And then we have the worst unit from the jugdral set, Ayra who somehow ends up with a backpack mercie. No Aidean and Mercie (who might talk about their kid siblings ! Or how they have faith they will reunite with a long lost one), no ethlyn, no Lex who feels out of place, no.

I could have bought a teatime jugdral banner if it has characters from Granvalle or leonster (butler Finn ?) or Augustria, but no.

Despite what the game sold as Isaach's culture, we have... Fucking Ayra.

With a fucking prf Astra (why is even the source material ?) who most likely blows both of her nephews out of water, despite gameplay and lore dicting they should fold her with their pinky because they are the ones with the magic blood (and don't get me started on that shit of a FB between where A!Mareeta supposedly struggles against her as they train because, uh, if A!Mareeta is the endgame (after both games ?) Mareeta, her major Od blood kicked in and she can, just like her dad and Shanan, fold her).

But nooo, I guess tall'n'dark hair'n'broody swordswoman sells, so let's give her another Astra (uwu Supreme Astra) and call it a day.

This sucks and it pisses me so much that this is most likely the only seasonal Fe4 banner we will have, when the other two (dance + scions) was better designed.

Fodlan wise, Lorenz was yeeted away bcs he isn't a cute girl and apparently that's the only important criteria for GD representation and lysithea really needed that fourth alt I guess, Mercie is here bcs it's totally to have the three houses represented (since she can't have meaningful dialogue with Ayra) and Ferdie is welcome.

Even if the Fe16 spam kinds of piss me off, it could have been a full jugdral banner but given their track record, in a full jugdral banner we would have gotten Larcei to make "funny shenanigans with her mom".

Calling it, if this Astra can be foddered, I'm feeding her to Galzus.

...Granted that he actually received twelve fewer votes this year, but everyone's saying that turnout was unusually low this time so that's to be expected.

As for whether this will actually mean anything, let's take a look at how Diarmuid measured up to the other Jugdral characters who aren't currently in Heroes.

still kinda stunned by the no-fe4-remake thing, genuinely thought feh was all but telling us that, very funny in hindsight that there was a minor focus on jugdral and THEN a jugdral banner and we were all like "THIS CONFIRMS IT, THE DIRECT IS COMING UP, THE STARS HAVE ALIGNED!" and then team feh was like uh no...the...the banner WAS the thing we were hyping up.

Me personally I'd still love just straight up ports of all the old games, I played Blazing Blade on the switch and it was amazing, I'd love to have that for all the other games.

But anyway, meanwhile...been absolutely BLASTING through a Path of Radiance playthrough, and loving it. 8) I feel like I'm not making fewer mistakes than last time, I'm just better at restrategizing and recovering, and my units are all WAY better bcs I'm divvying exp way better, combo of trimming units I know I won't use and being more willing to send my favs into danger to level up.

I only JUST tapped into bonus exp to get Mist and Rhys promoted, since healers level up so slowly they won't be missing out on weapon levels and I want Mist to be ready for the Black Knight fight. (And yes it's redundant to have Rhys at this point esp since Soren can also heal now but. Here's the thing. I like Rhys. And I will absolutely play with my favorite characters even if it puts me at a disadvantage bcs it's just another thing to strategize around. And that's fun! :D)

So yeah the Black Knight...I'm like two chapters away from that. Last time there was no way in hell I was beating him, but this time I'll do it if it kills me. I'll get Ike kitted out with whatever abilities are best, and since Mist can canto (I completely didn't use her my first playthrough so no I hadn't promoted her) that'll help a lot...well. we'll see. I just...I just really want to use Nasir, ok?? I hate missing out on units and I've never gotten to use him. So we're winning the Black Knight fight specifically to rescue Nasir.

oh yeah I'm playing on "normal" mode...last time I was playing the Japanese version and I played the easiest mode available, but think that's the same as the the normal mode for the localized version in the US? not sure.

Duo Leif and Seliph, really? Then what the next harmonic heroes they're going to pull Bartre and Fir?? I have a personal bias against F!Lewyn, so seeing Julia share a similar-ish outfit sucks so much. I hate it.

And again, Larcei with another regnal!Astra, bcs fuck Fe5 and fuck Mareeta, I guess.

At least Nanna on a pegasi is cute, but tfw the only Fe5 peeps are... Persons who appear in Fe4.

They already did something like this with Altina and Sanaki. They are more than willing to do it again, and personally I don't mind it so much. I like the idea of fun interactions between characters from different games who didn't get much between them. Any Harmonic with Bartre and his family would be an instant sell for me, anyway.

I am also pissed about Lewyn. Just generally, but also with the outfit choice. Julia looks fine, but I'm not a huge fan of it, and her kit is just bad, so I guess this is a safe skip. I do think Larcei kinda deserved this one though. Mareeta has two alts, while Larcei only had base form, so I'm not mad at Larcei really. I just...really had my hopes up on this being a Thracia banner, you know? The datamine showed Thracia was going to be the Harmonic focused game, and for a brief moment I expected Thracia alts. But it's all Genealogy. Even the Thracia units are Genealogy. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. They gave Thracia a whole New Heroes banner, and an entire seasonal alt that was free. They're spent for the year, they need a break to make more Three Houses alts.

Also my personal gripe with Nanna? These characters are supposed to be dressing up in honor of their ancestors, and Nanna's is the swordsman. And she has a staff. It sure is a shame that Nanna doesn't have any iconic sword tied to her character that could've been used for this alt. Not like we have a really limited pool of sword fliers too, so she'd still be really good in that class. No, just a generic staff that's just Eir's C-skill I guess. *sigh*

A bit early, but here are my thoughts on who should win CYL6, because what's more fun than poking a hornet's nest? (I don't really care who gets first and who gets second, just which four get the top spots)

Now you could say that I'll say Chrom should be one of the two men's division winners because I'm biased, and you'd be correct, but honestly, at this point he's probably the most popular remaining lord and Awakening will be turning 10, plus I mean come on, this guy has been a consistent high scorer (I mean, he scored higher than the winner of the female division last year, IS could have just put him in a dress and thrown him on the CYL banner).

Design wise, I'm thinking he could be based on this old bit of concept art for his great lord appearance (given that Exalted Chrom already kinda looks a bit like his final great lord appearance, so going with his actual great lord getup would probably be a bit too similar). He could be a lance cavalier, since l!Chrom references one of his reclass options being the Archer class, and well, his other reclass option is Cavalier.

For the other men's division winner, I think Seliph is a pretty safe pick. Between the remaining lords, it's him Sigurd or Leif, and I'll be honest. I haven't played FE4 or FE5, so I have absolutely no opinion on that matter, but Seliph has had a tendency to score higher than the other two on CYL, so I'll trust the other fans. Given my lack of knowledge on the subject, I can't comment on design.

Now, with two safe non controversial picks for the men's division, it's time for jimmy rustling as I go heavily into opinion territory for the women's division. The addition of brave Eirika kinda exhausted the female lord pool, so that leaves... well central characters and fan favorites.

That and the femc's, f!Kris, f!Robin, f!Corrin and f!Byleth all exist, and heck one of those is actually a lord... and arguably the canonical version of the character. The only real reason I see that f!Corrin shouldn't win is that she's already kinda being favored over the male variant (being a legendary hero and all), but I'm not really opposed towards the idea. The only issue is that I have absolutely no idea what she'd be designed to look like (maybe one of the DLC classes, to avoid a choice between a clearly Nohrian and a clearly Hoshidan design?). Still, I think that from the pool of female characters, Corrin is probably the best pick, since as opposed to a lot of other high scoring characters, she's actually important, and I am personally not a fan of f!Byleth (she would be another arguably good winner, but my personal bias says no).

After that controversial pick, let's get even more controversial. Rhea/Seiros. One of the main antagonists of Three Houses. Enter her as a counterpart to Edelgard von Hresvelg. Perhaps as a sword infantry to reference the battle against Nemesis during the opening animation? I at least would feel a bit disappointed if she's just a dragon... again (isn't l!Seiros being a dragon infantry also kind of a spoiler?) Her outfit could simply be her archbishop getup, but perhaps a bit more interresting would be the mural of saint Seiros.

Anyways, those are just my opinions and I definitely know that my picks for the women's division won't be winning (especially seeing as I'll be throwing all of my votes at Chrom), but figured I'd throw my thoughts out there regardless.

How likely do you think it is that Tellius or Genealogy characters will get a seasonal alt? Or just an alt in general? I mean, I know Ike has alts, but I find it weird that he doesn’t have a seasonal alt despite his popularity. Or that Roy and Lucina haven’t come up as legendary heroes (yet?)

it all depends on CYL rankings and what side of the bed IS happens to wake up on as we saw with sanaki. 

i think its possible, but in geneaology’s case they know that not everyone has played FE4-5 so they’d most likely be joined by some predictable high-sales unit like another god forsaken robin or lucina alt to carry the banner. 

as for legendary roy/lucina, its just a matter of time. i highly doubt there will be anymore OC’s as legendary heroes so characters like alm, marth, lucina and so on will eventually all get legendaries.

Who do you think the new heroes coming on the 21st will be? People are speculating that it's Pent and Louise. Maybe even Owain since the Warriors DLC will include him.

Its either Tharcia, Echoes, Awakening or a Altean banner, my bets on echoes cause of the gauntlet, but SS and telius games are out cause of recent banners as for fates and FE4 was far to recent for another already.

Pent and louise could come but to be honest I feel if anything valentines was the ideal option for that, they missed the ani of their game to do it to so I’m not putting it out there.

Fire Emblem Heroes: World of Holy War Banner

Oh, look! We did actually get a Genealogy banner with three new units! I would like four, but we’ll have to make the best out of them, will we?

The three new units coming this Monday will be Sigurd, Deirdre, and Tailtiu! And these new units have new tricks up their sleeves, including some busted weapons/skills. And I’m just rating them based on their skills/weapons as the stats won’t be up until the dataminers leek the stats.

Anyway, let’s start off with the ever-cheery thunder mage: Tailtiu! Honestly, I didn’t expect her to be in this banner like most people and some wanted someone else such as Lewyn, Ethlyn, or Ayra (though she may be a reward of some sort in the future). So looking at her skills, Tailtiu wields Blarblade+, so this is the first time we actually got a new -Blade tome unit since launch, and rightfully so since Odin REALLY sucks (WTF 22 BASE ATTACK?!), and she can dish out massive damage based on the boosts she gets.

Her Assist Skill is Rally Speed/Resistance, which is really neat for her to buff her allies, mainly those who are fast and can tank a magical hit (*cough cough* Delthea). Her A-Slot Skill is Attack/Resistance 2, which is a nice budget set in case Fury 3 isn’t available for Tailtiu. Her C-Slot is Drive Speed 2, granting her allies two spaces from her +3 Speed, which stacks well with her Rally Skill.

So should you summon for Tailtiu? Yes! Sure, Tailtiu might get overshadowed by both Deirdre and especially Sigurd for this banner, but Tailtiu simple yet effective set-up will not disappoint anyone. And on the bright side, Tailtiu will get demoted to the 4-5 Star Rarity, meaning if she breaks your pity rate, this means a free Blarblade+ for one of your blue mages! So RIP Odin forever.

Next up is the mother to both Seliph and Julia: Deirdre. Like her daughter, Deirdre is a green mage (thank the gods not a healer). Deirdre possess Divine Naga, which is effective against dragons like Julia’s weapon, but Divine Naga cancels out ANY bonuses from ANY unit. So this means she can tank a fully buffed Reinhardt and any -Blade tome user (not a red unit) with little to no problem and can dish the damage back. Well, now Reinhardt has to deal with MORE green units ruining his reign of power.

Her assist skill is Ardent Sacrifice, which is a great skill most of the time, but Deirdre has another skill that requires her to be at max health if possible. Her B-Slot is Quick Riposte 3, so this can make her an excellent enemy phase unit, especially with magical units. This is probably why Ardent Sacrifice shouldn’t stick with Deirdre and instead be swapped with Draw Back or Reposition. Her C-Slot is the final ploy skill: Speed Ploy 3. It’s useful for debuffing foe’s speed by -5, but she can also debuff two stats due to Attack Ploy Sacred Seal, meaning she’ll provide excellent support to not only herself, but to her allies. -5 to both Attack and Speed can get deadly if dealt with right.

So should you summon for Deirdre? Yes! Excellent skills and a fantastic weapon that cancel’s all buffs to any unit, Deirdre will be an excellent member to anyone’s party. And now Reinhardt is screaming that he has to deal with another Naga user...

And last is the main lord of FE4: Sigurd! Almost everyone wanted this lovely man to appear when Heroes came out, and here he is and good god, the wait is worth it! He wields the Divine Tyrfing, which grants him +3 Resistance and if he’s against a magic unit, he’ll receive 50% less damage from the first attack. This is a nerf towards magic units that dominate arena, so even blue units may have trouble killing Sigurd, especially Reinhardt despite the buffs and Death Blow. 

His Special is Miracle, which can come in handy, though there’s better specials Sigurd can take advantage of. His A-Slot is Close Defense 3, which was locked to Summer Tiki, and he can easily tank some extra damage from melee units, especially axe units that are too stupid to face Sigurd. Now his B-Slot is an exclusive skill: Crusader’s Ward. What this skill does is that whenever Sigurd is attacked by a ranged unit that can hit consecutively, the damage will get reduced by 80%! And dear gods, this Brave Bow archers and Reinhardt (him especially), will have trouble killing Sigurd because of this skill, meaning the safest way to combat Sigurd is with a lance unit such as Camus, Cordelia, Sharena, and Effie. His C-Slot is a new skill: Speed Smoke 3, where after Sigurd attacks, enemies within two spaces of him will receive a debuff of -7 to their Speed. It works very well with units with average/low speed such as Hector, Sharena, and most likely Deirdre. So he protects and attacks everyone!

So should you summo- Okay. I really shouldn’t even ask this question. OF COURSE summon for Sigurd! He has excellent skills right off the bat that focuses on tanking both magic and physical attacks, and he’ll be a welcome and fresh addition to Horse Emblem teams and regular teams! Just keep him away from fire for safety reasons.

Overall, this is a fantastic banner to summon from! Highest priority goes from Sigurd, then Deirdre, and at last, Tailtiu. Fantastic units with fantastic and simple base kits off the box, none of the three units will disappoint anyone!

Also, if you payed attention to the video, there’s a sprite of Ayra, a swordmaster in the game, in the map, meaning she’ll most likely be a reward for the next Tempest Trials and not a Grand Hero Battle Unit. Speaking of, with more FE4 characters appearing, this means Arvis should/may come as a GHB unit, in which that’ll be fantastic since we haven’t had a new one since Valter from AUGUST! So get ready Heroes experts when a new GHB unit will release.

Anyway, that’s all I have for today! I hope you get lucky with the units you want!

Mystery of the Emblem essentially reinforced this, plus cutting out male priests and adding a dancer and a single prepromote female general. This is how Genealogy wound up as the first game with female archers, axe users, and myrmidons/mercenaries, as odd as that may seem.

Let me quickly add that Mystery of the Emblem added a female cavalier too in Cecil.

This is just my opinion, but I feel part of it has to do with the early sprites for Archer, Sniper, Hunter, Mercenaries, Heroes and Fighters all being masculine with most of them being notably muscular, especially in their battle animations.

FE1 Cavalier/Paladin, Bishop (fully robed figure), Pegasus Knight and Wyvern Knight sprites look more androgynous whilst not having the exaggerated top heavy design of Armored Knight and General sprites.

Women could definitely fit the FE1 General sprite, but I imagine most artists dislike that as it goes against their archaic ideas on the female gender.

I'll note the BS satellaview extension to FE3 includes a female mercenary, but this is a game without battle animations, which probably helps the player and developers imagine a feminine individual using those sprites.

Also to continue to on about female units being considered special, in FE1, all units are coded as male or female on the player's side, but all enemy units are considered male by default.

This even includes recruitable characters, so if you attack prisoner Maria instead of talking to her, you'll see that she uses the same sprite as Wrys and the enemy healers.

FE3 is similar, though in that game, non armor infantry classes, like male mage and female mage, have separate class slots depending on their gender. Enemy Pegasus Knights have explicitly male sprites, which aligns with FE1's implication that the enemy units are all male.

With mounted classes, the gender a unit is assigned determines whether they dismount to male dismounted knight or female dismounted knight, which have separate class slots and different stats.

Also keep in mind, FE3 had class limitations unlike FE4. To explain, the game's maps only load the map animations for like 14 classes with female Manakete and most enemy classes working correctly on only a small amount of maps.

So FE3 might've skipped on making female Mercenaries and Heroes because of both game engine limitations and not wanting female characters to use those masculine sprites; the FE3 Hero is a muscular guy sticking his large chest out.

Oops, forgot about Cecil. To be fair, IS seems to have forgotten about her too; she's one of the very small number of remaining female Archanea characters who haven't yet appeared in Heroes, even though the other Book 2 early cavs have been in for years.

Not entirely on topic, but it is fairly remarkable just how ill-suited the pre-Awakening games are for padding the roster of a waifu gacha. Only about 30-40% of their playable casts is female, not like all of the modern games not named Echoes that have almost complete gender parity. My cynical reading of this was always that it was a decision made for Awakening to give the male Avatar (and by extension the assumed straight male player) a comparable number of romance options...but now I'm wondering how long IS had been planning Heroes. So much of FE13 really does feel like a dry run for the mobile game, especially in the DLC.

Still, FEH does occasionally surprise. This latest FE6 banner manages to introduce in one way or another no fewer than four new characters - and all of them male! Sure, Lilina has more alts than the lord of her game, but would anyone really expect otherwise?

This is the same person who allegedly leaked Nintendo's entire 2022 lineup, and predicted a Fire Emblem Echoes in the first half of the year. I'm still not inclined to treat their word as definitive until we hear anything official, but have some silly prediction opinions nonetheless:

FE remake duologies, ranked in order from best to awful:

1. Jugdral (FE4 + FE5) - It's about time these two got the love they deserve. I don't care that they're as mechanically distinct as any two FEs could ever be, just make them completely separate experiences and it'll still work. Graphical and musical updates, the usual quality of life updates, full voice acting, a time rewind especially for FE5, and leave the existing story and characters (including all the incest) intact while expanding in places that need it most. Also have this include more Quan/Finn subtext and Diarmuid and Tristan being gay, possibly for each other. IS did so well with Dimidue in FE16 - give me more gay knights!

2. Elibe (FE6 + FE7) - Would be pretty straightforward to remake unless they attempted some weird eugenics baby data transfer between games. I'd be nowhere near as hyped as I would be for Jugdral remakes, but officially localized Binding Blade would be nice and the usual modern updates would be welcome too. Just...don't make Mark into a full Robin/Byleth-esque Avatar, please. (Given how disproportionately popular Lyn is, that's definitely happening.)

3. Tellius (FE9 + FE10) - Controversial opinion maybe, but I don't think either of these games needs a full remake, especially not one that's supposedly more ambitious than FE15. Basic Switch ports with added menus for extra features à la FE1 would be all they really need, with a better system of data transfer being about the only other thing I could think to add.

4. Archanea (FE1/11 + FE3/12) - The Japanese fandom might appreciate this option, but surely even they must be getting tired of remakes of Marth's games. We'd finally get an officially localized version of the War of Heroes, but you know that IS would pull more from New Mystery and would undoubtedly include Kris...who might even get retroactively elevated to full Avatar status, capacity to sleep with the entire cast included. IS will give Kris the opportunity to break up the original lord couple and S rank Marth or Caeda, and the internet will rage for years over whether this is sacrilege or giving fans what they want. Can we not?

Prediction for the "trying new things" original title:

Avatar, possibly silent - can S rank everyone although possibly not always romantically, has a small array of same-sex S ranks that satisfy absolutely no one

An obviously fetishistic hook for the Avatar romances: Fates went all in on (pseudo-)incest, Three Houses did teacher/student, and furries are probably out after Tellius, so let's say...feet? None of the characters wear shoes, and one of the features of the obligatory free roam base area will be a place where you can give them pedicures. Dialogue assures us that this is not sexual in any way.

Multiple routes and another sloppy attempt at moral greyness that fans argue about approximately until the next original FE comes out; it will be very apparent that character archetypes and whole story beats have been copied from one of the older games....Sacred Stones, maybe? That one hasn't been mined dry yet.

Characters are again arranged so as to make for easy Heroes banners, and dominate the mobile game's roster for a good 2-3 years (even though IS weakly attempts to push tie-in banners for the remake as well)

I spend a bit of time on Twitter & Arvis’ sister-fucking is a big point of dislike for him over there. There’s one tweet that stood out to me that a remake should visibly show Arvis having “utter disgust at the truth of his matrimony” which lol. The young wanky kind of fan on Twit are more into the (borderline) characterless Gen 2 (not the subs) & telling you you can’t ship Lester/Patty because their moms being twins actually makes them half-siblings, not cousins (somehow).

I suppose I'm not too surprised, although I'd never see that changing in a remake. Arvis's genuine love for Deirdre and Julia is one of the driving motivations behind his final acts before Seliph kills him, and it lines up with his character that, unlike his own father, he'd want to try to be a devoted husband and father despite the bizarre circumstances. The story is pretty clear on the point that Arvis has to die for his multiple betrayals - including, you know, murdering the lord of the first generation - and inciting a continental conquest, not because he unknowingly impregnated his sister and isn't visibly grossed out by it. Priorities, people.

On one hand I can understand why some fans get more into the kids; they're less developed overall, and the remake has more room to build up Gen 2 as a whole as FE4 does less with its story and characters and lets it lean on the existence of Gen 1 to keep it from being a bog-standard FE plot. I like to plug my fave Diarmuid whenever I get the chance, although as with everyone else in House Nordion my headcanons for him are decidedly not anti-friendly.

The thing with the House Yngvi kids is that it's been joked about for years that, because Edain and Brigid are identical twins, their children are genetic half-siblings as well as cousins. I don't know how much that holds up in the real world, and it definitely wouldn't matter to the characters since we can assume the study of genetics is nonexistent in FE, but either way I can't see it mattering any more than the various other cousin pairings the player can make in the second generation. This is just yet another case of purity wankers coming in late to a fandom that's been casually joking about incest subtext for years and thinking that these games will ever conform to their rigid concepts of morality. The existence of Byleth/80% of the characters they can S rank and...basically every other Heroes banner is ample proof that IS isn't listening.
