‘What on earth do you think you’re doing?’

By the light of a phone torch, Scotland saw Sealand start violently at the bottom of the stairs and press his fist to his chest in a vaguely England-like gesture.

‘You scared the shit out of me!’ He hissed in a stage whisper.

The boy was wearing long, light blue pyjamas; tatty, well-worn child sized things that England had kept about the house for the last thirty years in case of emergency. Whether emergency new child, or child emergency Scotland didn’t want to give thought to. Sealand been staying in England’s London house with him for a while, from what Scotland could guess, and he’d heard no whisper of him going back to his fort any time soon. Maybe longer too than England had planned for.

From his spot on the sofa, Scotland sat up enough to throw a cushion at him. It hit Sealand gently on the head and the boy glared at him, ‘What was that for?’

‘Asked you a question.’

‘I came down for a drink.’

‘Tap not good enough for you in the bathroom upstairs? And turn that bloody torch off.’

Sealand did so. ‘I wanted milk.’

‘Christ.’ Scotland flopped back down onto the sofa and crossed his arms under his head, ‘You’re spoilt, you are.’

Sealand said nothing. He stood there for unmoving for a while, as if waiting to be told off or shoo’d back to bed. When this didn’t come, after a moment Scotland heard him approach the sofa and then he appeared above him, arms crossed on the backrest and face dark in the dim light, ‘What are you doing down here.’

In reply, Scotland pointed to the ceiling. Sealand followed to where he was pointing and they both waited in silence until a large, rumbling snore made itself known through the floorboards.

‘Ah.’

‘Can’t shut him up.’

‘I thought you were in my room?’

‘I can hear him through the walls. Quieter down here.’

Sealand looked thoughtful, ‘You should have gone to bed before him.’

‘Wouldn’t have mattered. He’s had whiskey; that always makes him louder.’

‘Dad’s got special headphones you could have stolen. He uses them for when he and Uncle Rhys go camping.’

‘Do I look like I want more bullshit this weekend?’ Scotland huffed and pulled the blanket he was under higher up to his chin, ‘Bad enough with him griping about his fucking shed.’

‘The one you broke the roof of?’

‘It was rotten. I stepped on- you know what? I’m not having this argument at-‘ Scotland checked his phone, squinting at the screen in the dim light, ‘two o’clock in the morning. Now piss off and let me sleep.’

Sealand’s head disappeared. Scotland flipped over on his side, hiding his eyes under his hand as the kitchen light flicked on.

After a few minutes of rummaging and the sounds of cupboards opening and closing, the light turned back off and Scotland heard Sealand return to the living room.

‘Got you a digestive, if you want it.’

‘Nah ta. All yours.’

Sealand immediately took a huge bite. Scotland got the impression that the offer hadn’t been entirely genuine.

‘Are you going to be working on the car again tomorrow?’

‘Hmm.’

‘Can I help?’

‘No.’

‘Why?’

‘Christ Peter, ‘Scotland dropped his hand, ‘what do you want, lad?’

‘Nothing.’ The glass in Sealand’s hand reflected the streetlight through the curtain as he moved, ‘Just asked a question.’

A silence fell. There was something Sealand wasn’t saying, an all too familiar unspoken request that Scotland had encountered many times throughout the years.

He sighed and sat up, twisting to turn on the side table lamp as he did so. The light revealed Sealand by the coffee table, small looking in his baggy pyjama shirt. His hair was ruffled, tousled from a restless and uneasy sleep and he turned his face away when Scotland looked at him to toe at the rug. He reminded Scotland of someone very similar over a millennia ago, someone too stubborn to say what he really wanted but desperately wanting it anyway.

‘What.’ Sealand said defensively, meeting Scotland’s eye.

‘Can’t sleep?’

Sealand shrugged but stayed quiet.

‘If Arthur’s on your side of the bed, just kick him.’

Sealand conceded to a small smile but didn’t offer anything else.

Scotland swung his legs to the floor and reached for the remote on the coffee table, ‘What was that shit show you keep going on at me to watch?’

‘Ultimate Survivor?’

‘That’s the one.’ Scotland clicked the TV on and turned the volume down low, ‘Might as well get it over with if we’ve got nothing better to do. I’m not going to be able to sleep whilst Rhys is like that.’

‘Really?’ Sealand brightened.

‘Aye. And I’ll prove to you it’s all bullshit.’

‘It’s really not.’ Sealand joined him on the sofa and buried his legs under Scotland’s blanket, ‘They’ve got all these specialists-‘

‘Bullshit.’

‘It’s not!’

‘Nah, I mean what advice they give. Half is too pretentious and the other half’s all bollocks.’ Scotland settled back against the sofa and slung his arm over the back, ‘Like that Bear Grylls idiot- drinking your own piss. What an eejit.’

‘If you’re ever stranded without water-‘

Scotland made a face, ‘He wouldn’t know how to make a good fire if he was next to a burning house. Now shut up and let me focus.’

Sealand scooted closer and drew his knees up, ‘Bet you one of them will give up before ten minutes in.’

‘I reckon five. English pansies.’

‘Winner gets a tenner?’

‘Deal.’

Hi, love. With all due respect to my lovely mutuals and friends here, IMO these kinds of discussions only make sense if you’re British or American. I’m neither. So as someone “in-between” that grew up somewhere with enormous cultural diversity and significant influence of both places... it's confusing as fuck why people get stuck in these kinds of things sometimes lol.

I’m from South America and I lived in England for a while so what I can say is that this is definitely a thingTM. British boys are very "touchy" and affectionate with each other, and that ends up being a striking contrast to British adults or Americans in general, that are not touchy people at all. So I do agree that Louis was very British in that sense, he was very touchy with everyone and when he got older he really started owning this very strong cultural background in many many ways. So it makes perfect sense. With that being said, his behaviour never came across as something new to me, people are very warm where I come from, and I can clearly see the difference between what was simply culturally normal to Louis and the kind of physical intimacy he had with Harry. That was a whole different thing, which also came from Harry's side, and the excuse of being "too British" was never used on him, so. Listen... boys will be boys, okay? They're stupid and innuendos are very funny to them and blah, blah, blah. But the thing with Harry and Louis is that it went so much further, them being touchy and affectionate barely scratches the surface. So I think this argument is very superficial, coming from people not looking at it on a bigger picture.

Many many years ago, I was certain I could never write literature in English. I'd come back from backpacking (used to live in the UK back then) and took some travel writing seminars and thought to myself that I'd write my travel stories in English but literature would need to be in my native tongue, because there's no way I had the ability to write a novel in a second language.

Then I started writing fanfiction and I discovered that, yes, I could write fic in another lg! lol

Differences might be that I'm often more poetic, even surreal in my native language. I can't say for certain whether it's a language thing or a mood thing, because I now write exclusively in Eng. Also, I think I'm much funnier in English. I don't know why.

As to whether I find something easier to write in English? OMG YES. It's so weird. I talked about this with a Greek writer friend and he was the same. There is no way I could write fantasy in my language. NO WAY. I don't know why. I suspect because most fans of it tend to read loads of it in English? I have a fantasy wip with a priestess and a warrior and there's a prince and a princess--you know, typical fantasy fare--and just thinking of the equivalent words in my language makes me shrivel inside. I'm not kidding, I think writing a fantasy in Greek would be very clumsy for me. People do it! Perhaps I should read more Greek fantasy idk

I also could NEVER write sex scenes in my language. NO. I find the idea impossible. It doesn't compute. No.

EDIT TO ADD that I've been often told I've written some unusual phrase, and I'm 100% sure it is because I'm not a native speaker, and thus not familiar with all the proper connotations so I just write whatever comes to my head and oftentimes that comes out interesting.

Getting together at 19 and breaking up at 27 was the same path as Austin with V, and they met when he was 15.  A lot of shippers were super mad they weren’t married with kids by then.  But children don’t prevent a breakup and I’m glad there are no children who have to suffer as they go their own ways. Sophie’s kids will have parents on 2 different continents.  It’s going to be tough on everyone.

I probably wouldn’t care too much if they didn’t have kids together.  It’s also going to be challenging because it sounds like he will be staying in the US, and she wants to go back and live in the UK.  Soooo....I can only imagine what the custody battle of THAT  scenario is going to look like for the both of them.... So! I actually lived in Belgium, not the Netherlands, but I LOVED it. Best six months of my life and I’m not even joking hahaha. I’ve been to the Netherlands and it’s basically the same except for the size because Belgium is reeeeally small. About the size of Maryland but with double the population. The train sister is quite good so you can reach every “big” city in 1h (there are like 3 big cities, so it’s not that hard really hahaha). I lived in Ghent which is in Flanders so they speak Flemish and Dutch (they’re kinda similar but don’t tell anyone I said that) and some also speak French. The weird thing about Belgium is that they have three official languages (French, Dutch, German) depending on the region but as I said to Gina it doesn’t really matter as everyone speaks English. Can’t have a damn private conversation in public ever even though you’re in a foreign country 😂

Belgium is like the less cool sister of the Netherlands but I think it’s very underrated!!!!! They’re very open and welcoming and progressive. Everyone bikes there as well 😂 you have to pay attention because bikes RULE and if you’re on foot you have to stop to let them through (which is absurd to me, being Italian, bc here you see a few bikes and THEY stop lol). Anyway the housing “crisis” is common in both countries, I think. Maybe a bit better in Belgium? Not sure though, sorry 🤷

As for job opportunities, I think it’s easier than in other places (now I’m talking about both countries). They’re very international, and obv it depends on what kind of job you’re looking for an show qualified you are but overall I think there’s a good job offer (my professor once told me that the province I was in had an employment rate of 80% in people aged 20-60). Again, idk anything specific about the Netherlands but I know more than one person that moved there and found a job quite easily compared to Italy.

Now! Moving on to Italy ;))

I can’t say I want to keep living here, honestly. The south is left behind, work is hard to find unless you’re somewhat specialised, the cost of living is levitating and the government sucks. However, we have a history of unstable governments so who knows how long it will last hahah

There are some new awful waves of homo/transphobia and hate crimes + being an ex fascist country that never truly went away completely. However it’s full of people that fucking hate fascists and nazis and manifest their disapproval regarding right wing parties (that are currently governing) and policies. I have to admit that I’m not that much into politics because I’m tiiiiiired of it being always the same shit if not worse and I think this is a widespread feeling (less and less people care and vote so this obviously makes everything get worse 💀).

The transportation is good only in big cities and between them, really. I lived 50km away from uni and it took me TWO HOURS with at least two different means of transportation. Now that I live in the city, though, I can go wherever I want very easily even though I’m in the outskirts. Milan (which is where I live and study haha) is beautiful, but very busy and definitely not the most beautiful city in the country. I like living here though, you have everything you need and more + the cultural scene is quite active and there are always events of any kind. I have to say it’s a bit more clean than, for example, Rome. It’s called the economical capital of Italy so as you can imagine finding a job here is easier than in other places. Many people from the south actually migrate up north to have better job opportunities (which means that the south keeps lagging behind etc etc and it SUCKS because the south is sooo beautiful and the living conditions could be so much better if we had a good government that knew how to handle stuff to use the resources we have ☹️).

So, Milan is good for work and stuff but people are definì less welcoming than the rest of Italy. Everyone is always busy lol. However (it’s fucking sad to say but it’s true) I’m pretty sure that since you’re American and not from somewhere in Africa, South America or Asia.. people would treat better. There’s still this kind of myth about the American dream, you know? I think it’s the remains of our ancestors migrating to America to have better life opportunities (only to be treated as garbage like they threat immigrants here 💀 sometimes I can’t believe how fucking stupid and plainly ignorant some people can be).

I think I also have to mention that Italian bureaucracy is fucking awful. Like. For real. The worst thing ever. It takes ages for the smallest, stupidest things, you still need to do a lot of stuff in person and not online and in general it doesn’t work really well. I have no idea how it works in the rest of the world but I know that it’s been like 9 months since a relative of mine passed away and we’re still waiting for the succession to be done. To make another example: to have the passport you have to take an appointment and the first free slots are usually after at least three months. Then you need to go to that specific place which must be in your province of residence and it takes like 10 mins to sign the docs and let them take them your fingerprints and THEN you wait like two more weeks for it to be ready to be picked up. I swear it’s so!!!!! Frustrating!!!!!!

Now that I read back what I wrote I realised that it doesn’t sound really positive 😂🥲 maybe it’s bc as I said I want to move so I tend to take into consideration all those things that make me wanna go abroad.. Anyway in conclusion I kinda agree with the other anon that messaged Gina. It’s a beautiful place but more like for holidays than for living. In my opinion.

I think that going to the UK is obviously a good choice, but I’m not sure it’s gonna be that easy to go live in the continent afterwards, after the brexit mess and all that. It’s fucked up, really. It was sooo easy before that :((

I think the best option (but, like, I’m no one to tell you what’s best, obviously jdjdjs) is would be to go the the Netherlands or Belgium and from there moving wherever you want. I think it would be way easier since they’re parte of the UE etc. + as I said like ten times they’re very very nice places to live in :))

Hey anon I’m a trans western expat (aka white foreigner) in China. Pre-HRT trans male and living here for 4 years in a tier 2 city (smaller than Shanghai/Beijing but still pretty big) Was meant to go to Thailand to transition in 2020 but then COVID happened and I’m still here lmaoooo. Anyway I’ll share with you my overall experiences with being trans in China. It’s all pretty much in-line with the stuff written above!

Most younger Chinese people will have an awareness of what trans is, but unless you’re on HRT and pass well they will likely call you by your gender assigned at birth. For me the only exceptions to this are my gf and one of my BFFs, every other Chinese person will call me a girl. A lot of Chinese ppl may also just assume you’re a T (tomboy aka masculine/butch lesbian). My gf also thought I was a T at first until I explained it to her lol

Other foreign ppl will be generally quite understanding but may misgender you if you don’t pass well enough, even the more open-minded ones. All of my foreign friends know I’m trans and will tell others I’m trans/a boy, but most of them will also often misgender me. They don’t mean any harm by it, they’re just not used to being around a trans person. I usually don’t bother correcting them but I’m sure if I did they’d get better at using the right pronouns. There’s transphobic ppl too of course, but within the foreign community you’re never going to be in danger (one wrong move and foreigners can get deported so no one is gonna risk their visa to hurt a trans person) the worst transphobia I’ve experienced from another foreigner is helicopter jokes lol

Most work contracts will have equality clauses but they’ll usually only mention stuff like sex, age, nationality, and sexuality. I’ve never signed a contract that mentions gender identity included in these protections. So at work I don’t bring it up unless asked by someone, including the kids. If a kid asks me if I’m a boy or a girl I just ask them “idk what do you think?” And I just let them decide what to call me. Sometimes it’s boy, sometimes it’s girl, usually it’s boygirl 🤷‍♀️

Overall my advice would be while the young people you meet in cities are pretty understanding towards queer/LGBTQIA+/trans stuff, if you’re pre-HRT then don’t come to China unless you’re okay with being misgendered a LOT 😅

These days being misgendered doesn’t bother me but that was something I had to learn to be okay with. Generally every white/western immigrant coming to China will need to learn to be adaptable and be a bit thick-skinned to be able to live out here long-term, because there’s a lot of cultural differences that you’ll struggle to accept otherwise. “Misgendering” will sadly just be one of the many things on your list you’ll need to learn to adapt around.

(Also adapting is not a concept unique to moving to China btw- culture shock will happen pretty much any place you move to. So if you change your mind about China but decide to go to Japan/Thailand/etc. be prepared to still learn how to adapt regardless of how accepting to trans ppl the country is)

Also idk this for sure but if you’re taking HRT and your documents have your correct gender then I imagine misgendering won’t be a big issue as ppl won’t even be aware you were assigned a different gender at birth! So you’ll probably be okay living in a city with access to a gender clinic. But this idk for sure, it would just be my assumption

Anyway sorry for rambling a bit, hopefully my experiences are helpful for you anon! For what it’s worth, I really do enjoy my life in China, in fact I enjoy my life here a lot more than my life at home in the UK! but it wasn’t enjoyable when I first arrived and I had to grow a thick skin pretty fast 🥲

How would you describe the attitude towards trans people in China? ((I ask this as a trans person who would like to work there as an expat))

I don’t live in China so I couldn’t tell you with any certainty what to expect in real life anyway. But, you asked, so I want to at least take a stab at it, even if I just end up rambling about other things.

I expect you know it’s already hard enough to be trans in the west, even in the supposed liberal utopia of major cities. Now think about moving to another country and having to start out with no real support network. Now on top of that, while recognition and acceptance of queer identities, particularly gays and lesbians, in China has taken strides forward in recent years, it’s still not on the same level with the same sort of sensitive treatment as what you could say many have come to expect in the West (depending on where you live). The official government stance on LGBT issues is a tepid “uhhhhhhmmmm 🙈🙉🙊” (“Laws protect all individuals from discrimination on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, etc, but until something happens don’t look at us for nothing 🤐. Please clap.”), so most LGBT education/awareness largely comes through local grassroots efforts (slow and frequently hampered) and online/global media exposure (tho this also requires a level of voluntary engagement).

So, I’m not trying to spook you, but I wanted to make that clear first, that merely moving to another country as a trans person is no enviable task. If you do immigrate to China or live there for a period of time, you will of course at least have some level of privilege as an English speaking (white?) foreigner, so that might help, especially if you plan on hanging out with other expats anyway. Living in a major city would also help, which is really just to say, city folk anywhere are always going to be more open-minded and so I guess this finally brings us close to more of an answer to your question:

Based on my limited observations, I feel like the attitude toward the every day trans person trends negative compared to the west, perhaps largely due to lack of understanding (why would “choose” to be trans, how could you do such a thing, etc). It is not illegal or anything, and HRT/gender reassignment surgery is available in China, medically speaking, but again, I sense that the knowledge/understanding disparity when it comes to transgender identity is pretty high and therefore acceptance is inversely proportional to that. Discussion of the topic that I have seen has never really been that nuanced. Young people are more likely to accept and support LGBT+ individuals in general, but that’s “in general (like, I supsect that it might be more for LGB support versus trans support, as typically LGB issues receive greater attention than trans issues).

On the more neutral/positive end, there will be people who say “as long as they’re not hurting anyone”/ “a person has to live for themself/respect each person’s right to make their own choices in life” and that sort of thing, but I’ve never seen anything pro trans or pro gender revelations per se (this is true by and large in the West as well I think, so no big diff there), and anecdotally, I’ve seen a lot of those comments toward trans people of like “oh but you used to be so pretty/handsome, why would blah blah blah”, and more emphasis seems to be placed on passing, like I guess the more successfully you transition to the opposite gender (ftm or mtf) the more respect you deserve (as if transition should be the goal) (like if you botch it, visually speaking, you might as well have not even bothered) (but I guess this is also true in mainstream thought in the west), and even if you pass you might still get hit with the “can you believe they’re actually a _?”/ "wow I have to be more careful" treatment.

I guess it’s worth noting Jin Xing, a popular trans celebrity/TV presenter in China, is also highly respected, even amongst older generations (which is cool). To many, she “already counts as a real woman” (to quote a comment I saw once) because she’s seen as dedicated to being herself (a woman), and is a wonderful mother to 3 adopted children. People respect her because she worked hard and she has an attractive personality, but at the same time, she’s also high profile enough that the disrespect can get drowned out by the admirers, so she's not a typical case of the trans experience in China obviously.

TLDR

Soooo. I don't live in China so my perspective is limited (I can't emphasise that enough) and only my own opinion based on discourse/exchanges, commentary, depictions, etc, I've witnessed on the Chinese web (douyin, bilibili, zhihu, and douban forums for the most part).

I don’t know how rude anyone would be to your face. Being a foreigner/expat (I said “(white?)” earlier because I feel like “expat” usually refers to white people) might afford you some extra privilege or at least a wider berth from dealing with assholes. As of right now, my impression of the general attitude toward trans people is: improving but still behind and still with the focus on successful transition. Lots of awareness is still needed but efforts to increase it are slow and hampered.

Hey, so this isn’t related to anything, I just need to vent a bit, so if you’re sensitive to school shootings, you might want to skip to the line of ⚠️’s at the end of this short rant (Because I don’t know if you can do that “under the cut” thing with asks like you can do on a normal post).

Anyway, on to the rant:

The reason why students become school shooters because the school system has failed them.

We have no mental health support, we get punished for being bullied, our basic human rights are constantly violated, anything that give us any positive emotional feedback is taken away, and no one listens to us because we’re “angsty teenagers.” Add to this the fact that 1 out of every 5 or 10 teachers is abusive, and it’s not surprising that some of the more fiction-deprived students decide to kill as many people as they can in last-ditch effort to draw attention to the fact that they’re suffering under the tyrannical thump of 60–year-olds circle-jerking on a massive power trip.

I’m not joking when I say that fanfiction kept me from making national news back in high school.

School is shit so you decide to kill innocent people that don’t wanna be there anymore than you do? It’s awful and I can’t deny that school systems are flawed completely, it’s the same in UK, but you’d really face jail time just because your schools trash? It’s ridiculous and unnecessary. America needs to clean up its fucking act real quick

My school was awful too, lots of unsupportive teachers that thought they knew better than me cuz I was younger than them, but I never thought about harming anybody because of that. It’s just another reason to ban guns over there. Y’all aren’t using it for self fucking defense, you’re using it to harm the people around you cuz you think ‘making a change’ means causing hundreds of deaths and going on live television for man slaughter
