ok i wanna make my own tips post for the redditors

hello welcome :] here's some things i've noticed it seems a lot of you aren't aware of. i might add more later:

first of all, PLEASE turn on custom theme! you don't have to actually make or find a theme yourself as it gives you a default one, (but it is really fun and good to personalize your blog however you want) but doing this makes it easier to view and search your own blog, as i will describe later. this makes it so that you will show up at yoururl.tumblr.com and not just tumblr.com/yoururl it gives you your own page! it's good!! you can only tick this setting on desktop:

another very important thing: DO NOT FUCKING REPOST ART WITHOUT CREDIT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. honestly you should not report art without permission at all, but at LEAST credit the artist. and saying "idk who did this but credit to them" DOES NOT COUNT. take some time to reverse google image search and find the artist. if you can't find them, DON'T REPOST!!! turning the art into a meme doesn't mean you don't have to credit the artist!!!!!! AAHHH!! ok.

TAGS/SEARCHING in reblogs, all tags serve to do is (a) leave a bit of quiet commentary, if you're too shy to leave it in the actual body of the post or (b) organize posts on Your Blog Only. tagging a reblog does not make the post show up in the searchable tag. reblogs are not searchable through the tumblr search bar.

to find posts from a certain tag on your own blog, go to yoururl.tumblr.com/tagged/tag. you can also add /chrono to the end of that url to view the posts in chronological order! you actually don't need to tag original posts with every variation of a tag either. for example if you tag something as "r/196", it will show up when just "196" is searched for, because it contains "196" in it. so you dont NEED to tag the post "196, r196, r/196" etc. but i mean. do whatever u want. honestly i think a lot of veteran tumblr users don't even know that. but yeah tagging with a ton of variations like that is unnecessary unless you're spelling something differently or doing an abbreviation as well as a full title, such as "#what we do in the shadows, #wwdits"

also, your posts are searchable by literally any word in the post, whether it be the body, the tags, or even your url. so if your url has 'catboy' in it, and someone searches 'catboy' they will see all of your original posts in the tag lmao. it is pretty stupid but that's how it works.

on that note, FILTERING with filtering tags, it is very specific. so if youre content warning tagging something, please just tag it with the word, like "#blood" because if you tag it "#cw blood" or "#blood ///" people who just have "#blood" blocked, will still see the post! lots of veteran tumblr users don't seem to grasp this either 😭

you can filter out words as well as tags, but that can get tricky because if you filter out "rape" words like "grape" and "drape" will also be blocked, so i only use the word filter to block peoples urls. because even if you have someone blocked, you can still see people reblogging their posts, so if u don't wanna see them at all, block their url as a filtered word.

you can do all of this in the regular ol' 'settings' tab on desktop. on mobile it's settings -> general settings -> filtering

PAGES something i love about tumblr but is getting used less and less is the ability to make separate pages on your blog. the option to do so is all the way at the bottom on the theme customization panel. (only available on desktop tumblr)

nowadays a lot of people just make a carrd and provide a link to that, but tumblr allows you to make your own separate blog pages! a lot of people use this to make "about me" pages, since it provides a lot more freedom than just the "blog description" section! you can put images on there, and just completely code the whole thing yourself! unfortunately, these pages aren't visible on mobile unless you link to them in your blog description (see my blog as an example) using <a href="link">link title</a> lots of people have links like this in their descriptions that lead to about pages or carrds! you should click on these to learn more about the person you're following!!

some people have "DNI (do not interact)" or "BYF (before you follow)" pages to set boundaries on who they do or don't want following them, as a warning of like "hey if you fall under this criteria and you follow/interact with me, you're getting blocked" so those are good to check for! some folks have lots of strong opinions on these that theyre "stupid" or "useless" but really it's just a warning and setting boundaries. like, if you follow me and ur not supposed to, i'm just gonna block you anyway, it was just a warning that that's what was gonna happen!

speaking of blocking, just fuckin' block whoever you want whenever you want. if you find someone annoying just block them. if they post something you don't like just block them. there's no need to get into an argument. just block! and they're gone! wheeee!!

SIDEBLOGS!!! you can have separate blogs from your main one that are connected to your same account! some people have tooooons of sideblogs for every single fandom they're in, some people just use their main for everything. it's up to you!

note that you can only like posts, send asks, follow people, and reply to posts under your main blog url. sideblogs are just for posting and reblogging in a more organized manner :] it's good to say in the description of your side blog what your main blog is so people know who you are when you like and reply to posts and such! (and also to list your sideblogs somewhere on ur main for the same reason. i use the aforementioned about page for this ^u^)

um that's it for now! there's a lot of other things i could talk about, but i'm sure other posts are covering it.. these are just ones i really want to iterate, especially the tags thing cause i think a lot of tumblr users don't even realize that lol ^u^ i've been active as fuck on tumblr since 2013 so I can answer questions if you have any :)

some tips for writing blogs, especially those who are just starting out. these are some things that works for me and may or may not work for others.

how to add a read more link on mobile

type :readmore: on a free space, then hit the enter or return button

personally i think they’re very helpful because it lessens the space you take up in your dash, and might encourage more people to rb

+ you can also add this on a spot where it gives a sort of cliffhanger, essentially making people want to ‘read more’

headers, banners, and dividers

though not necessary, it’s good to have a title for your work. make sure it’s bold and doesn’t blend in with your notes (aka pairing, warnings, etc.). this also helps when someone wants to look up one of your works in your search bar

i don’t really make banners or covers for my works. but some good apps that i know of would be picsart and canva. if you’re looking for ideas, i definitely recommend going into canva

wondering how to make those really small, thin dividers? you can make them using picsart! to make a divider hit tools > free crop > brush > size (adjust it to your preference > then draw a line along the edge of your photo > save

using the divider you just saved, go back to picsart and edit it again > draw option > hit rainbow square at the bottom left corner > hit suction/droplet symbol right below the check mark > color in the white spots bc for some reason picsart glitches and makes dividers look white-ish

new blog? just opened an account?

this is gonna sound really frustrating. but... tumblr needs to check if you’re a bot or not. what does this mean? it’s likely that your first few posts won’t show up on the search bar. you may not even get to edit your header/pfp yet ://

this happened to me and there was no visibility on my account at ALL. what helped me get ‘verified’ is that i followed a LOT of accounts, liked a bunch of posts, made some posts here and there. now that lets tumblr know you’re not a bot

the tumblr tagging system usually only allows the first 5 tags in your post to show up. so, what can do you about this? only use FIVE or less tags in your post. wait about 15 minutes or more until you can add some more tags in your post, and they usually all show up like that

another important thing about using tags is not to generalize! especially if you’re using a popular tag. but also don’t specify it too much where barely anyone looks it up. for example, if you’re writing a gn piece about oikawa, i recommend you use the tags such as: oikawa x reader, haikyuu x reader, oikawa x gn!reader, haikyuu headcanons, etc

a good rule of thumb is to use character x reader tags first, then leave the full name or fandom tag last

FOR NSFW: tumblr doesn’t let any tags with nsfw show up. so, give your nsfw works another tag. maybe #namegetspicy idk, you figure it out

FOR WARNINGS: especially if you’re a dark content creator, i highly encourage you to add tw:xyz tags. if you already have a warning note at the top then that’s great. but even better for readers who prefer to actually block these tags that way they never get to see it

another important thing to note is that people have different timezones. it helps if you rb your work at a different time of the day, in case people missed it! (icymi) i’ve noticed that reblogging helps to make your post show up in the tags

interaction + feedback

first and foremost, you are not obligated to write for your followers, and neither are your followers obligated to interact with you. remember that everyone has their own individual lives, and they have their own things to do— so do you, too.

make friends! become mutuals with other writers, visit their ask box. i know it can be daunting having to initiate these things, but you might just turn out to have fun! you can’t expect people to interact with you if you’re not interacting (back). it’s... kind of a two way thing yk? no need to be afraid to interact with other writers. oh, and rb other writers works!

pspsps join tag games or do ask games. it’s fun and very interactive

it never hurts to ask for feedback. i usually do this in a more subtle way because i don’t really expect a full on analysis on my works. maybe a little, is this okay? or feedback appreciated. sometimes it takes a little bit of coaxing for the silent readers

formatting your posts and blog

i generally put in the title at the top in big, bold letters

then comes the header/divider. helps to make the post more... visually appealing ig?

it’s important to add warnings (if any) and the pairing. the audience is not all female, and it might be a little frustrating for male readers having to find out its an x fem reader piece like halfway through your fic

if you have multiple works posted, it’s really really helpful to have a navigation page!

you can organize the posts you make with tags! for example, if you’re shitposting, you can use a specific tag for that. if you have a nsfw related post (ESPECIALLY when your blog is open to the general audience) please make a tag for it

themes + colors

if you have a color in mind but don’t know which direction to go from there, i recommend looking up color + aesthetic

looking to use the same color? download a name color app that’ll give you a hex code for any color you want to use. then, you can type in that hex code for when you’re choosing a color for your tumblr bio

wondering how to make your header image small like mine? just choose a photo for your header and turn off the stretch image option

want to use a different text color that tumblr doesn’t offer? it’s not as complicated as you think. you’ll have to go on a desktop to do this and do some html (but trust me, it’s not very difficult). look up “HTML noob but trying my best - how to use colored text on desktop”

^^ i don’t have the link for the color text tutorial so you can try looking it up

how to make an aesthetic navi and masterlist

step 1: decide a theme! if you’re stuck, think about a character + color/season/mood or look up “[insert] aesthetic” to find some inspiration. or you can try looking at other blogs too

step 2: find a color scheme! it’s easier if you choose fewer colors. if you want to use the same color for both divider and text, download a color name app in order to get the hex code of that color.

step 3: add categories to your navi! most navigation pages include a link to masterlist, about/byi, and rules. your navi should have a title that indicates that it’s... a navigation page. you can add thin colored dividers with the same color to make it easier for followers to navigate

step 4: you can choose to create a ‘cover’ or a picture for your navigation and masterlist! again, i recommend you use the canva app as a starting point

extra: search up emoticon symbols to spice up your titles!

you’re not obligated to do any of these things. i’ve noticed that we tend to build pressure on ourselves when it comes to content and interaction. remember, this !! is !! for !! fun !! when you realize that it’s no longer fun, then know that it’s time to take a break. and there’s nothing wrong with a bit of self care.

((so i was gonna open up my askbox again but I got distracted doing this and watching streams i think idr what i did the past few hours, buuut there's something I need to cover first, especially since there are so many new people around! Hello! Especially since so many of you are playing OCs/MCs.

Don't worry, it's a tip to hopefully help you along! It may get a little long, especially as I try and provide examples. . .but hopefully it'll help.

I'm gonna talk a lot about OCs but this applies to canon characters too a bit. It certainly helps.

Tl;dr, you should have a character profile page.

(also remember that tumblr mobile doesn't really have direct access to Pages made with the Pages function on desktop, so you'll have to link them manually in your pinned or description or host them on another site(I used Google Docs in the apst) or in a regular post(this makes it very easy to lose as a forewarning) for maximum accessibility!)

(rules pages are also really really handy if you have alot of resteictions.)

So, in general, OCs have a bit of a lower reception rate in rp. Idk if that'll be the case here with MCs because they're, well, the main character. Housamo is also a series that lends itself well to OCs pretty well, especially non-human ones, but I figured I'd warn for that.

BUT. That doesn't mean you shouldn't play an OC! It just means there are things you need to keep in mind!

Think of all of the OCs you've seen--you all seem to be fun and wonderful people, and your characters are surely interesting. But. . .if you don't tell anybody about them, nobody will know what's going on or where to start, which makes asking questions a little hard, right? That's easier to work around with MC characters--we've played the game, we know the story, we know the characters, so we can figure out questions fairly easily based on that alone and go from there.

But with other OCs, especially those that don't represent charactera from mythology or fiction like many other characters in housamo do, there's like. Nowhere to start. We may see a face or some dialogue, but otherwise we don't have a frame of reference.

That's where a profile comes in!

Azazel-mun, I don't want to share all of the info about my character at once!

What if I don't know everything about my OC yet and want to figure it out along thw way?

The profile doesn't have to be super detailed! At most it shoule include things like the character's name and age and probably things like their location, profession, grade in school or place of work, etc., and anything you'd notice on the surface like their apperance. It's never a bad thing to include a description of their personality too, or a small section about their history/background. Little things that even you should probably know, too.

You can also section your profile off a bit into things like "surface info," "meta info," "things you could easily figure out about them," etc. That way, no one can spoil themself. Making lists like this can help you think these things through if you haven't already as well.

Let's use Azazel, a character that you probably know already, as an example here. I don't have a profile set

Name: Azazel

Species: Fallen Angel; Capra Therian - an anthropomorphic Goat (?)

Gender(pronouns): Male(he/him)

Age: difficult to calculate; several thousand years old?

Apperance age: hard to say, he's not human. Adult.

Origins: banished from his home world of Eden, has been in the human world for several thousand years

Profession: Priest of dubious denomination, most likely Catholic or Protestant; teacher at Daikanyama Academy; de facto head of the Missionaries Non-Profit charity Organization; supervisor of the Aoyama Missionaries

Role & Rule: Watcher; Revelation - allows him to see anything within the territory of the Aoyama Missionaries and anywhere the pages of his Artifact see

Apperance: Azazel is a 5'10"(180cm) tall, anthropomorphic goat of ambiguous breed, with fawn fur all over his body and lighter fur on his head and around his neck. He has brown, riged horns which curve out and back. Though his eyes are often closed, when opened they're red. He always carried around a leather bound bible with an eye on the cover, and is never seen without several chains on his person, although only the one(s) around his neck can be seen unless he's undressed.

He wears a black priest's cassock with a maroon sash and a capelet of the same color, with the same eye as on his bible on the shoulders of the cape, and brown dress shoes. The front of the robe is always open to expose his bare chest and the chains beneath.

Personality: Azazel is kind and doting, very fitting of both a teacher and priest, although his openly flirtatious, lustful, and secretive nature causes others to distrust him. He doesn't mind this at all. He has a strong adoration for humans, and values love in all of its forms more than anything. He's a bit of a passive person, often being unmotivated but working hard regardless, and seems to prefer to watch others and the world go by, although he won't decline most invitations to take part in it. He is always aware of anything that happens within the extensive territory of the Missionaries, and seems to know and see just about everything about anyone he meets, from their surface to their soul. . . .

If you know Azazel, or take note of some of the wording or question marks, you'll note I didn't explain everything(although I may have shared more than you want to.) This is just a bare bones exampe of how I do my profiles--but it can get even more bare!

I'll do two this time, a more vague version of Azazel's, and another that obscures information all together, using the same or a similar format to the above.

Age: unquestionably an adult

Compare it to the one before--see how I've left even more things off or left things ambiguous while still sharing what's necessary or surface level? However, it's also not as engaging or as informative as the other one where I gave more information.

As someone who plays him, profiles like this aren't as helpful for me lol since he knows so much about everyone and everything, having a lot of details helps me play my character!

Now, as helpful as this is, this is also a character you probably know. So how about I do this with an OC? Normally I'm extremely detailed in my profiles and such, especially for OCs, sharing headcanons and ideas for relationships between characters. But, again, I'll try and show how you can show some info while leaving some up to people to ask about to later be filled in.

Personality: seemingly anxious, but curious and exploratative nonetheless. On the awkward side, but can still keep up with the Nyarls that accompany her. Gets into trouble when she gets ahead of herself in exploring and learning about the arcane, but her Rule allows her to disappear easily.

History: Has always been curious about magic and attempted to run through a Gate when they began to open up. Performed a summon and brought a certain transients to Tokyo and recieved her familiar and the magic to use her Rule as a result. Currently teaches at a college. She stumbled into a certain someone while attempting to explore time, and became a fan ever since.

That tells you a fair amount, doesn't it? Even for someone you don't know? It may even raise some questions that you could ask. At the same time, it doesn't tell you that much, and that can be as much of a hindrance for coming up with questions as saying too much can. It's really up to you what's too much and too little. Here's a more detailed version! Some things have been left vague or confusing in such a way that they could be filled in after being revealed through asks and play. That way, people are encouraged to/given ideas of what to ask--and you can still share things in the long run.

Apperance: A fidgety older woman wearing a labcoat and a witch's hat. She looks quite stressed and has trouble sitting still. Her ashy brown hair is thin and a little wavy, with some strands of gray. Although she often squints, she doesn't wear glasses. She carries around a lot of books relating to maths and sciences and one labeled 'Grimoire' decorated with arcane symbols from Gehenna and Old Ones. She's always accompanied by at least one Nyarlathotep and a very short, bearded man who can best be described as a brown rat therian with a human-like face. Sometimes there's a normal rat on her person or in her pockets.

Personality: Kezia is a fidgety and anxious magic practitioner. She's very curious about other worlds and has been since the Gates appeared in this Tokyo since she was a child, however she has been pursuing magic before then. She often appears somewhat confused about or fascenated by even her usual surroundings, but, at other times moves through the world with confidence even in unfamiliar territory. She also likes rats and other rodents, and as such will often avoid felines and birds of prey. She has a tendency to disappear, seeming to walk through walls despite assuredly being alive.

She's a little bit awkward with people, but somehow keeps up with Nyarlathoteps nonetheless. She's a good teacher, once she figures out how to explain things in ways others can understand easily, but can be a bit difficult to follow and flighty up until then. Aware of this, she's rather patient, if a little down on herself at times. However, she most often simply has her mind elsewhere. Despite this and the company she keeps, she's relatively sane. . .most of the time.

She shares a name with a witch from the world of Old Ones who made a pact with Nyarlathotep, believing him to be the Devil. . .and the ratman always at her side uses the same name as that witch's familiar as well. It's. . .probably just a coincidence. . .who would rightfully make a pact with Nyarlathotep?

History: Kezia is an adult human from this Tokyo before the apperance of the Gates and construction of the Walls. She's explored various witchcraft pursuits since she was a child, with what was originally a mere imaginative curiosity and fascination. After the arrival of the Gates when she was still young, she snuck over the fences built around one and attempted to go inside the massive pillar of light, which she attributes to the reason she often seems to struggle with her vision. Several years later, she performed a successful summon and she recieved her familiar, Brown Jenkin, transformed into a somewhat therian form from one of her pet rats, and was given some powers from Nyarlathotep. She has no discernable control over any of the chaotic creatures, however they seem to spend time around her regardless.

At present she's a professor of a subject that interests her at a certain college. She's had other dangerous run-ins due to her excitement over the arcane and "darker" arts, but doesn't seem to show any signs of stopping. However, after an incident in an attempt to explore time itself, she encountered a certain guardian of time and feels reluctant for once to explore it further. . .although she's become quite a big fan of his.

. . .i ran out of steam amd kinda lost track of where i was going. idk if that helped at all really. But maybe it did! I hope it did. You don't need to use any of those things exactly by any means, but that's the kind of thing you usually see in profile pages. Basics like someone's name and birthday and age and apperance and a little about their personality, maybe some history. Oftentimes things like powers and weapons and the like. Interests, hobbies, ways they could be intereacted with, etc. Just stuff that'd help you know the character.

I write everything in paragraph form, but everyone is more than welcome to use a more script format. I love making profiles, myself--it really helps to think about the character and details about them. Normally I make really, really detailed profiles, but maybe I'll try and be more simple about it this time around. depends on how i'm feeling.

I know this seems weirdly hypocritical given I don't have one but when I first made this blog there were like four of us including myself. I didn't see the need for a rules or profile page because I didn't anticipate that there'd be so many of us or, like, people from other fandoms or who aren't familiar with certain characters. I'll rectify that soon hopefully. But I figured I'd pass along this idea/knowledge to others.

re: your Tumblr formatting post, i am seeing the paragraph breaks on mobile, so I'm not sure why they might not be showing up for you. generally I've found it's best to avoid the html and try to get it to look right in tumblr's post editor so it looks normal on the dashboard, and then change your blog theme code if things are wonky there

Most of them DO show up on mobile, because I've explicitly made the HTML look like that! It's only a few of my very oldest posts that don't have that. I'm doing it in this reply, where the spaces between paragraphs - at least on my timeline - don't show up properly.

I can get around this by explicitly modifying the HTML (and there's another way that involves holding shift while pressing enter, which has other funky formatting consequences), but...

The problem with being explicit with HTML is that when you navigate to my blog itself - at least on desktop - shit gets fuckin weird.

The formatting - bold, italics - has been shifted over by 2 characters. It's probably some weird HTML stuff to do with how I like to add extra line breaks between paragraphs.

Anyways yeah tumblr's formatting is a bizarre mess. The post editor plain doesn't work a lot of the time. Here's a recent post with a glaring mistake that haunts me to this day:

There shouldn't be a line break here, but there is. It does not matter what I do in post editor. I've changed it several times in post editor. The drafts/actual post never reflects the changes.

What's really fucking bizarre is that for this particular post, the line break issue appears both on my timeline, and on my blog itself, but the weird as shit bold/italics shift only happens on my blog.

Anyways idk bro it's just a hot mess. I don't remotely have the patience to deal with "theme codes" because I don't want to make it a pain for people to navigate my blog.

Although I suppose the search function on blogs doesn't seem to actually work on tumblr anyways so there is that going on XD

1. why did you choose your url? When I first got tumblr, I didn’t know what I was doing. Most of my usernames that I’ve used over the years had my name in them, and I didn’t want it associated with my name. A few of the other ones I tried were taken, so then I decided to base it off a quote I really liked by F. Scott Fitzgerald - “They slipped briskly into an intimacy from which they never recovered.” which then became, illneverrecover.

This isn’t particularly a “me and natsuki” song so much as a “this seems to capture some of the way I experience love and also the world” song but. I wanted to put it here and some thinky thoughts bc it’s late and I feel like pontificating I guess. Properties/fandoms/people I mention but do not want to draw the attention of have been censored, if you can’t figure out what they are and really want to know feel free to message me.  

Cw: exploration of like. The inevitability of death, and change, and facing the vast universe. Tl;dr this song is macabre and its speaker knows that wishing for things to stay as they are is in vain, but does it anyway. That fuckin gets me bro.

Ideally the read more will work. I apologize if it doesn’t. I’m on mobile and not sure that tumblr will let me edit posts on desktop that I started on mobile. I literally copy and pasted this freaking post onto desktop so it would have a read more bc no one fucking deserves to scroll through my late night mile long thoroughly existential ramblings. At least I’m posting this fuck off late at night so hopefully it won’t bother anyone

The simple instrumentation, first off. It’s p much the same…one? Two? Maybe three measures? Repeated throughout the song, but I think it works very well with the themes and meaning and doesn’t annoy me like other acoustic-style music with so much repetition (*cough* M*mf*rd and S*ns *cough*). This is partially I think bc there’s changes in the notes etc between different parts of the song; the measure of silence between the intro and the first main stanza of the song, the change in. I think it’s key? Over the course of repeating the chorus. (It’s been so long since I’ve done music, stanza isn’t the right word and key probably isn’t either hELP)

But the main thing that seems to get me: the lyrics.

“How lucky / I ever was to see / The way that / You smiled at me / Your little moon face / Shining bright at me / One day soon, there’ll be nothing left of you and me / Two coffins for sleep” (I may have put too many line breaks in there lol but that’s how it Feels so I’m keeping it)

There’s this constant awareness of the inevitability of loss (specifically death in this case), and how. Mm, how to put it. The randomness of the universe can so often work against us, and being aware of that makes you incredibly thankful for the times when things do go in your favor. Very similar vibes to TWRP’s Life Party, though definitely more macabre in tone.

Going back to the first stanza in the song:

“Two coffins for sleep / One for you, one for me / We’ll get there eventually / In the dark of our graves, our bodies will decay / I wish you’d never change”

Something I find interesting about this portion is that, despite ending with “I wish you’d never change,” acknowledging that this change, death, is inevitable, there’s still this. Hope? I guess might be the right word? Or maybe faith. That the speaker and the person addressed in the song will be together in death. They will be in separate coffins, but “we’ll” get there; “in the dark of our graves, our bodies will decay. Plural. They may be separated physically but they are undergoing the same process, and perhaps there is some measure of togetherness in that. It may just be economical phrasing to fit the rhythm of the song, but it still implies a togetherness to me. It could have been phrased "I’ll get there and you’ll get there,” “in the dark of the graves, our bodies,” or similar. Again, that probably wouldn’t work with the rhythm and there is probably not an inherent meaning to it, but still! I was an English major, reading more into things that aren’t necessarily there is like My Job lol.

Anyway, before I got sidetracked by that thought I was going to say that the main point of this portion of the song is this sort of impossible wish for the speaker and the person addressed to not be separated. Yes, this is inevitable, yes, there is no fighting it, but…wouldn’t it be nice? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a small kindness from the universe like that, to not be separated in the end. It won’t happen, but let’s take a moment to imagine it anyway.

Another side note, this is kind of a similar thought process to why I like the way st*vens *niverses handles its villains. Yes, talking and emotional connection with those you’re in conflict with doesn’t always work. But isn’t it nice to imagine a world where it does? And if we do imagine that, maybe we can find a few ways to be more compassionate in our world, to extend grace and kindness where we might not have thought to otherwise. And perhaps that will make the world just a tiny bit better.

Anyway. Moving forward:

“All the things that I have yet to lose will someday be gone too / Back into annihilation / All things will fade, maybe it’s better off that way / I wish you’d stay with me”

First off, the phrasing “back into annihilation.” We come from nothingness, we will return to nothingness. This is not a religious song. There is not an afterlife waiting for us, nothing that created us. There is the life we have, here and now, and then it’s gone.

Otherwise, this stanza continues the overall theme: we inevitably march on towards death, and separation. We will lose all that we have. Perhaps that is good, ultimately; would it truly make you happy in the long run to never experience pain or loss? This is a sentiment that I’m sure has been expressed many times by many people, but that I remember first hearing from st*r tr*k, though I cannot currently find a clip of the moment I’m thinking of. Not that human life is inherently bad or painful, but that pain is a necessary part of life to balance the good. If there was not pain of some kind in your life, you would not appreciate your happiness so much. Obviously, this line of thinking only goes so far; it is not, for example, a good thing that marginalized people tend to experience outsized pain in comparison with the nice things they receive from society. Happiness for marginalized people is more often forged and seized, stolen from life rather than given freely by it. No, poverty does not “make you appreciate the virtues of life” more, it makes you hungry and tired and frustrated, can you please just take some action against it. Conversely, j*ff b*z*s could probably use a bit more pain in his life! ….I got sidetracked again. Wish tumblr had a footnotes feature. Anyway. The speaker acknowledges the inevitability of death/loss, but once again expresses that vain wish to not lose the person addressed in the song, to keep what they have in this moment. Once again, this will never happen. Let’s imagine it anyway. Perhaps it will be a comfort, despite its improbability.

After this, the chorus is repeated, eventually shifting into a repetition of the phrase “Two coffins for sleep,” finishing the song. To return to the instrumentation, the guitar and drums follow a consistent, simple rhythm, mimicking that of walking. Constantly moving forward, even when we don’t want to. We will die, eventually, “one day soon,” far off and yet much closer than we hope or want. Change is inevitable. Death is inevitable.

And yet. That small, vain hope remains. “I wish you’d stay with me.” “I wish you’d never change.” Maybe, in a kinder world, we could keep this moment as more than a memory. “How lucky / I ever was to see / The way that / You smiled at me.” In all the cold randomness of the universe, against all improbability, we did meet. We brought each other joy. “Your little moon face / Shining bright at me.” We reflect the good, the kindness in each other. “One day soon, there’ll be nothing left of you and me.” And yet. And yet. “Two coffins for sleep / Two coffins for sleep.” Separated, and yet together, even if it’s just an illusion.

To explain why this means so much to me….I’m not sure I can do it succinctly lol. But hey, this post is a mile long already, so why not. No one’s obligated to read this lol.

When I was younger I was more religious. (This is not a “religion/spirituality is a childish thing and I have put that behind me” point, don’t worry.) When I was a teenager I was an atheist for like. Edgy points, idk. I was starting to see some of the worse parts of the world, starting to wonder what gods who truly cared about the world would let it get so horrid for so many. I’m still fairly young (mid-20s is not old, I must keep reminding myself), but now my view is…somewhere in the middle of those two points. Or maybe it’s more that I took a left turn?

The point is, now I kind of don’t care whether there is a god/are gods, whatever. You know how when you’re a kid (barring abusive circumstances that break this illusion much earlier etc) you believe that your parents know everything? They can fix anything, they’re your parents! They’re your whole world! And then you get older, and you realize that no. They don’t know everything. They were your whole world, perhaps, but there’s literally billions more people in the world. People that you can connect to, learn from, build things together with. The world is so much more than you and your parents. That’s the stage I’m at with my belief in a higher power. Sure, they might be out there. But they’re just one being, how could they possibly understand and control everything in this fuck off complicated world of ours? Or, if you’re going the polytheistic route, they’re just as complicated as the rest of the world. Chances are, appeasing one would anger another. One step forward, two steps back. (I should make it explicit if it wasn’t already clear, I come from a Xtian background. I default to thinking of god in the singular. Not sure how well this point holds up from a polytheistic perspective tbh!)

Anyway. It does not matter whether there is a higher power. There is more to the world than that. We are here. We have each other.

There’s a moment in night in the woods that hit me like a truck. Angus says, “so I believe in a universe that doesn’t care, and people who do.” I have essentially taken four times as many words to express that same sentiment! But like. That’s it. It doesn’t matter whether there’s a higher power. If they can fix the world, they haven’t, and if they can’t, then they can’t. We can, piece by piece. Moment by moment.

The thing about this. Is that humans. Are not, by nature, necessarily good. “People are fundamentally people,” as TPratchett and NGaiman put it. The world is infinitely complicated, and on top of that we as individual humans are infinitely complex. We do not, by default, seek out and work towards the good of others. (We do not inherently seek out hurting others either! Get that original sin shit out of here!) But like. If there isn’t a higher power that’s going to just fix our shit for us? If we’re all we’ve got?

And thus. Finally. The reason this song speaks to me. Oh my lord is it existentially horrifying to think that it comes down to silly, insignificant, flawed humans to change the world. You have to find something to give you joy. Or at least a moment of less pain. The world is so vast, and we can do so little.

But we have each other. In this vast, empty universe, I have you, and you have me. And perhaps, to soothe our fears and make things just a little easier on ourselves, we can pretend that the world will be kind. Wouldn’t it be nice? If things were kinder. Let’s take a moment to imagine it. There, that’s a nice thought, isn’t it? The world will not be kind. But for a moment, we can pretend it will.

Perhaps, if we are very lucky, we can even take a small step towards that kinder world.

Wouldn’t that be nice?

What a daily/ask blog needs

I’ve been in the ask blog communtiy for a sUUPER long time. like idk 4/5 years? So I feel like I can pass some knowledge onto you guys.  Gosh this got so long, there’s only 4 chapters but it’s picture/text heavy;;

1. A readable blog.

by Readable I mean things like colors and text size! What’s good for you just might not be good enough for someone to comprehend whats being said on your blog.

Pick A good text size. something around 20 px that people can read! It’s been known to give people headaches if they have to read something super small, and not everyone can zoom in to read your blogs! 

When choosing text colors PLEASE consider if the background color and the background color clash.

Example, which one do you prefer to read? which one is easier on your eyes?

Alright, and which one now?

You see the one where the color values of the background and the text are very similar it becomes harder and harder to see.

see?   Choose your colors wisely. Get some feedback from a friend if colors aren’t your thing.

2. A basic theme.

this topic isn’t very mobile friendly. Sorry Mobile users! You’ll have to go get a desktop computer for this!

Who doesn’t love nice themes? Themes are great! They help you change up your blog the way you want it (restrictions can be applied, but nothing is impossible if you know some CSS!) There are theme hunter blogs so you don’t have to use tumblr recommended shit themes. 

Redux is a simple theme made by tumblr (probably the only good one they did in my own personal opinion), with a HECK ton of edits made from it.  Redux is like a less baby safe version of the default theme we get.

and I’ll show you how to do basic stuff this chapter, so I’ll convert my dead as heck inspo blog into an example for you guys!

Thats great and all but how do I get the links to show on my main page?

Now click update preview and click press save! and check out your blog!

Neat huh! Now you can make TONS of pages!! (just don’t clutter your blog up with them!)

3. Turn your askbutton on.

I know I know everyone knows about the ask button, who doesn’t!

Some people don’t! and totally forget.

You can find your ask button under your settings page button

Click that! now what we’re interested in is your blogs.

And with that, Asks are now available on your blog!! You can change the title in the settings page, but that’s it.

If you really want to go crazy with the customizing, you’ll have to the the code for your askbox, post it in the HTML of a new page, and have fun!

4. General advise

General advise?

Blogging

Don’t reblog/post things not relevant to your blog. If it has stuff to do with you, the mod, sURE! like “I’m in the final week school grind” “getting kicked out need commissions please” or “Nan died need time off” or something, sure!

But don’t turn your blog into one of those reblog blogs that reblogs funny gifs or conspiracy theories about Full Metal Alchemist. If you need to do that, make a personal blog where you CAN reblog those! because I know if I see people reblogging irrelevant long posts, I unfollow. It clutters my dash from seeing things I want to see!!

Research

Research is your friend. Do research. absorb the knowledge. If your character’s second language is English, learn how people with their second language being English talk!!

 “Moi name iz Izzabelle, thiz baguette is, as you say, magnifique!!”

 This is a bad bad thing. Don’t do the above. I’ve been guilty of the above. (not calling anyone out, my best friend whose french is called Isabelle) 

As someone with a LOT of a friends who use English as a second/third language, they don’t do this at all. They do their best to clearly communicate, sometimes things are muddled and aren’t quite right and their English may not make sense. it’s not perfect English with flares of french through out the sentence.

I know the appeal to get across that accent may be irresistible.  We want to have some sort of exotic flare to a character, but please understand that actual people don’t speak like that. 

Make sure your character is comprehendable and you’re not alienating your audience.

E.G “ G-G-G-go-gosh g-g-g-go-go-goll-golly m-m-m-mi-miss mo-m-m-mo-molly I-I-I th-th-thin-think we-we’re l-l-l-lo-lo-lost.” 

the above is hard to read. Instead try the below.

Peevis was scared, his voice shook and every word was laced with fear. “Gosh golly Miss Molly, I think we’re lost.” Peevis stuttered to his companion.

Easier to read! 

Roleplay etiquette

Talk to your RP partner. Don’t control their character without their approval. TALK TO YOUR RP PARTNER... Ask them what they’re ok and not ok with! (punching their character, kissing their character, ect.)

TALK TO YOUR ROLEPLAY PARTNER

Don’t jump into a dedicated rp without asking the mods roleplaying. this could be considered rude!  Anything not serious and meme like, sure! Know the mod’s boundaries though. 

Example of what not to do:

 I answered an ask years ago, and when I woke up I found the post had over 70 notes and I felt great! then I realized it’s from the same four people reblogging my post roleplaying on it and controlling my character without my permission. this is real btw it actually happened to me.

what you should do:

start your own thread. keep it trimmed for your followers or start a new post to keep the dashboards clean incase you don’t have xkit.

idk about everyone else, but i can summarize the basics of getting yourself out there simply. you just need to remember the 3 t's: theme, tagging, and timing.

(also im not saying you HAVE to follow this to get big, this is just what's worked for me)

theme

make sure your mobile tumblr/dashboard view theme are in easy to look at colors. if people are struggling to read it, or it's too dark, they will click away. you don't need a pastel/minimalist color scheme, but you do need readable.

match your background and accent colors to your header and icon. there are websites you can upload the image too that will tell you what the color composition is! make use of that! if you're struggling just do what i do: no visible header or icon, which totally eliminates the problem.

remember that your theme is the first impression people get when they click to view your blog, so whether it's on mobile or desktop it needs to look good. think about how you react when you view other people's blogs. what patterns do you see in big names or just blogs you enjoy? what elements give you an impression the blogger knows what their doing? what elements make you think they don't? reflect on this!!

another thing to keep in mind is to what audience you're catering towards and have that show in your url, icon, and blog title. for example, i have a vld centric url (a lot of them actually so if you're struggling to find one, dm me...) and a vld icon, at one glance you know what my blog is generally about. you don't have to change you're url, i used to be 'ilovechickensofttacos' for the longest time (i still have the url and i intend to use it again once my hyperfixation for vld fades), but having a centric url and icon can really help!

as far as desktop goes, you want something that showcases who you are yet is easy to navigate and look at. for example, i LOVE my theme from cactusthemes because im a huge fan of adventure and space, and this theme is easy to look at and actually fun to interact with! if you need help finding a theme i highly reccomend the following theme makers: @cactusthemes @enchantedthemes @magnusthemes @glenthemes @baechys @espoirthemes @felinum and @yukoki!!! also @theme-hunter is a good resource and of course i'm always up for helping others!

make sure you have an about page!!! one that details who you are and what your blog is about. a blog desc only goes so far.

make sure you choose a theme with links that you can plug your content into, like how my theme has a link to my ao3 and my icons page

tagging

first of all, if you're serious about being seen you need to make regular posts frequently. reblogging content doesn't put you out there, original posts do, and how people see those posts is through tagging so it's super important to put a lot of thought into how you tag!

keep the tags on your post relevent and concise. only people following one or more the first five tags of a post will have your post show up on their dash, so tag wisely! that's why i generally push the ship and character tags up to the front and put my personal tags (such as #jules shitposts) last.

if you tag too many things your post won't show up in any search at all. i forget what the magic number is, i want to say 20 or 30, but i really don't know. i try not to clutter up the tags, sometimes less is more.

look at the tags on popular posts (you can do that by clicking source on the post), particularly ones in the fandom/community you're aiming to build in. note the most common tags usually tend to be character and ship tags. i tend to tag first name, full name, and then vld name and name vld (so keith, keith kogane, vld keith, keith vld) to catch those following those specific tags. feel free to look through my shitpost tag (#jules shitposts) to see what i use!!

use network tags! if your community has any networks (vld-networks, positivevoltron, vlddaily) they generally follow those tags and are happy to reblog your content if you tag them.

don't. fucking. cross tag. not only are you an asshole, but you look like a dumbass!! people go into tags for a reason, and it's not to see something that doesn't even have those characters in it! think of it like this: when i go into the hunk tag im looking for h/unk, not l/ance. i love him, but if im trying to find h/unk content it's frustrating to only see another ship or character and eventually... i'm just going to blacklist the cross tagged stuff and i won't even see your post let alone give you notes, and if you're a repeat offender i'll actually block you. that's the opposite of what you want. so, if that ship or character isn't portrayed, don't tag it!

keep in mind that a lot of people have sh/eith and/or k/ance blocked, so don't tag a k/ance post as sh/eith or vice versa (and the same goes for pretty much any and all ships). you're not broadening you audience, you're pissing everyone off.

do not. put character or ship hate. in. the. character. or. ship. tags. i've always been big on people's right to vent about a character or ship on their blogs (i personally find it to be distasteful, but hey man, it's your blog, as long as it is tagged properly i don't give a fuck), but i have no sympathy with people who put that in the main tags. just tag it as 'antix' and be on your merry way. otherwise... i have a trigger happy block glock for hate cross taggers... and i know im not the only one.

develop a tagging system on your blog! im SHIT at tagging, so i don't tag like every character or ship (except on request!) but im very sure to tag my asks (i use jules asks, except i can't tag them rn bc i don't have my laptop) and my original content all has tags for easy navigation! jules writes and jules shitposts are two easy ones. they make finding my content easy peasy lemon squeezy.

also, tag your vent posts and discourse. i respect people's right to salt as they please but not everyone wants to see it.

timing

timing is EVERYTHING for posting. you want your posts to be out when the most people are on their dash. this might mean watching your activity page to figure out what your peak time is (for me it's between 8 and 9:15 pm EST and usually after 10 pm it's dead lmao) and take note of other active times.

if you cant be on, schedule your original posts to be rolled out during those times, or self reblog them then!

get a queue together based on your needs. i post soooooo much that i only have my queue run once a day. the rest of the time i just build it up so it's ready to go when i have to leave for a trip. if i know i wont be posting at all for a day or two i set it to 20 times a day.

time your self reblogs. i usually do a morning rb, noon rb, evening rb, and next day rb. it usually gets all the timezones in. oh also tag them as self rb so people can filter them out if they like.

i think that's like... kinda it. i'll put some general advice down here though!

make sure your followers have a name to call you by and list it in your about and blog desc! you'd be surprised how many people don't and idk maybe it's just me but it always feels impersonal?? so please!! tell me your name so i can talk to you!!

play ask games! it's an easy way to open up yourself to your followers. and don't just rb them, ask questions too!! i've recently made it a habit to try and ask people something every time i rb a game from them. im usually on anon tho!! sometimes i'll be public if i know them really well. you don't even need an ask game to ask questions though! keep that in mind!

unless you've got something important to say, try to keep your comments in the replies section, and avoid adding them in a reblog. put them in the tags!! i know i dont mind getting comments on reblogs, but i know some people do :// but you can put whatever you like on my stuff!! i love hearing what you have to say!

talk to your followers!!! let them know how your day was!! we care about you!!

if you need a promo... i know i'm always down to lift up youbger or newer creators! not everyone is open to promos but i almost always am, and i don't bite at all

develop a personality or perish. what i mean is figure out ways to express yourself so that people can get a good glimpse of what you're really like! try to be honest, don't hide your feelings. nobody is going to judge you for being 'too enthusiastic' and if they do they probably don't have much of a personality themselves! so don't be afraid to be yourself. it'll all come out eventually, trust me.

make!! original!! content!! even if you don't think it's good, even if you don't think it's funny, post it. post your fan art, your edits, your fics. post your silly hcs and sad theories. post stupid things you'd think the characters do on vacation. make it a goal to put SONETHING out there regularly, that way you're always being seen.

ACCEPT COMPLIMENTS DAMNIT!! when people tell you a good thing, don't voice doubt! this will help you develop confidence, i swear.

1. Why did you choose your url?

Formula 1 + Kayla = formulakay. I’ve considered changing it and have a few good urls saved but I feel like this is my brand now so I’ll likely stick with it!

Probably 13 years now? At least? I’ve been through the following fandoms: Supernatural -> NCIS -> Hunger Games (Josh Hutcherson) (spent A Lot of time here) -> WWE -> was an ~aesthetic~ blog for a while -> back to Supernatural -> hockey (also spent A Lot of time here) -> F1. I did most of that on one blog but started from scratch with this blog.

4. Do you have a queue tag?

Not yet, but I don’t queue things often enough to have one. I like posts to go back and tag/draft to post later most of the time. Unless I schedule a post (like a fic dropping), if I’m posting, I’m here!

5. Why did you start your blog in the first place?

This blog started because my sister @allgood-allways influenced me - I had been working in marketing for a couple years and when she got into F1 she said it could be a fun creative outlet that wasn’t my job.

Before, I think I had joined because it was the edgy, “cool” social media to use? Not many people that I knew irl had one and I liked it for that.

6. Why did you choose your icon/pfp?

George is one of my favorite drivers and I think the picture is goofy and cute.

7. Why did you choose your header?

On desktop, I’ve got a few different images on my theme - I’ve got an icon of Toto on the phone which is an outright reference to my ongoing fic series Texts with Toto and then I have the main header which is the Williams FW43B, and my sidebar pic is another one of George! Is is obvious who I support each race weekend yet?

On mobile, my header is a gif I made as a part of an edit set!

8. What’s your post with the most notes?

Way more than I should. I work from home right now and we’re in a very slow period, so it’s near constant during the day.

Not that I’m aware of. I really try to stay out of drama - it doesn’t do great things for my anxiety so I just keep my mouth shut. I am, however, blocked by a few people I’ve never interacted with, which is interesting! (I block back 🤷🏻‍♀️)

15. How do you feel about the ‘you need to reblog’ posts?

As someone who creates content (edits, gifsets, fic), I’m enraged constantly by the like-to-reblog ratio on my own posts and on the posts of other creators in this community it’s. That’s not to mention the fad of saving/reposting/sharing without credit that a lot of people do (this will also get you blocked btw!) both here and on other social sites. If I make something and it doesn’t get notes, that’s fine, but if it gets a ton of likes and no reblogs, it’s incredibly discouraging. Reblogging is the only way to spread content - liking literally does nothing. I’ve seen people stop creating because of it - cause what’s the point? Yeah, the appreciation of getting a like is nice, but if you don’t enjoy something enough to share it with your followers, just don’t interact with it at all. I hate the ~aesthetic~ vibes that so many blogs tend to stick to - I can guarantee you that the percent of your followers that actually look at your blog as a whole is very, very low. We see what’s on our dashes for a very short period of time- if you don’t reblog it, and your followers don’t reblog it from you, people don’t see it. I want content creators to be selfish and reblog their work over and over again, to continue exposing their followers to it, especially if no one else is sharing it for them. They deserve the recognition and attention.

16. Do you like tag games?

I love them! I have some incredible friends that always tag me in them and I am so appreciative (like, someone Thought Of Me! I was On Their Mind!) each time it happens. Plus, I’m not a very openly ~sharing~ person most of the time so it’s nice to have an opportunity to do so that doesn’t feel awkward or forced.

17. Do you like ask games?

I love ask games too but I always end up feeling guilty for clogging my followers’ dashes with answers - I think that guilt of over-sharing is something I need to work on! It’s my blog and I can post what I want to!

18. Which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?

I have mutuals that have a ton of followers and mutuals that don’t have many - I myself am definitely not tumblr famous so who am I to judge.

19. Do you have a crush on a mutual?

I have a lot of friend-crushes on mutuals - mutuals that I seriously would love to be friends with but I’m too shy/feel too annoying to reach out.

I think it can be hard sometimes on tumblr too to approach people that already seem to have a close-knit group of friends. It’s like wandering over to the popular table at lunch in the hopes that they won’t turn you away.

Why did you choose your url? the short story is hes my favourite driver. the long(er) story is that i saved this somewhere during the summer of 2019 but didnt have it in use yet and then in september dasha and i decided to change to junior series urls for various reasons and a lot of people changed along with us djgjs
