Jancy Academic Rivals AU thoughts
Based on this post. I have spent all day thinking about it and here's what I have so far
1996 Maine
Robin is Nancy’s roommate
Argyle is Jonathan’s roommate (I personally love the idea that Argyle is secretly rich)
Steve is also Jonathan & Argyle's roommate but he's never home so Jonathan goes like 3 weeks before ever seeing him in their dorm
Nancy’s best subjects are Chemistry, English, and Polisci-Debate
Jonathan’s best subjects are English, Polisci-Debate, Art, and Latin
Jonathan is from Hawkins and was friendish with Nancy but moved to Montauk, NY when he was like 7 so Nancy doesn’t remember him
He remembers her bc of course he does
Nancy is class president because she’s top of the class and is in charge of touring students around campus
Nancy begged her parents to send her here at the age of like 13 and she’s been there since
Jonathan is just now transferring in as a junior and a scholarship student
Jonathan applied because he wants to go to The National School of Photography in France or the Rhode Island School of Design
While touring Jonathan Nancy makes an off comment about how that’s essentially a waste of an education and how she went to Paris over the summer
Jonathan is understandably annoyed because his assumptions that everyone at the school is going to be nothing but spoiled, pompous rich kids are proving true
He’s also annoyed she does not remember him at all (but never brings up that they sort of know each other bc awkward)
So he asks in a snippy way what she plans to do and she tells him she's going to go to Oxford to study Journalism and he asks how that’s any better
They are very much giving pretentious and just another suburban girl in their initial introductions
Jonathan resolves to attempt to ignore her as much as possible which is very difficult because he has a crush (He may think she's ambitious and overly competitive but she's also gorgeous and wasn't mean about him being a scholarship student)
Anyways one night while looking for somewhere to smoke Jonathan & Argyle find Nancy, Robin, and Steve breaking into the school pool for a late-night swim/hang out (Picture s1 pool scene minus the murder and st*ncy scene)
And naturally, our intrepid little art hoe takes photos
Nancy finds out and gets even madder at him because if anyone else found out she’d be in trouble and it could ruin her reputation
THEN as though all of that wasn’t enough Jonathan corrects Nancy’s Math error in class and she gets pissed
Because she’s right she's always right (except this time)
And Jonathan teasingly offers to tutor her if she needs it
Thus academic rivalry is born
Nancy is pissed because Jonathan’s Advanced Latin class counts as more credit. Jonathan is pissed because Nancy is so much better at Chemistry.
Nancy tries to transfer into Latin for the extra credit, and Jonathan tries to transfer out of Chemistry because he's better at Earth Sciences (Jonathan isn't successful and Nancy does transfer in but she's completely lost)
It gets to the point where the whole school knows that these two are just insane and trying to one-up each other
Their polisci-debate class is just the two of them arguing over various issues (not that they necessarily disagree but they both approach issues with different viewpoints i.e. gender v class in s3) while the class watches
And the sexual tension is BAD which Nancy knows and hates because she’s mad enough he can challenge her academically but then he’s also hot??? (Robin is unrelenting until Nancy finally admits to thinking that Jonathan is hot but Nancy insists nothing is going to happen)
Jonathan is lowkey-highkey dying inside from the tension but he’s thriving in teasing Nancy over academics (Argyle thinks he's crazy over this and can't figure out why they won't just do hanky panky)
Argyle and Robin end up bonding and forming the “Jonathan & Nancy just make out already club” which they definitely treat like a skull and crossbones-ish secret society
Steve is also an unwilling member
This leads to Jonathan & Nancy having to hang out more outside of class because of their roommates
This also leads to Nancy buying Jonathan a new lens for his camera ( I don’t think she’d get him a whole new camera) for his birthday (I HC his birthday as October 10th) and he feels guilty because it’s too nice of a gift
So to "pay her back" he makes a mixtape for her (Purely platonic he assures Argyle. Can you believe she doesn't know The Cure?) (He def puts Just Like Heaven & Friday I'm in Love on it though)
And maybe on Halloween Nancy and Jonathan end up at a party in the woods behind the school and maybe he lets her borrow his sweater because she’s cold
And maybe he walks her back to her dorm after this party because she’s been drinking a little (not like blacked out though) and there’s allegedly a bear in the woods (Jonathan might also be high and a little paranoid)
On the walk home, he finally reveals that they went to elementary together.
Plot Twist Nancy did remember him but she was still holding a grudge because he disappeared without saying goodbye
Jonathan then apologizes and makes a big deal about saying goodnight to her
She returns his sweater a couple days later and everyone starts gossiping about why she had it and Nancy retreats after this
But then it all comes to a head when their Polisci-Debate professor (Murray) assigns them to be partners on a research article (because he knows)
One minute they’re whisper-arguing in the library and then Jonathan kisses her
Nancy kisses him back
They are hot and heavy making out in the stacks until the librarian catches them
They have to talk their way out of detention
Then they go up to Nancy's room (because Robin is in Jonathan's with Steve & Argyle) and share a bed
They don’t tell anyone though (again Murray knows) because they don’t want to give them the satisfaction
They continue business as usual then one night over Thanksgiving break Robin, Argyle, and Steve catch them holding hands as they’re walking back from the woods and are like “busted”
Steve owes Robin money
They still continue the academic rivalry part though because Jonathan knows Nancy likes the competition and he’s happy to indulge her
They end up tying for the top of the class at the end of the semester effectively ending Nancy’s streak.
I am attempting to write this as a full fic but I cannot write fanfic to save my life so if someone wants to take this plot bunny be my guest (just tag me when you're done)

Guys hear me out... Greatest Showman Digital Circus AU
Featuring:
Caine as PT Barnum and Pomni as Charity (because I'm a sucker for showtime, you can rip it from my cold dead hands)
Think about it, Caine chasing a life Pomni never really wanted. Her being completely satisfied with the life she had and a circus coming in the middle of it.
Jax as Phillip Carlyle and Ragatha as Anne Wheeler (cuz you can also rip bunnydoll from my cold dead hands)
THE MOON AS JENNY LIND.
Kinger and Queenie can be Pomni's parents, except the kinda asshole dad can just be Queenie worried asf that some random boy took her daughter and left (I SUPPORT WOMEN'S RIGHTS AND THEIR WRONGS).
Zooble and Gangle are part of the circus too :> I'm thinking Zooble can be covered in tattoos >:3 and Gangle can be Lettie Lutz. Just have the most beautiful voice ever.
I know I have to finish the Tangled AU but if this gets enough notes I might write this fic im actually so tempted rn-

Not from the ask list but the characters in ur fics as Irish counties and why?
anon, this has absolutely sent me. i have genuinely never seen something more up my alley.
let's start with characters we can pull from the series for ireland's six superior counties, shall we...
antrim = oliver wood
a county full of lads who've never met a spivvy tracksuit they don't think is the height of fashion, and who have a vastly inflated sense of their success at sports.
armagh = tom riddle
armagh has a [deservedly] bloody reputation. he could settle down in the murder triangle. he'd like that.
down = draco malfoy
people who live in co. down really like thinking they're better than the rest of us just because it's easy for them to get to belfast [lads, how's that something to boast about?], so they have to be the series' whiniest flop.
fermanagh = rubeus hagrid
fermanagh is full of docile lads who build things, in my experience.
londonderry = ron weasley
canonically gorgeous, gorgeous girlies live in this fine county - by which i mean, of course, that i do. we deserve to be represented by the series' most gorgeous girly. and a ginger sweetheart with six siblings [so you know which side of the sectarian divide his parents are on...] would go down a storm with our mams.
tyrone = harry potter
my brother once had his nose broken in a pub in strabane, which doesn't sound particularly interesting until you realise that my brother is a priest. by which i mean - a county filled with people who are reckless, quick-tempered, and always ready to throw hands? it can only be represented by one man...
---
and then the rest...
carlow = quirinus quirrell
the most interesting thing there is a big rock.
cavan = percy weasley
everyone i've ever met from cavan has been really boring and really tight. so there's that.
clare = ginny weasley
because it's gorgeous, in a not like other girls way.
cork = albus dumbledore
look at this canon line and tell me dumbledore's not a cork man... "In fact, being — forgive me — rather cleverer than most men, my mistakes tend to be correspondingly huger.”
donegal = sybill trelawney
always away with the fairies up there... and always drunk too.
dublin = walburga black
everyone you've ever met who lives in dublin is genuinely shocked to discover that the rest of the world exists beyond the m50. it's not not giving "has never set foot in muggle london and would die before she did".
galway = arthur and molly weasley
galway is the home of the nation's sophisticated [and, apparently, sexually adventurous] culchies - which fits two people from clearly quite distinguished backgrounds who nonetheless live the way they do...
kerry = gilderoy lockhart
you will never see american tourists get scammed more glamorously than in kerry.
kildare = regulus black
considerably less interesting than - and devoid of identity in comparison to - its neighbour, dublin.
kilkenny = charlie weasley
all they do is have red hair and hurl.
laois = daphne greengrass
on account of her irrelevance.
leitrim = sally-ann perks
on account of her irrelevance.
limerick = bellatrix lestrange
limerick used to be known as "stab city". she'd fit right in.
longford = mungundus fletcher
gombeen men abound.
louth = myrtle warren
because they [by which i mean the two people i know who were born there...] are always fucking moaning.
mayo = remus lupin
perpetually mopey, unless they reckon they're great at something.
meath = cormac mclaggen
they wish they were as class as the lads in dublin.
monaghan = cuthbert binns
genuinely couldn't locate it on a map.
offaly = grawp
i mean, who fucking knows? the entire place is a bog.
roscommon = aberforth dumbledore
you can guess why...
sligo = fred and george weasley
wheeler dealers, the lot of them.
tipperary = fleur delacour
the home of gorgeous, gorgeous girlies with striking accents.
waterford = dobby
they love a good strike.
westmeath = hermione granger
not somewhere you'd expect you'd choose to live if you were a bit of a know-it-all. and yet.
wexford = neville longbottom
they love to bang on about the soil.
wicklow = marge dursley
she drives a range rover and looks down on anyone who farms, change my mind.

It's the first night of Hanukkah and the first night of the Panfandom Hanukkah Bingo! We have a lovely selection of fics and fandoms already this year, and I'm so excited to see what else we receive in the next seven days!
Alone in the Dark by josiebelladonna/@feverinfeveroutfic | AO3 | tumblr
He found himself trapped out in the wilderness during a power outage, and his meeting with that one strange girl proved to be a stroke of fate for him. A fic that asks “what if Alex and Christine had met in another period?”
baby namings by aelisheva | AO3 | tumblr
"She's beautiful," the nurse coos, turning to a proud Seth and Summer. "What are you going to name her?"
Bring On the Light: Snowed In by melbelle310/@perfectpurls | AO3 | tumblr
Ace had hoped to make it home for the first night of Channukah, but when a blizzard rolls through town, he and Nancy have to make do in their apartment.
broken memory (of you and me and something) by JustGail/@evilwickedme | AO3 | tumblr
“I haven’t celebrated Hanukkah since I was a very small child. Younger than you.” Jason sat down on the chair he’d taken before. He was strangely restless and excited, but he still forced himself to say, “We don’t have to if you don’t want to.” “I already said I’m fine with Christmas,” Bruce said. “No, Hanukkah,” Jason said. He wouldn’t have been able to explain his stubbornness on the issue even to himself, let alone to Bruce. But he knew this is what he wanted this year. “I want… You don’t have to. But it looks nice.” // The first time Jason celebrated Hanukkah, and the first time Bruce celebrated Hanukkah in oh… two decades at least.
Eight Nights by genuineformality/@genuineformality | AO3 | tumblr
On the first night of Chanukah, Viktor lights a chanukiah for the first time in a long time. On the subsequent nights, Viktor and Jayce explore a lot of complicated feelings.
Generations by Hollie47/@hollie47 | AO3 | tumblr
Amanda is more than happy to have Spock and Jim home for Hanukkah.
H1. Dreidel - Scott Lang by aimmyarrowshigh/@aimmyarrowshigh | AO3 | tumblr
Scott is a terrible winner.
H2. Judah Maccabee - Mike Wheeler by aimmyarrowshigh/@aimmyarrowshigh | AO3 | tumblr
They will outlive this.
H3. Music - Poe Dameron by aimmyarrowshigh/@aimmyarrowshigh | AO3 | tumblr
The gas giant of Yavin hangs low in the sky, red tendrils of almost-dawn unfurling in the sky above the Dameron ranch.
H4. Tradition - Pepper Ann Pearson by aimmyarrowshigh/@aimmyarrowshigh | AO3 | tumblr
Every year, Milo eats more than his fair share of latkes and spends the next three hours lying on the Pearsons' living room floor, moaning. Every year, Nicky brings over some concoction made primarily of beets, and maybe wheat germ. Every year, Pepper Ann thinks it's the best Hanukkah yet.
H5. First Night - Snap Wexley by aimmyarrowshigh/@aimmyarrowshigh | AO3 | tumblr
Everyone else can keep their Life Day celebrations. Snap prefers this.
Hopeless Situations by abby_gaytes | AO3 | tumblr
Russians don’t wear ugly holiday sweaters. But arguing with Marcus Cole’s infuriating, ineffaceable enthusiasm has always been a hopeless situation.
Keep a candle burning by dharmashark | AO3 | tumblr
Bucky has been sitting cross legged on the floor with Steve Rogers for three hours. He feels giddy on two donuts too many, his ribs tight and hot from laughing. But mostly he feels smug as hell: he cannot wait to tell Clint how wrong he was when said this was a terrible idea. Well, what Clint had actually said was, “Are you out of your mind? Steve, as in Steve, is going to spend Hanukkah with you, in your studio apartment?” — In which Bucky can totally, definitely last eight nights without falling for his childhood best friend. Again.
miracles happen (once in a while) by aelisheva | AO3 | tumblr
By some interdimensional Hanukkah miracle, two versions of Annabeth and Percy are able to meet. The older pair proceed to embarrass the two middle schoolers as much as they can.
Pretty Hanukkah Wrapping For A Even Prettier Pussy Cat. by IndigoSun/@sweetwithheatwriting | AO3 | tumblr
May Parker was well aware that there were countless Jewish people around the world who experienced a relatively mellow and very happy cozy Hanukkah with their family and a few friends every year. She didn’t get to experience that as a general rule of thumb. I mean, don’t get May wrong, she was definitely Jewish and got to celebrate Hanukkah with the joy and company that was supposed to come with it, except her typical Hanukkah was usually brimming over with the barely mitigated chaos that came with celebrating it with her family and dozens and dozens of her friends on the world saving spectrum, Peter, Erik Lehnsherr, and the memory of what kissing Kitty Pryde had tasted like and what her dark silken curls felt like in her hands as she shakily arched her back and pleadingly mewled at he- Well. May was a bit haunted in the best way by that. She might just end up getting the girl this year if the stars aligned and she stopped sabotaging herself.
season of miracles by BettyRose/@yellingabouthistory | AO3 | tumblr
Padmé Naberrie and Tsabin Dolan have been best friends since they were international pen pals in middle school, so it was a dream come true when Tsabin came to spend a semester at Padmé's college in America. But when Padmé brings her home for the holidays, people keep jumping to the wrong conclusion. Padmé definitely loves her best friend, but not like… loves-loves. At least, she's pretty sure. Okay, so she's… maybe not sure beyond a reasonable doubt. But that's not the relevant burden of proof, because having a friendly little girl crush isn't a crime! And Padmé would know, she's president of the Otelia College Pre-Law Society!
something has to give (but not today) by skylarkblue/@skylarkblue | AO3 | tumblr
Peter Parker is struggling to juggle his family responsibilities and his duty as Spider-Man.
That We Are Alive by americanhoney913/@americanhoney913 | AO3 | tumblr
Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, shehecheyanu, v'kiy'manu, v'higiyanu laz'man hazeh. --- Shehecheyanu (Debbie Friedman melody) *** Eddie's whole family comes together to celebrate the first night of Hannukah with their newborn.
What Callie Kept by abby_gaytes | AO3 | tumblr
There are many things Callie Spengler was happy to abandon in her attempts to distance herself from the family and father who had caused her such pain in her life. Like her curly hair, and her briefly-budding interest in science, and her residence in New York City. But there are also a few things she kept - like her last name, and her Jewish identity, and the Hanukkah traditions she shared with Egon during their all-too-limited time together.

Learned by Heart, the Emma Donoghue book about Anne Lister (really centered on her schoolmate and partner Eliza Raine) was very good.
I continued the Aster Glenn Gray trend with their A Garter as a Lesser Gift, a WWII m/m/f retelling of Gawain and the Green Knight, and also ready Casey McQuiston's YA I Kissed Shara Wheeler which stressed me out with the protagonist's realistic not-noticing her best friend struggling to tell her something.
Now I'm reading a 1970s novel-length Star Trek fanfic, The Weight by Leslie Fish. Amazing that Archive of Our Own is importing pre-internet fic! I had read about this story in books about fandom, but i imagined that at best I might find PDF scans somewhere. FANDOM HISTORY FTW!

Fic Tag Game!
I was tagged by @iamfandomcrazy
Thank you! I was hoping I'd get the chance to answer these!!
How many works do you have on AO3?
24
What's your AO3 word count?
92,829
What fandoms do you write for?
On AO3, Wednesday. I only have Wednesday fics posted on AO3 but elsewhere like Wattpad I have some Harry Potter and Stranger Things. I do want to start posting some Ronance on AO3
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. Condolence (Wyler, 339)
2. Jealousy (Wyler, 274)
3. Freckles (Wyler, 251)
4. Bitter Coffee (Wyler, 227)
5. The Beach & Realization (Wyler, both tied at 219 kudos)
Do you respond to comments?
Yes! I try to respond to all of them albeit sometimes I forget or procrastinate to do so
What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably In The Middle Of The Night or Death's Goodbye. I haven't finished A Pain Worse Than Death yet, but that will have a pretty angsty ending too
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
A Night To Remember, Realization, or Welcome to the Family
Do you get hate on fics?
Nope, not that I know of! Most of the comments I get, if not all, are positive
Do you write smut? What kind?
Yes, I do. I got into it too rather recently (back in summer) as I did a kink bingo writing event. A lot of it is kinky, obviously lol. Beyond that I'm not sure how to explain it cause they each vary/are pretty different from each other. Some are really out there/dirty and others are more tame, just depends on the fic
Do you write cross-overs?
No. I wrote a bit of one in the past for Narnia x Harry Potter, but I never did anything with it and I haven't written any since then. Unless you count Omegaverse, no
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I think so. I remember someone asking me at one point if they could translate one of my fics but I never checked to see if they actually did so I'm not 100% sure
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not really. I've helped other writers with ideas for their fics and they have helped me with ideas for my own but that's the extent of collaboration I've done for writing fics
What WIP would you like to finish but doubt you ever will?
Oh God, where do I start? I'd love to finish A Pain Worse Than Death but low-key don't know if I will. I also would love to finish some other AUs I have in my drafts like my Wyler Circus AU and my Wyler Goody Two shoes/Rebel AU, as well as some Ronance fics I have in my drafts
What's your all-time favorite ship?
Honestly, probably Wyler. But beyond them I also adore Ronance (Robin Buckley and Nancy Wheeler) and Shirbert (Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe)
What are your writing strengths?
Grammar and I like to think I'm decent at descriptions and characterization
What are your writing weaknesses?
Tense! I always subconsciously switch between past and present tense and it drives me insane!! It's something I always have to go back and fix/check for. And maybe dialogue, sometimes I struggle with that. As well as just finishing projects before starting a new one lol, I always have like 500 million drafts all at once that I'm working on
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I think it's fun to do sometimes but I don't do it much and if I do I try to do a language I am partly fluent in (like Spanish) or do a lot of research beforehand to ensure it's as accurate as I can get it
First fandom you wrote for?
Harry Potter I'm pretty sure
Favorite fic you've ever written?
Maybe Coffee Memories (I really like the characterization in this one) or A Pain Worse Than Death (the angst is just so delicious) or Scars Never Leave (I like the sort of hurt/comfort of this fic) or Safe Haven (it's the only Madwheeler fic I have and I like the angst and tone of it but I wrote it several years ago so it needs updated a lot) and then a lot of ideas that are just in my drafts
What fic would you want to rewrite one day?
Condolence because the first half of chapters are very short and lack content and I'd like to fix that, to try and make chapters more similar in length (like at least not like a 400 word chapter then a 3000 word chapter right after each other, yk) and Safe Haven (it's alright but could use some work to be more consistent in its plot and so it would work better, I'd just like to update it with my more recent writing style and knowledge since it's a few years old)
I tag @cosmic-lullaby @katwitchwriting (sorry if either of you have been tagged already!!)

WIP Wednesdays
From Tonight, Tonight, The Highway's Bright:
It was two weeks before Thanksgiving, and they were already putting up Christmas decorations in Elizabeth: paper snowflakes pasted in the store windows, red ribbons and pine garlands wound around the streetlights, twinkle lights twisted around the bare trees. A cold, hollow sensation spread throughout Jonathan’s chest as he glimpsed them through the window of the city bus on the way from school to Dr. Clary’s office.
From Drive All Night:
After a couple of weeks, Nancy still wasn’t sure how she felt about working at a dance palace, but she knew one thing: it beat being an usherette by a mile. Except for Heather, nobody knew she was Nancy Wheeler, a middle-class engineer’s daughter who’d fallen from grace; she was just Anne Marie, a pretty girl who had only good times. There was no pity or scorn, just cold hard cash, and a good sight more than there’d been at the Hawk.
From Tomorrow's a Long Way Off (my as-yet-unposted "Robin and Jonathan become friends in the summer of 1983 " fic):
Robin sighed with relief. If Jonathan was in any danger, it was that her parents might trick him into reading Kahlil Gibran. She walked up to the counter and grabbed a muffin.
From the extremely skimpy From the High to the Low to the End of the Show (my "all the teens are twenty-somethings" AU, which is so formless I don't even know if it'll be Jancy or Stoncy):
One of the benefits of being a twenty-six-year-old divorced mother with a full-time job and your own house was that your parents didn’t have any say in who you dated. Of course, Nancy thought, as she struggled to keep her eyes open in the dim golden light of her parents’ dining room, that didn’t mean that they wouldn’t say anything.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 💗
5. Ritual Children (Fatal Frame 2) Fatal Frame 2 was my first exposure to the series and I absolutely fell in love with it. I loved the mixture of tragedy and horror and all the world-building of this village and its rituals. This fic focused on the Kiryu twins (Akane and Azami) and follows from their birth to death. It's years old now but I'm still proud of my first real dip into the horror/tragedy genre. I debated between this and "Vita e Morte" as number 5, but I like this one a bit more since I got to experiment with horror and really flesh out the tragedy of the story.
4. The View from Here (The Greatest Showman) From the first time I saw The Greatest Showman in theaters, I loved it. It's a very tough call between this and West Side Story on which is my favorite movie musical. The music, the choreography, the story, and the celebration of dreamers really touched me. This fic focused on the relationship between Philip Carlyle and Anne Wheeler, going a little beyond the story in the musical. I put this at #4 because I really enjoyed converting the musical numbers into written dialogue. Plus I got to develop Anne and Philip's relationship beyond what we see in the movie.
3. Inside Eternity (Heroes) Heroes was one of the first fandoms I remember really getting into when the internet became commonly used for such things. I love superhero stories so this one about more ordinary people gaining powers was cool. This fic focused on Peter Petrelli and Gabriel "Sylar" Gray while they were trapped in Sylar's mindscape in season four. Even at the time, I saw that episode as fan-service (Pylar was a VERY popular ship in the fandom) so of course i took advantage. This is a unique one since I didn't really have a plan for where the story was going at first, but as people commented on the chapters I took their suggestions as inspiration. It was a really fun collaboration between me and my readers.
2. Someone (Mass Effect) I was a little late to learning about Mass Effect, only playing it once all three games were out. Now it's one of my favorite video game series. Who doesn't love a space adventure story that takes inspiration from so many other space adventures? This fic is focused on Kaidan Alenko and John Shepard (Paragade Earthborn War Hero) as their relationship develops over the trilogy. I'm ranking this so high because it's my go-to romance whenever I play. Kaidan is my favorite character and I love his relationship with Shepard. I also like it because I got to write a slow-burn that really developed their friends-to-lovers dynamic
Living with Ghosts (House of Ashes) Like most people, I got into the DPA because I enjoyed Until Dawn and wanted to see more from the developers. Little Hope is my favorite but House of Ashes captured my imagination with its well-written characters. This fic follows the aftermath of Jason being infected by the dead alien he inhales. This is my #1 because without even meaning to, I put a lot of myself and my own processing into it. It has personal, special meaning to me because of that.
So those are my top 5 favorite fics I've written. Sorry I don't know who to pass this on to, but if you are a content creator (writer, artist, etc) feel free to list your top five favorite pieces anyway. We are our own worst critics so it's important for us to acknowledge the things we're proud of.

Thanks all for sharing your joys and recommendations! I'm collating the list (so far) here for myself/y'all:
Books that were recommended that I already read & loved & recommend myself :)
The Witch King by Martha Wells - after a betrayal, a tired demon helps his angry lesbian witch best friend go on a quest to rescue the witch's stoic paladin wife
Gideon the Ninth / the Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir - engaging puzzlebox story set in a spacefaring necromantic cult, multilayered & twisty worldbuilding, intense moral complexity

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison - A young man unexpectedly becomes emperor and befuddles the court with his kindness
The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud (though I hear there's a fourth book now!) - GREAT! Engaging, and I wouldn't describe it as "feel good." Sort of like Howl's Moving Castle if it was told from Calcifer's POV and also Howl was an adolescent British wizard who was trying to grow up to be evil in a British empire running on wizardry

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Discworld by Terry Pratchett
The Queen’s Thief by Megan Whalen Turner - stunning, engaging, delightful, twisty, read these sixteen million times and find some new double meaning every time. A young thief brags he can steal anything; and he's right.

hey friends I’m looking for some reading recommendations!
I’ve just been rereading old favorites, which is a joy, but I’m hankering for something new to surprise me and capture me. I’m open to anything but have particular soft spots for:
- narrators or POV characters with distinctive, atypical voices, perspectives, or assumptions who make an ordinary or extraordinary world more interesting by being seen through their lens (ex. Martha Wells’ Murderbot, owlet’s This, You Protect)
- clever, precise plotting and storytelling such that final conclusions or reveals click together like delightful, unexpected but perfectly predictable clockwork— the sort that you can see obviously in the first chapter but only after you’ve read the last page; stories where the authors trust the reader to pay attention and figure stuff out (ex. Megan Whalen Turner’s The Queen’s Thief series, The Westing Game, Pamela Dean’s The Secret Country)
- worldbuilding with depth and texture — it feels explorable, immersive, like you could study it, like you could get lost, like other stories are going on just off the page (The Secret Countey gets a second honorary mention here, great book, I highly recommend)
- characters you can root for, especially ones that are slowly, quietly, unregretfully tearing themselves apart for something they care about (Kip Mdang from Hands of the Emperor, Newt from Designations Congruent with Things, Nico D’Angelo from the Percy Jackson books, Arthur in rageprufrock’s Presque Vu)
I like stories with momentum, stories that swallow you. I like beautiful things. I like stories that surprise me and make me think. Help a gal out? What stories have captured you?

The Chaser I Seek
Summary: Muggle-born Anne Wheeler is thrilled when she receives her Head Girl badge in the mail the summer before her final year at Hogwarts, and so is Pureblooded Phillip Carlyle when he discovers he is to be Head Boy. Neither Phillip or Anne knows much about the other, except for what they have learned from afar. Phillip has been watching from the Slytherin side of the stands for years as Anne leads the Ravenclaw Quidditch Team to victory after victory. Anne, on the other hand, has listened to the whispers about the Carlyle family and their obsession with Pureblood lineage, and she knows along with the rest of the school that the Carlyles are instrumental in Voldemort's slowly gaining success.
Neither is prepared to be jarringly thrown together their very first day by a food-fight blown out of proportion.
As both students struggle to balance new responsibilities, they will begin to see new sides to one another-- sides that Phillip has been taught never to look for, and sides that Anne is not ready to explore. But with the wizarding world taking new steps every day towards war, Hogwarts must cling to unity stronger than ever... Especially the two students who are the face of it all.

Chapter One: The Battlefield
Anne had been hoping for a memorable first day as Head Girl, but now she was wondering if she should have been a tad more specific.
Things had started out fine. Perfect, even, which is probably why the universe decided to deal Anne the disastrous scenario that followed. On the train, she had arrived early enough to meet all of the prefects, and so she had begun to divide the job of monitoring the various cars among everyone. By the time everybody was there, there was a set plan on how they were going to approach it, and it was being carried out perfectly. Phillip Carlyle, the Head Boy, had arrived about ten minutes into the planning. This had been slightly concerning for Anne, who had only communicated with her partner in stiff, unsure letters of congratulations over the summer. Neither seemed able to find the right words all summer. She supposed it was natural, seeing as they had never interacted before. The two of them had classes together, yes, being two of the brightest students in the school. But with advanced classes focused heavily on independent study and neither knew the other well enough to pair up for the few projects they were assigned.
That was the least of her worries, though she tried not to think about it. The Carlyle family had a reputation, and it was not one that painted a hopeful picture of Phillip's respect for a Muggle-born. The past few years had seen a palpable increase in the tension between Muggle-borns and Pureblooded wizards as You-Know-Who grew more and more powerful. Not all Purebloods held the supremacist attitude towards Muggles, of course. But the Carlyles were one of the most notorious families for this attitude and had been for generations, and Phillip Carlyle was the only heir to this legacy of hatred in a time when such superiority was thriving. The thought of what might happen while they were forced to work side-by-side had caused her more sleepless nights than she cared to admit.
However, Phillip's arrival on the train had brought no ominous thunder or sudden chill, so that had been a plus.
Really, Phillip was nothing but supportive of the orders Anne had given. He assumed the role of enforcing her plans rather than trying to make his own, which Anne discovered when she heard him instructing some of the new Fifth Year Prefects.
"She's the one running the show right now," he had informed them, and there was no malice or sarcasm in his voice as he said it. "That's good for you, because she's going to give you a little part of the plan to work with. If you do your job well, then everyone else will be able to do theirs, and we'll be able to get this train to the station without burning it down."
The two Fifth Year girls he had been speaking to had burst into giggles at that, but Anne had found herself feeling just the slightest bit flattered. She had considered going over to greet him, maybe thank him in a professional manner, but it was at that moment that a Third Year boy burst into the compartment, saying, "Umm... So, we were just sitting there, right, and then the seat started smoking, and we don't know how it happened, but there's a small hole burned in-"
"How small is 'small?'"
"I dunno, I mean, most of the seat is gone, but-"
Neither had spoken to the other after that, for as the Prefects began to do their jobs, various situations arose that demanded each of their separate attentions. This was a development that Anne did not mind, and she was happy to keep busy on the ride to the castle. By the time that the Hogwarts Express had pulled into Hogsmeade Station, Anne had successfully handled a game of Exploding Snap gone wrong, a misfired charm that caused the snack trolley to overturn, and a mess made of a pair of robes during a game of Gobstones. As she watched the students leave the Express, Anne was aware of the fact that her face was flushed and her curls were escaping her buns in wisps. But she also felt proud, like she was beginning to live up to the shiny badge pinned to the front of her worn Ravenclaw robes that were a few inches too short.
It did irk her slightly that Phillip Carlyle looked as unruffled as ever from where he stood across from her, making sure that all of the students made their way out.
After that, things were a blur. Anne and the Carlyle boy were tasked with making sure that students knew where to assume their seats since Professor Lutz was unable to do so while she was tending to the First Years. After the majority of the students were seated, Anne made her way to the Head Table to ask any of the professors what they should be doing next.
"Excuse me," she called to the nearest teacher, the blonde Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor. Professor Barnum glanced over at Anne with a kind eyebrow raised. "Is there anything else that we can do, Professor?" Anne queried, hopeful. She needed something to busy herself with, or else she was fairly sure her energy would fall flat.
Professor Barnum hummed softly, appearing to think. "Erm... I don't think so, no," she replied, smiling apologetically as she tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. "But I am sure that Phineas said something about the Sorting starting soon. You two have done more than enough for now, I think, so you can go enjoy the festivities with the rest of us."
Anne nodded, offering the professor a polite smile that hid her disappointment. "Thank you, Ma'am," she murmured, inclining her head respectfully. She was fairly sure that she felt Professor Barnum's motherly gaze upon her back as she weaved between students on the way back to the Ravenclaw side of the Great Hall.
As Anne left the table, she saw that Carlyle had already taken this advice. He was seated in the middle of a group of affluent Slytherin students, and he was laughing at something the brunette girl across from him had said. It did not set in until that moment that Anne did not have anyone to sit with now that W.D. had graduated.
Her brother was working in the Three Broomsticks in order to support them, and Anne knew about the second job that he was hiding. She had noticed the owls coming at odd hours of the night to their tiny flat in Hogsmeade, and she had even managed to sneak one out of the trash, from which she deduced that he was doing some translation of Runes for scholars in Albania. Anne's heart ached that her brother, a brilliant Runes translator who could have found a prestigious job anywhere in the world, was slaving away at a pub for her sake every day. When she graduated, Anne was determined to pick up and leave to start a new life with W.D. They would go somewhere, anywhere, and Anne would get a job researching advanced potions until she was accepted by some major Quidditch team. But until then, Anne no longer had anyone to sit with.
She took a spot at the very end of the Ravenclaw table where no one else sat, fiddling with the napkin on the table absently. She could feel eyes on her, now that she was Head Girl... And she knew those eyes came along with whispers. They did not linger too long, as people had better things to talk about, but she still looked down at the hem of her threadbare sleeve to avoid seeing the brief glances. Anne had never been particularly popular. People knew she was brilliant, they knew that she was one of the best Chasers that Hogwarts had seen for decades, maybe even a century. But for as many acquaintances as Anne had, her dedication to her schoolwork and Quidditch performance did not leave much room for any real friends.
A few moments later, an ample distraction came to turn any unwanted attention away from Anne. Headmaster Barnum rose, and with a wave of his wand, he magicked away the tables. The Headmaster's skinny, slightly mousy appearance was deceiving, for this man was a master of the classes of illusion and enchantment. He was renowned for it in many circles, and Anne was fascinated by the slight flair for the dramatic the man had. She had always been attentive to his words, respecting the air of mystery that clung to him like cobwebs.
The Sorting commenced thereafter. It was a short one, with a particularly small incoming Year. However, there was a noticeable disturbance throughout the ceremony. Anne noticed almost immediately that whenever a surname that was well-known and respected in the magical community was announced, it was greeted with full applause. There were several surnames, however, that were known to be traditionally common in Muggle communities. The cheering following these names was weakened as if at least a third of the students had dropped out. Anne's eyes narrowed, and as soon as any student with a name such as her own was announced, she could be observed to be cheering twice as loud as normal. Several of the teachers picked up on the incident as well, and Anne was fairly sure she caught a glimpse of Professor Barnum and her husband murmuring sonorous charms so that the cheering of the teachers was magnified.
By the time that Zabel, Francine had been sorted into Hufflepuff, Headmaster Barnum had summoned the tables again out of thin air. Gasps filled the room from the First year students who had not been there to see it the first time, and Anne felt a little smile play with her lips. The Headmaster gave a quick speech, and then with a flourish of his wand, the platters before the students all became filled with enough food to feed a small army. Chatter rose to mingle with the cozy sounds of clattering forks and knives, and Anne felt herself visibly relax. Maybe she wasn't exactly a part of it, but this was the part of Hogwarts that she loved. Moments like these, where so many students just existed together, made it feel like home.
Of course, the day chose that moment to turn for the worse.
Anne had only just begun to pour a goblet of pumpkin juice when she first noticed the disturbance, coming from one end of the Slytherin table. Three boys, Fourth Year students, Anne guessed, were using their wands to send little chunks of candied carrots flying to hit a pair of Muggle-born twins across the aisle. Anne set down her goblet, preparing to rise to call the students out. Before she had managed to extricate herself from the table, however, one of the twins had turned and fixed the Fourth Years with a smirk. Anne hastened her efforts to reach the students, but it was much too late. An entire bowl of steak and kidney pudding flew across the aisle to splatter the three students and anyone in the immediate vicinity. For a moment, all conversation fell silent, and there was a moment of hollow space.
And then, the shouting began.
Wands flew out, and Anne fumbled to keep her own in her hand as she desperately scanned the room, trying to see where she was most needed. Anne's ears were overloaded with a tangle of layering spells, most of which sent various trays and plates of food zooming through the air. At first, Anne struggled to appeal to the casters of the spells, but there were far too many. She cursed under her breath as she began to nonverbally cast as many shield charms as she physically could. Invisible barriers sprung up between the attackers and their intended victims, and they effectively stopped the food from flying any further. Unfortunately, this mostly resulted in whatever was being thrown being propelled back towards the attacker, spreading still more food everywhere.
A plate of treacle tart whizzed past Anne's head, and she narrowly dodged it only to be met with a full tureen of chowder. The soup drenched her and a pair of First Years from head to toe, and a shocked gasp left the lips of the children behind her. Anne winced and quickly darted back, gripping them by the hands and pulling them under the table. "Stay here until it's over," she instructed the shell-shocked girls before sliding out from underneath again, leaving them gaping at her retreating form.
Anne fought to move forward, doing as much damage control as she possibly could. Dodging food became completely impossible at this point. What might have been an entire ham narrowly missed Anne's head, shoving her hair out of her bun and getting the soaked curls everywhere. Several pastries were hurled at Anne and smashed into her shoulder, her arm, and her chest, smearing all down the front of her robes. A bowl of lukewarm porridge dumped over her head, and the Head Girl fought to wipe it out of her eyes as she forged forward. All she could do, at the moment, was vanish whatever flying food she could hit. Luckily, Anne had fairly decent aim, and she managed to completely remove several large platters of turkey, ham, and chicken from the air before they could actually hurt someone. Through all of the fighting, she could barely tell who was who, until she stumbled into a form slightly taller than her. Anne whirled around with her wand out, ready to stun the perpetrator if need be.
Instead, she found herself coming face-to-face with a thoroughly flustered Phillip Carlyle.
He looked absolutely ridiculous, with what must have been half of a pudding plastered to his hair and the side of his face. What Anne guessed was chocolate syrup dripped down the side of his face, and what had been his pristine, brand-new robes were covered with mashed potatoes and pumpkin juice. There was a determination in his eyes that was rather comical, seeing as his normally perfect hair was in a cowlick that looked like something from a cartoon. However, as he raised her wand at her, she did not find it hard to believe that he might stun her.
"Carlyle!" she called, over all the noise. "Stop, it's Anne Wheeler!" He froze for a moment, blinking, and Anne remembered that she probably looked equally ridiculous. But then, relief spread over his food-covered features.
"Thank Merlin," he exclaimed, gripping her by the arm and yanking her to the side to avoid a flying sponge cake. "Are you the one who's been vanishing things?"
"Yes," she called, tugging her arm free from his grip immediately. She did not have time to be flustered by the sudden, unwanted contact. "This needs to stop, now, before it gets out of hand!"
"I think it's a bit late for that, as I think I just saw Headmaster Barnum quite literally pie Professor Barnum in the face."
"Are you certain-"
"I would testify to it before Wizengamot."
Anne gritted her teeth and glared at nothing in particular. "Maybe if we can get to Professor Lutz, then-"
Behind them, there was a massive boom, and Anne cried out. Carylye was touching her again, pulling her to the ground with him. She landed sprawled rather uncomfortably on his solid chest, and quickly Anne moved to haul herself off of him. As if that was not enough, a bowl of tuna salad shot by them, effectively covering the both of them in creamy goop.
"Sorry, sorry," Carlyle panted, looking up at her with blue eyes that were as wide as the saucer that broke against the wall behind them.
"What was-"
Just then, a rancid smell filled the hall, and Anne clapped a hand over her mouth and nose. Carlyle did the same, not before Anne caught a glimpse of a gag.
"Dugbob," Carlyle's muffled voice reached her ears as the disgusted coughing of many students filled the hall. Anne felt her level of frustration skyrocket.
"Dungbombs?" she spat. "For the love of all things holy, who the-"
Another boom, and this time Anne was ready. She ducked her head under the nearest table, but Carlyle was not quick enough. Mud flew through the air, hitting him square in the face. Immediately, the Head Boy turned and began to cough, attempting to get out whatever he could from his mouth. Anne stood, trying to locate where the Dungbombs were being set off. The smell was crippling, but she kept a hand clapped over her mouth as she struggled to make her way forward, leaving Carlyle behind. Another detonated, and Anne felt the mud splatter her, too. But she managed to keep it out of her eyes, and that was all that she needed. She pushed her way forward, and through the cloud of brown smoke, she spotted the Fifth Year who was detonating them crouching over another one.
"Evanesco!" Anne shouted, taking aim at the bomb. The boom still set off, but only a little bit more filth flew through the air like projectiles. The rest vanished, along with the bomb, and Anne aimed a silent 'Petrificus totalus!' at the single figure she could see in the center of all of the smoke. She heard a crack that meant that the charm had met the intended target, and then, in the haze of the smoke and the break in the fight, Carlyle climbed onto the Slytherin table, almost slipping in the spill of soup on top of it. Anne pointed her wand at him, murmuring a breathless "Sonorous."
And then, above everything, Carlyle's voice boomed, "The next student to use food as a projectile will personally volunteer to work in the kitchens for two weeks, after they clean all of this up!"
The hall was silent, and Anne let out a soft groan as she leaned against the table at his feet. No noise could be heard except for the labored breath of the students and the dripping of food off of robes. Carlyle let out a massive breath of relief as Anne rubbed her temples and stared at the growing pile of porridge and tuna fish chunks at her feet.
Anne was fairly certain she would not be forgetting her first day as Head Girl anytime soon.

The tent – the big top, as they had taken to calling it – was never empty. From the moment it was constructed, there was always at least one person in there training and practicing. Usually multiple people, until it turned into a chaotic cacophony of curses and laughter and barked instructions as everyone hurried to get the show together in time for their grand debut at their new location; their new home.
However, late as it was, the big top was now silent. The troupe and stagehands gone for the day, resting before their first show tomorrow night. Although it still wasn’t empty. Anne, unable to sleep, had found her way there after weaving through the caravans and outbuildings that housed everyone. She was not at all surprised to find Phillip already there, checking over equipment out of habit. Maybe that was why she had ended up there, she had known she would find him.
“Shouldn’t you be sleeping?” he asked, once he noticed her approaching.
“I could ask the same of you.”
“I’m not the star of the show.” He held out a hand to her. Anne took it carefully, lifting her skirts gently as she stepped over the lip of the ring.
“Funny, neither am I.” She straightened out her skirts with one hand, since Phillip had yet to relinquish the other. “Do you think P.T. is nervously pacing his house right now?”
“No,” Phillip laughed. “He’s probably sleeping like a baby.” He eyed her askance. “Is that why you’re up? Nervously pacing?”
“No, mostly I’m excited.” She couldn’t keep her gaze from drifting upward to the platform overhead. “I think it’s going to be a good show.”
“I know it’s going to be a good show.” He raised their linked hands and pressed a lingering kiss to the back of her knuckles. In polite company, such a kiss would have been the highest form of decorum. Although to Anne it hardly felt like that, it seemed far too intimate, and she pressed her lips together to keep from grinning outright.
“Careful, Mister Carlyle, you sound like a fan.”
“Of you, Miss Wheeler? Always.” He turned over her hand gently, and laid a kiss against the inside of her wrist. She had to suppress a shiver down her spine.
“It almost sounds like you’re playing favorites among the troupe.” Her voice sounded a little breathy even to her own ears. “Isn’t that against the rules?”
Phillip laughed softly, his breath hot against her skin. Another shiver ran down her back.
“I am playing favorites. I may even ask you for an autograph soon.” He was still laughing when he kissed the inside of her forearm, just below the edge of her sleeve.
Anne held her breath as he kissed the bend in her elbow, then he shoulder, covered by her blouse, before he brushed back her hair and kissed the side of her neck. Her breath left her in a shaky sigh.
“If you ask nicely, I might oblige you with an autograph.” Anne turned her head toward his face, and wet her lips. She slowly lifted her gaze to his and let a quiet moment pass between them, as they stood close together, her hand still clutched in Phillip’s. Anne was the first to move, leaning into Phillip. He mirrored her movement and their lips met in the middle.
It was a long, slow kiss. And Anne shuffled herself closer still to Phillip, laying her free hand on his chest, fingers gripping at his shirt slightly. His free hand came up to cup her cheek as he slanted his lips over hers.
“Have I convinced you yet?” he asked against her mouth, thumb gently brushing against her cheek.
“Close. I think I need a few more niceties, though.”
“You drive a hard bargain.”
“All’s fair in love and negations.” They both laughed.
They were still laughing as Phillip finally let go of her hand, and wrapped his arm around her waist. Anne looped her arms around his neck, and kissed him again.
The sun was just cresting on the horizon when she finally made her way back to her caravan – knees a little weak, and lips swollen – she would likely be late for rehearsal later, but it was entirely worth it. Phillip always was.
