for photography begin?
Ansel’s love for photography began when he was young and he would take family trips to Yosemite National Park.
What was his first camera?
His first camera was a KODAK Brownie Box which his father gave to him because of his interest in photography.
What age was Ansel when he had his first images published?
Ansel Adams was 19 when he had his first images published.
What type of techniques did start experimenting with?
Adams began experimenting with Pictorial techniques in the early stages of his photography career.
How much did Ansel sell his first portfolio for?
Adams’ first portfolio sold for $4,000 (equivalent to over $50,000 today).
What Artists did Ansel meet whilst in New Mexico?
When in New Mexico, Ansel met Georgia O'Keeffe, John Marin and Paul Strand.
Who was a huge influence on Ansel?
Paul Strand was Ansel’s biggest influence and helped further Ansel’s career.
Find out more about the artist that influenced Ansel Adams, can you see the influence of this artist on Ansel’s work?
Paul Strand’s photography heavily inspired Ansel. When looking at and comparing Strand and Adams’ work we can spot similarities. The first is the striking black and white which both worked with. Other similarities are seen in the landscape and nature images. Both used leading lines in some of their photographs.
Why was group F64 significant?
Group F64 was significant to the advancement of photography and the acceptance of ‘pure’ or ‘straight’ photography.
Find the groups manifesto online
The group manifesto can be found here: Manifesto
What is Pictorialism?
Pictorialism is an artistic style of photography. It is described as being like a painting and looking similar to the work of artists from the 19th century. Pictorialism was not considered pure photography because of the work that went into the composition, the planning and the image that the photographer wanted to convey.
What age did Ansel open his first gallery?
Ansel opened his first gallery in San Francisco when he was 31 years old.
What happened in a trip to Mexico in 1941?
Adams’ most famous photograph “Moonrise over Hernandez” was captured during his 1941 trip to New Mexico.
How long was Ansel Adams career?
Ansel Adams’ career lasted almost 60 years, from his mid-twenties to early-eighties.
Along with Fred Archer what did Ansel Adams pioneer?
Fred Archer and Ansel Adams pioneered the Zone System.
Research the system? What is it? Can it be applied to digital photography?
The Zone System is a technique used for guaranteeing good exposure in a photograph, even in particularly difficult lighting. It works by dividing the scene into ten different tonal zones (the zones are numbered with roman numerals), 0 being black and X (10) being white. The Zone System can be applied to digital photography but not in the same way, digital photographers would generally use zones III to VII.
What was Ansel’s biggest selling image called? Show an example of this.
“Moon, Hernandez, New Mexico”
What type of camera did Ansel mainly use?
Ansel mainly used a Deardorf 8x10 view camera and sometimes used Hasselblad.
Why did Ansel use a red filter?
He used a red filter to create more contrast in his photographs.
What typical technical camera settings would Ansel use and why?
Typically, the camera settings Ansel would use were long exposure and small aperture. This was to ensure maximum sharpness and depth of field in photographs.
Steichen and Stieglitz? Who are they and what are they known for?
Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz were well known photographers who, like Adams, helped to get photography accepted as an art form.

I was tagged by the amazing @gert-dorkes :)
rules: write 10 recent songs you like/love (only one song per band/artist) and then tag 10 people
i know some of these aren’t “recent” exaclty, but they’re new discoveries for me so:

Inspiration - Ansel Adams
What Group did he start?
F64 Group
Why did he set this group up?
He wanted to give photographers more spotlight in the industry as they where mostly put in the background and not appreciated well enough for their photography work.
What type of photography is he best known for?
Landscape
What did Ansel first train as?
A pianist (someone who plays the piano) and overall a musician
When did his love for photography begin?
It begun on family trips to Yosemite National Park (California’s Sierra Nevada mountains)
What was his first camera?
Kodak Browning Box Camera
What age was Ansel when his first images were published?
19 years of age
What type of techniques did he start experimenting with?
etching and soft focus
How much did Ansel sell his first portfolio for?
$4,000, but $50,000 as of todays value
What artists did Ansel meet in New Mexico?
Robinson Jeffers, Georgia O'Keeffe, John Marin and Paul Strand
Who was a huge influence on Ansel?
Paul Strand
Finding out more about the artist that influenced Ansel Adams, can you see the influence of this artist on Ansel’s work?
Not really, most of Paul Strand’s work seems to be portrait and some landscape but when you compare it to Ansel’s landscape photographs you can see the use of high contrast and sharpness that Paul Strand has also used in some of his photographs as well.
Why was Group F64 significant?
To stop borrowing traditional artistry techniques and develop photography as it is.
Find the groups Manifesto online
“Group f/64 or f.64 was a group founded by seven 20th-century San Francisco Bay Area photographers who shared a common photographic style characterized by sharply focused and carefully framed images seen through a particularly Western (U.S.) viewpoint. In part, they formed in opposition to the pictorialist photographic style that had dominated much of the early 20th century, but moreover, they wanted to promote a new modernist aesthetic that was based on precisely exposed images of natural forms and found objects.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_f/64
What is pictorialism?
It’s an international style and aesthetic movement that dominated photography during the later 19th and early 20th centuries. A pictorial photograph appears to lack a sharp focus, it also gets printed in one or more colors other than black and white and may also have visible brush strokes or other manipulation of the surface.
What age did Ansel open his first gallery?
31
What happened in a trip to Mexico in 1941?
He photographed a scene of the Moon rising above a modest village with snow-covered mountains in the background, under a dominating black sky. The photograph is one of his most famous and is named “Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico”
How long was Ansel Adam’s career?
60 years
Along with Fred Archer what did Ansel Adams pioneer?
The zone system
Research the system? what is it?
The zone system is an exacting system of image-making, a method of achieving a desired final print through a deeply technical understanding of how tonal range is recorded and developed in exposure, negative development, and printing. The resulting clarity and depth of such images characterized his photography.
Can it be applied to digital photography?
Yes
What was Ansel’s biggest selling image called? Show an example of this.
“Moonrise over Hernandez”
What type of camera did Ansel mainly use?
Hasselblad, a medium-format camera that uses 120mm roll film and is known for its high quality lenses (the individual negatives are 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 inches).
Why did Ansel use a red filter?
To lower the contrast to the photographs that had an increased contrast to them.
Steichan and Stieglitz? Who are they and what are they known for?
They were American photographers active in the early 1900′s to help the beginning of the pictorialist movement.

Ansel Adams GEM Presentation Breakdown
Ansel Adams was born in 1902 in San Francisco, and he’s widely considered to be one of, if not the absolute most influential photographers in the history of the medium. He was best known for his black and white photography, especially his work on the American West, which was deeply entwined with his lifelong advocacy of environmental conservation. He’s also famous for his work with the National Park System, which he was commissioned to photograph by the US Department of the Interior to promote awareness and tourism of the parks. and He was also a key figure in the establishment of various photography centers, including the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, and the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona. Additionally, he co-founded the Aperture photography magazine, and was commissioned to make the first presidential portrait photograph of Jimmy Carter in 1979.
In terms of his contribution to photographic techniques, he was most notable for his creation of the Zone System with Fred Archer. This technique is used for determining the most ideal exposure times/strengths for developing film, and is based on sensitometry, or the study of photosensitive materials. This provides photographers with a methodical way of making distinctions between their visualization of the subject(s) and what they need to do in order to achieve the desired final result. Photographers use this technique by taking light readings of key elements in their shot, matching them with a particular Zone, measured from 0 to X (0 being pure black and X being pure white), and then determine how the film must be exposed and developed in order to achieve the desired tone. In the George Eastman Museum, the Ansel Adams piece that I used was Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico (1941). It’s one of Adams’ most recognizable works, and it was reprinted multiple times before the final piece was created. Based on the luminance, or brightness, of the moon (250 candelas per square foot), Adams aligned the shot with Zones V and VII when composing. He also used ten developer-water cycles with no agitation to minimize the possibility of any uneven sky

In approaching “the full possibilities of the medium” mentioned in the above quote, one of Ansel Adams’ most significant contributions to the art of photography was the Zone System he and Fred Archer developed in 1939-1940. It was a method for realizing the desired look of a finished photograph by selectively adjusting particular aspects of the picture– in and out of the darkroom - such as, among many other technical and formal elements, value contrasts and tonal variations. Consequently, Adams was able to leave us a substantial body of work that advanced the art of black and white landscape photography to extraordinary levels of expressivity.
In so doing, he further expanded the parameters of the medium beyond “straight” or strictly objective replication of the physical world. “Photography is more than a medium for factual communication of ideas,” he once observed, adding, “It is a creative art…You don’t take a photograph, you make it.”
Adams may or may not have foreseen the coming of our electronic age and all the astonishing possibilities it affords for making compelling pictures. Far beyond his Zone System, we’ve seen the emergence of an entirely new digital language and methodology for enhancing the photographic image. Nevertheless, he knew in his day – as do like-minded artists of today - that elevating photography to the status of true fine art was always a matter of harnessing the mechanical limitations of the camera’s eye to that of the artist’s larger field of experiential vision. A matter of marrying the tangible to the ineffable. Real artistry in photography demands an intuitive seeing beyond the obvious to deliver a timeless essence.
In her own laudable efforts to transcend everyday visions of physical reality, Carolyn Jacob boarded the digital photo-effects train some years ago. Think of her perhaps as a well-traveled tourist, avidly looking to see what she has called the “picture in the picture.” An essence. Accordingly, she has created a thoroughly refreshing travelogue, so to speak, of otherwise conventional art destinations including, among others, architectural, floral, and still-life subjects.
In this very crowded exhibit, her images printed on canvas are especially arresting. With these elegant compositions, we can better appreciate the exhibit title, “Painting With Light.” In their fluidity of line, shimmering and subtly blended colors, the suggestion of rich textures, and intriguing tendencies towards eloquent abstraction, there is often the distinct sense, albeit illusory, of a facile painter’s brush at work.
Like any painting, a photograph is a visual language. And like any given spoken language, a visual language can have many vernacular variances. If we consider it a matter of dialect, then Carol Jacob speaks a particularly delectable one.
