Does anyone else find watching the 2004 movie easier when watching in another language? I actually do like Gerard Butler as an actor, but his singing is difficult to endure. Emmy Rossum's thin voice is also hard to deal too. Watching it in Italian, Spanish, French or German dubs ends up being far more enjoyable.

I've definitely heard people say that, or otherwise agree that the singers on just about all the dubs are more pleasant to listen to.

For myself, though... I like listening to my albums of those dubs, but I don't like watching them myself. I think one reason is that I just don't like dubs in general - sorry, I'm a subs person! I just like hearing the actors' actual voices rather than a dub, whatever language it's in. But another thing is that I can also feel the singers in the dubs forcing themselves to sound more like Gerard Butler or Emmy Rossum (especially Renata Fusco in the Italian dub, she sounds like she could have sung so much more powerfully), so I actually don't enjoy listening to them much. And of course they have to sing everything as it is in the movie, so I'll hear them do Rossum's 'Think of Me' cadenza, or cut out the "In all your fantasies" line, and just sort of... sigh.

This is especially true of the Spanish dub, because Juan Carlos Barona (the Phantom) and Julia Moller (Christine) were in the Madrid production before doing the dub and they sound so much better in the actual stage production (I think they actually gave an interview where they said the lyrics were translated differently from the stage production's to be more "pop" and that they were told to sing more "sexily"), so every time I try to listen to the 2004 Spanish dub, I just end up thinking, "Why am I listening to this when I could be hearing them in the stage show?" So yeah, heh.

Probably the only ones I do listen to somewhat regularly are the French and Italian dubs, since there hasn't been a French or Italian production yet. And even in French, there are now recordings of Manon Taris, Anne-Marine Suire, Bastien Jacqueport, and others singing several of the songs, so... not much interest in that anymore either.

Christine will be played by Anne-Marine Suire, who was supposed to the alternate Christine in Paris

This appears to be the first professional role for Guillaume Beaudoin, playing Raoul, as he just graduated from university last year

The Paris bodices and all the different skirts!

ROW 1: Sierra Boggess and Anne-Marine Suire in Paris. I'm not sure what level of finished or still in making Sierra's costume is in, I always thought the star studded layer would be an underlayer when I first saw Anne-Marine's fitting photo. But with Sierra I wonder if it's actually completed? If so, it's one of the most special versions I've seen, with the giant moon tiara, the solid bodice and the silvery star-patterned skirt.

ROW 2: Clara Verdier in the World Tour. Here the bodice was paired with an elder Aussie/World Tour skirt, stil star studded but with much smaller stars in the fabric and more pinkish hue. Rows of silver stars decorated the top layer. The tiara appears to be a very old UK style, with a thick silver moon.

ROW 3: Megan Ort, u/s in the World Tour, wearing the same style as Clara Verdier, except Megan's skirt was an even older Aussie skirt with silvery floral pattern.

ROW 4: Caitlin Finnie in the World Tour. She wore the same type of bodice and tiara as Clara Verdier and Megan Ort, but she wore a third type of skirt: a darker, more orange-y skirt in a West End-ish style but without a shimmering underlayer. The skirt has an ombre effect, but only towards the lower part of the hem.

ROW 5: Li Zemei and Cai Min in the current Chinese tour. Here the bodices have been paired with a fifth type of skirt; similar to Caitlin Finnie it's a West End style, but here with a more distinct ombre effect, and also with a shimmering underlayer. The tiara is the elder UK style with the two-tiered fundament with stars.

(Of all these I feel that the bodice was first properly matched in China... but only Clara Verdier's costume was ever properly photographed on stage, so it might be an unfair comparison. Although I feel like you've seen every Phantom, Christine, and Raoul, can I just ask if there are actors and actresses you haven't seen a bootleg of but want to?

Oh, so many, there are lots of cast members who weren't recorded, or fully recorded, and who I would love to see or hear. A short list (and I do mean this is short, because I basically eliminated anybody who had a full bootleg of them, whether audio or video, solely for the sake of my sanity):

Hi Marlene! Do you happen to have audios of Anne-Marine Suire? There were some videos of her singing WYWSHA and Think of Me but they are now private unfortunately. I was hoping someone might have saved them, or someone might have taken audios of the French-Canadian concert. Her Point of No Return with Hugo Laporte is to die for, I really wish to hear more!

I don't, unfortunately. There are 3 videos on this YouTube channel that I believe came from a press call for said concert, but I haven't seen anything fuller. Shame, as that concert is the closest we will come to a French production for a while.

are there any recordings of Phantom in French at all? I know they have a few songs from when the production was being developed in France, but are there any full-length recordings, possibly from the dubbed move or something?

Right now, the only released recordings of the ALW musical in French are from the 2004 movie's French dub, of which there are two versions - one from Montreal and one from France. (There's a number of proposed reasons for why there's two, including that French audiences found the Montreal translation poor or that the Montreal translation just didn't sync well.) Both have been gifted already here, and both are fairly complete.

Of course, since the dubs are from the 2004 film, there's some cut lines and songs missing from there compared to the musical, not to mention the Paris production was using a completely different libretto. That Paris libretto has been performed twice now, in a concert version in Montreal and Quebec in 2018 and 2020, which featured Anne-Marine Suire, who was cast as the alternate Christine in Paris, performing as Christine, but I have yet to see any recording released of that.

Is there any audio of the Canada Phantom concert? The trailer said it is in French ("en francais", if I didn't misunderstand). I'd love to listen to Phantom songs sung in French.

I haven’t seen one, but who knows? Something might pop up. And yes, it is in French, using the translation written for the canceled Paris production.

It’s worth pointing out, though, that this isn’t the first time the Paris libretto has been staged as a concert in Canada. One was done back in 2018, and with a pretty similar cast; there’s even a review of it here with some photos. Someone on Tumblr actually saw it and wrote a review of it as well, which you can read here; she also claimed to have gotten an audio of it, but I’m not sure she ever released it and at this point I’m too afraid to ask.

And if you want to hear at least some Phantom songs in French using the Paris libretto, here’s Manon Taris and Bastien Jacquemart (who would have been the understudy Christine and principal Raoul, respectively, in the Paris production) singing ‘Think of Me’, ‘All I Ask of You’, and ‘Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again’, and Anne-Marine Suire (who would have been alternate Christine in Paris and was in both of the French concerts) singing ‘WIshing’ as well.
